From the President’s Perspective
As I look back on this year, I find
myself grinning. It was such a
pleasure representing the Newport
Mesa Chapter as this years’
President. I was so fortunate to
have such an awesome board of
directors, the GLADs guiding our
young men, chairs and committee
members. Everyone worked
together as a team and we pulled
off some amazing experiences.
Serving
Our Community
Our mother members and young
men had the opportunity to affect
many lives this year. The young men hosted a game booth at the
Buddy Walk held at the Anaheim Stadium. Again the young men served
food at the mobile pantry. A young man favorite was assembling and
delivering the Meet the Needs boxes at local Newport Mesa elementary
schools. Lastly, a unit at Human Options was transformed by the
young men. They removed the furniture, cleaned all of the surfaces,
painted the walls and then put everything all back together after
a generous donor replaced the carpet. Of course each grade level
planned and attended several events throughout the year as well.
Our members were so generous and really stepped up and supported
our fund raising endeavors. The GRIT Cycle mother-son event was
a huge success and tons of fun. Also the young men really enjoyed
the dodge ball calcutta at Sky High. Who wouldn’t love throwing
rubber balls at their peers?
Our chapter held a successful membership drive inviting twenty-two
provisional members to join Newport Mesa. The Class of 2019 is
thirty members strong!!!
The chairs and their committee members were successful coordinating
and hosting the “We Love Our Sustainers” event, Junior Etiquette
Dinner, Senior Send Off and of course the annual Compass Dinner
where we were able to celebrate our young men’s accomplishments
throughout the year.
I thank you all for this wonderful opportunity and for all that you
have done.
Respectfully,
Buffi Hendrix

Classes Of 2014-2015
Grade level highlights from the class president’s inspiring speeches at this year’s Compass Dinner
Senior Class
By William Davenport
As the senior class, this year was both our final year at NYLM, and arguably
our best year. We enjoyed many activities together, and through these we
bonded as a very tight knit group. We all learned to much further appreciate
all of the opportunities and experiences NLYM has provided us with and
also everyone
who helped to
make NLYM the
experience that
it is.
Highlights for
the year include
a panel of our
dads who did
question and
answer for many
of our curiosities.
Questions
ranged from
career advice,
questions
about college,
personal and
family life advice,
and general life
advice. We all learned much and were very happy with the meeting.
Thanks to all of our dads who participated. Also, a former navy SEAL
and current hedge fund manager, Mark Beder, came to talk to us
about his experiences as a SEAL and the lesson’s he learned from
these experiences. We are very appreciative of attorney Kate Corrigan
who has spoken at our meetings every year. This year she focused on
our responsibilities and potential pitfalls when becoming legal adults.
As far as our philanthropy events, my personal favorite and I believe
the favorite of our class was the High Hopes bowling event. We bowled
with accident
victims and
each of us was
able to spend
a considerable
amount of time
with one or two
of the victims
and learn of their
stories. We both
bonded with
these individuals
and also realized
h ow q u i c k l y
one event can
change your
life in such a
dramatic way.
We also did our
annual Meet the
Needs boxes delivery with the other NLYM classes and played Bingo
at the Crown Grove senior center.
Our class earned a total of 519 direct community service hours this
year. I’m sure that our great experiences will result in future philanthropy
by all of us in the next steps of our lives.
Junior Class
By Cooper Hendrix
On behalf of the Class of 2016, I would like to take a moment to say
thank you to all of the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make
NLYM a success. I would especially like to thank our Advisors, Mrs.
Bass and Mrs. Alessi, for all of their guidance and support.
As I think back over the past year I am amazed at all of the fun that
we have had and all that we have accomplished in such a short
period of time. This is our third year in the program and every year
our class grows closer and closer.
Like the other classes, ours focused on the four National League of
Young Men prongs of Culture, Service, Protocol, and Leadership. For
our Cultural event we attended the musical The History of Rock and
Roll. As the title indicates, the show covered Rock and Roll music
from the 1950s thru current times. It was a lot of fun and had some
pretty good music as well.
For our Service Project we accomplished so much this year. We
had 6 different events that ranged from repainting the Light House
Ministry to planting a garden in the Shalimar Learning Center. We
wrapped and distributed presents to Someone Cares Soup Kitchen,
re-carpeted and repainted the Human Options Center, as well as
compiled and distributed our annual Meet the Need Boxes. I am very
proud to announce that our class worked 1,294 direct community
service hours this year.
Meeting when Jake Olsen shared his life story and spoke to us
about not giving up on our dreams. It is a message that has stuck
with each of us.
At this years protocol events we learned how to dress for success,
received some dating advice from one of our classmates’ father
and learned how to effectively communicate in social situations all
of which came in handy during our Etiquette Dinner with the young
ladies of NCL. The most touching event was during our Father-Son
It was been a unique privilege to serve our class as President and
one that I will never forget. I would like to thank my classmates for
an amazing year and for their constant enthusiasm and ever-positive
attitude. We only have one year left and let’s make the last one the
best one.

Classes Of 2014-2015
Grade level highlights from the class president’s inspiring speeches at this year’s Compass Dinner
Sophomore Class
By Jaden Duncan
The Class of 2017 had a great 2014 and 2015 year.
We participated in many fun activities while helping
the community around us. During our cultural
event at the NAC, we learned how to stand up
paddleboard, which was a great opportunity to
get to know one another and have a good time
as well. We spent a lot of time knocking each
other off the boards, which was a blast.
For our fall and spring philanthropies, we went to
the Crossing Church and we made and served
breakfast to the homeless. Participating in this
experience really gave us a great perspective
on the lives of others.
A few weeks before Christmas, our GLADs
planned a Holiday Party where we had a white
elephant gift exchange. Everyone had a blast
participating in it because everyone brought the
weirdest stuff.
We had a dating and cell phone etiquette speaker.
She taught us all of the little things necessary to show ourselves as
very respectable men while on a date, such as opening the door
for the girl. She was very clear that we should never be texting a
girl after 9 pm, which was a real eye-opener. The last thing, she
explained what was appropriate and not appropriate to be posting
on social media
Overall, this year has been great for the class of 2017. In everything
we did, our GLADs added ways to get us young men closer together
and, we had fun doing it all together. Thank you Mrs. Donald and
Mrs. Del Valle.
I cannot wait to see how next year goes.
Freshman Class
By Jack Pitchess
The Class of 2018 would
like to thank our GLADs,
Mrs. McKasson and Mrs.
Shannon for helping make
our first year in NLYM a
success. They really made
our meetings fun and also
productive. In September,
when the class gathered
for our first meeting, we
realized
that many of us already
knew each other from
previous sport teams
or schools. Due to this,
our class bonded quickly
and we had a lot of fun
participating in NLYM
events. The first half of
our year we ran the game
booths at the ENC fall festival, made meet the need boxes, and had
guest speakers about etiquette, drug use, and social media. During
the second half of the year we had our cultural event at the Lyon
Air Museum, did a SOS stuff a sock event with the NCL class of
2018, and had a guest speaker on auto mechanics. Most of us also
participated in the all- league spring philanthropy event where we
helped renovate an apartment at Second Step, a Human Options
shelter. And lastly, our class had a great turn- out for the all- league
dodge ball tournament which was a fund raiser for NLYM.
The class of 2018 had a very successful year and we look forward
to the next three years.

The Compass Dinner
The young men of NLYM and their
families gathered for our 9th annual
year end event, now called the
Compass Dinner, held on May 17th
at the lovely Balboa Yacht Club. The
evening program celebrated the
volunteer efforts of the NLYM young
men who together achieved over
4,600 hours of community service
for 2014-2015. Austin Cottrell the
recipient of the Anchor Award for
the most philanthropy hours served
during the year, spoke about his
volunteer experiences. John Connelly
was the recipient of the of the Senior
Service Award, he spoke about
his 4 memorable years in NLYM.
Next and somewhat of a surprise,
was J.B. Lee, skyped in from The
Navel Academy and presented the
Helmsman Awards, a newer award to
our chapter. Voted on by each grade
level man and their advisors, this award
recognizes one young man in each
grade who demonstrates the true
qualities of leadership. These young
men have shown a healthy balance of
philanthropy, leadership and protocol
activities throughout the year. All of
our amazing GLADS were thanked
by the grade level young men. The
Seniors were recognized by past
President Angie Evans who posed
some very humorous questions to
the group. In addition, each Senior
gave a rose to their mom in thanks
for the last four years. Next, the
seniors preformed a song and dance
expressing their fondness for their
years with NLYM. Many thanks to
Gabriella Duncan and her amazing
committee for coordinating such a
fabulous and memorable evening!

Our Year
of
Protocol
and
Culture
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” Aristotle
This past year, NLYM-Newport Chapter presented our Young Men with
numerous opportunities to finesse their protocol skills and expand their
cultural horizons. These skills will help them develop a comfort level in a
variety of situations, and allow them to make their best impressions now
and in the future.
At every grade level meeting, all Young Men were
properly greeted with handshakes by Protocol Moms
and Protocol Chair, aka, the “Pro Team”! During each
grade level meeting, the Pro Team conducted a 1015 minute interactive Protocol activity, complete with
handouts, charts, props, or speakers, as needed. These
presentations incorporated 4 Protocol themes: ( 1 ) Proper
Greetings & Handshakes/Cell Phone & Social Media
Etiquette, ( 2 ) The Big Picture-Making Good Choices
and/or Interviewer/Recruiter/College Counselor, ( 3 )
Semi-Formal Dress & Ties, and ( 4 ) Thank You Notes.
These broad themes allowed upper grades to plan more
advanced lessons, building upon prior years’ lessons
to progressively reinforce the concepts in a relevant,
non-repetitive way. Pro Teams planned terrific lessons including: a Navy
Seal who spoke on determination & focus, college advisors who focused
on the best way to approach college applications, essays, and athletic
recruiting, plus various speakers who shared tips on dating etiquette, dining
manners, effective communicating, dressing for any occasion, and how

to write sincere thank you notes. In addition to these important meeting
presentations to the Young Men, all Patronesses received 19 Protocol Tips
articles in the chapter bulletins, on topics like communicating respectfully,
being a good sport, courteous driving, & how to respectfully support a
friend who is struggling. NLYM’s traditional 11th grade Etiquette Dinner
with the 11th grade Young Women of National Charity
League was a wonderful way for these young adults to
practice their social and dining skills in a semi-guided
and safe environment.
Cultural events were included in the curriculum for
each grade level to broaden the cultural perspectives
of our Young Men. Entertaining events such as “The
Beat Goes On” musical revue, and touring the Lyon
Air Museum, promoted education of the arts, including
literature, music, art, and theater.
NLYM is truly unique among other groups due to its
focus on the 4 pillars of Leadership, Service, Culture, and
Protocol. As our Young Men mature, it is so beneficial
for them to appreciate new cultural experiences, and
to treat others and themselves with dignity. In a challenging world, NLYM
promotes integrity, respect and excellence.

About Us . . .
Facts:
National League of Young Men, Newport Mesa, is the founding
chapter of an organization first known as Beach City Service
League (BCSL), founded in January 2007 by Newport Beach
Residents Diane Edmonson and Mary Pat Lucas. BCSL’s
first year consisted of two classes of 43 young men and their
mothers, and has grown to include four classes of young men
in grades 9 through 12, a total of over 250 members. With a
second chapter operating in Orange, CA, and the desire to
expand further, in September of 2011 we voted to change our
name to the National League of Young Men.
The NLYM, Newport Mesa members
have volunteered over 29,000 ours
since founding the organization in
January, 2007.
Our members have volunteered for causes ranging from
Special Olympics, The American Cancer Society, Second
Harvest Food Bank, High Hopes and the U.S. Army to local
soup kitchens, fire stations, senior centers, and youth groups.
Young men also attend meetings, during which they learn
important life skills such as time management, leadership,
relationship building and protocol. They hold positions on
their board of directors each year and learn valuable skills in
communications, team building and follow-through. At the
end of four years, our Young Men members are well-rounded
individuals who have developed leadership skills, distinctive
manners and compassion for their community.
This year our young men have served
4,742 hours at local Orange County
charities, and throughout the world.
The Newport Mesa Chapter has
approximately 330 members including
Young Men, Mothers, Sustaining Young
Men and Mothers, and Honorary Life
Time Members.

In 2012, two additional chapters, Yorba Linda and Tustin
were added and in 2014, La Jolla, Irvine and Mercer Island

A Word From Our President Elect
I look forward to the opportunities
that lie ahead for all of members
of NLYM this year. The Mother
members will be joining together on
committees and on Board positions
to provide excellent programs for the
Young Men. The Young Men will be
leading their meetings, helping to
select their speakers, and deciding
on the philanthropy and cultural
events that they will be participating in throughout the year. Their protocol
lessons will help them learn basics like handshakes and introductions, as
well as prepare them for college interviews. They will enjoy the traditions of
the organization including the Senior Class will be affirmed by their father’s
at the Senior Send Off, and the Junior class will host the annual Etiquette
dinner with the Newport Chapter of National Charity League. We all look
forward to the second annual Dodge Ball Calcutta fund raiser in the spring.
The Compass Dinner in May is always a wonderful way to end the year with
the Officers of the Senior Class leading the evening and celebrating the
many hours of service the YM have contributed to the community.
I will be working with a very well qualified and dedicated Board to provide
programs and support for the organization. Like the mission statement
reads, this is a structured program for mothers and their sons to promote
the development of young men into community leaders through leadership
involvement, charitable and community service, cultural experiences and
protocol education. None of this would be possible without the vision of
the founders of this organization, and we all benefit from and are grateful
for, the continued leadership provided by NLYM National.
Thank you for this opportunity to serve,
Respectfully,
