These items form part of our heritage but their DNA is evident in the work of contemporary Irish fashion and textile designers who continue to weave the crafts skills of their forefathers into their creations. Louth Luxe Edmund McNulty’s less-is-more designer knitwear for men is inspired by the colours of his native Donegal. “It is not enough to only design clothing,” says McNulty whose collections sell very successfully in Japan where buyers appreciate his innovation and hand-crafted finish. “You must also have an understanding of the business of fashion,” adds Edmund who is now based in Drogheda, Co. Louth. “Japan recognises the idea of slow fashion and the use of good fibres and strong design.” This has influenced Edmund’s range of sweaters and scarves, creating products that are both timeless and luxurious. The very best products - each ‘Imagined, Designed and Made in Ireland’ - on display at the National Crafts & Design Fair Amongst the exhibitors at the National Crafts & Design Fair you will discover over 200 craft enterprises registered with the Crafts Council of Ireland presenting a stunning array of quality gifts. Watch out for the ‘Imagined, Designed, Made in Ireland’ signage on their stands, giving you the confidence that all the craft products they are selling are Irish made. Design Intelligence Brilliant design has always been essential but the story behind the making of the object is becoming more important; the choice of materials and technique, where something was made and who made it, all combine to add value, desirability and exclusivity. This marriage of design, materials and craftsmanship is alive and well here in Ireland, which in 2013 is brimming with fresh thinking, 2 contemporary design ideas and new approaches to making. Focus on Inspiration At the Crafts Council of Ireland Display Area in the centre of the Main Hall see craft demonstrations over the 5 days of the fair. Browse through the selected products on display where you will find unique gifts that say as much about the giver as the receiver. After the Fair keep up to date on the amazing selection of beautiful jewellery, ceramics, home, textiles and gifts available nationwide by visiting www.giveirishcraft.com. We hope you will be delighted and inspired by the diversity of craft that this country has to offer – and we wish you a happy and craft-filled Christmas. Enjoy the fair. Stand number 83 edmundmcnulty.com Hats off to Her Wendy Louise Knight creates award-winning hats and headpieces for all occasions from her design studio in County Longford. Hat making is in her genes – her grandparents had a hat factory in Luton in the UK and she rescued a couple of hat blocks from that establishment, which she uses to form some of her creations. “I specialise in creating headwear to suit both the occasion and the wearer – the focus is on style, comfort and confidence,” says Wendy Louise. “Each hat is made individually by me. Most of the fabrics come from milliner suppliers in the UK. I also use vintage trims and ribbons and recycle elements of old beaded necklaces.” Stand number 17 wendylouisedesigns.ie 3 Crafts Council of Ireland Meet the Makers Adornment is a practice that is as old as our Celtic past. While the well-known historic designs of our heritage continue to inspire today’s gold and silversmiths, the hand-made creations of this generation of craftspeople are influenced by contemporary design and making. New technologies also feature as jewellery design and making adapts to the 21st Century landscape. Home is where the hearth is. Irish product and furniture designers take elements of our past and have reinvented them for modern living, all the while celebrating our materials, culture and heritage. New Stone Age in Meath Eric Byrne of Hennessy & Byrne is a second generation master stone mason based in County Meath. With over twenty years experience working with indigenous Irish stone, Eric transforms Connemara marble, Kilkenny limestone and Wicklow granite into napkin rings, cheese boards, cake & salad servers and giftware. Divine Dublin-Made Designs Yvonne Ryan is an Irish designer based in Dublin. Her fashion jewellery collection was launched in 2005 followed, in 2012, with her eponymous fine jewellery line at Arnotts and Loulerie under the brand Yvonne Ryan Jewellery. Her creations have a strong sculptural quality to them, inspired in part by talents handed down to her from her sculptor father. By the very nature of their materials, Eric’s products have become a touchstone to ancient Ireland. Eric recently produced a marble table for the EU presidential rooms in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels. Yvonne works in silver and gold, as well as diamonds. Her stacking rings offer wearers the opportunity to add a fashion element to their fine jewellery, building a collection that is interchangeable. Stand number A44 The pieces are contemporary but quite classical. Every piece is wearable and comfortable. “I reuse silver and waste is recycled and re-melted where possible in my Ballsbridge studio,” explains Yvonne. Stand number 171 yvonneryan.ie Decorative Art Portlaoise-based goldsmith, Helena Malone, is a graduate of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s Jewellery & Goldsmithing Skills and Design Course. She launched her first collection in 2007. The recipient of numerous accolades including the acclaimed RDS National Crafts Competition and the Crafts Council of Ireland Future Makers Practitioner Award, Helena’s designs have a strong sculptural aesthetic. “Inspired primarily by nature, and its inherent structural balance, I am drawn to colour, interesting textures and unusual stones & pearls,’ she enthuses. “I continuously push the boundaries of my skills. My designs are feminine, with an edge.” 4 hennessyandbyrne.com Weaving Tradition Cushendale Woollen Mills has been in operation in Graignamanagh, Co. Kilkenny since the mid 1800s. Philip Cushen, whose forefathers founded the mill all those years ago, oversees every step of the process. The raw wool from Irish producers is washed in pure water supplied by the river Duiske. The yarn, fibres and fabrics are all dyed in-house. The wool is carded and spun to create a yarn strong enough for weaving or knitting. The woven fabric is then washed, felted, dyed or brushed to give the desired fabric effect. The results are Cushendale’s stunning ranges of colourful throws, rugs and knitting yarns. We are delighted to announce that home grown Irish companies supported by the recognised Guaranteed Irish symbol have almost doubled their attendance at this year’s National Crafts And Design Fair – Ireland’s flagship event for craft & design excellence. Shannonbridge Pottery Share tea and cakes among your family and friends with Shannonbridge Pottery’s eclectic, lively and classic tea set creations, which bring an upliftingly colourful twist to the traditional afternoon tea. Our greatly increased presence here today is wholly thanks to you - the Irish consumer - and your outstanding response to last year’s “Shop for Ireland” campaign. You voted with your pockets, you shopped with Irish companies and you created Irish jobs. So thank you for your support. The score of diverse and enterprising Irish companies participating at the show hail from locations right across Ireland where they provide employment directly in their home towns and parishes. The wages they pay are spent locally, in turn supporting even more Irish jobs. The taxes they pay aid the economic recovery. Their continued efforts and successes give hope, encouragement and confidence to the other budding entrepreneurs around them in their home towns. These companies are Ireland’s true green shoots of revival. As a discerning consumer you have the most vital role of all to play in Irish job creation by wielding the power of your shopping basket. Our research shows that if every family spent just E4 per week more on Irish products then we would have 6,000 new jobs. The firms you see here today are backed by the Guaranteed Irish symbol which has unprecedented 85% recognition among Irish buyers. Our symbol is the best guarantee to you that the money you spend in Ireland stays here in Ireland and that it creates and maintains badly needed Irish jobs in times when so many of our young people are not coming home for Christmas. Consider too that up to one third of all Irish annual retail spending takes place at Christmas - the potential impact of your own festive shopping basket on Irish employment is huge. We invite you to visit each and every one of the Guaranteed Irish supported exhibitors here today. Cast your eye over what they have on offer. We are confident that you’ll discover that our range of Irish craft and product speaks for itself at all levels of excellence. Silverstone Dimensions For a unique and extra special Christmas gift for a loved one why not start with a smoulderingly stylish piece of handcrafted jewelry in ebony, silver, gold and semi precious stones from Cork’s own Silverstone Dimensions.
