NATIONAL SPECIALTY2006
Thanks to everyone for helping make our 2006 National
Specialty such a memorable event. Naomi Hanson, Show
Chairman, Pat Fernandes, Site Manager and the entire
Show Committee did a superb job of keeping things
running smoothly. The trophy table, glowing glassware,
enhanced by tiny blue fairy lights, was breathtaking!
Ways and Means Chairman, Phyllis Huffstetler offered
an array of high quality ALAC logo items. Helen
Brown,ALAC Rescue National Coordinator, hosted a
fun-filled evening of Lhasa Bingo. Hard-working Carol
Hess presided over a well-organized day of performance
events. Joyce Johanson and Don Evans, Breeder
Education Co-Chairmen, brought us a thought-provoking
Breeder Education Seminar with Joyce moderating a
panel discussion among early ROM breeders: Marianne
Nixon, Dorothy Joan Kendall and Cassandra de la Rosa.
ENGLISHIMPORT BEST OFBREED!
Congratulations to this year's National Specialty winners!
What a high quality entry it was and we appreciated the
expert opinions of our judges, Carolyn Herbel, Danny
Moore, Keith Kort and Dr. Robert Berndt. Our National
Specialty winner, Ch. Showa Fantastic With Pantulf was
also Best of Breed at the AKC National Invitational in
Long Beach. Kudos to U.K. breeder Irene Plumstead and
to co-owners Edith Jones and Linda Smith for sharing
him with us. Next year we venture across mountains,
rivers, plains and deserts to another corner of this
country, Houston,Texas. I've got my cowgirl hat and
I'm working on my two step. Hope to see Y'ALL there!
Special thanks, also, to Sarah Fitzgerald, outgoing ALAC
Treasurer. Once she gets over the shock of having empty
surface area on her dining room table, I trust Sarah will
find the time to continue helping ALAC in one capacity or
another. For right now, her insight and keen intelligence
will be sorely missed at our Board meetings. Welcome to
new Board members Lynette Clooney and Kathy Fallon.
Thank you for volunteering to serve ALAC.
ILLUSTRATED GUIDE
Last, but certainly not least...it is true that good things
come to those who wait! If you have not already received
the brand new Illustrated Guide to the Breed Standard, you
should be seeing it in your mail shortly. The final graphic
design, courtesy of Marianne Nixon, is exquisite. Every
Lhasa fancier owes a deep debt of gratitude to Marianne
and to Breed Standard Committee Chairman, Susan
Giles, for their tireless attention to detail. Throughout
the process, the BSC insisted on getting it not just sorta
right or half-right but really, really, really right. Thanks
to committee members Steve Campbell, Midge Hylton,
Stephanie Kodis, Ray Sledzilc and Bobbie Wood. Because
of their hard work, this is a document that ALAC members
will be able to point to with pride for years to come.
Thanks to All For All You Do,
The Best Is Yet To Come!
THANK YOU!
Before I forget, thanks to Cassandra de la Rosa, outgoing
ALAC Board member, for her years of dedicated service
to ALAC. We are fortunate that she is continuing to write
the Lhasa Apso column for the AKC Gazette.

Will he be No. 1,2 or 3?
We don't know yet, we have to wait and see,
Because we needed to get this ad in - Quick
Smart,
But We know he is 'Number One' in our Hearts !
Linda we think you are "Fantastic" too,
For all you have done and all that you do,
To keep the Orlane name alive and well.
For your kindness and friendship, we hope you
can tell
That we are all really very proud,
and want to shout it out real loud,
Hooray! Hooray!
Orlane is back on top in a big way!!
If only that someone special was here,
Lets hope that he's watching and how he would
cheer,
"Well done kid", it's what you deserve
Comes from all of us, both from Heaven
and Earth.
Many Congratulations Linda Kendall-Smith,
the reward you deserve for all your hard work through the good times and the bad times,
we could not be more proud and pleased for you.
Best Wishes from your friends

Excellent for high performance dogs, hunting, sporting, agility, flyball,
obedience and conformation dogs. Also, for obese, diabetic and epileptic dogs.
Barking at the Moon contains no grains, and only one low source of carbohy

drates. Barking is high protein sustained quick energy.
The theory of the Atkins Diet is that if you use carbs as a source of
energy, the body releases energy slowly. But if you lower the carbs, the body
shifts to using fat as a source of quick energy. Also, this helps you to burn
calories and lose weight. A molecule of a carbohydrate / glucose(blood sugar)
produces 38 molecules of ATP(energy). But a molecule offat produces 129
molecules ofATP for fast energy.
We gave Barking to several different performance owners for their dogs. In the follow-up, the owners told
us that "the dogs went like lightning." Some dogs even beat their previous time records.Heavy grain dog foods use
cheap ingredients as fillers. However, this type of diet may result in obesity and diabetes.
These allergic and unhealthy grains are soybeans (also called lecithin) wheat, corn, sorghum and also white
rice. White rice is useless and is missing 75% of its nutrient value. White rice is listed as rice in the ingredients.
Brewers rice is worse. It is missing 85% of its nutrient value. These are the broken grains of white rice that fall to
the floor of the mill and used to be swept into the garbage. Now they are put into some dog foods. Sweepings are
technically referred to as "mill run." Solid Gold doesn't use these grains.
Solid Gold uses brown rice in its other dog foods but not in Barking at the Moon. Brown rice contains the
B vitamins and other nutrients.
Dogs cannot maintain health, if they are constantly fed low source nutrient grains as mentioned above.
When the pancreas must deal with these non-nourishing grains, it produces insulin which drives glucose into the
cells for energy. But, overuse of insulin receptors wears them out, this results in chronic hyperglycemia, also called
"low blood sugar." This results in large portions of the "sugar" to be stored as fat, resulting in obesity and diabetes,
This damages the arterial wall which leads to other osclerosis and heart problems.
If the pancreas keeps having to work overtime, it eventually wears out. You can never give animal/poultry
fat to a dog with pancreatitis, since it can't handle it. That is the reason that Solid Gold uses only vegetable oils.
However, we never use sunflower oil, which the Swedish National Cancer Institute says that sunflower oil increases
the risk of cancer by 69%.
Many cancer and heart problems have an apparent hereditary tendency. However, it may be that poor
nutritional habits are passed from one generation to the next. Thus, this may account for the family tendency
towards cancer, heart disease and skin allergies.
Barking at the Moon uses only one source of carbohydrates-potatoes. We use only a small amount to hold
the formula together.
John Hopkins University epilepsy study recommends to cut out grains to lessen the frequency of seizures.
Remember, Barking at the Moon uses no grains.
Cancer and heart doctors recommend a low carbohydrate diet, since cancer cells thrive on carbohydrates.

October Board Meeting
ALAC Board Meeting
October 16, 2006
Red Lion Hotel
Olympia, WA
The meeting was called to order by President, Leslie
Baumann at 6PM. Present were Leslie Baumann, Joyce
Johanson, Jan Bruton, Sarah Fitzgerald, Cassandra de la
Rosa, Pat Keen-Fernandes, Naomi Hanson, Polly Naumann,
Marsha Susag, Bobbie Wood and Tom Worlton.
Leslie asked for any addenda to the printed agenda.
It was decided to call Ray Sledzik for his Delegate Report
as the first order of business. Ray explained the
controversy over the AKC agreement with Petland to offer
instant registrations for puppies bought from this pet shop
chain. Eventually after much argument against the AKC's
policy by the dog fancy, the AKC backed down.
Leslie moved to waive the reading of the minutes of the last
meeting.
President's Report
Regarding the renal dysplasia project, there has been a
good response to the kits and we are moving forward
with that.Leslie has been very impressed with many of the
committee chairs including Naomi Hanson, Marsha Susag
and Joyce Johanson.
Secretary's Report
The Secretary's report consisting of a review of the motions
passed and the discussions via e-mail since the conference
call meeting in March was printed in the agenda which
board members received beforehand.
Treasurer's Report
Sarah reported that there was $64,000.00 in the Treasury.
She has been in the process of moving the ALAC accounts
to the bank in St. Louis.
Committee Reports
(Leslie announced that if there is no action on a committee
report, we will continue on. All committee reports
submitted in advance were printed in the agenda.)
Awards- Bobbie Wood
Bobbie asked for discussion regarding awards for Rally.
Leslie felt that a Rally Novice title should be comparable
to an Agility Novice title or a CD and that over time it will
become more difficult to achieve a Rally Novice title just
like the Agility Novice title did. Regarding a Versatility
title, a dog would need a conformation title as well as 2 of
the 3 Performance titles. Pat suggested that Bobbie, after
discussions with participants in the Performance arena,
present her ideas and recommendations to the Board. The
committee needs to be considering what requirements
would constitute a Rally ROM.
1.1
Breeder Referral - Leslie Baumann
Since July, there seems to be a real drop off on inquiries
through the AKC website and through our own ALAC
website. Polly felt that this was true in other breeds as well.
Leslie would like to develop a program (WE CARE) and
re-vamp our online breeder directory with WE CARE as
the initial theme. We need to develop marketing tools to
differentiate ourselves from the puppy mills and pet shops.
The AKC will help us (for a price) develop a brochure
to go out with every puppy registration. It costs other clubs
of our size about $30/mo. to do this and Leslie thought
we should re-visit the idea. Like the puppy mills, ALAC
needs cute pictures of Lhasas on our website. Basically, all
ALAC's responsible breeders need to work together in this
competitive atmosphere where every puppy mill promotes
itself with cute puppy photos.
Breed Rescue - Helen Brown
Helen submitted an extensive report. Although the breed
rescue Treasury had been down, it would appear to be
coming back up - helped by the fundraiser at the National.
Helen has been involved in some rescue efforts of dogs from
the Amish puppy mills in Lancaster County. The rescue
community is trying to document the condition of these
dogs in order to put political pressure on the Governor of
Pennsylvania to shut these puppy mills down. ALAC Rescue
will also work with ALAC breeders to place older dogs.
Breed Standard
Quotes for printing the Illustrated Guide were presented and
discussed. Bobbie moved, Pat seconded, to print the Guide
in color. Bobbie felt that by printing the Guide in color, it
presented ALAC in a serious and professional light. Leslie
called for the vote and the motion (#06-9) passed.
The next discussion revolved around the paper quality.
Currently, the committee is proposing printing 1000 copies
which would mean 1 for every ALAC member plus one for
every judge who is approved to judge Lhasa Apsos,
Group judges and BIS judges. Polly moved, Naomi
seconded, that we do the cover in 80 lb stock and 65 lb
stock for the inside pages. Marianne Nixon pointed out that
the quality of the 65 lb stock was important. The paper
has to be sufficiently opaque so that one side does not bleed
through to the other side. The printer should be able to
recommend the best choice. Leslie suggested amending the
motion to say 80 lb. cover stock, 65 lb high
quality glossy inside or better depending on printer's
recommendations. The motion (#06-10) passed. Pat
moved and Joyce seconded that 1000 copies be printed
not to exceed $3000.00. Discussion on the number of
Guides to be printed followed. Bobbie emphasized that a
sample copy needed to be printed first for approval, to be
sent to Marianne. It was decided to revise the number to be
printed to 1500 and not to exceed $3500.00. The motion
(#06-11) passed.

Breeder Education - Joyce Johanson
Joyce had nothing new to report except that the committee
is looking for new members. The main charge of the
committee is to provide a program for the National Specialty
as well as timely articles for the Bulletin and the Website.
The committee has requested a standing budget of $500.00.
Bulletin - Bobbie Wood
All the premium pages were sold for the current Bulletin.
Bobbie is still looking for a person to solicit ads. Sarah
reported that the Bulletin is still a little shy of breaking even.
Leslie wondered if ALAC should publish only 3 regular
Bulletins a year and make the Yearbook the 4th issue.
Discussion on the timing of the Yearbook followed. Tom
moved that ALAC publish 4 issues of the Bulletin a year,
with the 4th issue being the Yearbook. Polly seconded and
the motion (#06-12) passed.
Finance - Polly Naumann
Polly thanked Sarah for helping in the transition. Polly's
goal is to get reports out that could be published in the
Bulletin. This way the membership could see what the
expenses and income for the National are.
Health and Genetics - Cathy Marley
No report was submitted but according to Leslie, the most
important thing that Cathy did this year was to set up the
ALAChealth.org website. The ALAC website is linked to this
one. We can solicit funding from the health website 501C3
tax exempt without doing it on the ALAC website. Joyce
thought it would be a good idea for members with personal
websites to have links to the ALAC website and to the ALAC
health website.
Historian - Linda Crabill Byrne
Linda is concerned about the condition of some of the older
archives and would like to see a project of conversion to
DVD. Leslie is planning to meet with Linda on this.
National Specialty - Naomi Hanson
Regarding judge selection, the first ballot contains the
names of all the Lhasa judges and members vote for 10 from
this list. Of the top 10 from this ballot, members vote for 4.
After determining the top 4 vote-getters, the show chair calls
them to see who is available. At this point, the show
committee wants to add that if any of these 4 top vote
getters have judged at any part of the National within the
past 3 years, they are not eligible. From the final list of
4 eligible judges, the members must vote for 2. The top
vote-getter judges the National and the next top vote-getter
judges the Regional. By making it mandatory to vote for 2
on the final ballot, the problem of "loading up" the result
is lessened. Regarding the schedule of the National week,
Naomi is going to suggest to the show committee that the
1st day be the Independent Specialty, the 2nd day be the
Regional and the 3rd day be the Performance day and the
final two days be the National. That way, the Performance
competitors will be more a part of the National. Show site
possibilities for the future such as Boston, Frederick and St.
Louis were discussed.
Ways and Means - Phyllis Huffstetler
The committee has purchased less for the National this year
knowing that the entry was less. Phyllis is looking for items
for next year and is requesting a budget of $750.00 for logo
items. Leslie felt we needed to be able to sell items on line.
Pay-Pal is difficult because we are not 501-C3. Money
raised by Ways and Means goes to the club's general fund
and money raised by the McCartney sales goes to the
Specialty fund.
Website - Rita Cloutier
Leslie reported that for the most part, current information
is up on the website. Leslie can go directly into the online
Breeder Directory and update information. Discussion
followed regarding what was needed to make improvements
on the website. Tom will join the website committee and
make necessary corrections and additions to the site.
Leslie felt each committee chair should be responsible
for overseeing their respective committee sections on the
website.
Yearbook - Marsha Susag
Marsha reported that the Yearbooks are printed and available
at the Specialty. It includes 77 ads and broke even. Bobbie
and Marsha will work out a time table for the publishing of
the Bulletins and the Yearbook.
Health and Education Trust Treasury - Tom Worlton
Leslie asked if Tom had received any communication from
the stockbroker who has the remaining Altrea stock. Tom
said that all he had received were the proceeds from the sale
of 100 shares but he had not received any other
mailings or statements.
NEW BUSINESS
2008 National Location - Rita Cloutier
It was decided that the show chair would ask Rita for more
information on the Boston site.
NAIA - Jan Bruton
Jan presented 2 letters from the National Animal Interest
Alliance and will send copies out for the Board to read.
The Board then went into Executive Session.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:10PM.
Respectfully submitted, Jan Bruton, Secretary

ALAC Annual Meeting
October 19, 2006
Red Lion Hotel
Olympia, WA
The meeting was called to order by President
Leslie Baumann at 4:10 PM. Leslie moved to
waive the minutes of the last annual meeting since
they had already been printed in the Bulletin.
Cheryl Zink seconded and the motion passed.
President's Report - Leslie Baumann
Leslie introduced the Officers and Board
members. She thanked Cassandra de la Rosa as
an outgoing board member for her service. She
thanked everyone for working together so well
during the Specialty week.
Secretary's Report- Jan Bruton
Since the last Board meeting in March, the Board
approved 3 motions as follows:
(Motion #06-6) Joyce moved and Polly seconded
that the ALAC Health and Education Trust send
Mary (Whiteley) $1000.00 to support further
research and testing on Mutation B.
(Motion #06-7) Pat moved and Joyce seconded
that if we do have Lhasa participation, then we
offer the Top Performing Breed medallions at the
upcoming AKC National Invitational Dec. 2-3.
(Motion #06-8) Jan moved and Sarah seconded
that the ALAC Board approve the request from the
Breeder Education Committee for $500 to cover
the costs of the panel participantsione night hotel
stay during the 2006 National.
Treasurer's Report - Sarah Fitzgerald
As of October 14th, ALAC has $64,000.00 in our
account. The bank account is in the process of
being transferred to St. Louis. Dues payments are
coming in. The Bulletin is still not in a money- _
making situation so the Board has decided to print
3 regular Bulletins a year, with the 4th issue being
the Yearbook.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Awards Committee - Cheryl Zink and Bobbie
Wood
Bobbie emphasized the importance of reading the
awards form and itemizing whatever is being paid.
Breeder Referral
Bev Drake, Leslie Baumann and Pat KeenFernandes have received very few phone calls
lately. If you have a litter of puppies or are
expecting one, let these ladies know. She has
had a number of compliments from puppy buyers
about ALAC members and how helpful they
were. She emphasized the importance of trying
to differentiate ourselves(ALAC breeders) from the
pet stores, puppy mills and on-line puppy mills
through "We Care" policies.
Breed Rescue - Helen Brown
Rescue has had 2 initiatives this year. One is to
collect enough data to shut down some of the
Amish puppy mills. Approximately 50 different
rescue organizations are working on this. Also
volunteers are attending Pet Expos to educate the
public about puppy mills. In November, Lhasa
Rescue has been invited to participate in the
National Dog Show in Harrisburg. ALAC Rescue
is also offering a referral system to ALAC members
for finished champions as long as they are spayed
or neutered and up to date on vaccinations.
Financially, this was a difficult year for ALAC
Rescue.
It started the year with $16,300 and had
expenditures of $13,500. Fund raising this
year has included being part of the "I Give"
network, the Cafe Press, Rally to Rescue and
Cash for Critters (cash for cell phones and printer
cartridges). Some of the members of Rescue have
become involved in a program called S.A.R.T.
(State Animal Rescue Teams)for disaster relief.
Finally, Helen urged all of us to consider estate
planning with respect to our dogs - the rescue
website has a section on this topic. Leslie also
pointed out that the rescue website has a virtual

Breed Standard - Susan Giles
Bobbie reported that at the Board meeting, a
printer was selected for the Illustrated Guide and
it will be printed in color.
Breeder Education - Joyce Johanson
A very successful panel this week resulted in
requests for doing this more often. Leslie asked
for volunteers to serve on many of the committees
including the Breeder Education committee.
Bulletin - Bobbie Wood
Bobbie expressed her appreciation to all
the Bulletin advertisers (and for their timely
payments).
Futurity - Carol Hess
Carol reported that the Futurity nomination form
is once again on the website. She reminded
everyone that nominations are due within 90 days
of birth. Litter nominations for 2006 were down
from the year before (56 as compared to 71).
There were 40 Futurity entries this year which is
almost half of last year. If you have litters, please
nominate them. She thanked Keith Kort and
announced that the judge for next year will be
Ron Crowder.
Handbook - Jan Bruton
The new roster section of the Handbook was
sent out to all members this Spring. The cost
of printing and mailing this was approximately
$500. A number of extra rosters were printed and
sent to Joyce for new members.
Health and Genetics - Cathy Marley
In Cathy's absence, Leslie reported that 2 great
things have happened this year in Health and
Genetics. The first is the renal dysplasia test
which is up and running and available from the
dogenes.com website. ALAChealth.org, the
website for the Health and Education Trust, is also
up and running. If any member knows of other
articles that would add to the site, please let
Cathy know.
Historian - Linda Crabill Byrne
Leslie stated that we are trying to get some of our
old video footage onto DVD and that the AKC
may possibly be able to help with preserving old
archives. Linda thanked the membership for
participating in the photo contest.
Judges' Education - Pat Keen-Fernandes
There will be a small group of judges attending
the seminar in conjunction with this year's
National. If the occasion arises where the Lhasa
program would be appropriate, please contact
any member of the committee and they will assist
in getting this AKC approved seminar to you.
Membership - Joyce Johanson
There were 24 applications between October 105
and September '06. All were approved by the
Board.
National Specialty - Naomi Hanson
After the large round of applause died down for
our show chair, Naomi reported that next year
the National will be in Houston Texas the week
of October 21st at the Doubletree. The theme for
next year will be "Two-Step to Texas for a Real
Sweet Time". Pending AKC approval, the judges
are Barbara Schwartz for the National and Keke
Kahn for the Regional, as well as Ron Crowder
for the Futurity. Naomi encouraged people to
volunteer to work on the National.
Performance - Carol Hess
There were 8 Agility entrants this year with one
qualifier, 9 Obedience entrants with a HIT and
10 Rally entrants in ALAC's 1st Rally Trial - with
multiple qualifiers. Carol thanked all who stayed
past midnight to help set up for the Agility Trial.

To all Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu Breeders
From Dr. Mary Whiteley
Research involving pedigree studies and analysis of the gene for JRD in three other breeds has uncovered another mutation in the same gene that was studied in the Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso breeds. Within the other three breeds alleles A
and B were present, but there were some dogs with JRD that did not have either mutation but still had JRD. This meant
that there appeared to be another mutation either in the current gene, or another gene that participates in the renal dysplasia disease process.
DNA sequencing from these new breeds revealed another mutation in the same gene as the one that has alleles A & B for
Shih Tzu and Lhasas. Upon further investigation, we have also located this mutation in the Shih Tzu and Lhasas. This
new mutation is much stronger and has serious consequences to the gene's ability to function correctly. Because this
mutation appears on the same chromosome(and the same gene) as the mutations that we have been testing for, but was
not picked up earlier in the research, we are re-testing all of the dogs that were submitted in the research study and those
dogs that have been tested for A & B earlier this year.
The high frequency of A and B in Shih Tzu and Lhasas appeared to be the defect we had been looking for with JRD.
However,by researching the other breeds that have entered into the study that also have JRD,it was discovered that
these dogs had a lower frequency of A & B and in fact only one of those breeds had mutation B. It appears that this new
mutation is inherited with the A and B alleles most of the time, and therefore the overall frequency of the disease causing
mutation and the genotype (diagnosis)should not change significantly. However because of the work in all the breeds
we believe that the new mutation is the actual defect. We have developed a screening test for this mutation, and are in the
process of validating this assay. What does this mean to you:
1. All of the animals tested so far will be screened for this mutation at no cost, and the results will be reported to the owners.
2. In the future only a single genetic test will be required for the inherited defect for JRD. From this test, breeding strategies can be determined to eliminate the chromosome with the mutant allele.
3. Those people who have paid for A & B will get a credit of one test to use in the future.
Please allow us a few weeks to re-test and report results to the breeders. Those people waiting for results should get theirs
within four weeks of the test being validated. We appreciate your patience and understanding. We will continue to strive
to do the best research we can for the breeders.
Information on the JRD test can be found at the Dogenes website: www.dogenes.com
