All of our job applicants are extensively pre-screened to ensure that our
staff is mature, patient, skilled and responsible. Upon arriving at camp,
all staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training and
orientation which addresses safety protocols, youth development,
counseling techniques, conflict resolution, camp policies and procedures.
“
For two weeks every year,
our daughter is in a safe,
supportive, engaging and
fun environment. It doesn’t
get much better than that!
- Parent Testimonial
The Van Doren Wellness Center is staffed by an RN/LPN/EMT.
The Wellness Center has nurse quarters and several spare rooms, allowing for ill campers private overnight accommodations. Camp Bernie has
access to doctors, dentists, Hunterdon Medical Center and Hackettstown
Hospital. Medical issues will be communicated to parents/guardians.
& LICENSED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY.
Children today are facing some difficult challenges in achieving reasonable goals and building
relationships. At YMCA Camp Bernie, we take the YMCA’s three initiatives of Youth Development,
Healthy Living and Social Responsibility very seriously. Camp gives children the opportunity to be
in a safe environment where they’re “unplugged”, allowing them to learn about themselves, interact
with new campers and experience challenge by choice opportunities.

When I first started I didn’t really know anybody. I knew I’d have
fun, but I didn’t know really know how much fun. You really get to
know people. I feel like I’ve known them my whole life, and we don’t
even live in the same town! - Iroquois testimonial

The Dirt Bike program has not only
taught me how to use a clutch and
shift gears, but it has given me a
passion that I will hold onto for the
rest of my life. The instructors are
certainly there for the love of riding
dirtbikes, however, it is made clear to
the camper that their purpose is not
just to ride, but to learn and share
their passion with them.

GRADES 11
“
The two most important aspects of the river trip are the challenges and the bonding.
You go out on the river with a bunch of other kids and paddle all day long, but the whole
time you are laughing and joking to make it fun and have the time go by. After the first
day is done your arms are tired, but you feel good about it since you have done 7 of the 14
miles, then you wake up and you finish it up. When you make it to the finish line you feel
so accomplished that you did all of it and the whole time you were having fun and getting
to know everyone on the trip.
