Our students have had a great run so far this year and we are looking forward to having more great results in the
upcoming tournaments. The Evert ITF is currently underway and we certainly hope to see a lot of you coming out
to support our players and coaches.
Our students are focusing a lot on getting ready for competition and we have been working diligently to make sure
that they are ready to perform at their very best. Our main focus has been on the serve and the return, making sure
that our players understand the importance of starting each point correctly and having clear tactical goals for both
first and second serves and first and second serve returns.
In addition to working on the serve and the return, we have also worked on putting our players in different tactical
situations based on their individual game styles, strengths, and weaknesses.
The ETA Coaches have also held several meetings with each player to make sure that they understand the
importance of behaving properly on the court, always giving their best effort, and embracing adversity and fighting
through it. We strive to have the students with the strongest character out on the court and we hope to see some
of that great character on display in the upcoming weeks.
All the best,
Mandy and Fernando

Strength and Conditioning
JohnMark Jenkins
November greetings to all ETA parents and students!
I have positive news to share about testing results with our physical goals that we set for our players early in the
semester. As you know, with all of our tests we want to increase times, change of direction efficiency, strength,
power and various forms of conditioning. In doing this, I have emphasized the need for proper nutrition and the
simple fact of increasing ‘lean’ body weight (put simply, ADD MUSCLE). After retesting our players’ body
composition this past week, we had a 100% success rate in that lean muscle weight increase, and/or a body fat
percentage decrease. A few of our players, due to schedule on when they arrived at Evert, have only had their body
composition taken 1 time; however, they are on the same positive track in getting stronger and applying proper
nutritional habits. In the next couple of weeks, we will be doing our strength and power testing for the 2nd time
this semester and I hope in the next newsletter there will be positive results to report again. With all of our
students’ varying tournament schedules, it is difficult to test and progress everyone at the same rate, but this is
definitely the start that we wanted to see. Lastly, speaking of nutrition, I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving
holiday (go easy on the stuffing and gravy!).
Always Thankful,
JohnMark
College Corner
As many of you know, the Evert ITF began on Saturday, November 10th and nearly all of our students
participated in the Qualifying Draw. In addition, we held a College Showcase for our Seniors and Juniors. The
students played a set of Singles and Doubles while college coaches watched. Our next Showcases will be held on
December 1st and 2nd at roughly 5:00PM.
We have encouraged many of our Juniors and Seniors to visit with Andrew and Raynie to discuss their “College
Wish List.” By now, all Seniors and most Juniors should have a list of schools and be in contact with Coaches. Over
time, these lists will change with schools being added and removed.
In addition, each student should do the following things in regards to the College
Selection Process:
• Be proactive and contact College Coaches.
• Be positive and show interest to coaches and programs you are interested in.
• When a Coach contacts you, reply immediately!

CRUNCH Modeling Skills for Parents/Mentors of Child-Athlete
Consistency as parents, coaches and leaders we are often reffered by those whom we seek to support.
For those
beneficiaries it is vital that we uphold our respective obligatory responsibilities. One simple task we must tend to
is to maintain behavioral, emotional and interrelationship consistency. When a parent, coach or teacher displays
inconsistent tendencies in the presence of a child-athlete, a safe and positive environment for appropriate growth
can be compromised. Children thrive in consistent environments; not unpredictable ones. Model consistent
behaviors and practices, and your child will reciprocate your efforts through positive behaviors of their own.
Reliability Exhibiting a model of support and concern for young athletes is an underlying principle in modeling
healthy behaviors and the presence of a reliable parent or mentor can serve to strengthen feelings of self-worth
and confidence. Otherwise, an athlete’s willingness and desire to dare can be impeded. For, notable
achievements aren’t always reflected in hitting winners. More often, they are the moments when athletes dare to
achieve, without fear of failure. Emphasize attempts over outcomes and embrace your child’s efforts over
winning. Doing so supports task-oriented behaviors and helps diminish pressure to win, while promoting the
essential tasks needed to win.
Understanding As role models we can enhance our relationships with young athletes when we seek to truly
understand their backgrounds and perspectives in life. This helps us to learn vital factors, such as athlete learning
styles, effective forms of motivation and awareness about their lives outside of sports. Done genuinely, athletes
will beam at the opportunity to express themselves and the parent or mentor relationship can be perpetually
strengthened. Seek to understand your child athlete and your efforts will reveal greater levels of their dedication,
intrinsic motivation and pure enjoyment.
Nurture as leaders in our respective fields we can model our behaviors and relationships with others as the most
valued levels of humanistic genuineness. Children and adolescents are savvy, and they can be highly aware of
adult authenticity. The fundamental basis of our modeling skills as parents and mentors should reflect our love
and passion for developing sport and life skills in our child athletes.
Concept sthletes have a tendency to be natural visual learners.
As such, the use of visual concepts can be
extremely helpful when teaching sport and life skills. Your child athlete will naturally associate a specific concept
with your message. Be creative in communicating specific messages with your athlete, and use concepts germane
to their social norms. They’ll become more successful in recalling and applying your message, and you’ll generate
some street credibility in their social circles.
Heart above all else, when we are driven by the most primary form of motivation, our ability to understand and
communicate can be greatly magnified. From the most basic behaviors to more complex dynamics, everything we
are echoes our desire to teach and develop life and sport skills. If we find ourselves feeling disjointed from this,
then it is our duty to investigate the nature of our feelings and examine our purpose as parents and mentors. In
the best and worst of times we should never relinquish our source of hope. Model from your heart and your child
athlete will thrive in their scholastic endeavors.

K12 International Academy
Adrienne Burger
As you all know, we are entering into a very busy time of year for our tennis players. One of the advantages of
being enrolled as a student in K12 International Academy is that even while our student athletes are on the road,
they can keep up with their studies as long as they have internet access. Even if they do not have access to the
internet, they can still work offline with their reading lessons and math assignments. But as a parent, you may
wonder how you can help your student athlete remain on track with his school work while he is either home for a
tournament or traveling with the team. Here are some suggestions you may find helpful.
• All parents of K12 student-athletes have parent accounts which will allow them to see their student’s progress
and grades. But I think that parents can learn more about the actual courses by logging in as the student! If a
parent logs in as if he were the student, the parent can see everything…the grades, the calendars, the
announcements from the teachers, the work turned in by your student, and the feedback from the teachers.
• Ask your student specific questions about his school work. Instead of asking how school is going, ask your
student to show you his calendars. You might try asking your student to give you a “virtual tour” of his Pre
Calculus course. Have him show you how he submits assignments. Find out who his favorite teachers are and
why. Ask him how often he participates in the “Class Connect” sessions with his teachers and fellow students. In
addition to showing your student you are interested in his schooling, it will ease your mind about how the virtual
academy really works.
• By accessing your parent account, you will be able to read the “Kmails” that come from the teachers. This is
our internal email system and in addition to messages from teachers, parents can also read newsletters and other
important announcements about things going on at school.
• Be aware of the resources available to your student. Our student athletes have an entire team of support staff
dedicated to helping them achieve success. There are teachers, academic coaches to assist with registration and
pacing issues, and guidance counselors to help with SAT Prep and the entire college application process. It takes a
“virtual” village to educate our student athletes!
By letting your student know that you are plugged into the academic process, it lets them know that you are
engaged in their school work even from hundreds of miles away. You may not be able to go into their rooms and
lean over their shoulders while they are doing their homework, but you have some “virtual” tools to help you do
just that! If you have any questions, I hope you will feel free to contact me at [email protected] or by calling me at
954-654-3361.
Happy
!

Continuing the daily grind at the academy has been a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. We just finished up our prequaly tournament for wildcards into the Evert ITF. I played really well and earned myself a qualifying spot and was
just one win away from a main draw wildcard. Everyone played and competed hard throughout the tournament
and there were a lot of great battles. The Evert ITF has been the main preparation focus of nearly all the students at
the academy and it has driven a lot of the kids to work even harder than they already do.
This past weekend most of us played local tournaments and I played well enough to get my first victory of this
school year. I had a tough tournament and an even tougher finals playing against a fellow academy player. As I
won the boys 16’s, Zac Talic was busy winning the Boys 14’s, so all in all I think the academy had a pretty good
tournament.
But as all the hard work was going on we did have some time to relax during an academy trip to Orlando and
Universal Studios. We spent a long weekend up in Orlando and had tons of fun riding all the rollercoasters, eating
funnel cakes, and enjoying the weekend away from the academy. On Saturday night we got scared pretty bad at
Halloween Horror Nights. Zombies and Chainsaws are the best way to scare tennis players on their weekend off!
As we look forward to the upcoming Evert ITF, we are all working very hard at tennis and at school. I’ll check back
in with you next month but until then its back to the practice courts.

Tennis Year 2012!
Loretto Vella
One of the hottest topics of conversation in the sport world these days
is the length of the pro tennis schedule. The year-ending tournaments
for WTA and ATP players have only been completed in the last eight
days - while some Futures and Challengers, on both the men’s and
women’s tours, don’t end until December 2nd. The amazing thing
about tennis is that the “off-season” is a mere 4 weeks – the 2013 Tours
begin on December 31st in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Five ETA
players (or alumni) are going into the new season from a position of
great strength. Anna Tatishvili (51), Jesse Levine (69), Lauren Davis
(88), Maria Sanchez (127) and Madison Keys (138) all reached career
high rankings in 2012. Anna reached the 4th round of the U.S. Open –
while Lauren, Maria and Madison all won titles at $75,000 events. Jesse
started his climb up the rankings as the winner of a Satellite event in
Texas followed by a semi-final finish at the ATP Challenger in Nottingham. All five players head to New Zealand and Australia in December
and the ETA Facebook page will be reporting on their progress daily.
