What a unique opportunity we have to share the gospel with the world in creative, engaging ways— changing lives in the process! Our emerging ministry in China is something you will continue to hear about in the coming years. We’ve only just begun and the need for God’s Word in that country is endless. In order to see the unique opportunities first-hand, I will be visiting China in 2014 and look forward to meeting church leaders and pastors we are supporting with thousands of Bibles. This year we once again sent teams to countries around the world, including Zambia, Chile, Colombia and Russia. We were also engaged in Brazil in an unprecedented way: by faith we committed to printing over 1 million copies of a bilingual Gospel of John. This was in support of hundreds of churches and thousands of Christians in their dream of evangelizing Brazil in the weeks leading up to the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Thanks to our donors, we were able to fulfill that commitment, and in addition, sent 42 Gideons to Brazil to help share the gospel in 12 cities. Our fiscal year also witnessed the increasing growth of the NewLife smartphone app. By the end of 2013/14, the NewLife app was available in eight languages on three smartphone platforms—making it available to 2.3 billion people around the world! God’s Word was shared in new ways again this year. The new Redemption Scripture magazine offered the Gospel of John and excerpts from the book of Romans in a visual way to prisoners and others in rehabilitation and correctional facilities. The Hope magazine was released in French (as Espoire) and we printed a special edition of our Gospel of John for YC youth events happening in Canada. What’s ahead in the coming year? • The launch of the Global Church Partnership Plan • A national campaign for Canada called “Love it. Live it. Share it.” that engages the church in community evangelism • An increased commitment to China • New updates of the app in more of the most spoken languages of the world • The introduction of a seasonal Scripture magazine called Light • Some new ways of communicating with donors and supporters • A redesigned website to help us in recruitment, fundraising and communicating the cause There has never been a better, more exciting time to be a Canadian Gideon than today. We’re thankful to God for giving us these amazing opportunities to impact lives and share the gospel! Yours in Christ, DeWayne Fliss Board Chair 5 6 The Year of china H ow appropriate that at the end of our first year of ministry in Communist China, the NewLife app would be released in Chinese. Now over 1.3 billion people would have access to a digital tool to guide them to the gospel message of Jesus Christ. Head and shoulders above any other development in the 2013/14 fiscal year for The Gideons International In Canada was the beginning of its relationship with the church in China. Following an invitation from Go With God (GWG) to explore a ministry partnership, a small team from Head Office flew to China on June 1, 2013 to see first-hand what this opportunity looked like. It became immediately clear that a unique door had been opened to The Gideons, one that connected this Canadian ministry to a massive church body eager for Bibles and gospel teaching. Through its partnership with GWG, The Gideons International In Canada would be able to help the Chinese church grow, develop a working relationship with the China Christian Council, and explore other unique ways to share the gospel in a complex and highly controlled nation. After that initial trip, four more distribution campaigns occurred over the next 12 months. • 75 churches were visited, from mega churches to house churches • The gospel was openly preached in each church • Over 78,000 Bibles were shared • More than 1,300 people made public commitments for Christ • A seminar on Christian business principles engaged over 30 Chinese business owners Recognizing the need for onsite support, we opened an office in Beijing where a Chinese national will work for us as a full-time staff member. His role will go beyond translation to include trip planning, relationship building with pastors, and project development. More campaigns to China are already scheduled for the 2014/15 fiscal year, which will include participation from board members and their spouses. These experiences in the complex and ancient nation of China will serve to enhance our association’s commitment to supporting the burgeoning church in evangelism and growth. 7 And he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” Mark 16:15 NLT The one thing Since 1911, we’ve been doing the same thing—with no apologies. Year after year, Gideon members have been focused on one singular goal: Sharing the gospel with copies of God’s Word. The methods have evolved, the language has changed, the Scripture covers and versions have changed. But the core motivation, the central theme, the overriding ambition—this has never changed in the history of the association. It’s what makes us unique in the ministry world: we evangelize with Scriptures. We share the Good News of Jesus Christ with Bibles, New Testaments and Scripture portions. Members have access to free copies of God’s Word which they pass along to someone else while sharing the gospel message whenever and wherever they can. How we do that one thing will shift and change over time—like the picture above. But as long as we remember why we do what we do, we’ll never stray from doing what God has called us to do. 8 Global Snapshot nations touched: 139 165 2013/14 canadian churches 3 years Total Scriptures Shipped: 2,590,725 (including app downloads) The Testament Insert Program (TIP) is a partnership tool whereby Gideons help churches reach their communities with God’s Word. of TIP 52 Number distributions in 2013/14 Scriptures 13,309 TIP shared across Canada International impact One on One Group DecisionsDecisions 27,70052,560 Vanuatu10,300 Zambia 3,629 16,795 Chile & Colombia 6,387 12,034 China (four trips) 1,303 Russia 60700 Mexico 651,500 Brazil 5,95621,531 In 2013/14, The Gideons International In Canada sent Gideon teams to eight countries to share copies of God’s Word and the Good News of the Gospel. On each trip volunteers worked side by side with local church members to distribute Scriptures, and invite as many people as possible into a relationship with Christ. Wherever possible, new believers were asked to fill out a card, like the ones pictured here, so that the church could follow up with them and invite them into a church family. 9 Mobilizing for Impact Mobilizing members, church partners and everyday believers to share God’s Word and the Gospel message is another way The Gideons International In Canada is making an impact on the world. In 2013/14, 143 Canadians volunteered to travel overseas for the purpose of evangelism and Scripture distribution. That total is eclipsed by the number of volunteers in the receiving nations. Hundreds of church volunteers spent long days with the Canadians to reach their communities for Christ. Allana Translator in Fortaleza, Brazil “It was really good to have the Canadian team here today because before they came we were a little bit afraid to go to the streets and evangelize. We thought people were going to be hard, but when I was with my group, it just seemed so easy to talk to people. They were so open to receive. They told me sharing the Word and bringing people hope is exactly what they do, not just locally—all around the world. I was like, “Wow...this is for me, I love this ministry.” However, in a world that has rapidly altered how people interact with causes of all kinds, the Gideon ministry is continuing to re-shape its membership model. Finding relevant and impactful ways for new members to connect and work together is a priority for future growth. 30 % increase in giving by Members in 2013/14 AARON CROSS - In Regina we have so many immigrants whom I interact with daily. Equip Christian students to reach their peers with free Scriptures from SendMe. The model is simple: register online, order free copies of the Gospel of John, download the NewLife app to your smart phone, and engage your friends with the Good News. With the right investment in relationship building and engaging young people with the cause, SendMe has the potential to change young people around the world. A staff member dedicates a portion of her week for communication with churches, young people, and ministries like YC who invite SendMe to participate. In my community, I found that most of the people in my school did not have access to a Bible. I really felt the Spirit driving me to take action. Through The Gideons’ SendMe program, I received free Gospels of John to give out. The program was relaunched in 2013/14 with new racks and cards as well as an expanded distribution model to churches. Each of the 1,180 racks shipped out last year contains 72 cards. The historical average of $30/card means a potential revenue of $2.5 million. That’s why The Gideons has joined forces with Russian Ministries to form a long-term partnership with one goal: to share the gospel in Eastern Europe. Following a successful fundraising campaign through Gideon Fall Banquets in 2013, thousands of Scriptures in a wide variety of formats were printed for evangelism, as well as translating the NewLife app into Russian: • 100,000 bilingual New Testaments • 100,000 Russian Hope magazines • 25,000 complete Russian Bibles In February 2014, during the Sochi Winter Olympics, a Canadian team flew to Russia to begin a two-week evangelism campaign. From Southern Caucasus up to the city of Moscow, the team engaged with people young and old to share the gospel. $443,141 in funds raised for this campaign 225,000 scriptures printed 36 downloads of NewLife in Russia during campaign Nina wandered the streets of Vorontsov, Russia, feeling very alone. It was February 15th, the 25th anniversary of the day when Russian troops had finally pulled their troops out of Afghanistan. Nina had lost her son in that war, so for her it was a significant day. Taking her regular afternoon walk, Nina encountered something unexpected: foreigners came walking towards her. They were Canadian Gideons. Nina received the Hope magazine. “How did you find me?” Nina asked, “I need hope, I am all alone. Especially today.” Key to impacting change in Russia and other former Soviet republics is equipping young Christians who have a passion to change their nation for Christ. The Gideon team benefitted from the enthusiasm and translation skills of some of the students from Russian Ministry’s School Without Walls, a leadership and Bible training program to empower the next generation to lead their nation to Christ. “God found you. In fact God is with you,” the Canadians replied. “And He loves you very much.” Nina was lifted from her sorrow, and found new hope in Christ Jesus that day. 19 Engaging a Nation A Brazilian student is transfixed by the story of a Christian athlete. Each of the one million Portuguese/English Gospels of John included several testimonies of well-known Brazilian soccer players. Through these stories, the attention of people young and old was captured long enough to understand that these booklets included a powerful story of God’s Son and His sacrificial act of grace and love. 20 brazil How do you begin to touch a nation of 200 million people with the gospel message? You come alongside a network of hundreds of churches and support them in reaching their fellow countrymen. While one million copies of the Gospel of John was the largest order of Scriptures we’d ever placed, in Brazil those bilingual booklets quickly vanished. Walking side by side with Brazilians from all evangelical denominations, our team of 42 Gideons shared the gospel with people of all ages and from all walks of life. We will never hear all the stories of lives transformed by the copies of God’s Word shared in Brazil, but based on the sampling we have, we believe this is just the beginning of the partnership with the Church in that beautiful nation. $607,650 in funds raised for this campaign 1,020,005 COPIES of the GOSPEL OF JOHN 324 downloads of NewLife in Brazil during campaign We met Kelly in her classroom at school. Her smile was not always this big. But after receiving Jesus, a joy filled her heart and her smile lit up the room. Later in the day we were walking the streets sharing the gospel and noticed Kelly with her mom. Kelly wanted us to share with her mom, too, and give her a Gospel of John. But that wasn’t all. Kelly wanted another Gospel of John for her brother who was in prison. She wanted us to write him a note on the inside explaining this Good News so that he too could receive Jesus. With murder on his heart and a large knife in his pocket, Marcus was intent on murdering someone who had insulted him. God arranged for him to find a friend in a bar with a Gospel of John shared by someone on our team. He began to read it and something changed in him. “I read this book, and I changed my mind, I’m not going to kill my friend.” At 81 years of age, Marie found Jesus. She finally heard the Good News about His love. Marie heard the gospel while sitting outside her house in Brazil. A Canadian from our mission team shared with her and equipped her with God’s Word. 21 Strength to strength... that’s the way The Gideons describes the overarching purpose of its strategic partnerships with other Canadian ministries. By combining our collective efforts, more Scriptures can be supplied to more people, and thus have a greater global impact for Christ. Impactful partnerships Good Hope Ministries Development Communication Association All of the teaching we do in Malawi begins with the foundation of God’s Word. Since we began our partnership with The Gideons, we’ve given the Tumbuka people 32,000 Bibles. Not only do we teach from it, but the people now have copies of their own to read. When we give out Bibles, we can almost start a war when we don’t have enough. We learned to use a system of handing out tickets at the beginning of the day so that we would have the exact amount of Bibles. Many were in disbelief that they could have their own copy. —Anna Ebert, Good Hope Ministries (pictured above) 22 Looking forward global church partnership plan The coming year will feature the launch of a new partnership model between The Gideons and local Canadian churches. Formed to support Bible-starved churches around the world, the GCPP will also equip Canadian churches with Scriptures for existing—or desired—evangelism programs. By including The Gideons in their missions budget for a minimum of $100/month, Canadian churches will strengthen their own community outreach and impact the global church family at the same time. global impact The 2014/15 year of ministry will see Canadian Gideons sharing God’s Word face to face in China, Vietnam, Haiti and Russia—and more! Partnerships will continue to introduce our ministry to new places, and NewLife will continue to plant seeds all over the world. Love Live Share it canadian impact This fiscal year will see the beginning of a 2-year campaign to be intentional in reaching urban Canada for Christ. From coast to coast, The Gideons will be partnering with churches as they reach their communities with the gospel, supported by Gideon-supplied Scriptures. 23 Sharing Scriptures Shipped and Downloaded in God’s Word Canada Comparative Years 2011/12 June 1/11 May 31/12 Bibles Testaments Large Print Medical Youth Personal Worker Public Ministry Bilingual Foreign Language Service/RCMP Gospel Of John/ Scripture Portions Print Domestic May 31/13 137,065 31,284 30,739 23,591 6,721 163,727 13,071 152,882 40,590 13,014 4,501 20,626 7,600 155,262 9,351 180,116 1,660 11,001 7,590 16,109 6,537 119,494 11,797 170,052 7,370 12,802 6,977 0 88,936 255,639 555,162 513,426 637,516 0 3,989 8,091 555,162 517,415 645,607 Full Bibles 5% Bible Downloads 1% 637,516 Large Print NTs 2% Medical NTs 1% Personal Worker NTs - 2% 555,162 Scripture Portions 40% 513,426 2013/14 June 1/13 May 31/14 Bible Downloads total Domestic 2012/13 June 1/12 - Youth NTs 19% Public Ministry NTs 26% 2011/12 2012/13 2013/14 Printed Scriptures Shipped in Canada Service NTs 1% Foreign Language NTs - 2% Bilingual NTs 1% Percentage of Total Scriptures by Type 24 Scriptures Shipped and Downloaded internationally Comparative Years 2011/12 June 1/12 - 2012/13 June 1/12 May 31/13 June 1/13 May 31/14 794,047 0 572,655 1,249 1,940,083 5,035 794,047 573,904 1,945,118 May 31/13 Scriptures (Print) Bible Downloads total international 2013/14 2,590,725 Scriptures Shipped and Downloaded total 1,349,209 1,091,319 2011/12 2012/13 2013/14 Vanuatu Scriptures Shipped for Gideon Team Campaigns Zambia 1,587,158 Vanuatu10,929 Zambia130,000 Chile/Colombia113,940 Russia225,000 Mexico9,240 China 78,044 Brazil1,020,005 Chile/ Colombia Russia Brazil China Mexico 25 Auditor’s Report The Audit Committee and National Cabinet review and approve the annual financial statements.
