We are blessed to partner with universities as a field instruction site for bachelor’s and master’s
level social work interns. Both the staff and our clients benefit from their presence and they
benefit from the experience. Please read a touching example of the transformation that happens
for all involved:
“My internship experience at Good Sam during the past year has provided valuable lessons
that I know will stay with me as I venture into my career as a professional social worker. Of
course, things like theory, service planning, and implementing interventions are important for
carrying out my day-to-day functions, but it’s the deeper lessons I learned here that are the
most significant. Many of the children in the after-school and Camp Good Sam programs are
the perfect example of resilience and strength in the face of adversity, and I often found myself
wondering what their lives would be like if they had to face those issues without the support
and safety that Good Sam provides them. During a support group session with 9- through
11-year-old boys and girls, the topic of safety came up and there was a general consensus
that this is the place where they feel the most safe (they especially like that staff members use
walkie-talkies to communicate in case anything were to go awry). They called Good Sam their
“second home,” equating it to a mansion where they have rooms to play, sleep, eat, read,
relax, and learn. Hearing the children speak so candidly about their community and the role
that Good Sam plays in their lives made me so grateful that the center exists and that staff

The Good Samaritan Center is, indeed, a “second home” for so many in poverty. Whether
they are a 5th grader in the after-school program, a recently widowed senior, an infant whose
parents have found work, a family battling hunger, a high school dropout pursuing a GED, we
remain a safe place that helps change lives.
