7-5-15 Bulletin - Sacred Heart Cathedral
The Cathedral Community 296 Flower City Park, Rochester, NY 14615 (585) 254-3221, Fax: (585) 254-8970 www.cathedralcommunity.org ~ [email protected] Our Mission Statement We are an urban, Roman Catholic parish that worships and gathers at the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rochester. Our mission is to reach all in our community and beyond, teach the word of God, and send forth ministers of the Gospel. Jessep, shouted in court in the 1992 classic movie, A Few Good Men. “They can’t handle the truth,” is what the Spirit is telling Ezekiel in this weekend’s first reading from the beginning of this prophetic book. But they would know there is a prophet among them. And the people of Nazareth questioned Jesus’ teaching. They didn’t want to handle the truth. “Who do you think you are?” the people of Nazareth seem to be asking him “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown, and among his own kin, and in his own house.” When we are faced with someone like Jesus, someone with a generous heart, a wide vision and a great spirit, our reactions are very often filled with jealousy, selfishness and suspicion. His own people couldn’t recognize the holiness of Jesus, because they had never really accepted their own. They couldn’t honor his relationship with God, because they had never explored their own sense of belonging to the Lord. They couldn’t see the Messiah standing right beside them, because he looked too much like one of them. Until we see ourselves as people beloved of God, the prophets and messengers who rise among us will struggle to be heard and accepted for whom they truly are. Continued on page 2 … July 5, 2015 14th Sunday In Ordinary Time We warmly welcome you to the Cathedral! We are happy that you have joined us this weekend. FARM STAND — July thru Sept. Wednesdays 2:30—6:00 p.m. Ridgeway Avenue Parking Lot Page 2 July 5, 2015 The Cathedral Community Pastoral Perspectives con’t… Today’s gospel warns us to be on guard against certain attitudes that are incompatible with the example of Jesus: the human tendency to be small in mind and heart. May the Lord grant us magnanimous hearts so that we may look far beyond ourselves and recognize the goodness, greatness and beauty of other people, instead of being jealous of their gifts. God’s power alone can save us from emptiness and hopelessness. • Thought for the week: Remember and revere the hard times, for they will become the stories you most like to tell. • Smile for the week: “Definitions Not in the Dictionary”: Adult – a person who has stopped growing at both ends and is now growing in the middle. God bless! Have a wonderful week! Fr. Kevin McKenna Last week, the Supreme Court issued a decision with possible profound effects. It ruled same sex marriages to be a constitutional right. The Catholic Church teaches, along with many other faith traditions, that the State cannot redefine marriage. The Church believes that God is the creator of marriage which includes the gift of co-creating life. Marriage not only involves a commitment of each spouse to each other, but also a commitment to the care and upbringing of children born of that union. The Church will continue to affirm the teachings regarding marriage as a vocation between a man and a woman committed to each other by vows to a life shared until the death of one of the spouses. But as many of our bishops have reminded us, all are invited to be a part of God’s family--- the Church. Our Catholic teaching calls us to treat all people with respect, compassion, sensitivity and love. All people are called to journey with Jesus and so all who attempt to do so have a place in the Church. Tuition Assistance Scholarships The Cathedral Community is committed to helping families afford a quality education in the Catholic tradition for children grades K-12. To be eligible for scholarship assistance from the parish you must be a registered and supporting member of the Cathedral Community and participate in the parish life of the Cathedral Community. S c r ip t ure S tu dy f or N e x t Su nd ay Next Sunday, July 12, 2015, is the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings will be Amos 7:12-15; Ephesians 1:3-14; and Mark 6:7-13. Our readings next Sunday again deal with the role of the prophet in God’s plan of salvation. Amos, “a shepherd and dresser of sycamores” is sent away by Amaziah, a priest of Bethel. The words of the prophet Amos are considered a threat to the status quo of worship and practice in the northern kingdom where he lived. He is sent to Judah to share the challenging message that Bethel did not want to hear. Amos basically says to Amaziah that he did not ask for the role of prophet, but as he went about his business it was God who said to him, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel.” In the Gospel reading, Jesus sends the apostles out two by two, with authority over unclean spirits, to spread the Gospel message and to preach repentance. Anticipating that not everyone will be glad to hear the message, Jesus says “whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.” One scholar makes the point that “Primarily, the scripture doesn’t tell us what to do, but who we are.” Our second reading from the letter to the Ephesians reminds us, quite explicitly, who we are. We are those who have been blessed in Christ “with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” and chosen to be holy. We have been destined to be adopted by God; we are redeemed and forgiven. We have our hope in Christ, we have heard the word of truth and we exist to praise God. Aware of this identity, we cannot help but share in the role of prophet entrusted to us at our baptisms. We cannot stop testifying through word and action, whether others pay attention or not, to the love of God that Christ has revealed to us. Rose Davis Pasta Dinner Angie Capone and her “crew” will serve an all-you-can-eat Pasta Dinner honoring Saints Anne and Joachim on Sunday, July 26 following the 11:15 a.m. mass. Dinner will be served in the Cathedral Hall from 12:30 until 2:30 pm.
