Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary – June 4 and June 5, 2016
Pastor’s Corner
My Dear Friends,
This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate
the 10th Sunday in Ordinary Time. We hear
about Jesus raising a boy from the dead on this
day in the Gospel of Luke (7: 11-17).
This Wednesday, we will celebrate our St. Mary School Baccalaureate
Mass at 8:30 a.m. In the evening, we will celebrate the graduation
ceremony of our 8th graders. We thank the graduates and their families
for choosing our school, and we wish our graduates the very best life
has to offer. I remind the graduates that part of graduating from our
School means that the faculty and staff will always be here for you
should you need us.
On Thursday, St. Mary School will dismiss for the summer. On Friday
of this week (June 10th), we will go back to having our Friday morning
Masses at 7:30 a.m. until the new school year starts once again.
Recently, the Diocese of Raleigh announced new priest assignments. In
the Cape Fear Deanery, Fr. Marco González will be leaving Whiteville
and Elizabethtown to become Pastor of St. Elizabeth Parish in
Farmville, N.C. Fr. Joe Yaeger will leave Farmville to become Pastor
of Sacred Heart Parish in Whiteville and its Mission of Our Lady of the
Snows in Elizabethtown. Best wishes to both men.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
- Father Bob

Renaissance to the 21st century, with a special emphasis on Gregorian
chant. Singers who are high school age and older are welcome. For

CDA, Wilmington Court #1036, Ends the Year with a High Tea
2015-16 was a busy year for Catholic Daughters of the Americas
(CDA), Court #1036. We sent gift bags to hospitalized veterans in
Fayetteville on two holidays, provided refreshments for the annual
Tileston Quarter Auction, and sponsored one of the Lenten Friday
"soup and stations." We ended our year of ongoing spiritual support
for St. Mary School eighth graders by hosting the annual Liz
Militscher Angel Luncheon. Our fundraiser netted $700 for Victory
Junction, a camp located in NC for children with chronic medical
conditions or serious illness. In addition, we completed smaller
monthly projects in support of the community. We thank the parishioners of St. Mary for their continuing generous support.
CDA members will celebrate our successful year with a high tea on
Sunday, June 12, at the home of one of our members. All women of
the parish are cordially invited to attend. Please call JoAnne, 910-4526351, or Stephanie, 910-769-3185, for information and directions,
preferably before June 10.

Around the Area
Carolina Catholic talks to Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie
For our first show in June, we speak with Dr. Grazie Pozo Christie, a
medical doctor, mother of five, and a policy advisor for The Catholic
Association. She writes and speaks in both Spanish and English about
Catholicism, religious freedom, and the intersection of faith and science. As a Hispanic, she brings a special focus on social issues that
affect the growing Latino population, such as the state of the family
and the real needs of the poor and marginalized. As a physician, she is
able to address complex subjects relating to government health policy
and its true impact on the people it purports to help. We focus in this
show on her May 9, 2016 opinion piece in the New York Post entitled,
“The ACLU’s deadly anti-Catholic vendetta," which challenges this
report from the ACLU: Health Care Denied.
This show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM,
93.1FM, and 103.1 FM Saturday, June 4th and 11th, at 11 a.m. and
Sunday, June 5th and 12th, at 6 p.m. oon This show can also be heard
on our website at wilmingtoncatholicradio.com. Thank you.

You have often heard the explanation of “ordinary time”. If anything –
it is not so ordinary – these 34+ Sundays during the Liturgical year
because the Liturgy continues t unravel for us the great mystery of
God’s love for humanity. (Ordinary only refers to “numbers – ordinals
– which are counting the weeks before we begin another Liturgical Year
with the Holy Season of Advent.)
There is certainly nothing ordinary about Elijah healing the son of the
widow of Zarephath or Paul being converted to become a disciple of
Jesus or Jesus breathing life back into a young man. We definitely have
a God who cares for us and whose Spirit breathes within us.
During this past week many people were assisted at the Outreach, thanks
to the outpouring of so many parishioners and non parishioners who
share time, talent and treasure with us. One elderly woman we were
serving remarked to me that when she stared out this morning she wasn’t
too happy, but once served she “can’t stop smiling and every day is a
blessed day but I didn’t think it would be this blessed!” We were able to
pay some rent for her as she had used her rent money to fix her
refrigerator. She also needed a small air-conditioner and we had one,
which was a miracle in itself, and so she truly was blessed.
This is what serving God by serving others is all about. One act of
kindness just multiplies. Our young first and second graders Art Sale
netted $400 and a neighbor was so impressed , she matched it! The
children were ecstatic and so will several families be when they are
assisted in their crisis.
Special Need for the Week:
We are looking into purchasing nutritious drinks, such as boost and
ensure for those who are fragile and in need of this type of supplement. A bottle or two will help us launch this new venture.
Any household items are appreciated.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our
Spring Concert evenings. Our talented teachers and students enjoyed sharing with you
what they have learned during the last two
quarters. We hope that you enjoyed the evening.
On behalf of the teachers, I would like to express our thanks for
the lovely Teacher Appreciation Luncheon that was provided by
the H.S.A. Special thanks to Mrs. Ashley Putney who has been the
hospitality chair for this school year. Thanks also to the parent volunteers who did lunch duty so that the teachers could be free. You
are all appreciated by us.
H.S.A. Board Meeting - The Board and I met last week. I am delighted to report for those who may not have been present at the
performances, that the DWTS Fundraiser raised $15,647.44. We
are so grateful to Sydney Penny and Serena Lau who chaired this
event. Some of the proceeds of this event will be used for student
enrichment activities, supplemental classroom materials, as well as
Science materials for the next school year. Thank you to all the
committee members who worked to make this event such a success.
Science Lab Project - A planning committee has been working
together to plan the creation of a new lab in the Tileston Center.
Plans have been drawn for the space, a major donor has met with
the committee, and we have determined that we will create this
space in phases due to the costs. You will be hearing more about
the opportunities of how you or possibly your company may help
us realize this goal. If you work for a company which may support
this type of project, please let me know.

know. I will let the respective coach know. Practices begin in
August. All athletes must have three required forms filled out and
turned in before they can begin practices. I will have the forms at
the banquet, and they can be picked up in my office until the end
of the school year.
