I have always had “big eyes”. I am not referring to the size of my eyes but to my
appetite. The problem is everything interests me. Unfortunately, when I worked
there were many things competing for my time and attention.
If only I had more hours in the day I would take art classes, music lessons,
audit college courses, join book clubs…. The dream that someday I could indulge
myself with all the things that fueled my imagination seemed so far away. Finally,
that long awaited period has arrived. Now that I am retired, I have the opportunity
to explore various hobbies and interests, and I do.
Last year I started taking tap dancing lessons. Practicing my new steps and
dance routines kept me busy and challenged. Several months ago, my teacher
unexpectedly offered students in the class the opportunity to join her jazz dance
program. I had never had the desire to take jazz dancing but I couldn’t resist
this well-loved style of dance. After all, jazz dance is also associated with tap
dance, I reasoned, as I talked myself into another commitment. Besides, it
recently has become extremely popular, presented on television shows, Broadway
productions, movies, music videos and commercials. Most often performed to
jazz, I have enjoyed watching jazz dancers display this fun and energetic type of
dancing. Since it would be good to know, the required effort for me to learn the
unique moves appeared worthwhile.
During my weekly lesson on Tuesday, I struggle to master the fancy footwork,
leaps and quick turns. Who ever thought at this stage of my life I would be
training to perform specific sets of movements developed by choreographers such
as George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jack Cole and Jerome Robbins? These
talented people from the modern and ballet dance worlds excitedly experimented
with the new dance form. They influenced jazz by creating various and wide
ranging dance styles within jazz dance, incorporating elements of ballet and tap
dance. Ballet techniques have become an important part of a dancer’s training.
To do well in jazz dancing it helps to know ballet, as it encourages grace and
balance. Hopefully my one year of ballet training in the fifth grade will kick in.
Syncopated rhythm is a common characteristic in jazz music. It was adapted to
jazz dance and remains important. I am discovering that jazz dancing is jerkier
than I expected and that it has a strict relationship with the music. The connection
between movement and music is direct, and the former is typically dependent on
the latter. My dance instructor keeps reminding us, “Listen to the music and it
will tell you what to do. You will naturally go into your next move.” I have to
confess that memorizing the steps is the only method that works for me.
Jazz dancing is both visual and auditory. Since it is not a social dance but a
theater dance, intended for theater-based performance in front of an audience,
my teacher Adele is preparing to take our show on the road. She optimistically
considers us trained dancers as she readies us for public exposure. Wow, what
have I gotten myself into? Who knew I was starting a new career? Hopefully I
won’t have to learn to do the difficult hunched-over posture and inverted limb
movements made famous by Bob Fosse.
Now that I am busier than ever, I don’t understand how I used to live my life,
getting things done while being employed. Retirees can understand and relate to
this wonderful dilemma. From a positive standpoint, I have an exciting chance to
explore my capabilities, as I keep healthy doing this invigorating form of exercise.
It is also using up plenty of calories. With a lot of practice, an old gal can learn
new tricks. I mean rhythms and movement patterns.

VILLAGES AT MT. SINAI | july/august 2016 3
ast year Dolores and I went to Guanacaste to visit resorts with
my son James and his wife Sara. Since Sara was born in Costa
Rica, that visit – our first to Costa Rica – gave us the opportunity
to meet her parents (Sara and Leandro) and two sisters, and to
explore the Western part of this beautiful country together. At the
time, the kids were planning a wedding for February 2016 in Costa
Rica; a reception was to be held in one of these resorts. Well, that
wedding and reception took place – it was fantastic!
On Tuesday February 9, Dolores and I flew into Juan
Santamaria International Airport, about 14 miles from San Jose,
the capital city of Costa Rica. We stayed in the city center, in the
Balmoral hotel. The hotel is located on Central Avenue (Avenida
Central), a “walk only” street containing historical buildings,
museums, parks, theaters, and lots of shopping. Two of these
theaters, “National Theater of Costa Rica” (Teatro Nacional de
Costa Rica) and “Melico Salazar Theater” (Teatro Popular Melico
Salazar) present drama, dance performances, and concerts
throughout the year. During off performance time, these buildings
are open to tourists, so we did get to see these impressive buildings
along our self-guided walking tours.
San Jose is a typical central city, bustling with people during
the day, including lots of heavy traffic. In the evening, however,
most people escape to the suburbs. In fact the central city’s
population is only about 300,000 while the Greater Metropolitan
Area of San Jose, which surrounds the central city, has about 2.2
million people. This is about 35% of the country’s total population,
in an area just about 4% of the country.
San Jose is in the Tropics and is in a tropical rainforest;
however its elevation (~ 3,800 feet) gives it a mild climate. Its
average temperature is between 70 degrees and 74 degrees year
round. During the dry season, from December to April, rainfall
averages less than an inch per month. But during the rest of the
year, this average rises to about 10 inches per month. Thank
goodness we visited the city in February! Unfortunately, during
this dry season, a constant, very strong wind blows through much
of San Jose. This makes a temperature in the 70s feel much colder.
Warm clothing is highly recommended.
On Thursday evening, Sara’s parents had a gathering in their
home located about 10 miles north of the central city. Here we got
to meet our daughter-in-law Sara’s extended family who lives not
only in Costa Rica but in Nicaragua and Miami as well. (In fact,
Sara’s dad told us that the entire family – on both sides – originated
in Nicaragua. Many of them left that country because they did not
want to live under Sandinista control. Costa Rica is a peaceful,
democratic country while Nicaragua is not.) There were about
40 people at the gathering and Sara’s mom cooked Costa Rican
lasagna for all of us. It was delicious, and not like anything I’ve
tasted before. Together with wine, Costa Rican coffee, pastries and
cake, we were really well fed.
The highlight of the evening occurred when Leandro’s father
– a man of 92 – arrived from Nicaragua and was introduced to

us. In fact, much of the family hadn’t seen him in about 8 years
so his arrival was sweet. Our son James, who had never met Sara’s
grandfather, spent about 15 minutes in conversation with him –
in Spanish. I have attached a picture of that conversation, it was
poignant!
On Friday we took a tour to POAS Volcano National Park
and the DOKA Estate Coffee Farm. The POAS Volcano (one of
many in Costa Rica) is north of the city, about an hour and half ’s
drive from our hotel. It is about 9,000 feet above sea level and is
situated within a densely vegetated, forested area. I have attached
a picture of what the volcano looks like under clear weather
conditions. Its crater is about 1 mile across and is filled with rain
water. Unfortunately, it was rainy and foggy when we arrived in
the park, so we could not see this magnificent natural beauty. This
is an active volcano having erupted at least once a year between
2010 and 2014. These eruptions occur when water seeps into the

crater’s cracks, boils to steam, and explodes. This steam explosion
carries magna and ash hundreds of feet into the air before slowly
settling back down into the crater. Too bad we didn’t see anything
like this; in fact the fog prevented us from even seeing the crater as
shown. (Maybe next time!)
From the volcano, the tour took us to the coffee farm where
coffee trees are planted and beans (berries) are picked. These
berries are sorted, processed, and roasted to produce various
qualities of coffee for sale. (The larger berries produce the best
coffee; a rather extensive sorting process at DOKA separates
berries by size.) During the tour we were shown berries of various
sizes, including the tray of “large” coffee berries shown.
Our guide explained the various processes used to decaffeinate
coffee. These include:
Immersing green berries in liquid carbon dioxide under
pressure. Carbon dioxide will dissipate as a gas when the berries
are returned to normal pressure leaving a 97% caffeine free coffee.
Soaking green berries in methylene chloride liquid. After
soaking is completed, the caffeine laden liquid is drained away and
the berries are steamed to evaporate any remaining solvent.
None of the processes produce coffee unsafe for the consumer,
as the berry roasting process which follows decaffeination burnsoff any remaining solvent or carbon dioxide. (In fact dark-roast
coffee actually contains less caffeine than light-roast coffee because
dark-roast is roasted longer than light-roast.) In addition, hot
water used by the consumer to brew coffee further removes any
residuals. Our guide explained that DOKA ships green coffee
berries to Canada for decaffeination, as this process is not done at
DOKA. Canada ships the decaffeinated berries back to Costa Rica
and keeps the caffeine for its own use.
On Saturday, at about 2 PM, the Roman Catholic religious
marriage ceremony began in a church in San Jose. The ceremony
was similar to those held in the U.S. and just as beautiful. There
was only one significant difference in the ceremony – besides
the language difference. In addition to the exchange of rings,
Sara and James exchanged coins. These were provided by Sara’s
family and symbolize a sharing of the couple’s material possessions
during their lifetime. After the ceremony ended at about 3 PM,
lots of confetti was thrown, many pictures were taken, and then
we walked across the street to a reception hall. Of course, the
reception had lots of great food, many speeches, more pictures
and video, cake cutting, and dancing, dancing, dancing. All of this
was followed by two men on stilts in mardi-gras garb that got on
the dance floor and performed for about 2 hours. See a picture of
these men dancing with the guests.
On Sunday, we recuperated from Saturday’s festivities, with
a pool party at Sara’s parents house. Food was catered and drinks
were plentiful! About 20 people were there, some from both
families. We had a great time; our families just getting along
fantastically!
On Monday, eight people (Gallegro family members and
some of James’ friends) took a van to the resort area of Costa Rica,
to Guanacaste on the country’s west coast. The drive took about 5
½ hours and took us to the all-inclusive Weston resort. This resort
offers 406 guest rooms configured in a “cottage format,” an infinity
pool with a swim-up bar, eight great restaurants, and a beautiful
white sand beach. We spent 7 days at the resort and really enjoyed
the food, swimming pool, and the mid 90 degree temperatures.
In addition, we enjoyed sharing the resort with coatis, iguanas,
and howler monkeys. Since resorts in Guanacaste have no animal
barriers, and are built into the ecological landscape, coatis and
iguanas walk around the resort and are completely oblivious to
humans. It was not uncommon for a person to be laying on a chaise
lounge next to the pool only to have an iguana sleep underneath
that lounge. When humans are eating, however, these animals
will approach and beg for food. The animals are not a threat to
humans; in fact they will eat out of your hand if you feed them.
People are cautioned not to feed the animals, but this feeding does
take place.
On Friday, another reception was held for James and Sara; this
time at the resort’s outdoor party area. It was a terrific event in
the very mild evening temperatures. Since one of Sara’s sisters is
a professional dancer – she dances in the Costa Rican version of
“Dancing with the Stars” – she and her partners put on a show for
us. It was sensational, and I began to imagine that these young
dancers didn’t have any bones. Their limbs must be connected
with rubber bands!
The following Tuesday we left Costa Rica. We can’t wait to go
back to visit our new family and continue to explore this beautiful
country!

Holding a Chinese Auction is a lot of work, but it was worth the effort. Everyone had fun and the Social Committee was able
to gather funds so that we can purchase gifts and continue to hold free functions for our community and our grandchildren
such as our fantastic Halloween Party and Pictures with Santa.
Below is a list of the merchants who were very generous to our community. We ask that you try to patronize them and tell
them you are from The Villages and appreciate their donation.

On June 8th the Social Committee held its second Chinese Auction. This one was bigger and better than the one we had
three years ago. We had 106 gifts, 12 super gifts, and 30 gift cards. All were donated by our residents and local merchants.
The many residents who attended had the opportunity to purchase raffles and try to win the gifts of their choice.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA
CENTRAL A/C
Submitted by Shelly Somerstein

Fourth of July trivia facts.
While most Americans know that that the U.S.’ birthday is celebrated on July 4, it’s a misconception
that all the signers of the Declaration of Independence signed it on the Fourth of July.
1. How many people signed the Declaration of
Independence on July Fourth? Two
2. On what day did most signers of the Declaration
of Independence actually sign the document?
Aug. 2, 1776
3. Which three presidents died on the Fourth of
July?
They were three of the first five presidents: John
Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. The
second president, Adams, and the third, Jefferson,
both died in 1826, the 50th anniversary.
4. Most of the Founding Fathers agreed that July
Fourth is the correct day to celebrate America’s
Independence from Great Britain—except one.
Who is it and why?
Adams thought July 2, the day the Second
Continental Congress voted in Philadelphia to
declare independence from Britain, would be the
day patriots celebrated. “The second day of July
1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the
history of America. It ought to be solemnized with
Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns,
Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one end of
this continent to the other from this time forward
forever more.”
1777. Congress chose fireworks as a way to
celebrate the first anniversary. They were ignited
over Philadelphia.
9. America isn’t the only nation that celebrates the
Fourth of July. Which other countries do, and
why?
It might sound odd, but if you celebrate the Fourth
of July outside the U.S., you still might see fireworks
in Denmark, England, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.
This is because thousands of people emigrated
to the U.S. in the early 1900s. Some European
celebrations take place near tourist destinationsto attract U.S. travelers or near American military
bases.
10. How many people lived in the United States
when the Declaration was signed?
2.5 million.
11. What baseball player threw a 4-0 no hitter
against the Boston Red Sox on July 4, 1983?
New York Yankee pitcher, Dave Righetti. It was the
first no hitter in 27 years.
12. Which country gained independence from the
United States on July Fourth?
The Philippines did in 1946.
5. When did the Fourth of July become a legal
federal holiday?
1870. Then in 1938, Congress reaffirmed the holiday
to make sure all workers received full pay.
6. Which president was born on July 4th?
It was Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, in 1872.
7. Is there something written on the back of the
Declaration of Independence?
Yes! It’s said the following is written upside
down and backwards: ”Original Declaration of
Independence dated 4th July 1776.” It is not known
who wrote it or why.
8. When were fireworks first used to celebrate July
Fourth?

Picnics, barbeques, cold drinks and fireworks: These are
just some of the staples of the Fourth of July. But without America’s Founding Fathers- George
Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton
and James Monroe- there wouldn’t be an Independence Day to celebrate.

Meet Your Neighbors: Barbara and Bruce Botway
Barbara and Bruce Botway are relatively
new members of our Park community,
having moved from their family home in
Plainview (52 years!) into their Claremont
model home on Louden Loop in 2013. I
had a very enjoyable visit with them in their
beautiful and comfortable home, gathering
lots of interesting information about their
lives for this column.
Barbara was born and raised in
Brooklyn where she attended all-girls
Prospect Heights H.S. Bruce was also born
in Brooklyn but he grew up in Laurelton
where he attended Andrew Jackson H.S.,
a classmate of basketball great Bob Cousy.
Barbara and Bruce met shortly after
Bruce’s military service in 1953. Both
were accomplished ice skaters; Barbara in
ice dancing and Bruce in speed skating.
Bruce made it as far as the TV-aired finals
at Madison Square Garden in 1950, when
Ed Sullivan was the master of ceremonies.
Bruce claims that it was his “15 minutes of
fame”! Understandably, the recent Olympic
speed-skating champion, Apolo Ohno, is
Bruce’s hero.
In addition to ice dancing, Barbara
also designed beautiful ladies’ costumes
for some figure-skating events and, to this
day, enjoys sewing and embroidering as a
hobby, along with playing the piano in their
loft. She attended the Fashion Institute of
Technology (F.I.T.) and later graduated from
SUNY Farmingdale with a degree in Dental
Hygiene. After graduation, she worked
primarily in the field of periodontics.
Bruce graduated from Pratt Institute
just prior to being drafted during the Korean
War, spending time in a tank battalion
as well as teaching combat intelligence
at an NCO (non-commissioned officer)
academy in Germany. He spent most of
his professional career in the Plumbing and
Heating industry, as a salesman, marketing
director and Vice President.
The Botways’ daughter Nancy is a
professional dog groomer and certified
veterinary technician. Their son Robert
is a master craftsman and licensed general
contractor specializing in kitchen and
bath renovations, designing entertainment
centers and building home expansions. His
expertise has included major work, not only
at the Botways (beautiful!) but throughout
Long Island, including various homes in
The Park. Their youngest daughter Sue
is a licensed massage therapist who is also
certified in reflexology.
The Botways have seven very active
grandchildren, six girls and one boy.
Nicole, recently married at the Riverhead
Aquarium, is an MIT graduate (now a
doctor in microbiology). Natasha is a
paramedic in Louisiana and the proud
owner of retired race horse Seattle Slew’s
descendent “Rustown Hero.” Shannon is
an accomplished High School dance team
national champion plus a recently-certified
lifeguard. Tara is a movie film producer.
Kristen (like her grandfather) is a Pratt
Institute graduate who designs commercial
kitchens. Amanda is a project manager
for a prominent construction company
in Portland, Oregon.
Stephen, their
only grandson, is majoring in business/

There’s one more member of the Botway
family living on Louden Loop. Many of the
neighbors know him as Spike. He turned 24
years old on Flag Day but no driver’s license
because he can’t reach the steering wheel!
Spike is very demanding and can squawk
loud enough to get attention for food, a
manicure, water and just about everything
else a parrot thinks he needs. When he says
“nighty night” you better bring him up to
his night cage in the loft; otherwise Barbara
and Bruce would have no peace to watch
TV. Spike will say “goodbye” as clear as a
bell when the Botways put on their hats and
coats. Yes, Spike completes the menagerie,
ensuring “never a dull moment” at their
Louden Loop abode!
Both Barbara and Bruce love music
and, after having to give up the ghost of
playing golf, Bruce now plays the guitar in
their music room in-between taking weekly
professional lessons. In addition to playing
the piano, which she enjoyed during her
formative years, Barbara also works on a
very impressive doll house with collections
of quality miniatures, a labor of love which
never gets boring.
One of the Botways’ long-standing
and unique hobbies in the 1990s was that
they were both very active members of

the Freeport police department. At that time, Bruce did his own
gunsmithing and he had three machines for reloading ammunition
in many different calibers. They competed with various clubs all
over Long Island. Barbara became team captain and a crack shot,
helping their teams beat many competitors. They were both highly
trained and proficient, and they gained many wonderful friends in
the sport. Their large group, which included police officers as well
as civilians, never had any incidents that warranted arrests or loss of
firearms; they were the “good guys”!
Barbara and Bruce have enjoyed a great deal of traveling during
their many years together. Some favorite destinations have included
Puerto Rico; England and Ireland; France, Spain and Portugal;
Norway and Sweden; and Algeria. After 62 years of marriage
and still counting, they feel that their move to The Villages, with
the many new friends they have made, has added a valuable vigor
and enjoyment to their lives which they consider priceless. How
wonderful it is for our community that we have such interesting and
dynamic neighbors as the Botways!

THE WAY I SEE IT by Bruce Botway
Music & Arts
About 2 years ago, when I searched Google
to locate a place to take guitar lessons, I was
pleasantly surprised to find Music & Arts,
which happens to be about 5 minutes from our
community at The Park. They are on route 347
just east of the King Kullen shopping center
and next to a small shopping strip.
Anyone who plays a musical instrument
or wants to learn how to play one by taking
professional lessons, Music & Arts would not
disappoint you! Actually, they also sell just
about every kind of instrument, including
piano, horn & string, etc. for both novice and
pro.
Their ‘school’ rooms can accommodate
many students at the same time and they do
teach children as well as adults. Using my guitar
teacher (Gerry McKeveny) as an example,
each Music & Arts instructor’s overall caliber
is outstanding. Hence their popularity.
14 villages at mt. sinai | july/august 2016
In my case, getting lesson time with
Gerry’s very active schedule can be challenging
(even with him being on site Tuesdays and
Wednesdays). Beyond that, Gerry tours
nationally in the entertainment business; so he
is one busy guitarist.
The minute you step through the door
at Music & Arts, you are greeted by a very
pleasant,
knowledgeable
management
team that not only sells product but repairs
instruments on location and stands ready
with liberal, free guidance on most questions
related to music.
Recently, I purchased a high end Yamaha
digital piano from Music & Arts and they not
only delivered it, but carried it up to our loft
and assembled it. Their customer service really
is impressive and their prices are competitive.
Their telephone # is 631-928-8400. The
store manager’s name is Vincent Palmeri.

TURN YOUR DECK INTO A
Sugar Loaf, New York
YEAR ROUND SUNROOM!
Richard and I enjoy taking car trips
discovering New York State. There are so
many wonderful towns and areas filled
with beauty and charm. This Memorial
Day Weekend we headed to Sugar Loaf
for its Spring Festival. Yes, there is
actually a place called Sugar Loaf, New
York! It is a small hamlet nestled in the
lovely Hudson Valley. This art and craft
village, known for independent artists
and shop keepers, is a delightful and fun
place to explore.
What occurs when a town of artists
put on a festival is very special. There
was live music by extremely talented
musicians, delicious ethnic food choices
and unique quality items handcrafted by
over 55 local artisans. Vendors discussed
their work and held demonstrations in
the appealing shops and booths.
I especially relished the relaxed,
laid-back atmosphere and friendliness
of the people we encountered. We
were told that this place of trendy
boutiques is the long standing home to
resident artists who not only produce
remarkable works but want you to
linger in their studios. We felt more like
family members than guests when we
took a walking tour of resident artists’
houses and shops. Spending so much
time outdoors in the fresh mountain air
gave us an appetite, which was satisfied
by scrumptious Polish food.
The internationally recognized
photographer Nick Zungoli was available
for conversation and explanation at his
impressive Exposures Gallery. Amassed
before us was his astounding body of
work, including stunning images of
the local Hudson Valley and from his
extensive travels. Next door we visited
the residence/studio of woodcarver
Clay Boone. On display was his hand
carved Carousel Horse. We admired the
gorgeous jewelry by Rachel Bertoni who
is acknowledged as a top trend designer,
sought after by celebrities. One of the
most strikingly decorated businesses
was that of candle maker Peter Lendved.
Rich and I marveled at the colorful lines
of hand dipped candles hanging in
rows from the ceiling. My favorite visit
was to Bliss Women’s Art Cooperative,
a delightful store filled with a diverse
selection of hand done products.
Our mini vacation allowed us to
experience the passion for excellence
and integrity shown by these highly
dedicated artists. We headed home with
a trunk full of goodies to add to our
Mt Sinai shelves. As we drove home to
beautiful Long Island, we got another
chance to admire the scenic view, the
rich farmlands, mountains, streams and
lakes of a different part of New York.
What a remarkable state we live in!

Glorious Grandchildren
Air Conditioning
& Heating
Anyone who knows me realizes that my three grandkids are very
special to me. I consider them my most wonderful blessings at
this stage in my life. I know that the Lynam, Sciacca, Callahan and
McDonald families share in my point of view.
Peggy and Tom Lynam recently celebrated the baptism
of their third grandchild, Brady Thomas Lynam, on April 17th.
Brady's parents, Angela and Christopher, decided to live and raise
their family where Chris grew up in Sayville. St. Lawrence is the
same church where Chris was baptized and received his sacraments
and where he and Angela were married. Brady's godparents
are Chris' brother, Michael Lynam, and Angela's sister, Carolyn
Rotsch. A luncheon was held after the ceremony at Maxwell's in
Islip. All family members were in attendance to share in this very
joyous occasion. What a beautiful baby boy! The Lynam clan is
growing in a very special and blessed way. Congratulations to all!
Phyllis and Walter McDonald's family has now
grown to eight grandchildren. Matthew James Foulke, son of the
McDonalds' daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Michael, was
baptized on May 22nd at St. Ignatious in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
Matthew is shown here with his Mom and Dad, and Godparents,
Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Robert Bjorklund. Uncle Brian Foulke
is there as well. Grandma and Grandpa were more than happy
to share in a Kodak moment to commemorate the day. Matthew
shares his home with his three big brothers, Andrew, 7, Jason,
5, and Jack, 3. I know that the McDonalds count their special
blessings times eight!. Congratulations to all as well.
Barbara and John Sciacca celebrated the First Holy
Communion of their oldest granddaughter, Julianna Sciacca, on
April 30th at St. Leo The Great Church in Lincroft, New Jersey.
All of the children were well prepared and the ceremony and
mass were inspiring. The girls looked beautiful in their white
dresses and veils and the boys so handsome in their suits. After
the ceremony a luncheon was held at the Molly Pitcher Inn where
the food was delicious and plentiful. Everyone enjoyed this very
special day. The Sciaccas feel truly blessed as you can see from the
smiles and love they have for Julianna.
Florence and Doug Callahan also celebrated the
First Holy Communion of their youngest grandchild, Lila Grace
Callahan, on May 15th at St. Louis De Montfort Church. Lila looks
so beautiful and her brother, Dylan, so handsome. Lila's parents,
Steven and Melissa, look so happy and proud of Lila. All four
grandchildren of the Callhans received their First Communion at
St. Louis De Montfort Church. The Callahans appreciate this very
special blessing as well.
Knowing these families as I do, I was so happy to share their
blessings with all of you. Being able to share the love and joy we
have for our grandchildren with the community is truly a very
special blessing.
Please continue to share your glorious grandchildren with our
community.

Ducks Beware!
A Day In The Park
Has anyone noticed the new addition to our outdoor pool?
Apparently, he can be either naughty or nice! A couple of
our residents decided to attempt to make friends...one was
successful, the other not so much! Let's hope our feathered
friends find him more naughty than nice!
It was sunny and bright one day in Spring,
By Phyllis McDonald
So we went to the park to laugh and sing.
On the lake we watched a sailboat race,
And saw a big, shaggy dog with mud on his face.
We fed the ducks our stale, old bread,
And wondered where the stone path led.
A playground is what we happily found,
And joyful laughter was the only sound.
A girl on the slide was way up high,
And a boy on roller skates whizzed right by.
We heard the teeter totter squeak as it went up and down,
And watched as the carousel went round and round.
On the baseball field, a boy ran the bases,
And another boy stopped to tie his shoelaces.
The big, shaggy dog with mud on his face
Saw the red sailboat win the race.
As we walked and talked all around the lake,
The sun was setting; it was getting late.
So, we left the park to the duck’s “quack, quack,”
And they seemed to be saying,
“Hurry on back!”

Buck Knife Co. When playing poker it was common to place
one of these Buck knives in front of the dealer so everyone
knew who he was. When it was time for a new dealer, the
deck of cards and the knife were given to the new dealer. If
he didn’t want to deal he would “pass the buck” to the next
player. If that player accepted, the “the buck stopped there.”
THE WHOLE NINE YARDS
American fighter planes in WW2 had machine guns that
were fed by a belt of cartridges. The average plane held belts
that were 27 feet (9 yards) long. If the pilot used up all his
ammo he was said to have given it the “whole nine yards.”
BARGE IN
Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi in large
barges pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control
and would sometimes swing into piers or other boats. People
would say they “barged in.”
BUYING THE FARM
This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were
given life insurance policies worth $5000. This was about
the price of an average farm, so if you died you “bought the
farm” for your survivors.
OVER A BARREL
In the days before CPR, a drowning
victim would be placed face down
over a barrel and the barrel would
be rolled back and forth in an effort
to empty the lungs of water. It was
rarely effective. If you were “over a
barrel” you were in deep trouble.
IRON CLAD CONTRACT
This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It
meant something so strong that it could not be broken.

The Old English word for spider was “cob.”

The Park Book Club Submitted by Anita Laurine
At our book club meeting on May 18th, we discussed “A Paris Apartment,” by Michelle Gable. The
book is based on an actual event that occurred in 2010: the contents of a Paris apartment that had been
sealed for seventy years were going to be auctioned. The apartment of courtesan Marthe de Florian,
an illegitimate daughter of Victor Hugo, overflowed with treasures from the Belle Epoque. The stash
included high end furniture and an unknown painting of her by the most renowned portraitist of the
19th Century, which eventually sold for over two million euros at auction.
The fictionalized account of her life is interwoven with the story of Sotheby’s furniture expert, April,
who decamps to Paris to uncover the mysteries of a shuttered-for-seventy-years apartment, as well as
to escape the problems in her personal life. Through Marthe’s diaries the book explores the rich life,
locales and activities of Paris during the gilded age and reveals heartbreak, torment and decadence as
well.
I found this book to be a stylish and sophisticated account of complex relationships, romance and history.
The selection for the July book club is “Come Home,” by Lisa Scotoline, All
residents are invited to our meeting on July 20th at 7:30 P.M. at the clubhouse.

A SHOT OF WHISKEY
In the old west a .45 cartridge
for a six gun cost 12 cents,
so did a glass of whiskey. If
a cowhand was low on cash
he would often give the

For the first time ever, Mother Nature did not cooperate
with us on Memorial Day. The weather was threatening
and we had to hold our annual barbeque indoors this year.
It might have looked like rain outside, but our spirits were
not dampened at all.
Luckily our caterer was still able to barbeque and we enjoyed all the usual treats that we have been used to. The
chicken, pulled pork, and the sausage and peppers were
scrumptious. Of course, it wouldn't be Memorial Day
without the traditional hot dog with all the fixings. As always, the selection of desserts was great.
We had to forego our egg toss game, but instead we had a
"Park" Bingo and a Ball Toss game which were lots of fun.
Thank you to all the residents who helped set up and clean
up the clubhouse. It was a great way to begin our season
of social activities here at The Park.
