RVT Publisher’s Life & Times:
My dear RVT Readers,
I had a very interesting time this year at the
First Ever Vancouver
Island RV Show that
happened in early April
in Nanoose Bay. The attendance numbers surprised everyone.
Being as it was a first time event, they
were projecting low numbers and were
pleasantly surprised when the folks
flowed in! Can’t keep good people away!
Congratulations to Shelagh Bontron
whose draw form was picked by Scott
Littlejohn from Living Forest RV Park,
for the knitted doll seen above. Living
Forest had a booth across from mine.
I had many people from my past
stop by my booth. As I was born in Ladysmith, and lived there for 17 years,
plus have lived in Qualicum Beach, and
Victoria (twice), there have been many
Island folks in my world over the years,
many of who stopped by my booth!
It was challenging to remember faces
AND names. I usually get the faces but
forget the names, but it was fun anyway! Many of you mentioned you have
been reading my comments for the
past two years about my body’s changes since I have been taking the Isagenix
products and have been MAYBE thinking you will give it a try too. . . PLEASE
DO! Contact me to get you started and
you too will feel better than you have
for years and years and years! As I mentioned to many, you can’t pay me to get
6
RVT 153• MAY/JUNE 2013
off these products! Why would I quit
something that works?
From our Dr. Michael Colgan’s Facebook page I found this of interest:
“Doc, I did the whole 30-day, but
then the fat came back. I think it
was there all the time, just hiding.”
“For most people a lot of initial weight loss is water, as the
liver and kidneys start to operate
better, and inflammation (which
holds a lot of water) declines. After that, fat loss is much slower
but steady.
Persistence is the key. There’s
no shortcut. After about one year
of the right nutrition and exercise, at a steady lower fat level,
blood sugar stabilizes, cravings
decline, old fat cells die off, new
cells grow, and fat stabilizes at a
lower level. Being lean is a lifestyle, not a diet.”
Hey, one gentleman mentioned, at
the Island Show, that maybe the reason
I had NO calls for the RV Times old
front cover artwork shown on pages 6
and 7 last edition, was because there
were no prices mentioned. Soooooo. .
. . let’s put a price of $55 on each one.
Whatcha think? That will include the
packing and mailing costs.
If you want a unique dining experience in Nanaimo, check out Mrs Riches
at 199 Fraser Street. A number of exhibitors went there after the Show’s end on
Saturday, and we thoroughly enjoyed
ourselves. . . food AND atmosphere.
On the April 13 weekend, my friend
Vivienne and I went to Richmond to
attend “The Answer to Everything” live
event put on by the Higher Laws folks.
The main moderator was Brandon
Broadwater from Ohio whose website
is www.higherlaws.com.
Vivienne’s hubby decided not to come
so Viv and I shared a room at the hotel it
was in and at the end of each night our
heads hit our pillows and we crashed!
Shifting one’s beliefs is exhausting work
it seems. But I came away from that
event understanding myself better than
I ever have and therefore feeling empowered like never before!
For the most part I do like change. It
is not always easy stuff but I find it does
enrich my life.
I miss not having an RV.
I miss not having a mate.
I have too much house here for just
one person.
I spend too many evenings in front of
the TV alone, for my own liking.
So, after spending three days at Brandon’s workshop, I now find I am willing to do something about these issues.
Stay tuned, as you know I will update
you as I accomplish different goals. I
have been struggling with Indecision
these past seven years since I have been
back on the Island and I now intend to
address that problem bigtime. Yes, The
RV Times and I will continue on. For
how many more years? Well, that I do
not have an answer for. The appreciation you all show me, at each RV Show I
attend, is humbling for sure. I know you
love the magazine as much as I do. And
so far, the advertisers seem to agree. So
there is no end in sight at this point.
For a first time, I have a Lions’ Club
Convention to attend next weekend,
and then the second Penticton RV
Show at the end of the month. I love
all this activity! The knitted doll for the
free draw at the Interior RV Show is a
self-standing Scotsman. Another cutie!
See you at the BC Interior RV Show
in Penticton April 25-28!
Luv ya, Sheila

New Canadian ROUTE 66 Dealers See Major Brand Benefits:
With ten new locations on board and another ten locations in the works, the ROUTE
66 RV Network is aggressively expanding in Canada.
“We’ve been contacted by interested dealers from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia”
says Rob Merrill, ROUTE 66 partner. “And to a tee, what attracts these dealers to ROUTE
66 is the unmatched opportunity to tie their local dealership to one common North
American brand that has proven successful at serving traveling RVers.
With ROUTE 66 dealers in nearly 40 states in the US, as well as a rapidly growing team
of Canadian dealers adopting the ROUTE 66 brand … we are truly one major brand
delivering one common promise: ‘Wherever the Road Takes You … You Can Count on Us’.”
The new ROUTE 66 Canadian dealers currently on board are . . .
Triangle RV Centre – Sylvia Thistle-Miller - Sidney, BC
Chemo RV Sales & Service – Jason Bell - 150 Mile House/Quesnel, BC
Kelowna RVs – Randy Woodside - Kelowna, BC
Arrkann Trailer & RV Centre – Ken Friedenberg - Edmonton, AB
R.V. Lifestyles – Neil Freidenberg - Calgary, AB
Village RV – Darren Gelowitz - Regina, SK
Transcona Trailer Sales – Garth Bromley - Winnipeg, MB
Hiemstra Trailer Sales – Wayne Heimstra - London, ON
Darren Gelowitz, president of Village RV in Regina, SK, sees ROUTE 66 as a natural
brand extension to his dealership’s Mission and Values. “In our 43 years in business we
felt no one could look after our customers’ needs as well as we could. As part of the
Route 66 RV Network, we know that Village RV customers will be treated with the same
friendly, experienced service as they travel from member dealers who care.”
Chemo RV’s general manager, Jason Bell, in 150 Mile House, BC is excited about being
a part of ROUTE 66 knowing the strength of the network and its brand in the US. “The
excellent reputation the ROUTE 66 RV Network has earned in the US gives me a great
deal of confidence in joining the network in Canada. Partnering with nearly 150 likeminded dealerships in Canada and the US, we can rest assured that our customers will
be well taken care of -- like we would take of them -- wherever they travel.”
One of the founding dealers of The Network in Canada, Sylvia Thistle-Miller of
Triangle RV in Sidney, BC believes ROUTE 66 not only serves dealer’s needs but also the
interests of their customers. “Unlike other RV dealer networks, ROUTE 66 seeks to add
value to our customers’ experience after they buy an RV. They can get savings at nearly
500 KOA Campgrounds in North America, traveling discounts through the ROUTE 66
RV Club and the peace of mind that comes with the new ROUTE 66 Roadside/Tech24
program. They’ve built a true consumer brand.”
And finally, owner/president of Arrkann Trailer & RV in Edmonton/Calgary, AB, Ken
Friedenberg, sees being a part of a highly recognizable North American brand as a major
plus. “This will ensure that any of my customers who travel in Canada or the US will
always see a familiar brand that reassures them that they have a friend they can count on.
ROUTE 66 not only gives us a unique customer benefit, but gives our customers a great
deal of peace of mind as they travel.”
Re: The changing RV Industry:
Mr. David Butt (RVT 152 pg. 8) stated
that in the Municipal Campgrounds where
he stayed, he found them to be usually
without full services. He included Grand
Forks. However, Grand Forks has a full
service campground with each of the 15
back-in sites and 6 pull-thrus having 20/30
and 50 amp service, water and sewer.
Free shower and WiFi are available. The
location is well indicated on Highway 3.
The campground is in our City Park
where a playground is available for
children to enjoy and a BMX track is just
next door.
Three years ago the camping fee was
reduced to be more competitive with other
similar accommodation.
The campground is situated within
walking distance of all town facilities and
close to the Trans Canada Trail and other
trails along the Granby River.
A mobile RV service unit with a certified
technician is available to go to your site to
do emergency repair.
While in Grand Forks, tourists can visit
the Doukhobor Grist Mill, The Boundary
Museum, Rock Candy Mine to dig for
crystals, tubing down the Kettle River and
one of our local restaurants for a bowl of
borscht.
For the more adventurous, a hike to
the top of Observation Mountain will be
rewarded by a beautiful panoramic view of
the valley. The Tourist Information Centre
is a short walk from the campground
where the friendly staff will be glad to help
you plan your trip in the area.

Additional dealers will be added to the
ROUTE 66 RV Network in Canada with
the recommendation from these and other
future member dealers. Each dealership’s
territory will be clearly defined to ensure
every dealership enjoys market exclusivity

Kudos:
The Resort is called Salmon Point RV Resort, which can be found on the web, of course,
at salmonpointrv.com. I believe they deserve a million kudos. It is one of exceptional
standards. The sites are very spacious and extremely well kept whether you are under
and amongst the trees or out on the spit. The view of the strait and mountains is always
spectacular. There are showers, a hot-tub and swimming pool and no charge for the use
of any of the extras. It is just a wonderful place to stay and they love your animals also.
The three absolutely wonderful ladies that run the Resort are simply awesome. Monica
who manages the Park, and is quite often in the office with Linda and September, all go
out of their way to ensure you are aware of what the site has to offer, plus give you lots of
other great information.
I don’t think they can be beaten as far as looking after their guests and making sure the
site is just down right fantastic. So if you are thinking of coming to Vancouver Island and
coming up towards Campbell River, please be sure you stay with these great people at a
really great site. They will definitely make you feel at home.

Great Service:
I want to let everyone know about a fantastic service we received this past winter. We
had our windshield replaced by A Touch of Glass in Yuma, Arizona and the service we
received was absolutely fantastic. They let us park in their yard overnight. They were
friendly, professional, and very reasonable. They had no problems dealing with our
insurance company from Canada. Thanks to Brenda, the manager, Fred, the owner and
all their workers. We highly recommend them. Lucille Ketemer

Island Travel Help:
We are planning a driving trip on Vancouver Island. Finding it difficult to locate
RV camping on the Pacific Marine Circle Route at the south end of the Island. We are
planning on three to four days in the area in our 22-ft Rialta.
Do any readers, who have done this route, have any suggestions for us?

Looking for:
I live in BC on Vancouver Island. In
the winter I was thinking of doing the
outside edge of the US by heading east to
see the fall leaves, then down to Florida,
then across Texas to California and back
to Vancouver Island. Does anyone know if
there are any books available on this trip?

Tire Warning:
We were in Arizona for the winter and
while we were there we purchased a 2008
31-ft Class C. Naturally it has duel wheels
in the rear.
Now the problem.
We were in the middle of the desert on
our way to Blythe California from Apache
Junction, when we had a blowout on the
inside right rear tire.
No cellphone service there and 50 miles
away from the nearest gas station.
There was no way to fix the flat on
the highway, there as the motorhome
did not come with a jack or tire wrench.
So we limped on down the highway on
the still good outside tire, until we came
across C & S Tires in Tomahawk Truck
Stop, Arizona, at the intersection of Hwy.
10 at Exit 45. The company’s president
is Jim Cothern. They went right to work
removing the shredded tire and selling and
installing a brand new one. We were only
there for about one hour and $190 later we
left and made our appointment in Blythe.
Now the cause of the flat was those valve
extenders that are used on some rear RV
or truck tires had worn right thru and of
course caused the flat.
I had the tire company remove the
remaining three and went back to the
original valve stems. When the mechanic
removed the stems, which were cased in
stainless steel, he showed me another one
that was starting to wear through. Another
few 100 miles and we would have had the
same problem again.
I later found that in Arizona and
most States you will have to sign a waver
removing the installer of those extenders
from liability in case of a flat as we had.
I would highly recommend removing
all of those stems, as they are dangerous.
This company, C & S Tires, was very
courteous and helpful. Thanks to the
mechanic nicknamed Greasy.
Their e-mail address is candstires@
rocketmail.com.

The Four F’s of RVing
Setting up the RV at Haynes Point Provincial Park
Fabulously . . . in
but in the summer it should be warmer making it more
comfortable for activities both on and in the lake. But the
spacious semi-private lakefront campsites with views of both
the Cascade and Columbia Mountains are what make Haynes
Point so special at $30 a night. And by the way, if your party
consists of BC seniors, the rate is even lower at $15 during
the off-season! We were lucky to get Site #21 midweek in May
without a reservation since school was not out yet. For those
looking for more comfort with hookups or can’t reserve a spot
at Haynes Point, we recommend Walton’s Lakefront RV Resort
which has newer facilities and relatively easy access to the
lake. It’s a great choice for a more glamping experience since
we were there a few years earlier when we couldn’t get into
Haynes Point.
FITNESS:
Osoyoos BC
BY PATRICK THAM
[email protected]
As I’m enjoying the warm weather here in Palm Springs,
I can’t help thinking how British Columbia is fortunate
enough to have its own (and Canada’s only) desert paradise.
Less than a 5-hour drive away from my hometown of
Vancouver, Osoyoos is the southernmost community in the
Okanagan. With its mild winters, hot but not too humid
summers, and spring weather that arrives earlier than other
parts of the valley, Osoyoos has the climate perfect for growing
fruit and attracting tourists and retirees.
Last May we had the pleasure of experiencing the Okanagan
in our recently purchased 2008 Winnebago View on its
maiden voyage in Canada. And Osoyoos was most definitely
the highlight of our trip. In fact, we were able to jam pack what
I consider to be the Four F’s essential to having a fabulous RV
experience in just one day – on my birthday! In no particular
order of importance or timing sequence, the F’s are:
The next F is Fitness and it’s something we like to incorporate
into our RV trips as much as we can. It may be as simple as
walking to attractions close to the RV Park where we’re staying
or hiking the local trails. Here at Osoyoos, we discovered a
15km cycle route (see Google Map on pg. 13) that starts and
ends at Haynes Point. There are a few hills but for the most
part, the cycling is relatively easy since there are 3 stops, which
conveniently feature the Four F’s of Fabulous RVing!
FOOD:
You may have picked up groceries for your rustic camping
experience but RVers do not live on home-cooked meals
alone. Lunches can be a great way to experience a region’s best
restaurants inexpensively and/or sample local favourites when
you’re in the midst of touring or perhaps even cycling. When
we cycled into downtown Osoyoos, we stumbled upon a
breakfast/lunch stop that turned out to be one of our best finds.
Dolci Artisan Fare is part cafe, part deli, part catering business
and part art gallery - doing an admirable job showcasing local
products, ingredients and talent. We had a hearty and tasty
soup & Panini lunch in the outdoor patio, which is THE best
place to enjoy your meal here. Check out this Main Street deli
for great food, ambience and service!
FACILITIES:
We’ve been to ritzy RV resorts, better known for glam-ping
vs camping, but here in Osoyoos, Haynes Point Provincial
Park is THE place to camp right at Lake Osoyoos. Yes, it’s
rustic with no hook-ups, but there’s drinking water and both
flush (in the day-use section) and pit toilets in the park. And
even a free sani-dump on 115th Street. So we figured we would
survive just fine dry-camping in our RV for a few days. The
water was cool (for this RVer who grew up in the tropics)

FUN:
A trip to the Osoyoos or the Okanagan is just incomplete
without a visit to a winery. Along the route we mapped out,
we were able to cycle to LaStella Winery. A low volume but
multiple award-winning vineyard, tastings are available at
a small charge which can be applied later to your purchase.
Like most high quality BC wines, the prices are higher but
we did find great value in their 2011 Unoaked Chadonnay
called Leggiero which has the right balance of fruit, mineral
and acidity for my palate. La Stella names its wines “as music
expressions as no single descriptive word can truly describe the
emotion that waits to be experienced in each bottle.” Word of
caution about cycling to this winery – it’s downhill from the
highway so be prepared for a climb when you’re done and
ready for your next stop.
If shopping is your idea of “fun”, you have to visit the
Osoyoos Home Hardware on Main Street! A short walk from
Dolci Artisan Fare, this local Home Hardware store markets
itself as “a truly unique, Olde-Fashioned shopping experience”
and winner of the BEST HARDWARE STORE IN CANADA
2006 by Hardware Merchandising. It also claims, that “with a
selection of over 100,000 different items from nuts and bolts
to gourmet foods, there is something for everybody.” While it
may not have many specialized RV items, we were pleasantly
surprised at what was (and can be packed) into this 5-level
general hardware store to meet most of your home and homeon-wheels needs.
This Osoyoos trip has set a benchmark for us in terms of
how we’ve measured our subsequent trips. But it has also
encouraged us to look beyond the typical experiences one
would have at a destination. And surprisingly (or maybe not
so surprisingly), every place we’ve been to since has its Four
F’s for a fabulous RV experience. We just had to look for them
more mindfully. x

The Happy Islanders RV Club
2012 Camping Season
BY NICK ROSMAN, President
Our 2012 season started with a well-attended luncheon, at the
Good Company Steak House in Duncan arranged by Bill and
Conny. April 20th was a lovely spring day. For anyone who
may be interested, the restaurant is now called Merlot and
is said to offer up a number of Dutch recipes and delicacies.
May in the Rondalyn Resort, was perfect. The days were
sunny, for the most part, and even with the threatening rain
clouds, we managed to keep it dry. All outdoor activities: golf,
bocci and baseball, were enjoyed outdoors. The “hot tub” was
kept working. Joop had another Andre Rieu video to entertain
us. Pierce and Doris came only for our Pot Luck Dinner as
Pierce had just been diagnosed with a lung condition and has
been unwell. The Goulds did not attend as their motorhome
needed some repair and June was employed as dog sitter for
the week. Therefore neither could attend.
The month of June was also a great weather campout, with
a week of dry sunny and warm weather. Our first order of the
campout was a hamburger BBQ, with all the trimmings, in
place of pot-luck, and for dessert June supplied the birthday
cake, as she celebrated her 75th Birthday. Thursday morning
we enjoyed another “Sawblade” breakfast - mainly for the
newer members. Breakfast was prepared by many helpers.
Even Len Johann attended this day. We now have two new
couples in our group: Leon and Joan, and Ken and Jan. Doris
and Pierce did not attend again as Pierce is still not up to much
exertion. Guenther and Katherina enjoyed a long awaited trip
to Germany, their homeland. The weather held. It seemed as
though as soon as the campout was over, it rained.
July was spent again at Salmon Point, a very desirable place
for this time of year. Weather was super warm and all our
activities were spent outdoors with the exception of breakfast.
Even pot-luck was enjoyed outside on the patio the first
night. Fop and Bill brought the propane fire-pit and it was a
pleasure to enjoy the ambiance. At one point we were enjoying
ourselves so much it caused a neighbour, not from our group,
to complain about our exuberance. Doris and Pierce were in
attendance, sporting a “new to them” motorhome. A couple,
who joined not long ago, decided not to continue with our
Club. It appears that they enjoy wilderness camping over
structured serviced campgrounds. We are sorry that they
made this decision.
August was apparently a very hot campout at the Saanich
Artifacts. Everyone present had a great time. This campout
was not attended by us, unfortunately due to our motorhome
needing extensive repairs. I must commend Leon and Joan,
who kindly offered us the use of their new trailer. They had
decided some time ago that they were going to “rough it”
and camp in their tent. And the story is, that they thoroughly
enjoyed the experience! Good on you Leon and Joan, you are
true campers!

A “Sawblade” breakfast.
Saanich Artifacts.
What a surprise for our campers that came out in September
to Seal Bay. Our first experience here six years ago was
somewhat different as there was no clubhouse or shelter of
any kind then. Now the site is sporting two well laidout group
camp circles with soon-to-be full serviced sites. The 2,000
square foot shelter/clubhouse, still not completed, will be
state-of-the-art. Everyone was impressed with the new look
and the care and attention the owner gave us the entire time
making us feel very welcome. So of course we have re-booked
for another year in August 2014.
This brings us to the close of another season. Our
Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner was a great success, thanks to
everyone. A special thank you to those who prepared the meal
and the decorating committee, a nice complement to a lovely
dinner.
If I am not mistaken, we are in our 16th year of operation as
the Happy Islanders RV Club: 1996-2012.
We are looking for new members and anybody that lives on
our beautiful island and would like to join our group should
get in touch with Nick, Joan or Egon.

It Snowed
in ARIZONA!
BY STEVE SAPERS
Debra and I spent Friday doing some
running around and knocking some
errands off the list. Then on Saturday,
after a wonderful sightseeing trip, we
arrived at the camp gate about 4:15 pm
and it was snowing! The gate attendant
(from Florida) had never seen snow. It
was a sad moment for us, and got the
second of silence that it deserved. Up
to that moment, Saturday had been a
fantastic day!
We started the day by taking a short
walk to Sheep’s Crossing on the Verde
River, really the backyard to our
campsite. A very quiet, pretty place.
An hour ride and we arrived at
Montezuma Castle and Montezuma
Well. (Both misnamed as originally the
thinking was they were Aztec ruins, not
Native American.) Interesting sites to
see, lots of info about how the Verde
River made the area a metropolis, with
many communities, settlements, forts,
etc., over a very long time period. The
well is fed by a warm spring that enters
under the limestone sinkhole, (which
took many years to discover) and there
are four water-borne species that live
nowhere else on the planet. The Castle
used to be open to tour, but was closed
a few years ago; now you can only look
from below. An 800 year old condo!
Sunday – bright and sunny – and we
were off to Red Rock State Park. The
scenes of red rock hills and pine trees
are beautiful. We walked the Eagle Nest
Trail to a wonderful view of the red
rocks and canyons in the area. It turned
out to be a bit of foreshadowing.
On Monday we went in the other
direction to Tonto Natural Bridge State
Park. As the brochure says “Tucked
away in a tiny valley” – it’s supposed to
be the world’s largest natural travertine
bridge, 183 feet high, 400 foot tunnel
that is 400 feet at the widest. Tough
walk down, tougher walk back up! Oh yeah – the road to the park has a 14% grade.
(The steepest grade on the BC Coquihalla Highway is 8%!)
Monday night we watched a movie, “John Carter”, and would you believe there on
the screen is the same desert and mountains we just saw in Red Rock State Park. “We
were there!” – how funny.
Another sunny day on Tuesday, and off to Prescott and
Jerome. In Prescott we finally found a Sewipig. (Only an
RV owner will appreciate this simple item.) We have been
looking for one for a year, and here they were on sale yet.
We took State 89A out of Prescott to Jerome. Motorcycle
spoiler alert: There are 152 curves in 12 miles of this road.
I will say it again – 12 miles – 152 curves. And a 2,000-ft
elevation change thrown in just for kicks.
It’s not a road for the faint of heart, and nothing over
50-ft can travel the road. Jerome is a copper mining town
built on the side of the mountain. Sort of like Greenwood
and Winthrop mixed together. Great lunch at 15.Quince
A Sewipig.
Cantina.
Wednesday was a bit quieter. We played a game of pitch and putt (Steve won),
eight ball tourney (Debra won), bought some propane, washed the truck and both
won a bit of cash at the local casino, and signed up for the pot-luck US Thanksgiving
dinner at the park.
Thursday was dull; the sun hiding in the low cloud for the day. We visited Tuzigoot
National Monument, another condo development from around 1100/1300 AD
(now CE I am told). Most of it was rebuilt; very little original structure left to look
at. One display showed how the big clay pottery pots are rebuilt. It takes about 130
hours to rebuild a pot about 30 inches in diameter!
WHAT WE LEARNED THIS WEEK:
• US grocery stores sell “Cake Boss” cakes – $25 for a two-story 8” round
frosted/decorated cake.
• When you travel with your house you can’t have forgotten to pack anything.
• When Debra drives, and you see a “watch for wildlife” sign something will run
across the road at the next corner.
• If you are Native American, you can borrow $10,000 without collateral, and only
pay $734 a month for 84 months. The interest rate works out to be about 89%.
• Can’t buy decent margarine in AZ, but can buy yummy ‘Greek style’ yogurt. x

Snowbirds
By STEVE SAPERS
Camped in Arizona.
We left October 30 in the rain
and spent a couple of days in the
Mt Vernon/Bellingham WA area
getting some work done on the
trailer (scheduled maintenance and
a few repairs) and sorting out US
electronics (cellphone and internet
data for our Canadian iPad).
We had hoped to see Thrillingham
in Bellingham on Halloween – but no
headlights on the truck killed that idea.
We really began the trip south on
November 1, first stopping in Salem
OR, then Phoenix OR, and finally the
weekend in Oregon House CA. This
camp was high up in the mountains,
and we had a visit from some deer that
come right up to the trailer. (See photo
on front cover!) Beautiful spot, but no
working TV (trees blocked the satellite
dish) no Internet, and marginal cell
service had me itching to get moving on
Monday.
16
RVT 153• MAY/JUNE 2013
The plan on Monday was to get the fuel gauge in the truck calibrated to the
replacement larger fuel tank (56 g vs 36 g) by the company that makes the tanks
– Transfer Flow. Unfortunately they told us the sender in the tank is not working
properly, so they could not do the work. They buttoned everything back up and sent
us on our way with an apology and a free tank of propane.
We were late getting on the road and therefore late to arrive to Manteca CA, where
we had a spot reserved at the “Turtle Beach Fish Camp”. Can’t tell you about either
turtles or fish as we arrived in the dark and left early in the morning. A very nice gent
helped us get (poorly, mostly because of me) backed into our campsite, and then
came over a few minutes later with a plate of cheese, crackers and salami!
Tuesday we made it to Barstow CA, (350 mile day) and instead of making a
400 mile final day, we decided to finish our journey to AZ in two 200 mile days.
Wednesday we stayed near Kingman AZ, in an RV park that also is a “horse motel”.
We could smell ‘em, but didn’t see any horses.
Before we left Barstow we spent an hour or so at the Calico ghost town, a semi
restored ex-silver mining town in the desert. Lots of interesting things to look at, but
by 9:30 it was over 80°F in the sun. Time to get back to the A/C.
We arrived in our first ‘winter home’ (for the next 21 days) on Thursday near
Camp Verde AZ and within an hour it started to rain! The park is backed by the
Verde River, with mountains on three sides, one made of red rocks. We have satellite
TV, but no cell service. Internet is a 5-minute walk to the main lodge.
What we have learned, so far:
The truck and trailer are bigger than they look, the rig is about 57’ long, 13’ high, 10 tires,
and about 12.5 tons.
I need to get better at backing up and Debra needs to get better at reading a level (used to
level the trailer when we park).
Verizon cannot provide a data plan to a Gen 3 iPad – NO matter what you read or are told
by Apple Canada.
While Verizon is quite happy to provide a Canadian (with no fixed address) a month-tomonth data plan, ATandT will only do this if they are given a $500 deposit.
Oregon drivers will stop to let you j-walk, or make a left, but will cut in front of you on the
Interstate with only inches to spare.
Washington roads are not as good as Oregon roads.
California roads are worse than Washington roads, and WAY worse than Oregon roads,
and towing you can’t go faster than 55 mph.
Arizona roads are wide and kinda broken up. But you can go 75 mph!
Dry sunny days in November are wonderful.
We are not in a hurry; we will get there when we get there.
Never arrive at an RV park in the dark.
Debra has become addicted to the iPad – playing Spider Solitaire and Sudoku – I may
need to buy another for me.
If you want the ‘Personal Hotspot’ function (iPad) you can only take
the 5G data plan from AT&T.
The ‘Personal Hotspot’ iPad function really works well, very simple to
setup and use.
Never think that your satellite dish will find the signal if there is a tree
within 10’ of the trailer.
We live by three checklists: Inside (departure) Outside (departure)
and Arrival.
Fort Victoria
RV Park
It’s weird being in the US and watching Steve and Sophie on Global
News.
It’s fun listening to the Port Mann gridlock report while watching the
sunrise in the desert; ditto for rainy weather reports.
DKJ Cell
Always pack something for lunch on the road. Sometimes you just
can’t stop for a meal when your rig is 50–ish feet long.
Truck stops are our new best retailers. They have everything and big acre parking.
AT&T 4G is great – when it’s there; one bar (we call it 4G with a pinky) not so good,
AT&T does like to fall back to 3G for some reason.
✔ 300 Hookups ✔ Water/Sewer/Electric/TV
Brown toast is ‘wheat’, the cheque is the ‘ticket’ and tea is iced unless you ask for ‘hot tea’
(even at breakfast).
Iron Skillet puts the cutlery in what looks like a mini barf bag. Debra suggested that might
be foreshadowing.
✔ Laundromat ✔ Sani-dump
In Oregon professional truckers pay a discounted price for diesel fuel.
In California truckers pay more than we do.
XM (satellite) radio is much better in the US. That’s another rip for Canadians, who we
believe pay more for less (service).
I am happy to see motorcycles on the road in November, but this “no helmet” thing is just
plain crazy! s

The Wager
When we pulled our 1979 Execuvan
out of storage for a trip to the NWT
to visit my parents and two of John’s
children, our mechanic looked at
us sideways and muttered under his
breath.
“It’s an old van,” he warned finally.
“Things break down. But we’ve fiddled
with the driver’s side window and the
windshield wipers work. $157.”
His disapproval hung in the room
like fog.
“Our mechanic is a van snob,” I
remarked to John on the way out.
“Really!”
True, the original shag carpet smelled
worse than ever, thanks to a little
incident with the porta-pottie the year
before, but John had fixed the wobbly
passenger-side seat and I was wildly
excited. Last trip to Yellowknife, I’d had
to brace myself for 6,000 kilometers.
The next day we gassed up our van and
stocked up on pasteries from True Grain
Bakery in Cowichan Bay and bought
fruit and stuffed some canned chili into
the locker under the cooler. “We have
two of everything we could need,” I told
John. “Kobo Reader and spare books.
BBQ lighter and matches. MP3 player
and CDs. Underwear and bathing suits.
Extra pills for everybody. A comb and
a hairbrush. Regular toothbrushes in
case our electric ones run out of battery
before we can get to an electric outlet.
Thermos and travel-mug. Ground coffee
and instant. Butter and margarine. Mars

Bars and cookies. I’ve got my recorder. Do you want to bring your banjo?”
“No,” John said.
“We’d probably trip over it,” I agreed.
“It’s not that,” he said. He paused.
“Then why?” I asked.
“This old van might not make it all the way to Yellowknife and back,” he explained.
“If we have to abandon it by the side of the road and hitch-hike, I don’t want to lose
my banjo.”
“Oh,” I said. Silently I continued to make lists and pack.
There was a dramatic crack in the windshield extending east to west across the
driver’s side at eye level, and though John swore the carpet didn’t smell, if we left
the door open passing citizens walking their dogs visibly flinched. Still, I was very
pleased with our Execuvan. And I had faith in it – the kind of blind optimism that
throughout my life has gotten me into all kinds of trouble.
The next morning John returned from coffee at Zoe’s Coffee Shop with a grin on
his face. “The neighbors are taking bets the van won’t make it,” he said. “They’re
talking about drawing up a map with flags on it and the person who bets on the flag
closest to where we break down wins the pot.”
I laughed out loud. “No!” I said. “Imagine thinking we’re going to break down!”
Just then we heard a shout from our friend Richard.
“Hey John, Catherine,” he yelled. “I have $20 on Prince George. If you arrange to
break down around there, I’ll split the pot. There might be $30 - $40 in it for you.”
I laughed, but uneasily this time. “We don’t INTEND to break down,” John said.
“Think about it,” Richard said. “$40 might get you home.”
“It’s a good offer,” I said.
“We might take you up on it,” John added.
When we pulled out, exhaust billowing behind us in gusts. We attracted such
amazed stares from passers-by that I was astonished.
“Our van is a hit among envious people,” I thought. “There is no other like it.”
We made a 12 noon start, but I’d forgotten the boat key, so we tried again and left at
12:15. “Goodbye, goodbye,” we called to all our neighbours. “Goodbye.”
The sun shone fiercely upon us, but the van was shaded and smelly.
“Quick, open a window,” I begged, “and let out the stink.”
“This van does not stink,” John said, but because the driver-side window had just
been fixed, John was glad to unroll it just to show off.
“I’m gagging here,” I complained. I changed the subject. “Look – there’s a spiderweb on my side of the van.”
“Well, wipe it away,” John said.
I leaned forward and took a swipe at the spider-web, but as soon as I’d finished an
enormous spider ran from behind the console, glared balefully at me with his shiny
eyes and disappeared into an air vent.
“Ewwww,” I said. I wriggled in my seat. The seat did not move. I shifted again.
The seat remained as bolted to the floor of the van as if it had never wobbled in its
entire career. I heaved a sigh of relief that blew the dust off the window. “You fixed
the seat!” I said. “It’s really fixed. Darling, I love you.” I sat back and prepared to enjoy
the journey in a state of great contentment.
“Did you pack the propane?” John asked.
“Check.”
“Did you pack any razors? We’ll be gone a month and I might want to shave.”
“Check.”
Settled in for the night in Hope BC. John looking a little tired.
John fell silent. “Mars Bars?”
“Check. And apples and pasteries
and coffee and cheese. Leave nothing to
chance, I always say.”
“Except this old van,” John said, then
he concentrated on his driving all the
way to the ferry at Nanaimo.
We sat in the steaming heat at the
ferry terminal for an hour-and-ahalf drinking coffee and crunching
Gala apples and gobbling True Grain
pasteries.
”I don’t understand why every apple
has a sticker,” I remarked.
“I don’t understand why the man in
the RV in front of us is wearing those
shorts,” John said, indicating a middleaged gentleman wearing a pair of blueflowered bermudas. “I wouldn’t be
caught dead in a pair of shorts like that.”
I looked at the man’s shiny white RV.
“I bet he thinks the same about our van,”
I said. I plugged in a cassette tape and
Karen Carpenter’s smooth voice filled
the cab.
“I’m on the top of the world
Looking down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found
Ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the
world.”
I opened my window again to let the
smell out. John opened his window
too. He said he wanted a cross-breeze,
but I think he was actually choking,
though he wouldn’t admit it. It was a
very long wait for the ferry. The bay was
all concrete railings and front loaders
and electric cars scattered like debris.
We were third RV from the front and
there was no sign of a ferry for another
hour, but finally it arrived and our van
lurched onboard.
Enjoying the air conditioning and
comparatively sweet odour of the ferry,
I read a book about India while John
drank coffee.
Back in our Execuvan, fortified by
coffee and up on the latest information
on India, we sped off the ferry and
glided optomistically onto Trans Canada
Highway #1, only to be crowded into the
world’s longest 100 km long rush-hour
traffic jam I have ever encountered.
As the Execuvan slowed to a crawl,
the van spider emerged from behind the
console and began respinning his web,
looking over his shoulder to give me dirty
looks as he did so, but I was too astonished
at the traffic to do battle with him.
Finally there was green grass and trees
and the mountains crowding closer and
the air cooled off and the wind gusted
against the side of our van as we picked
up speed. At 8:00 we made Hope. We
lurched off an exit and landed at a gas
station where we asked directions to the
nearest RV campsite from an obliging
young woman. “Original shag carpet,” I
said, indicating the van.
“Kewl,” she replied, and smiled.
We found the Coquahalla Campsite
and parked, and rested in the fragrant
dark and congratulated each other on
a successful trip. “How far to Prince
George?” I asked my husband.
“We’re not there yet,” he replied, “But
we survived the first day.” s

The purpose of the 2012 road trip was to return to Newfoundland and Labrador for our third visit - no relatives or friends. We just think
it is a great place. This visit we spent 27 days in the Western and Northern Penninsulas, which are our favourites.
We retired in June of 2001, bought our 2002 Toyota Tundra truck in January, 2002, and a 20 foot Layton fifth wheel in August, 2002. We
took our first trip to the Maritimes, Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003 (April to mid-August).
We upgraded our fifth wheel trailer to a
24 foot 2005 Okanagan Eclipse and took our
second trip in 2005 (March to October).
We spent March to mid-June crossing the
United States, entering back into Canada
through Maine. We returned to Sooke by
mid-Ocober through Canada.
We still have the same truck and fifth
wheel. The trailer is just the right size for
the two of us plus we never have a problem

Our TRAILER
Karen and I have owned our 25 ft Wilderness travel trailer
for about six years and in most respects are really happy with
it. One complaint has been the lack of space in the living
area. There is a small slide with a sofa and anyone sitting on
the sofa with their feet out blocks any movement through the
trailer. After a few days it starts to feel quite confining.
We kept looking at our large four-seat dinette, thinking that
for the two of us it was a poor use of space and that reducing
or removing it would open things up.
We decided to remove the dinette and replace it with a base
unit we call a buffet, and a table that retracts halfway into it
when not in use. At mealtime the table pulls out to seat two.
If we have guests it has extending hardware and leaf inserts
to allow it to expand and seat four. Two extra chairs fold and
store under the bed.
While we lost the storage space under the dinette seats we
gained more and easier-to-access storage behind the six buffet
doors.
The buffet top, table, and doors are ¾ in. oak plywood edged
with solid oak. The face frame is 1x2 oak and the interior
shelves and dividers are ¾ in. birch plywood.
The wood costs were about $200 and the full extension
drawer slides and table hardware about $100 from Lee Valley.
We found the wooden folding chairs at Costco for $30 each.
While we were at it, we also replaced the old vinyl flooring
with new vinyl click tile, also from Costco.
We now have more room to move around, better storage in
the new buffet, easier access to the upper cabinets and it cost a
lot less than a new trailer would have!
The old dinette we decided to change.
The space after removal of the dinette.
New flooring and roughed-in buffet.

RV SERVICE
BY STEVE JOYCE, Service Manager
Jubilee RV Centre, Kamloops, BC
[email protected]
[email protected]
Here we are, the kick-off to a new season of camping and
relaxing in the great outdoors of British Columbia.
Recently, due our strong Canadian dollar, I have been
receiving more and more requests for Propane Certifications
from Canadians who have purchased used RV’s south of the
border. Unfortunately for some consumers, who purchased out
of Canada, the great savings they thought they received can soon
turn into quite a huge expense.
The propane gas codes between Canada and the United
States do vary, and often these imported vehicles do not meet
our provincial standards. Depending on the size of the RV, the
costs associated in bringing the RV into compliance can run the
owner anywhere from $1,500 - $3,500. Please understand that
these numbers are only an estimate, it could be more.
Now you may think this seems expensive, but you do have to
realize there is a considerable amount of time taken to remove all
the non-conforming propane supply lines and fittings inside the
RV and reinstalling the new lines as per the Provincial Gas Code
and issue a new registered decal. Also there may be venting
issues with the appliances, and or after-market propane-fired
equipment such as Catalytic Heaters, which do not meet code.
Also a dealer will inspect for, but not limited to the following:
locks on LP doors, type of grommets used through the structure
to protect the propane lines, carbon monoxide detectors,
exterior doors interfering with appliance venting, appliances
sealed from the interior of the RV, regulator mounting, operation
and protection, couplers, tees, or fittings to the appliances inside
the RV.
Canadian RV dealers bring in all their new RV inventory
meeting these codes.
Thank-you, and let’s have fun out there.

RV PARTS

RVT 153• MAY/JUNE 2013
Well it won’t be long before the spring camping season will
be here. The May long weekend is only a few weeks away. If by
chance the weather is not as accommodating as we want there are
a couple of thing you can use to make the camping weekend more
enjoyable.
Faulkner Furniture makes a variety of outdoor patio mats.
These mats come in several sizes, colours and styles to match
your RV. Besides the 9’x6’, 9’x12’ & the 8’x20’ there is a new mat
that is 3’x6’- a great size for the entrance door floor. All mats are
made from a durable polypropylene material that is UV protected
and feature different reversible patterns between front and back
sides. With most mats, an optional water resistant black nylon
storage bag is also available. These mats will help keep the dirt
and grime from getting into your RV. Price range is from about
$25 to $140 for the largest size. Check with your parts accessory
advisor for other brands available. Faulkner’s website is www.
faulknerfurniture.com. Also check www.camco.net and www.
mingsmark.com for other patio mat manufacturers.
Step mats are also great products to put on your RV steps.
Available in a wide range of colours and styles. Prest-O-fit, Camco
& Outrigger are just a few manufacturers of these great products.
Make sure you measure the step tread width for proper sizing.
Other items to help in less than ideal conditions are slide-out
toppers. Dometic A&E & Carefree are well known manufacturers.
Toppers help to keep rain and debris off the top of your slide
lessoning any rainwater from entering your RV and possible
damage to the slide seals. Available from 42” to 196” in size.
White vinyl is the most popular colour. Check out either www.
edometic.com or www.carefreeofcolorado.com for all the options
available for these products. Also, to measure for a slide topper,
measure your slide from the outside edge to the outside edge.
Using that measurement your dealer will use a sizing chart to
ensure a proper fit.
With crazy spring weather, sudden wind gusts can ruin you RV
awning. Try using awning fabric de-flappers and awning hold
down strap kits to prevent the fabric from “flapping” in the wind,
and hold down kits to secure the roller tube to the ground. These
products are available from a variety of manufacturer for either
manual or electric awnings.
To help keep warm and to add some comfort to your camping
experience, check out LP gas portable fire pits. Fire pits are
usually self-contained with either lava rock or simulated logs.
There are several manufacturers each providing different options,
cooking grills etc. In most cases fire pits will connect to a 20-lb
propane tank or to propane quick disconnect located on the low
pressure side of your propane system. There are also different
adapters to connect to disposable 1-lb bottles. Here are a couple of
websites to check: www.port-a-fire.ca and www.camco.net.
Your local RV dealership Parts and Accessory Department
can assist you with all the items mentioned. Please stop by to see
this and many other products. Have a safe and happy camping
holiday!

RV
Canada
and the
Polar
Bear
Dream
BY BARB REES
Barb and Dave Rees’s fourth caper around Canada
started with a bang!
Packed for the next trip, Boo the Menopausal Van 2 burst
into flames parked in a Powell River mall.
That was the beginning of the Rees’s Western Canada
tour to Churchill, MB.
Boundless beauty, breakdowns, fascinating people and
polar bears filled the summer of 2011.
From the wilderness of northern BC to the prairies of AB,
to the farming communities of SK, and up to Thompson,
MB where they took the slow train to Churchill to make
their dreams come true.
However the story took a tragic twist at the end.
Different from the three previous RV Canada travelogues,
RV Canada And The Polar Bear Dream will touch your
heart like never before. At the same time the book tells
of selling at markets to help pay for the trip, and offers
valuable RV resources and tips.

Ode to the Highway Travellers
BY MINA ZUROWSKI, Arizona Trip 2013
To fellow travellers on the road
And truckers with their heavy loads
There’s fifth wheel trailers heading far
And motorhomes who pull their car
Cyclers and bikers, our occasional companions
Scaring us silly as they zip through the canyons
All of us from different places
Looking ahead with bright shiny faces
Away from family, home, and friends
The winding highway that never ends
Each has a story, all their own
Enjoying their travels until safely home.

RV OOPS Awards
“What’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done while RVing?”
BY LARRY MacDONALD, Powell River, BC
# 4: STOP & LOOK
Considering that backing-into-things is the most common mishap reported by RVers, I felt it
appropriate to include this year’s incident. Mike had bought a new motorhome and was attempting
to back it out of his driveway without a spotter. Just as his back tires neared the opposite curb, he
felt the rig lurch and heard a loud CRUNCH! Thinking he had just bumped into the mailbox across
the street, Mike angrily and hastily pulled forward. Not a good move. Yes, the mailbox had been
knocked off, but worse, the 4-by-4 post embedded in concrete was pushed down well under the rear
quarter. The forward movement resulted in an even louder CRUNCH when the post, acting like a
spear, pierced the flooring and tore out portions of the rear bedroom, exhaust system, and rear wall.
The repair bill came to $3,000.
Helpful hint: If you happen to back into something, immediately stop and assess the situation.
Often, more severe damage occurs in the process of pulling forward. Better yet, avoid backing into
something by using a spotter.
# 3: HOLA SHOULDER
2
After a relaxing winter on the sunny beaches of Baja, Mexico, Ron joined a caravan of motorhomes
heading for the US border. The northbound lane was quite narrow – 9 1/2 feet of pavement – with a
6-inch drop off onto a “shoulder” littered with rocks and other debris. Along the way, an impatient
motorist attempted to pass but was forced to cut in sharply to avoid an oncoming truck. To prevent
being sideswiped, Ron moved over off the road and onto the rocks, eventually stopping after a
very scary and bumpy ride. Fortunately, no one was injured and he was able to continue with the
caravan for the remainder of the trip. At home, after repairing a bent frame and numerous dents
and scratches, an RV dealer handed Ron a bill for $10,000.
In this instance, Ron did most of the right things, including traveling in a caravan when in
Mexico. Had he not moved over or lost control on the rocky shoulder, the outcome might have been
disastrous. For that he is to be congratulated. On the other hand, this mishap could easily have been
avoided. Ron was driving his large Class A on a narrow road with a severe drop off and inadequate
shoulder. Talk about living on the edge! In our search for adventure, we must always be aware of
road conditions – too narrow, soft, wet, slippery, or steep – that may be unsafe for large, heavy RVs.
Avoidance is always the best option.

PRESIDENT’S
CORNER
BY BILL WRIGHT
Greetings RV’ers,
As you read in the last edition, Mr. Vice President Rick
covered my butt while I attended to family matters in Ontario.
Just to let you know, that is not the province to go to in February.
Great job Rick, I can see you are bucking for a promotion and I
know Cathy, your wife, will put in a good word for you.
For some reason, the winter seems much longer or maybe
it is just because of the Ontario trip. Nevertheless, we RVers
don’t let the weather stop us. The days of Tents and Tarps for
the most part are history for our hardy group as we rough it in
our heated/air conditioned RVs. With all-season parks, we can
enjoy the lifestyle all year round if we so desire.
I was having a conversation with a couple, not long ago,
that asked “What do you do in an RV when the weather is not
pleasant?”
I replied, “You don’t want me to go there, do you? Traveling
with your RV affords a fantastic way to meet and make great
friends. When staying in hotels, one hardly ever gets a Hello
or a Good Morning! One time I was having difficulty aligning
my satellite dish and before I could turn around several RVers
came over to help me out. In the hotel world, when I asked if
there was a trick to getting my Internet working, no answer
from one person and a sharp voice for another saying “Call the
front desk!” So get out there and enjoy the RV lifestyle where
the weather is always warm and dry inside, for the most part.”
We have another year of topnotch Rallies ahead, and I know
everyone is looking forward to getting out there and attending
as many as possible. Our Kick-Off Rally will be a great
memory by the time you receive your copy of this magazine,
and the Fort Langley Rally, known as our Campfire Rally, will
be next. For those attending, please bring wood if you can, as
we will have access to the campground’s fire-pit. This Rally will
be June 14 – 18, 2013 so register online as sites go quickly for
this popular RV Park. Plan B is to mail in the Rally application
form in this magazine, by June 1st. The cost for this Rally is
Rig+2 people: $90. Any questions that may need an answer,
give our Rally-guy, Rick Hughes, a call at 604-701-0143 or
myself at 604-626-5292.

Sasquatch Pot-Luck Rally is to be held at Eagle Vista RV
