THE DEBUTANTE
PROCESS
For the past ten years, the Alpha Pearls
Cotillion Program has been a vehicle for
many to help support the educational
dreams of our youth.
In the past,
debutantes have been presented with
scholarships ranging from $500 -$10,000 at
the cotillion event. The debutante program
also offers an opportunity for the
participants to develop a commitment to
volunteer service. On December 13, 2011,
the debutantes volunteered at North Fulton
Charities and on Martin Luther King Day
of Service, they volunteered at the Atlanta
Community Tool Bank. . Leading up to
the cotillion, the debutantes participate in a
seven month process that involves a series
of etiquette workshops, service projects,
and cultural and spiritual awareness
activities.

Phi Phi Omega Chapter hosted its sixth biennial ‘Alpha Pearls
Strands of Elegance Cotillion Ball’ on March 3, 2012 at the JW
Marriott Atlanta Buckhead. Master and mistress of ceremonies were
news anchors Chesley McNeil and Karyn Greer of 11Alive Morning
News in Atlanta. The guest speaker for the affair was Rebecca
Franklin, founder/CEO of Women Works Publishing, Inc. Other
honored guests were Soror Kim Boyd, former International
Leadership Committee Member, and Soror Regina Crothers,
International Leadership Committee Member. Prior to the Ball,
debutantes participated in a variety of enriching planned programs
that included leadership workshops, service projects, father/daughter
outing, mother/daughter tea, family worship service, and etiquette
workshops.
More than 500 guests witnessed the elegant affair that
debuted twenty-one of the North Fulton’s finest college bound young
ladies. The debutantes were formally introduced to society by their
fathers. After introductions, the debutantes and their escorts dazzled
the audience with a traditional waltz, followed by a modern dance.
Debutantes were recognized for their achievements
and awarded scholarships. Debutante Winbriel Gandy, the daughter
of Dr. Winston Gandy and Soror Michelle Gandy, was crowned Miss
Debutante. The first runner up was Debutante Yasmine Griffiths,
the daughter of Dr. Arthur Griffiths and Soror Deborah Griffiths.
The second runner up was Debutante Mallory Lyles, the daughter of
Dr. Michael Lyles and Marsha Lyles. Debutante Kamaria Laing, the
daughter of Ian Laing and Soror Elaine Thomas, was honored for
having the highest scholastic achievement. The cotillion was chaired
by Sorors Patria Mitchell and Kenitra Williams.
