‘The
Playhouse
taught me
to think’
At the end of May we bring
back the city-wide festival
of European art and theatre,
neat14. Further details of all
the events and venues to be
announced in March, but this
brochure gives you a taste of
the wide range of things to
come. Page 6
We hope you like what you see in this
brochure and that it will encourage you
to spend time being entertained at the
Playhouse this year.
‘Good live theatre
has something
magical about it; it
is emotive, thought
provoking, inclusive’
A highlight this Spring is our
new co-production of The
Threepenny Opera, a funny
and hard-hitting musical that
gave the world, among others,
the song Mack the Knife.
As well as being a knock-out
show, co-directed by Jenny
Sealey (who co-directed the
London Paralympic Opening
ceremony) and Peter Rowe,
this version of The Threepenny
Opera also has the distinction
of being a fully-integrated
cast and production. With
a diverse group of brilliant
performers/musicians, every
show will be captioned,
signed and audio described.
Page 4
‘Such a
welcoming,
inspiring and
exciting place
to be’
This Autumn we present
three plays as part of our
Time and Memory season, by
J. B. Priestley, Tom Stoppard
and Peter Arnott. Each
spans two time periods and
explores the impact the past
has on the present and the
future. Pages 10 – 14.

In a year that marks
significant anniversaries
relating to the start of both
world wars, we continue
our commitment to new
writing with a timely
new play by Peter Arnott.
Propaganda Swing explores
the extraordinary true story
of how Nazi propaganda
corrupted and made use
of jazz music in wartime
Germany. Page 12. In the
Neville Studio we will be
programming new events and
activities that reflect on the
themes of the season in many
different ways.
‘At times when I felt
my worst, I sat in the
Playhouse and filled
myself up again’
Fiona Buffini, our new
Associate Director, is
expanding the participation
work we offer both in the
theatre and around the
region: work that we know
means a huge amount to
generations of people, and
which continues to offer
life-changing opportunities to
take part, learn and develop
new skills. Details are in
the middle of this brochure
(pages 18 – 22). Also, look out
for news of a huge, city-wide
project that will pay unique
tribute to Nottingham’s
greatest Olympians, Torvill
and Dean, 30 years after their
triumphant Bolero ice-dance
in Sarajevo.
‘It’s the best
place in the
world, it’s
made me
who I am’
Amongst a rich variety of
visiting work, we are offering
one of our most diverse
dance seasons this year,
with a fascinating range of
performers and contemporary
styles. Fabulous Beast’s
Rite of Spring is a particular
highlight. Page 33
‘Incredible
opportunities for
young people and
budding actors’
We look back on 2013 and
our 50th anniversary year
with huge pride; record
attendances, so much positive
audience and critical feedback
and our new participation
companies going from
strength to strength. Our
co-production of 1984 has
just moved on to the Almeida
Theatre in London before an
expected run in the West End,
and The Kite Runner returns
by popular demand before a
national tour. We received a
generous capital grant from
the Arts Council which will
allow us, over the next year,
to upgrade this building
to make it cheaper, and
therefore more sustainable to
operate for the next 50 years.
But we also ended the year
with multiple threats to our
core funding.
‘It’s a hub of
creativity &
activity for
all ages’
In difficult financial times,
every organisation must
work extra hard to give its
customers what they want;
when the Nottinghamshire
County Council announced
proposals to remove 100% of
their grant to us (undecided
at the time of going to press),
we were overwhelmed with
the number of heartfelt
responses we received,
from people of every age,
and from every part of the
region. You talked about this
theatre with real passion
and concern; it was the place
where you learned to think, to
communicate, find your voice
and understand the world.
This is your Playhouse, so please
never stop telling us what you think.
Text headings on these
pages taken from audience
responses to the Playhouse
in 2013/14.

‘An important theatre
telling stories
significant to city,
county and country’
We believe that we do still
give you – our audience
members, participants,
sponsors and other
supporters – what you want,
and that we continue to be
worth funding and fighting
for. The next few months
will be challenging ones,
as longer-term funding
decisions are made for all
arts organisations, and your
support is so important to us.

A Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company, Graeae Theatre Company,
Birmingham Repertory Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich and West Yorkshire Playhouse production
by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill
When times are tough who is the real criminal?
From the writer of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, The Caucasian
Chalk Circle and Mother Courage this musical is brought bang
up-to-date and given an anarchic twist in this exciting new
production directed by New Wolsey Theatre’s Peter Rowe and
Graeae’s Jenny Sealey MBE. Jenny is best-known for codirecting the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony.
Imagine a world where evil goes unpunished and lowly souls
remain on the poverty line. London’s most notorious criminal,
Macheath, has recently married Polly, the daughter of Jonathan
Peachum, leader of the beggars.
‘It’s a painting done in crimson; you could sign it Mack the Knife’
With well-known songs such as Mack the Knife and Pirate
Jenny, and music played on stage by the actors themselves, this
is one riotous show you’ll be begging to see!
All performances include live audio description and a creative
combination of BSL interpretation and captioning.
English translation of the dialogue by Robert David MacDonald.
English translation of the lyrics by Jeremy Sams.
Original German text based on Elisabeth Hauptmann’s German translation
of John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera.

THE SECOND MINUTE
by Andy Barrett
Nottingham’s second European Arts and Theatre festival
Welcome to neat14.
Our first festival, neat11, took the
theme “We Are Europe” as the basis for a
programme that showcased Nottingham
as a culturally vigorous European city.
With neat14 “Europe Then and Now” is
our provocation, the ‘then’ being 1914.
Once again events will be City-wide in
traditional and found spaces, working
with our Nottingham partners to invite
local and European artists to bring
Nottingham alive for 10 days, with
theatre and performance from Croatia,
Belarus, France, Ireland, Spain, Albania,
Poland and Germany sharing the bill with
work from Hyson Green, the Meadows
and St Ann’s.
Complementing the core programme
there will be talks, exhibitions and
films, as well as a programme of free
performances that will ensure that this
is a festival for all. Full details will be
available in March; here is a taster of
work being presented at the Playhouse.

During the First World War around nineteen
thousand mailbags crossed the channel
every single day and the art of letter writing
enveloped the country, as people of all ages
and from all classes tried to keep in touch with
sons, brothers, husbands and lovers. To mark
the centenary of the First World War, Andy
Barrett has worked with the letter collection
from the archive of the Sherwood Foresters
regiment to create an uplifting new show
that weaves together heroic, comic, and heartbreaking tales of soldiers and families through
their own words. Ticket £9, Concessions £7 and

The Seagull
by Anton Chekhov
A huge hit in Europe, The Seagull brings
Chekhov’s classic story of thwarted passion
and crushed ambition alive for modern
audiences, the production is bold, funny,
poignant and captures the beating heart of this
great play.
On the one hand there’s a comedy, three female
roles, six male roles, four acts, a landscape
(a view of a lake), much conversation about
literature, little action, and five tons of love; and
on the other there are our daily losses translated
into famous dialogues and sentences.’

no other. Three performers and three laptop

journey through a tangle of relationships and
technologies, all set against reactive objects,

BOLERO
by Michael Pinchbeck
An assassin raises his gun.
A conductor raises his baton.
A piece of music that lasts 17 minutes has begun.
In 1928, Maurice Ravel wrote Bolero in
Paris. In 1984, Jayne Torvill and Christopher
Dean danced to it at the Winter Olympics
in Sarajevo. Eight years later the stadium
where they won gold was bombed. Working
with the music as a bridge between these
two stories, Nottingham writer and theatre
maker Michael Pinchbeck (The Ashes) takes
a journey from Paris to Sarajevo, from 1914
to 1994, from the First World War to the
Bosnian War. Six performers from the UK,
Bosnia & Herzegovina and Germany, and a
local community cast of thirty weave together
a devised biography of Bolero. Ticket £13,
Concessions £11 and under 26s £6
Bolero is a Making Tracks project developed by Theatre Writing
Partnership. Supported by the National Lottery through Arts
Council England, British Council, Sarajevo War Theatre, ODA
Theatre (Pristina) and Nottingham Playhouse.

TIME & MEMORY SEASON
TIME AND
THE CONWAYS
by J.B. Priestley
If the future is broken, can the past be fixed?
1919. A World War has just ended. A seemingly happy family
gather to celebrate a birthday party. Eighteen years later, we see
that the future is far from the one they imagined that night.
What has determined the future?
Priestly offers us many answers; complacency and class
arrogance, their own mistakes and the interference of others
have all led to the darkening of their lives. Beneath the surface
of this simple family story, Priestly explores the political and
social history of Britain between the wars, and the nature of
time itself.

How did the Devil have the best tunes?
fri 3 – SAT 18 OCT
The jazz scene in 1930’s Berlin was one of the most vibrant and
exciting in the world – a time captured brilliantly in the musical,
Cabaret. But what happened to those talented singers and
musicians as the Nazis’ grip tightened?

Propaganda Swing throws a spotlight on the gripping true story
of ‘Charlie and his Orchestra’. Featuring a fantastic swing band
live on stage, this enthralling show reveals the characters behind
the story of how some of the greatest German jazz musicians
of the day entered into a Faustian pact with the Fascists – they
could keep playing their beloved music at the price of seeing it
corrupted by evil.
The captivating combination of WWII intrigue and drama set
against a backdrop of glitz, glamour and Big Band swagger,
makes Propaganda Swing a must-see show this autumn.

TIME & MEMORY SEASON
ARCADIA
by Tom Stoppard
A serious comedy about science, sex and
landscape gardening.
1809: Lust, longing and literary rivalry seize the inhabitants
of Sidley Park, a grand house in Derbyshire, where proposals
for the remodelling of the landscape are being contemplated.
In the midst of this, the teenage Thomasina Coverly is making
a scientific discovery that could change the way people
understand the world.
The present: Rivalry once again seizes the inhabitants of Sidley
Park, as academics Bernard and Hannah compete to unpick
the historic secrets of the estate and its earlier occupants. Who
was the mysterious hermit? Do the scrawlings in a young lady’s
notebook show her to be a scientific genius? What – if anything
– was Lord Byron up to?
Arcadia is an exuberantly funny, thought-provoking and
touching masterpiece which has dazzled audiences from the
National Theatre to Broadway.
‘Tom Stoppard’s richest, most ravishing
comedy to date, a play of wit, intellect,
language, brio and…emotion.’

Response to a previous Barnardo’s project:
‘What I really appreciated the most
were the high standards you set for
the young people. The young people
were challenged, given a real sense of
inclusion and most importantly their
parents and teachers could see what
they were really capable of. I really
believe they have all learned valuable
skills from this’

Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre
The Rite of Spring & Petrushka
The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s
thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast
in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky
music of the same name. The imagery in The Rite
of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual.
The rhythmic elements of the music are played
out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is
sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped.
By contrast Petrushka is white and bright and
light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days
are conjured as couples dance for approval from
their ancestors.
Photo: Chris Nash
Performed by an international cast of 13,
both works are theatrical interpretations of
the original music that created such outrage
and excitement in the early 20th century.
Contains nudity, sexual imagery and smoking

Bin Men
What Became of
the Red Shoes?
By Mike Kenny
Don and Sam are bin men with dreams. Big
dreams! They want to save the world and they
want to have fun doing it!
Bin men see everything we throw away – and
we throw away so many things. With Don and
Sam around we may just need to think again.
They can find a use for anything.
Written by multi-award winning writer
Mike Kenny, this story of recycling and
transforming is told with live music, puppetry
and lots of fun.
Granny Flo’s attic is full of old junk…or is it?
One rainy day her curious granddaughter Ruby
explores it and discovers forgotten treasures,
including an old photograph of a girl wearing a
pair of shoes which are mysteriously...red! Her
imagination is sparked and she embarks on a
quest to find the red shoes.
This brilliantly imaginative, award-winning
show features original music and dance, and
stars Panto favourite Rebecca Little.
