Ford’s New Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost Introduced
The Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost is sold in Malaysia in the five-door.
Sport + variant in three popular colours – Artic White, Panther Black and True Red.
It is available at all showrooms across Malaysia.
3 BLUE OVAL
Ford’s patented and multiple award winning
three-cylinder 1.0L EcoBoost engine is big on
power, torque and refinement.
The EcoBoost technology combines direct fuel
injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing
that enable this downsized engine to deliver the
power and performance of a conventional 1.6L
engine with class-leading fuel efficiency and
emissions levels.
“Customers are going to be pleasantly surprised
by how the smallest member of our EcoBoost
engine family punches far above its weight,” said
David Westerman, managing director, Malaysia
and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor
Company. “Customers will immediately notice
and appreciate how quiet the engine is, how
quickly the car accelerates and most importantly
how little fuel it needs.”
The quiet and smooth-running 1.0L EcoBoost
engine produces 125 PS of power and peak torque
of 170 Nm. With 25 percent fewer moving parts,
the three-cylinder EcoBoost delivers both classleading fuel efficiency of 5.3L/100 km and CO2
emissions of 121g/km2.
Tiny enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper or
stow away in an airplane overhead luggage
compartment, the 1.0L EcoBoost is the smallest
of Ford’s growing global family of EcoBoost
engines. The 1.0L EcoBoost is the third EcoBoost
engine Ford has introduced in Malaysia.
Replacing large engines with smallerdisplacement EcoBoost engines is one way Ford
is delivering on its green technology commitment,
which balances capability with environmental
responsibility with an estimated fuel economy
improvement by more than 20 percent and 15
percent less carbon dioxide emissions.
4 BLUE OVAL
The award-winning 1.0L EcoBoost engine was
named “International Engine of the Year” –
one of the auto industry’s most prestigious
awards globally - in 2012, 2013 and 2014, an
unprecedented three times in a row.

From 25 July to 30 September 2014, we
provided an opportunity for consumers to
experience the Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost
with a test drive campaign with great
prizes up for grabs including a getaway
to the luxurious Pangkor Laut Resort. All
participants had to do was to test drive
a Ford Fiesta 1.0-litre EcoBoost at any
Ford showroom nationwide, complete
the slogan “I like the new Ford Fiesta 1.0L
EcoBoost because…” in not more than 30
words, and e-mail a copy of the contest
card with the dealer’s authorised stamp
along with the slogan before the contest
closing date. Additionally, drivers who
signed up for test drives also received an
additional mystery gift.
The Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost Test & Win
campaign garnered huge interest from
Ford fans, customers as well as the public,
all of whom flocked to Ford Showrooms
nationwide to experience the awardwinning compact for themselves. The
Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost has been a huge
success for the Blue Oval brand as it not
only boasts a stunning design but also
features that are head and shoulders above
other vehicles in its class and beyond.
9 BLUE OVAL
A three-time winner of the
prestigious International Engine of
the Year, the Ford 1.0L EcoBoost
delivers the equivalent performance
of a 1.6-litre engine with a 999cc
three-cylinder engine. The result of
this is class-leading fuel efficiency
of 5.3-litres/100km with the added
benefit of performance as well.
The Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost also
scores top marks in safety with
seven airbags, a full electronic
stability program, electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic brake
assist, hill-launch assist and more.
The model is also covered by Ford
Malaysia’s three-year/60,000 km
free maintenance plan and fiveyear/ 200,000km warranty.
These were the elements and features that drivers experienced for themselves during the two-month
long Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost Test & Win campaign. And needless to say, the thousands that signed
up for test drives came away mightily impressed and the fact they could be in the running to win
attractive prizes after their experience just sweetened the deal even more.
In the end though, it was Ms. Zurina Bt. Hasbullah who became the lucky recipient of the grand prize
winner of the Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost Test & Win contest. For her efforts, she walked away with a
four-day/three-night stay at the Pangkor Laut Resort for two. Five second placed winners took home a
gorgeous Casio Exilim Digital Camera each whilst ten third placed winners walked away with a Beats
audio headset each. Ford Malaysia would like to say thank you to all who participated in the Ford
Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost Test & Win contest and congratulations to the all winners as well.

11 BLUE OVAL
Ford’s highly-anticipated all-new EcoSport urban SUV,
which defined the compact sport utility vehicle segment
in Malaysia arrived at all showrooms nationwide in two
variants, Trend and Titanium.
“The all-new EcoSport is the newest member of our
expanding global B-segment family and is designed to
meet growing demand for compact SUV’s in Malaysia,”
explained David Westerman, managing director,
Malaysia and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor
Company.
“The launch of the all-new EcoSport represents yet
another step in our product-led transformation strategy
in Malaysia. EcoSport offers drivers an affordable and
aspirational alternative to the compact car that delivers
fun, freedom and adventure without compromising on
safety,” said Westerman.
Based on Ford’s global B-segment platform that
underpins the Ford Fiesta, the all-new EcoSport
combines the agility, affordability and fuel efficiency of
a compact passenger car with the flexibility, style and
driving position of a SUV.
12 BLUE OVAL
Offering superior fuel economy, easy manoeuvrability
and an array of smart features, the EcoSport is just the
right vehicle for both city streets and rough roads. It is
as comfortable wading through flooded areas as it is
entertaining the driver with hands-free music selection
and phone calls, while offering passengers outstanding
levels of comfort and quiet operation.
Ford EcoSport Arrives Combining
Agility, Affordability & Fuel Efficiency
Of A Compact Passenger Car With The
Flexibility, Style & Ride Height Of An SUV
The all-new EcoSport is powered by Ford’s global
1.5-litre twin independent variable camshaft timing
(Ti-VCT) four-cylinder petrol engine. Delivering 110 PS of
power and peak torque of 142 Nm, the engine is mated to
the ultra-efficient six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic
transmission with SelectShift to offer fuel efficiency of
15.4km/L and carbon dioxide emissions of 154g/km.
The all-new Ford EcoSport Trend is available in three
colours – Candy Red, Midnight Sky and Frozen White –
while the Titanium variant comes in Mars Red, Winning
Blue, Midnight Sky and Frozen White.
Clever capabilities
The all-new EcoSport makes driving
fun and intuitive with an array of
smart features, including Ford SYNC,
the voice-activated in-car
connectivity system, available in
both Mandarin and English for the
first time in Malaysia. The awardwinning system enables drivers to
keep their hands on the wheel and
eyes on the road while choosing
their favourite music or making
phone calls using voice commands.
The EcoSport Titanium variant also
comes with Smart Keyless Entry
with Ford’s Push Start Button,
as well as rain-sending wipers,
automatic headlamps and a power
slide sunroof.
There are 20 intelligent storage
spaces, which collectively total more
than 21 litres, including:
• A cooled glove box that can keep
up to six beverage cans cool
• A sunglasses holder in an
overhead console
• A drawer under the front
passenger seat that is big enough
for a laptop
• Front door bins that can hold
1.5-litre bottles and 600ml bottles
• Rear door bins that hold 600ml
bottles
The cargo space at the back is just
as versatile. The rear seats can be
reclined for greater comfort or easily
folded down for additional cargo
space.
With the rear seats tumbled against
the front seats, the boot space
increases to 705 litres, big enough
to fit a washing machine. The
rear seats can be split 60:40 to
transport long objects such as flatpack furniture, while still carrying
passengers at the back.
Other smart and convenient
features include follow-me-home
lights, Rear Parking Aid with Park
Pilot and an auto-dimming rear-view
mirror that prevents the driver from
being blinded by the headlamps of
following cars by detecting glare
from lights behind.
13 BLUE OVAL
Quality that speaks to all five senses
The fluid, dynamic and refined lines of the all-new
EcoSport are clearly defined by Ford’s global design
language and convey a dynamic spirit of energy in
action.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Traction Control
System (TCS) helps customers remain in control at all
times, especially on slippery roads. When it detects that
the vehicle is losing control, ESP automatically reduces
engine power and selectively brakes individual wheels to
stabilise the vehicle and keep it traveling on track.
The spare tire, with an exclusively designed wheel and
cover, is mounted on the tailgate as a classic SUV cue, at
the same time resulting in more available cargo space.
To keep the rear profile sleek, the tailgate handle was
built into the tail lamp.
Hill Launch Assist helps drivers make a perfect hill start
whether it’s uphill or downhill, by holding the EcoSport
stationary for up to three seconds. This prevents the
vehicle from rolling backward or forward while moving
off from a slope, increasing driver confidence.
The cabin is also impressively quiet at high speeds. Ford
engineers were meticulous in their efforts to reduce
noise, vibration and harshness. The articulation index
– which measures how easily passengers can converse
in the cabin – is the highest in its segment. This allows
passengers to chat with one another without having to
raise their voices, even when travelling at speeds of up
to 120 km/h on the highway.
Other features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS),
Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Passive Anti-Theft
System (PATS) with Engine Immobiliser, seatbelts with
pre-tensioners, and the Ford BeltMinder technology and
ISOFIX mounting points for child seats.
Paying special attention to passenger comfort, the airconditioning system is so effective that it can cool the
cabin from 65 degrees Celsius – the interior temperature
of a car that has been sitting in the sun – to under 30
degrees Celsius in just 10 minutes.
The urban SUV’s high ground clearance of 200
millimetres also means customers won’t have to worry
about driving over speed bumps and potholes. And with
its exceptional ability to wade through 550 millimetres
of water, drivers can confidently drive through large
pools of water, which is especially handy during
Malaysia’s monsoon season.
Safety and driver assistance
The compact dimensions of the all-new EcoSport and
electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system with
Pull-Drift Compensation help drivers tackle the stress of
city driving, be it parking in small spaces, manoeuvring in
heavy traffic, or making tight U-turns.
To take the stress out of driving, the EcoSport also
comes with a host of driver assist systems and safety
features.
14 BLUE OVAL
Additionally, the EcoSport Titanium variant comes
standard with a class-leading combination of seven
airbags – including front driver and passenger, side,
curtain and driver’s knee airbags.
Extended warranty and better cost of
ownership
As with all Ford passenger vehicles available in Malaysia,
the all-new EcoSport comes with Ford’s Extended
Service Plan (ESP) to provide added peace of mind to
customers at no extra cost. Ford ESP is a free three-year
or 60,000km maintenance programme that covers parts
and labour free of charge.
In addition to routine inspection and maintenance
services, Ford’s ESP covers free replacements for
selected wear-and-tear items, including spark plugs,
shock absorbers, engine belts, brake pads and wiper
blades.

Ford Transit Specialist Centers Offer
Dedicated Sales & Services
Complementing the Transit is a network of nine
CV Centers located at existing, experienced
Ford dealers, and featuring workshops that have
been upgraded to meet a stringent set of global
standards unique to Ford commercial vehicle

points for the locally-assembled Transit full-sized
vans in Malaysia, they will also extend after-sales
support to all Ford fleet customers.
“We’ve worked hard to understand the unique
demands of our commercial and government
fleet customers, and we know that for them, time
is money. We’re confident that this specialist
sales and service network will ensure their
vehicles spend more time on the road and less in
the workshop,” said Westerman.
Each Ford CV Centre has a dedicated sales team
and Ford-trained technicians offering specialised
workshop equipment, tools and expertise to
manage warranty, quick maintenance and light
repair work as well as air conditioning services.
Only Ford original equipment parts are used.
Offering while-you-wait servicing and extended

Ford welcomed the highly anticipated Fiesta ST in selected showrooms nationwide.
The Fiesta ST is available in three exclusive colours – Molten Orange, Panther Black and Spirit Blue.
19 BLUE OVAL
POWERFUL AND DURABLE
1.6L ECOBOOST® ENGINE
The Fiesta ST is powered by a 1.6-litre four-cylinder
EcoBoost engine, delivering 182 PS and 240 Nm of torque,
a top speed of 220km/h and achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.9
seconds.
FUN AND SMART FEATURES
The Fiesta ST provides a fun and convenient drive with an array of fun and smart features such as Ford SYNC, the
voice-activated in-car connectivity system which enables drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the
road while choosing their favourite music or making phone calls using voice commands.
Another smart feature is the sound symposer which accentuates sound quality. Unlike the conventional
turbocharged intake system that does not amplify available sound pattern, this module is connected to the charge
air inlet duct which separates high and low pressure sides. The sound symposer can transmit engine noise directly
into the cabin, offering a great soundtrack while accentuating feedback quality and response.
Inside, the Fiesta ST is packed with sporty detailing – leather wrapped shift knob with satin chrome insert, plus ST
logo on the front door sill plates. The leather wrapped telescopic steering wheel with ST badge allows drivers to
always be in a comfortable position for an exhilarating ride.
The Fiesta ST is also fitted with six speakers, racing-inspired sports alloy pedals, and ST logo embedded Recaro
seats, providing excellent shoulder and torso support for drivers.
RUGGED AND SPORTY ON THE OUTSIDE
The Fiesta ST was developed with Ford’s core DNA attributes for global
performance cars. It is further refined for an aggressive and sporty look,
with features such as a unique honeycomb grille and chin spoiler with
rear diffuser and fascia extensions.
It is also fitted with dual chrome-tipped exhausts and a high-mount
spoiler along with unique 17-inch wheels that complete the visual
package.
The Fiesta ST also comes with Smart Keyless Entry with Ford’s Push
Button Start, as well as rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlamps,
follow-me-home lights and daytime running light.
FORD’S EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN
The Fiesta ST comes with Ford’s Extended Service Plan (ESP) to
provide added peace of mind to customers. The Ford ESP is a three
year or 60,000km maintenance programme that covers free parts
and labour recommended by the manufacturer as per your owner’s
manual. In addition to routine inspection and maintenance services,
Ford’s ESP covers free replacements for selected wear-and-tear
items, including spark plugs, shock absorbers, engine belts, brake
pads and wiper blades.
20 BLUE OVAL
AN EXHILARATING AND FUN
DRIVE
The precision-tuned and driver-focused
powertrain, suspension, steering,
brakes, and a curb weight of well under
1,200kg works together to deliver an
exciting and fun driving experience. The
rear axle gets increased roll stiffness
to improve stability through fast and
narrow corners, while the body sits 15
millimetres closer to the ground than
other Fiesta variants.
It has increased mechanical grip
provided by suspension improvements
and is enhanced with electronic Torque
Vectoring Control to reduce understeer,
rotating well during hard cornering
manoeuvres. With three levels of
electronic stability control (ESC) to
choose from – Off, Standard, Sport,
the Standard mode is suited for street
driving; Sport mode for higher slip
threshold for a sporty drive; or simply
turned off for race track driving, giving
the driver full control of the vehicle.
Backed by 22 globally acclaimed
awards – including BBC TopGear
Magazine Car of the Year (UK) –
the Fiesta ST is the most awarded
performance compact car Ford has
ever made. It is also an important part
of Ford’s global motorsport effort, and
has garnered impressive race results
throughout 2014 with big names such
as Reinis Nitiss and Ken Block.
“The Fiesta ST offers race-like handling
in a compact performance car. With its
value-added features, it truly provides
peerless steering and handling with
every turn,” added Westerman.
21 BLUE OVAL
ENHANCED SAFETY
FEATURES
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS) helps customers remain in control at all times,
especially on slippery roads. When it detects that the vehicle is losing control, ESC automatically reduces engine
power and selectively brakes individual wheels to stabilise the vehicle and keep it travelling on track.
Hill Launch Assist helps drivers make a perfect hill start whether it is uphill or downhill, by holding the Fiesta ST
stationary for up to three seconds. This prevents the vehicle from rolling backward or forward while moving off from
a slope, increasing driver confidence.
Additionally, the Fiesta ST comes standard with a class-leading combination of seven airbags – including front driver
and passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags.
For increased safety, more than 50 percent of the body structure is made from ultra-high-strength steel, helping to
protect critical occupant safety zones. Additionally, the front and rear crumple zones progressively deform to help
absorb impact energy and reduce the amount of crash forces reaching the passenger compartment. The side doors
are also fitted with intrusion beams to further decrease chances of injuries upon impact.
Other features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Emergency
Brake Assist (EBA), Thatcham Alarm System, 3-point active seatbelts with pre-tensioners and the Ford BeltMinder
technology.

6.9 seconds. With a top speed of 220km/h, the Fiesta
ST also boasts a precision-tuned and driver-focused
powertrain, suspension, steering and brakes, and a curb
weight of well under 1,200kg to deliver the ultimate
Fiesta driving experience.
Since early 2013, the Ford Fiesta ST has won 22
awards and received worldwide recognition. Among its
accolades are being named BBC TopGear Magazine Car
of the Year (UK), Echappement magazine Sports Car of
the Year (France), and most recently a 2014 Automobile
Magazine All-Star (US).
At the Ford booth, test drives were available for all to
experience the new Fiesta ST. Visitors were invited to
sign up for the ‘Fiesta ST Xperience’ event or place a
pre-launch booking. Three classic Ford Mustangs were
also on display, showcasing Ford’s heritage of high
performance sports cars.

nutritious hot meals, in partnership with Grace Community Service.
Staff volunteers assisted in the packing and distribution of freshly
cooked meals to the homeless and those that were in need along
Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur.
In conjunction with Ford’s Global Week of Caring, all 48 Ford
dealers across Malaysia also conducted their own charity efforts
by collecting essentials such as food and clothing to be donated to
shelters and homes within their respective communities.
These initiatives were among the 310 community service projects
that were completed during Ford Motor Company’s ninth annual
Global Week of Caring. More than 13,000 volunteers from Ford
operations on six continents Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North
America and South America contributed 81,000 hours of expertise
and labour to improve their communities.
25 BLUE OVAL
“Ford Global Week of Caring is one of
the many ways Ford and its employees
are going further to improve the quality
of life for people in the communities
where we live and work,” said Jim Vella,
president, Ford Motor Company Fund
and Community Services.
“Ford employees embrace the
company’s legacy of caring and the
importance of giving back. As Ford
expands globally, our commitment to
creating a better world grows
with it.”
In addition to thousands of employee
volunteers taking part in Ford Global
Week of Caring, the company also
contributed RM$348,000 to non-profit
agencies to purchase the tools, supplies
and materials needed to complete
many of the community service
projects.
In Asia Pacific, 5,300 Ford volunteers
participated in over 80 projects in
China, India, Taiwan, Australia, New
Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam,
Philippines, and Malaysia, as well as
seven emerging markets. Projects
across the region last year included:
• Cambodia: Building an education facility at a primary
school in a rural area
• Tahiti: Clean up and rejuvenation project at a local
orphanage
• Singapore: Volunteering at a community hospital to
work with the elderly
• New Caledonia: Helping young children with
intellectual disabilities by providing educational
materials and toys
• Laos: Volunteering at a local hospital

a retirement home, fundraising for the Boy Scouts of
Guam
• Thailand: Conducting a recycling programme and
installing educational equipment at a school
• China: Cleaning up coastlines and rivers
• Vanuatu: Roadside and beach cleanup and donation
of water tank to the local community
While the Ford Volunteer Corps is active throughout the year, Ford Global Week of Caring is the highlight of a yearround effort to flex the volunteer muscle of Ford employees, retirees and dealers to make a positive difference in the
neighbourhoods and communities where the company does business.

The recent floods that hit the East Coast left
an overwhelming trail of destruction and
tragedy, affecting human lives and prompting
humanitarian efforts on a nationwide scale
never before seen. One staff from Sime Darby
Auto Connexion (SDAC) was so moved by the
situation that he initiated a Flood Relief Team
to bring aid to the Ford Dealers’ staff and
families affected by this tragedy.
After Sales Zone Manager, Asrul Afiq led
a convoy of 13 staff travelling in 2 Ford
Rangers and 2 Everests loaded with clothes,
non-perishable food items, drinking water,
blankets, candles and cash collection
donated by the Company and staff between
9th – 11th January 2015 covering 3 states and
the 3 worst towns affected by the floods,
namely, Manik Urai (Kuala Krai), Kemaman
(Kuala Terengganu) and Kampung Guai Bera
(Temerloh, Pahang).
29 BLUE OVAL
What greeted them in Manik Urai were
heartbreaking scenes of devastation, mud
covered roads, houses and schools in
deplorable conditions, and the mess from the
aftermath of the flood. Tugging at the heart
strings were the groups of children waiting on
the streets for any vehicles with relief goods
to deliver aid to their houses as it was evident
that the distribution of relief items were not
reaching the worst affected areas. Indeed,
without a capable 4WD vehicle like the Ford
Ranger & Everest, access to some of the badly
hit areas would have been impossible.
On top of distributing these relief goods and
cash, the team also helped clear formations of
mud walls at the effected houses, left behind
from the flood, some measuring up to almost
2 feet high.
The spirit of “muhibbah” and togetherness can be seen as a
convoy of 20 from the Ford Rangers Owners Club, T606 joined
in the cleaning up and relief efforts. They managed to provide
assistance to some villagers in a secluded area, unable to be
reached by cars and motorbikes due road conditions in the
aftermath.
They also managed to transport a villager’s motorbike to be
repaired at the nearest repair shop.
Daunting as the task may be, spirits remained high as staff and
members of the public joined hands to clean up the houses. The
gratitude on the faces of the aid recipients was priceless and it
is clear that more aid is needed before their lives can go back to
normal.
SDAC’s Flood Relief Team experience on the ground was a
humbling one and ensuring aid reaches the grassroots and
those in need was a key objective of the Team. We thank all who
volunteered and those donated generously to this initiative.
30 BLUE OVAL
In an effort to help promote road safety and enhance
driver’s skills, Ford Malaysia organised another Driving
Skills for Life (DSFL) program in December. Held at
the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS), MARDI,
Serdang on 13 and 14 December 2014, the two-day
event saw a huge number of participants joining the
immensely useful program in order to enhance their
driving skills.
The Ford DSFL programme has been one of the Blue
Oval’s most well-received and important programmes.
32 BLUE OVAL
The programme was established in 2003 by Ford Motor
Company Fund, together with a panel of safety experts
with the mission of teaching drivers the necessary skills
for safer driving. Thus far, the innovative program has
contributed greatly to developing safe driving habits is
now being operated in more than 15 countries such as
Belgium, Romania and Myanmar, with plans for further
global expansion being rolled out in the coming year.
In Malaysia, the Ford DSFL programme was introduced
to the market in 2011. Since its inception here, the
advanced safety training programme has garnered huge
interest and participation from Ford owners and driver
who are eager to learn safe driving skills in order to
enhance their ability to handle their vehicle.
The Ford DSFL programme is divided into classroom
and practical trainings sessions and covers a curriculum
that emphasises on skillsets and driver training that are
not covered in traditional driver education programmes.
Tutored by experts, the hands-on training programme
covers several key and important areas including
advanced car control, recognising hazards on the road,
space and speed management and minimising and
handling distractions.
The theory aspect of the DSFL programme involved
tutoring the basics and fundamentals of safe driving,
which includes proper seat positioning, correct steering
control and understanding the vehicle dynamics in
understeer and oversteer conditions. The training
programme also offered tips on highway driving, driving
in challenging situations like rain and other general dos
and don’ts on the road.
The practical sessions on the other hand provided
participants to put some of their classroom theories
to the test with several unique exercises which include
obstacle avoidance, understeer and oversteer drills
and slalom driving. These segments not only provided
participants first-hand experience of mastering
and controlling a vehicle in these conditions but
also showcased Ford’s safety features such as ABS,
electronic stability program (ESP) and traction control
system (TCS).
Overall the two-day event DSFL programme proved to
be a huge success for Ford once again as it provided
valuable insights and was highly informative for each
participant. The DSFL programme also gave us the
opportunity to collaborate with our valued customers
and enhance the Ford ownership experience. Do look out
for the next DSFL programme as we strive to reinforce
the importance of safe driving and contributing to the
development of safe driving habits for drivers.

Blue Oval traces the history of Ford’s most iconic model ever built,
one that not only redefined the term ‘American muscle’
but one that has left its indomitable mark in automobile history.
The Birth Of An Icon
The Mustang Evolution
April 17, 1964 marked the debut of the Ford Mustang
at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Unveiled by Henry Ford II, the two-seater, mid-engine
sports car immediately turned heads and it wasn’t
long before 22,000 cars were snapped up by buyers
on the same day it hit showrooms across America.
Originally named after the World War II fighter, the
P-51 Mustang, the model soon became intimately
known as Ford’s ‘Pony Car’ and America fell totally in
love with the iconic model. Ford built and sold over
400,000 Mustangs in the first year of production
alone, which far exceeded initial expectations.
Over the years, Ford consistently restyled its ‘Pony
Car’ with added design cues, upgraded features and
bigger and more powerful engines. The Mustang
grew and soon sported a more aggressive grille,
concave tail panels, as well as a full fastback roofline
for the fastback body style. Under the hood, Ford
dropped its high-end performance 289 cid engine
for the 390 big block to gain more grunt and muscle.
In 1967, a collaboration with renowned American
automotive designer, Carroll Shelby gave way to
the GT350 and GT500, which immediately became
highly-coveted models even to this very day.
Celebrity Status
The Return Of A Legend
Few cars measured up to the star power and
celebrity status the Mustang had. In the first few
years of production, the model graced the covers of
countless magazines including Newsweek and Time
and it featured in countless television shows and
motion pictures. The same year it made its debut,
the Mustang appeared in the classic James Bond
movie, Goldfinger while in 1968, Steve McQueen
forever immortalised the car as an icon of film when
he drove a green 1968 Mustang 390GT in the film
Bullit. The epic car chase through the streets of San
Francisco has long been considered one of the best
movie car chases in film history.
Nearly five decades since its debut and six
generations on, the Mustang is still running wild with
over nine million cars sold. In 2004, Ford built its 300
millionth car and it chose the Mustang GT convertible
to mark the occasion. At the end of 2013, Ford lifted
the covers off its sixth-generation Mustang with
intent to market the car on a global scale in 120
countries with right hand and left hand drive editions
as well as fastback and convertible variants. In
typical fashion, the 2015 Mustang continued with
tradition with a cinematic appearance in the 2014
actioner Need For Speed.
