July 2010 Page 2 ECC STAFF and BOARD OF GOVERNORS EMAIL YOUR ECC STAFF & PROS Club News PREMIER GOLF COURSE PREMIER DINING PREMIER FITNESS PREMIER TENNIS & POOL EDGEWOOD EXPERIENCE A publication for ECC Members Edgewood Country Club 1600 Edgewood Drive Charleston, WV 25302 “Return Service Requested” LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Thank you very much for the warm welcome I have received here at Edgewood Country Club. Just to update you on my family and the events that have led to my return to West Virginia… I have been married for 27 years to Carey Johnson Fleming and we have two sons, David III, who is a fire fighter in Charleston, South Carolina, and Ian, who has just graduated from South Kent School in Connecticut and will attend Clemson University this fall. In 1987 I was hired by Kemper Sports Management as the General Manager of Kemper Lakes Golf and Tennis Club located in suburban Chicago. While there we hosted the 1989 PGA Championship won by Payne Stewart, held four Grand Slams of Golf and I also worked as a golf operations consultant for Princeville Resort located on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii. I then served as Vice President of the company’s Resort Golf Properties division and developed and instituted a Resort Marketing plan on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. After seven years there I was hired by American Golf Corporation as the Regional Operating Executive responsible for the operation of 24 golf properties located in Texas and Oklahoma. My last position prior to coming back to West Virginia was working in Westchester County New York as the General Manager of Hollow Brook Golf Club and I worked as a golf operations consultant for The Myrtle Beach National Golf Group that owns and operates 15 properties in Myrtle Beach, SC. Each time you come to the club it is my hope and desire that you receive a warm welcome, are greeted by pleasant staff members displaying an outstanding attitude and that you receive the finest food and beverages served in a friendly and professional manner. My position has many challenges and I am committed to maintaining and hiring enthusiastic, motivated, positive associates. We will train, re-train and mentor our staff to the highest standards and will recognize and reward excellent employee performance. I will continually challenge the staff to be professional, positive, confident and knowledgeable in their positions here and I will attempt to develop better lines of communication with the membership, the Board of Governors and the staff. My door is always open and I am available to speak with you at any time about your thoughts, ideas and any concerns you may have about the management and operation of your Club. In the position of General Manager my main concern is with your enjoyment of the Club every time you visit 1600 Edgewood Drive or the golf course on Derricks Creek Road. I wish you a great summer season here at Edgewood Country Club and again, thank you for the warm welcome. Sincerely, David B. To loose weight, you definitely need to eat and live differently from the way you once did. Friends and family will be your biggest challenge. They might “accidentally” sabotage your success by suggesting seconds at Sunday family dinner or trying to get you in on the 25 cent wing special at the bar down the street. YOUR MOVE: don’t be swayed, even by those you love. If someone is really getting on you and making things harder, you may need to reevaluate their place in your life. Take a walk through the Capital Street Market and appreciate the labors of our local farmers. Over the past seventeen years I’ve come to know them and count on their products and advice. The rewards have been tremendous. I’ve been able to create countless dishes with flavors indigenous to the area. The following Gazpacho recipe is extremely simple to prepare and it allows you to take advantage of the market and its many flavors. I’ve added crab and avocado to the basic recipe for a little twist. Gazpacho yields aprox. 8-10 servings 1 1 1 1 1 1 1\2 1 1\2 1\4 1\4 1 1\4 1 3 2 ½ To taste cup Red Onions, chopped cup Green Bell Pepper, chopped cup English Cucumber, chopped cup Celery, chopped cup Ripe Tomatoes, peeled and chopped tsp. Garlic, chopped tsp. Kosher salt cup Texas Pete’s or Franks Hot Sauce cup Tomato Paste Tbl. White or Rice Vinegar cup Olive Oil, extra virgin preferably Tbl. Lemon juice cups Tomato juice Tbl. Worcestershire Sauce cup Cilantro, fresh, chopped coarsely Salt and Pepper For best results, combine all ingredients in a bowl and let marinate overnight. Blend the ingredients into a smooth or chunky puree and season to taste. Page 11 FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT Fellow Members, Page 12 July 2010 I am very pleased with the way things are coming along at Edgewood. Much of this has to do with the presence of our new manager, Dave Fleming, who is here full time and doing an excellent job. I encourage you when you are at the Club to introduce yourself to him, although he will go out of his way to meet you. Sun In addition, Kristyn Anderson will return to the Club, returning to a job she held through 2008, replacing Roseshalla Holmes as Membership Coordinator. While we are sorry to see Roseshalla leave, we are very fortunate to have Kristyn return allowing us to move forward on membership recruitment without skipping a beat in performance. Mon Tue Wed 1 April and May were great months for the Club, including influxes of new members. We are encouraged by the response to our new membership categories and will continue to seek to grow our membership. Water Aerobics Mixed Doubles We had a number of banquets, golf outings and other activities at the Club during the month of May which were well attended and well received. The member guest golf outing was a success as was the wine tasting dinner, to name a few. Much of this has to do with the quality of our staff who pretty much ran things in the absence of a general manager. The Board is aggressively looking at making a major renovation to the Grill Room at 1600 Edgewood Drive. Our thought is to convert this room to a more casual dining room with large screen televisions, a bar and a more casual dining menu. We would like to use this room as an alternative to the members lounge and formal dining area, reaching out to our members for a more casual, relaxed experience. This room will be a place to watch a ballgame, have a beer, have a light meal, and enjoy the company of fellow members. In the near future, I will be bringing to you more information about this proposed renovation as things progress. It presently is the Board’s hope if all things go well to begin construction in July and have the new room ready for September. I want to encourage you all to take advantage of the Club in the upcoming months. The pool and tennis courts are open, the golf course is in pristine condition, and the food selection and service at Edgewood remains excellent, the best dining experience in the Valley. Kristyn worked in this position in 2007 and 2008 and is returning after the departure of Roseshalla Holmes who served in this capacity for the past year here at Edgewood. Kristyn brings a great deal of experience and background in developing effective marketing plans, membership recruiting and retention, personal communication, community networking and has valuable experience working with committees, boards and the membership with respect to achieving goals relating to member satisfaction and exceeding member expectations. Kristyn’s husband Troy is the Club’s Golf Course Superintendent and they have a three year old son, Colin.
