THE MATCHUP
Two of college football’s winningest programs square off when Syracuse travels to Los Angeles to face
perennial Pac-12 power USC on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 8:00 p.m. (FX Network). The Trojans are 10th all-time
with 771 victories, while Syracuse is 15th with 687. Both teams enter the game with 2-0 records. Syracuse
defeated Rhode Island, 21-14, in its most recent outing. USC scored its second win of the year with a 23-14
triumph against Utah in the Pac-12’s inaugural game. Saturday’s contest marks the first road game of 2011 for
the Orange and its first trip to the state of California since 1968.
GOING BACK TO CALI
During more than 100 years of football, Syracuse has only visited the
state of California eight times, but it’s been successful, posting a 5-3
record in those games. The last time the Orange played a game in the
Golden State was in 1968, losing to Cal, 43-0. Syracuse’s last victory
in California was the year prior when it knocked off UCLA, 32-14. The
Bruins are the most frequent team Syracuse has faced in its trips to
California. Syracuse and UCLA met five times in Los Angeles between
1959 and 1967.

Interestingly, Syracuse nearly played another game in California
following the 1915 regular season. The Orange finished the year
9-1-2 and was invited to play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1916, but declined because of its trip west to face
Occidental in early December.
A WIN AGAINST USC WOULD …
… Be the program’s 688th victory, 15th-most among FBS schools.
… Mark the team’s first win in three trys against USC.
… Improve the Orange’s all-time record against current Pac-12 schools to 18-11.
… Give SU its first 3-0 start to a season since 1991, Paul Pasqualoni’s first year as head coach.
… Be the Orange’s first win in a regular-season game played west of the Mississippi River since an Oct. 3, 1987
victory at Missouri, ending a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) in such contests.
… Improve the Orange’s record to 6-3 in games played in the state of California.

Kickoff Classic • Giants Stadium • E. Rutherford, N.J.
Syracuse lost its 1990 opener to Southern Cal, 34-16, at the eighth annual Kickoff Classic. USC
quarterback Todd Marinovich completed 25-of-35 passes for 337 yards and three TDs, the highest passing
yardage total against the Orange since 1985.
The Orange hung tough with the Trojans, trailing 17-13 midway through the third quarter. However,
USC outscored Syracuse, 17-3, the rest of the way.
Despite the loss, Syracuse was not without bright spots. Redshirt freshman quarterback Marvin Graves
completed 15-of-30 passes for 191 yards and a TD in his Orange debut. Tight end Chris Gedney, filling in
for the injured Andrew Dees, caught seven passes for 82 yards, and David Walker led SU with 40 yards on
12 carries. Kicker John Biskup nailed three field goals, including a 46-yarder.

SCOUTING THE TROJANS
USC is off to a 2-0 start, but like Syracuse things haven’t come easy. The Trojans held off Minnesota, 19-17,
in their season opener on Sept. 3. Against Utah on Sept. 10, USC led 17-14 and blocked a last-second field
goal that would have tied the game. The miss was returned for a touchdown with no time remaining and USC
held off the Utes, 23-14. However, Torin Harris’ 68-yard touchdown return wasn’t confirmed until more than
two hours after the game by Pac-12 officials. The TD was initially waved off by an unsportsmanlike-conduct
penalty when much of the USC bench stormed the field to celebrate.
USC is averaging nearly 400 yards of total offense per game. Quarterback Matt Barkley has passed for 568
yards (284.0 per game) and four touchdowns. His primary target has been Robert Woods, who has 25 catches
for 279 yards and three TDs. Against Minnesota in the opener, Woods caught a school-record 17 passes for
177 yards and three scores. The Trojans’ ground attack was boosted by the return of Marc Tyler for the Utah
game. Tyler was suspended by head coach Lane Kiffin for the opener because of inappropriate comments he
made to the Web site TMZ.com. In his return, Tyler rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, linebacker Hayes Pullard leads USC in tackles (16). The Trojans have gotten after the quarterback,
recording six sacks in two games. Defensive end Nick Perry leads the way with two sacks and three tackles for
a loss.

LAST TIME OUT: SYRACUSE 21, RHODE ISLAND 14
Quarterback Ryan Nassib led the Orange to a seven-point victory, 21-14, at the Carrier Dome against upsetminded Rhode Island on Saturday, Sept. 10. Nassib tied the school record with 29 completions against the
Rams and finished with a career-best 318 yards passing and three touchdowns. His third TD pass of the day, a
12-yarder to Michael Acchione with 8:34 left in regulation, proved to be the game-winner.
With SU’s ground game bottled up, the Orange took to the air behind Nassib. The West Chester, Pa. native
connected with eight different receivers against the Rams. Alec Lemon led the Orange with 10 catches for 94
yards and a TD. Van Chew had eight receptions for a game-high 134 yards and one touchdown.
Chew got SU on the board first, catching a 22-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After the Rams tied the
game on a 26-yard run to paydirt by Travis Hurd, Nassib found Lemon for a four-yard touchdown give SU a
14-7 lead at the half. In the third quarter, the Rams tied the game again, this time on a 15-yard touchdown
pass from Steve Probst to Anthony Baskerville.
After punting on its first three second-half possessions, SU put together an eight-play, 80-yard drive in the
fourth quarter capped by Acchione’s touchdown, the first of his career, to pull in front 21-14. The Orange
defense did the rest, forcing a punt on the Rams’ next possession and getting an interception from Phillip
Thomas (his second of the game) with 1:47 left to stave off the visitors.

NASSIB AMONG FBS LEADERS IN
COMPLETION PERCENTAGE
While the NCAA does not track the individual leaders in
completion percentage, Ryan Nassib’s mark of .754 (49-65)
in 2011 is ninth-best on the NCAA’s list of top 100 FBS passers
ranked by average number of completions per game. Bryn
Renner of North Carolina leads the group at .857 (42-49). He,
Boise State’s Kellen Moore, and Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill are
each above 80 percent. Of the top 10 however, only Arizona’s
Nick Foles and Tennessee’s Tyler Bray have attempted as many
passes as Nassib.

NASSIB ON THREE-GAME ROLL
Quarterback Ryan Nassib has been red-hot in SU’s last three games. Dating back to the 2010 New Era
Pinstripe Bowl, Nassib is 62-for-88 (.706) for 735 yards and nine touchdowns against one interception.
His average numbers in that stretch are remarkable – 20.1 completions, 29.3 attempts, a .686 completion
percentage and three TDs per contest. Nassib has thrown three touchdowns in each game, becoming the
first Orange quarterback in history to have three TD passes in three straight games.
COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH
As good as quarterback Ryan Nassib has been this season, his
numbers are even more impressive after halftime. Nassib is 27-for32 in the second half and overtime this season for a completion
percentage of .844. Most importantly, he’s guided the Orange to
two victories when SU has trailed or been tied in the fourth quarter.
Against Wake Forest, Nassib rallied Syracuse from 15 points down
in the final period to tie game before winning it in overtime, 36-29.
Against Rhode Island, he directed the game-winning touchdown
drive in the fourth quarter to snap a 14-14 tie and give the Orange a
21-14 win.

SPREADING THE WEALTH
A total of nine players have combined to catch 49 passes for the Orange so far this season. Starting wideouts
Alec Lemon and Van Chew lead the way with 17 and 12 receptions, respectively. By position SU’s reception
breakdown is as follows: WR - 35, TE - 9, RB - 5.
GOOD CHEMISTRY
The Orange features plenty of experience on the offensive line. All-BIG EAST left tackle Justin Pugh, right
tackle Michael Hay, left guard Zack Chibane, right guard Andrew Tiller and center Macky MacPherson have
64 combined starts between them. Pugh, Chibane and Tiller have started every game since the beginning
of 2010, while Hay has started all but one. MacPherson is the newcomer to the group. He received his first
career starting nod in the opener against Wake Forest alongside the other four.
The unit hopes to continue the trend of producing 1,000-yard rushers. Syracuse has had at least back reach
that level for three straight years. Curtis Brinkley achieved the feat in 2008, gaining 1,164 yards. Delone
Carter followed with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2009 (1,021 yards) and 2010 (1,233 yards).
GAME #3 AT USC
2011 SYRACUSE GAME NOTES
SCORING AVERAGE CLIMBS
Syracuse’s points per game average has gone up steadily since head coach Doug Marrone took over the
program in 2009. The Orange averaged between 13.8 and 18.1 points per contest from 2005-08. In each of
Marrone’s first two seasons, SU’s scoring average was better than 20 points a game, including a 22.2 mark last
season, the team’s highest since 2004 (23.9).
Syracuse is averaging 28.5 points per game this season.
STRIKING FIRST A GOOD SIGN
Syracuse tends to come out on top when scoring the first points of the game. The Orange is 9-3 all-time under
head coach Doug Marrone when it scores first, including a 5-1 record in 2010, and a 1-0 mark this season.
SO IS 21 POINTS IN THE CARRIER DOME
The Orange is unbeaten since head coach Doug Marrone took over in 2009 when it scores at least 21 points
at home. Syracuse is 8-0 in that scenario, including a 2-0 record this season.
SHOW ME THE MONEY
SU’S “MONEY” LEADERS
The StatCrew scoring system defines a “money”
play as one that results in either a first down or a

12 catches this season (9) have been for a first down
or touchdown. Against Wake Forest, Chew had four catches in the contest, three of which resulted in first
downs and other in the game-winning touchdown.
DEFENSIVE TEAM NOTES
FIRST-TIME STARTERS MAKE IMPACT
The Orange has had seven players make their first career starts on defense this season. Five players, defensive
tackle Jay Bromley, nose tackle Deon Goggins, linebackers Dan Vaughan and Dyshawn Davis, and cornerback
Ri’Shard Anderson, made their first collegiate start against Wake Forest on Sept. 1. Against Rhode Island, two
more, defensive end Torrey Ball and corner Keon Lynn received their first starting nods due to injuries on the
first string.
Despite their relative lack of experience, those seven have combined for 48 tackles through two games, 10.5
of the defense’s 17.0 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. Vaughan, Davis and Goggins lead the newcomers with 11
tackles apiece, tied for the third-most on the team.
SYRACUSE SACK PACK
The Orange is third in the BIG EAST in sacks per game (3.0). Syracuse registered three sacks against Wake
Forest and recorded three more in the victory against Rhode Island. The Orange trails Rutgers (4.5 per game)
and Connecticut (4.0 per game) in the category. Individually, rookie linebacker Dyshawn Davis leads the
Orange with two sacks. Five other SU defenders have at least half a sack this season.
RULING THE RED ZONE
Since Doug Marrone took over the program and hired Scott Shafer
as defensive coordinator, Syracuse has allowed its opponents to
score 81.9 percent of the time in the red zone. However, Orange
foes have only come away with touchdowns 55.4 percent of the
time, or slightly more than half those possessions. This season,
Syracuse has allowed just two TDs in seven forays by opponents into
the red zone. Those numbers are a drastic improvement from the
three years prior to Marrone and Shafer’s arrival (see right).

Since defensive coordinator Scott Shafer took over in 2009, the
Orange defense has held its opponent to less than 100 yards
rushing 10 times and Syracuse is 8-2 in those games. Including its
36-29 season-opening victory in which Wake Forest managed just 80 yards rushing on 43 attempts (1.9 per
attempt), the Orange has won five straight when holding the opposition to less than 100 yards on the ground.
The streak dates back to 10-9 loss to Louisville on Nov. 14, 2009.
MORE DEFENSIVE NUGGETS
• The Orange is 9-2 under head coach Doug Marrone when holding its opponent to less than 300 yards of
total offense, including a 1-0 record in 2011.
• Syracuse is 10-2 under Marrone when holding its opponent to fewer than 20 points.

RODGERS PART OF ELITE GROUP
Rookie Sam Rodgers is one of just nine true freshmen
across the country to start for an FBS team at long snapper.
Overall, a total of 15 first-year players earned their
squad’s starting long snapper position, three of whom are
redshirts. Rodgers is also one of two BIG EAST players on
the list, joining Louisville’s Grant Donovan.
Interestingly enough, Syracuse’s opener against Wake
Forest on Sept. 1 featured two of the nine rookies at the
position. Rodgers was on the field for the Orange and
redshirt freshman Logan Feimster handled the snapping
duties for the Demon Deacons.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
ORANGE SEEKS FIRST 3-0 START SINCE 1991
Syracuse heads into this week’s matchup with USC with a record of 2-0 after defeating Wake Forest, 36-29,
and Rhode Island, 21-14. A win against the Trojans, would give the Orange its first 3-0 start since the 1991
season. That year Syracuse opened the season with four consecutive victories. Also of note, the Orange went
unbeaten through three games in 1993 (2-0-1) and was eventually 3-0-1 before a loss to Boston College.

The Orange won its season opener for the second year in a row, thanks to a remarkable comeback that
resulted in a 36-29 overtime victory against Wake Forest. It marks the first time Syracuse has won consecutive
campaign starters since 1999 and 2000. Syracuse defeated Akron, 29-3, in the 2010 season opener before
defeating the Demon Deacons on Sept. 1.
In 1999, Syracuse opened the season with a 35-12 win at Toledo. The following year, the Orange hammered
Buffalo, 63-7, in its first game.
OTHER NOTES FROM THE FIRST TWO GAMES
• The win against Wake Forest was Syracuse’s first against an ACC opponent since defeating North Carolina,
49-47, in triple overtime on Sept. 6, 2003.
• It was the team’s first home win against an ACC foe that was in the league at the time of the game since a
21-16 victory against Maryland on Nov. 19, 1994.
• It was Syracuse’s first home weeknight win at the Carrier Dome. The Orange was previously 0-2 in
weeknight Dome games.
• The Orange’s victory against Rhode Island extended its winning streak against current FCS teams to 28
games, including a 9-0 mark in the Carrier Dome.

2011 SYRACUSE GAME NOTES
MARRONE ABOVE .500 FOR FIRST TIME
With the Rhode Island victory, Doug Marrone climbed above .500 for the first time in his head coaching
career. Marrone’s overall record stands at 14-13 (.519). Syracuse is 10-5 (.667) in its last 15 games which
dates back to the start of the 2010 season.
COMEBACK KIDS
Syracuse’s rally from 15 points down in the fourth quarter to tie Wake Forest before eventually winning
36-29 in overtime brought back memories of some other recent Orange comebacks:
2008: Syracuse 24, Notre Dame 23
Syracuse trailed 23-10 after the third quarter and scored 14 unanswered points to win by one. Donte Davis
caught the winning touchdown with 42 seconds remaining. Antwon Bailey rushed for a career-high 126
yards and one touchdown.
2003: Syracuse 49, North Carolina 47 (3OT)
Syracuse was behind 34-17 near the end of the third quarter before scoring 17 unanswered points to force
OT. Collin Barber’s 37-yard field goal with 27 seconds to go sent the game to extra time. Walter Reyes rushed
for 191 yards in the contest and scored both SU touchdowns in overtime. Reyes also converted a two-point
conversion in OT that proved to be the winning margin.
2002: Syracuse 38, Central Florida 35
Syracuse trailed 21-10 at the half, but outscored UCF, 28-14, in the second half to win by three. Walter Reyes
was again the catalyst, rushing for 130 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter.
1998: Syracuse 28, Virginia Tech 26
Down 21-3 in the first half, Syracuse outscored the Hokies 25-5 the rest of the way. Donovan McNabb hit
tight end Stephen Brominski for a 13-yard touchdown as time expired to send the Carrier Dome crowd into
hysterics.
1993: Syracuse 24, Cincinnati 21
Syracuse trailed 21-6 with 12 minutes remaining. The Orange scored two touchdowns, including a two-point
conversion, and a field goal to win. Marvin Graves set the school single-game record with 29 completions in
the contest. Dwayne Joseph’s interception on the SU 10-yard line with 55 seconds left sealed the win.
1987: Syracuse 45, Boston College 17
Syracuse overcame a 17-0 first-half deficit to steamroll Boston College, 45-17. The Orange scored on seven
straight possessions. Robert Drummond and Tommy Kane each finished with two touchdowns. Syracuse
finished the 1987 campaign with an 11-0-1 record and a No. 4 national ranking.

2011 SYRACUSE GAME NOTES
SU TO HOST THREE WEEKNIGHT GAMES
The Orange schedule features three weeknight games this season. In addition to the season opener versus
Wake Forest, Syracuse will play West Virginia on Friday, Oct. 21 and USF on Friday, Nov. 11. All three contests
will take place at the Carrier Dome. Prior to 2011, the Orange hosted only two weeknight games since the
Dome opened (2007 vs. Washington, 1989 vs. West Virginia).
BAILEY, SCOTT AND HARRIS NAMED CAPTAINS
Running back Antwon Bailey, cornerback Kevyn Scott and fullback Adam Harris will serve as team captains
for the Orange in 2011. The senior trio was elected in a vote by their teammates. Bailey will represent the
offense, Scott the defense, and Harris the squad’s special teams.
“We are very proud of these three young men and how they represent Syracuse University,” head coach
Doug Marrone said. “They all stand out in the classroom, in the community and on the football field. We
look forward to them leading our team this year.”
COACHING IN THE FAMILY
Sophomore center Macky MacPherson, freshman tight end Louis Addazio and freshman quarterback
Corey Edsall each have college head coaching in their blood. MacPherson is the grandson of Orange College
Football Hall of Famer Dick MacPherson, who guided Syracuse from 1981-90. Addazio is the son of firstyear Temple head coach Steve Addazio and Edsall is the son of first-year Maryland mentor and previous
Connecticut head man Randy Edsall. Both Randy Edsall (1980-90) and Steve Addazio (1995-98) made
coaching stops in Syracuse. Edsall is an Orange graduate (bachelor’s - 1980; master’s - 1982).
SYRACUSE NEARS ATTENDANCE MILESTONE
Syracuse will surpass the eight million mark in home attendance at the Carrier Dome at some point during
the 2011 season. The Orange has drawn 7,931,824 fans since the stadium opened in 1980. It has averaged
41,746 fans per game and is 68,176 short of the eight-million mark.
THE CARRIER DOME: A WINNING TRADITION
The Carrier Dome is one of the most recognizable stadiums in college athletics and it celebrated its 30th
anniversary in 2010. Since its opening in 1980, the building has been home to SU’s football and men’s
basketball teams. The Orange men’s and women’s lacrosse teams and the women’s basketball team also play
its home contests in the facility. Below is a snapshot of the Orange’s Carrier Dome football record:
Louisville (1-1)
• Overall Carrier Dome record: 118-70-2.
• The Orange has posted three undefeated seasons at the Dome (1987, 1988, 2001). SU went 6-0 at the
Loud House in each of those years.
• SU won a school-record 16 straight Dome encounters from Oct. 4, 1986 when it beat Missouri, 41-9, to
Oct. 7, 1989 when it lost to Florida State, 41-10.
• SU’s 100th Carrier Dome victory came against Cincinnati on Sept. 18, 2004.
• SU has posted a winning record in 26 of the building’s 31 seasons.

REMEMBERING JOHN MACKEY
Members of the Orange football team will wear a black #88 decals on the back of their helmets this season.
The gesture is a tribute to legendary Syracuse tight end and Pro Football Hall of Famer John Mackey, who
passed away on July 6, 2011 after battling dementia for several years. He was 69 years old.
Mackey played three seasons for the Orange (1960-62) and caught 27 passes for 481 yards and six
touchdowns. Following his collegiate career, Mackey was selected by the Baltimore Colts with the 19th pick
in the 1963 NFL Draft. He spent nine years with the Colts before finishing his career with the San Diego
Chargers in 1972. In 10 NFL seasons, Mackey caught 331 passes for 5,236 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was
a five-time Pro Bowl selection and played in two Super Bowls with Baltimore, winning one in 1971.
Mackey was rewarded for his outstanding career in 1992 when he became the second tight end to be
enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
SU LEGEND FLOYD LITTLE JOINS ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT STAFF
Floyd Little, a member of the College Football and Pro Football Halls
of Fame, and one of the exclusive group of legendary Syracuse running
backs who wore #44, returned to campus in July as the new special
assistant to the athletics director. Little is responsible for development
and donor relations, assisting with student-athlete and team
development and prospective student-athlete on-campus recruitment
activities. In addition, he will handle special projects as assigned by the
director of athletics
“Floyd has been such an inspirational, positive, global, brilliant man for
us and for the world,” said SU Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. “I’ve
never met someone who is as positive as Floyd is -- I just feel like he
can fix anything and anything he touches turns to gold.”
A three-time All-American and 1966 ECAC Player of the Year at Syracuse, Little was elected to the College
Football Hall of Fame in 1983. He holds the Syracuse record for career touchdowns (46) and career punts
returned for touchdowns (6). Little finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting as a junior and senior.
Following his college career, Little was selected by the Denver Broncos with the sixth pick in the 1967 draft.
A five-time Pro Bowl selection, Little amassed more than 12,000 all-purpose yards during his career that
spanned from 1967 to 1975. He gained 6,323 yards on 1,641 career carries and scored 43 touchdowns. He
added 215 receptions for 2,418 yards and nine touchdowns. Little, who led the AFL in punt returns as a
rookie, totaled 893 yards on 81 career punt returns and returned 104 kickoffs for 2,523 yards in his nineseason career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010.
The Syracuse football program has a long and
storied history in New York City. The Orange
added to that legacy in 2010 by defeating Kansas
State in the inaugural New Era Pinstripe Bowl at
Yankess Stadium, 36-34.
Other SU-NYC notes:
• Syracuse won the first football game played in
Yankee Stadium, a 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh
in 1923.
• The Orange has a 6-1 record in the six games it
has played in Yankee Stadium.
• Additionally, Syracuse has played seven games
at the Polo Grounds in New York City.
• The Orange returns to the metropolitan area
when it faces USC at MetLife Stadium in 2012.
• Syracuse will also play at MetLife Stadium in
2013 (against Penn State), 2014 (against Notre
Dame) and 2016 (against Notre Dame).
• The Orange played in the original Meadowlands
eight times, beginning in 1979 when SU played
two ‘home’ games in New Jersey while the
Carrier Dome was under construction.
50 YEARS AGO: ERNIE DAVIS
BREAKS BARRIER
The 2011 season marks the 50th anniversary of
Syracuse’s Ernie Davis becoming the first AfricanAmerican to win the Heisman Trophy. He won the
award in 1961 after leading the Orange to an 8-3
record and a Liberty Bowl victory against Miami.
Davis came to Syracuse from nearby Elmira in
1958, following his hero, Jim Brown ‘57, and
one year later led the Orange to the national
championship. Two years later he became the
first African-American to win the Heisman.
Projected for greatness in the NFL, Davis was the
first player selected in the 1962 draft, chosen
by the Cleveland Browns to create a “dream
backfield” pairing with Brown. But the dream
never came to be. Davis was diagnosed with
acute monocytic leukemia. Less than a year after
the draft, he died at Cleveland Lakeside Hospital
at the age of 23.
In 1979, Davis was inducted posthumously into
the College Football Hall of Fame.
The 2008 Universal Pictures’ production “The
Express,” which chronicled the life and legacy of
Davis, won a 2009 ESPY Award for Best Sports
Movie. The film starred Rob Brown as Davis and
Dennis Quaid as Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. The
film’s world premiere was held in September
2008 at the historic Landmark Theatre in
downtown Syracuse.
A statue of Davis, was unveiled on the Syracuse
Quad on Sept. 13, 2008. The life-size statue
depicts Davis, standing in his Syracuse uniform
holding a helmet under his left arm and a football
in his right hand.
In 2009, Syracuse officially dedicated its newest
student residence, Ernie Davis Hall, as part of the
University’s Orange Central celebration. It’s SU’s
first entirely new residential building in more than
40 years.

THE LEGEND OF #44
One of the most storied numbers associated with
a football program – Syracuse’s #44 – was retired
in November, 2005. The jersey now hangs on
the top beam in the Carrier Dome, honoring the
three individuals who made the #44 famous – Jim
Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis.
Brown, who played at SU from 1954-56 and led
the team to a Cotton Bowl berth, went on to
become the NFL’s all-time leading rusher and a
member of the Pro and College Football Halls of
Fame. He led the league in rushing eight times.
Many still point to him as the greatest running
back of all time.
Davis played for Syracuse from 1959-61. He won
the 1961 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first
African-American to do so, and was a starter on
SU’s 1959 national championship team. Davis also
signed to play with the Cleveland Browns, but
the devastating combination of Davis and Brown
in the same backfield never came to pass. Davis
died of leukemia in 1963. He was later inducted
into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Little, a three-time All-America selection, played
for SU from 1964-66 and led the team to the
Sugar Bowl in 1964 and the Gator Bowl in 1966
(teaming in the backfield with Larry Csonka in
the latter). Little was the greatest kick returner
in Orange history. In addition to breaking the
records of Brown and Davis, he led the nation
in all-purpose yardage in 1965, averaging
199 yards per game. Little went on to have a
tremendous career with the Denver Broncos. He,
too, was inducted into the College Football and
Professional Football Halls of Fame.
How much does No. 44 mean to Syracuse
University and the surrounding community? For
starters, the university zip code was changed a
few years ago from 13210 to 13244. And in 1988,
when the university changed phone systems, the
exchange was changed from 423 to 443. One
of the student hangouts in the Marshall Street
area was named simply “44s.” Number 44 not
only has come to represent football greatness,
it has become a part of the university’s and the
community’s identity.

MARRONE NAMED AMERICA’S
FRIENDLIEST HEAD COACH
Earlier this summer, ESPN The Magazine
attempted to determine who is the friendliest
college football coach in America. Their answer:
Doug Marrone.
The magazine used an interesting test to select
its winner. A writer, posing as a fan named “Jim,”
wrote all 120 FBS coaches with a request to leave
a voicemail on his answering machine that he
could use as his outgoing greeting. “Jim” received
a few responses, including one from Marrone,
who made the writer’s final four along with Art
Bryles (Baylor), Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) and Larry
Fedora (Southern Miss).
Shortly thereafter, “Jim” accidently erased the
messages. He contacted the four coaches again
requesting that they leave a second message.
Marrone was the first to respond. Briles did too,
but not until several weeks later. “Jim” never
heard from Fedora or Ferentz and the crown
went to Marrone.
Why is Marrone so friendly?
“When I was a kid growing up in the Bronx, my
grandmother took care of me,” Marrone said. “On
the subway she’d always say, ‘Get up and let that
nice lady sit down.’ I’d argue with her, but she
would say, ‘Doug, what’s the right thing to do?’ In
my head, I still hear her saying that.”
WINNING IN YEAR TWO
Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone led the
Orange to an 8-5 record and the inaugural New
Era Pinstripe Bowl championship in 2010, his
second season at the Syracuse helm. By achieving
a winning a record, Marrone became one of only
three BCS coaches in the past 25 years to end a
streak of at least five consecutive losing seasons
in his second year on the job. That list is below:

Syracuse
vs. Rhode Island

September 1 at the Carrier Dome • Syracuse, N.Y.
September 10 at the Carrier Dome • Syracuse, N.Y.
The Orange rallied from a 15-point deficit with 11:02 remaining in the game
to beat Wake Forest, 36-29, in overtime in front of 40,833 fans. Senior Ryan
Nassib threw three touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter and another
in overtime to propel the Orange to victory. Senior Antwon Bailey scored two
touchdowns and rushed for 114 yards on 25 carries.
Trailing 29-14 in the fourth quarter, Syracuse scored 22 unanswered points,
capped by a Nassib pass to Van Chew in the corner of the endzone on the first
possession of overtime. The rally started with a touchdown reception by fullback
Adam Harris with 8:26 remaining in the game. Harris’ first career touchdown
completed an eight-play, 73-yard drive.
The Orange defense forced a three-and-out, and SU took possession on its
own 47 with 7:19 to play and no timeouts left. Bailey’s number was called again
and the Maryland native responded cut to the left and flew down the sideline
for his second touchdown of the night. Going for the two-point conversion to tie
the game, Nassib spotted Chew in the corner of the endzone to knot the score at
29-29.
On third-and-six late in the quarter, a pass from Wake Forest backup
quarterback Ted Stachitas over the middle was intercepted by co-captain Kevyn
Scott to position the offense on the 32-yard line with 5:24 left in regulation.
Sophomore Ross Krautman set up for a 32-yard field goal with just more than
two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but was blocked by Kyle Wilbur to end
Krautman’s streak of 16 consecutive field goals made.
Penalties plagued the Orange throughout the first quarter, as the Orange
committed four penalties for 46 yards. Wake Forest kept the Syracuse offense
off the field, while the defense was put to the test early on, led by eight first
quarter tackles from strong safety Shamarko Thomas. The junior ended the
game with a team-best 10 tackles. Despite allowing a 37-yard completion from
starting quarterback Tanner Price to Chris Givens on the opening play of Wake
Forest’s second drive, the Orange defense was able to hold the Demon Deacons
to three points following a 38-yard field from Jimmy Newman midway through
the quarter.
Price, who left the game win an injury in the fourth quarter, went 18-for-31
for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Givens finished with 170 yards and two
touchdowns on seven receptions.
Ryan Nassib tied the Syracuse record for completions in a game with a 29-of37 performance for 318 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Orange past
Rhode Island, 21-14, before 36,421 fans.
With the score tied at 14 with 12:26 left in regulation, the Orange went to
work on its own 20-yard line and put together an eight-play, 80 yard drive capped
by a Nassib pass to Michael Acchione for his first career touchdown reception.
Nassib was five-of-five for 65 yards on the eventual game-winning drive.
The SU defense preserved the Orange lead late in the game with two straight
sacks from Marquis Spruill and Dom Anene. On fourth and 24, Phillip Thomas
intercepted a deep pass from Steve Probst for his second interception on the day
with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Nassib reached the 3,000 career passing yards plateau, placing him eighth on
SU’s career passing yards list with 3,252. Nassib and Van Chew also set career
highs on a 62-yard pass and catch midway through the second quarter. Chew had
eight catches for a career-high 134 yards.
Rhode Island forced a three-and-out from SU to start the second half, and
the Rams offense promptly put together a six-play, 75-yard drive completed by
an Anthony Baskerville diving catch in the back left corner of the endzone off a
15-yard pass from Steve Probst to level the score at 14.
Following a 13-play, 86-yard drive capped by a 26-yard touchdown run by
Travis Hurd to tie the score at seven six minutes into the second quarter, Nassib
and the offense responded with a score of their own, highlighted by the 62-yard
pass and catch to Chew. SU ran their hurry-up offense on the ensuing play, and
Nassib found Alec Lemon in the corner of the endzone for the score.
After the Orange picked up two quick first downs on their opening drive on
plays from Adam Harris and Antwon Bailey, Nassib was picked off by Devon
Dace at the Rams 30-yard line. It was Nassib’s first interception since November
27 at Boston College last season (50 attempts).
Syracuse marched down the field on the team’s second drive, and kept the
series alive by going for it on fourth-and-five from the URI 32-yard line. Nassib
took the snap and moved the chains on a quick pass to Chew over the middle,
giving him a reception in 15 consecutive games. On the next play, Nassib ran play
action and found Chew again for a 22-yard connection and an Orange touchdown
to cap off an 11-play, 73-yard drive.
