Program Notes
Hip is What?
This original composition from Bruce Evans lets the whole sax ensemble
shine. The idea came from his remembrances of childhood in band playing
sax, not having the ‘coolest’ parts to play. He solves this issue with some
difficult yet toe-tapping licks you’ll love.
All the Small Things
"All the Small Things” is a song by the pop/punk band Blink-182. It was the
second single released from the band's third album Enema of the State.
Written by guitarist Tom DeLonge for his girlfriend, the song is one of
Blink-182's most popular songs and is often considered their signature song.
When I Fall in Love
"When I Fall in Love" is a popular song, written by Victor Young (music)
and Edward Heyman (lyrics). It was introduced in the film One Minute to
Zero. The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it,
though the first hit version was by Doris Day. This version features senior
alto sax soloist Dan Dunas.
English Folk Song Suite
“English Folk Song Suite” was commissioned by the band of the Royal
Military School of Music. It was premiered on 4 July 1923, at Kneller Hall,
H.E. Adkins conducting. In three movements, the Suite contains many
different folk songs from the Norfolk and Somerset regions of England,
including Seventeen Come Sunday, Pretty Caroline, Dives and Lazarus, My
Bonny Boy, Green Bushes, Blow Away the Morning Dew, High Germany,
and The Tree So High. Historically, the suite is considered (along with
Gustav Holst’s two suites for military band) to be a cornerstone work in the
literature, and one of the earliest “serious” works for the wind band.
