A Message from the Founder
Today
I saw a few bright bursts of
green emerging from the bulbs I planted
last fall. Days are getting longer. The sunlight hue is a bit bolder. Spring is here.
This time of year, I’m reminded of a quote
from founding board member, Flavia
Weedn, who writes, “In the depth of winter lies the inevitable promise of spring.”
And so, spring is not just a season for
Dream Foundation, it’s a symbol of our
service.
Maryann had a simple dream: to have a
comfortable chair in the main room, so as
to enjoy the company of her son, husband
and dear friends.
It’s a season that marks the anniversary of
the passing of Timmothy Palmer, my inspiration behind Dream Foundation, who left
this earth prematurely at the age of 33. It’s
also time to reflect on how special it is to
be in the presence of those we serve.
During my visit with Maryann I was
touched by her husband’s deep concern
for her happiness, and his eagerness to fill her time—moment by moment—with whatever joy he could.
I was moved that, in the midst of her final days, Maryann was concerned that I thank each
of you for caring about her. “It’s just absolutely incredible that people think beyond themselves,” she whispered, her eyes filling with tears. “I’ve never really had that before.”
Maryann passed away soon after, but her family reminded me they’ll never forget the
happiness you bestowed upon her…and she upon us.
In the last several months, we’ve lost many dreamers and dear friends of the organization. Yet in the darkness of their loss comes the promise of beautiful memories to keep
our hearts full. Their legacies live on in our mission and the hope that resides with our
future dreamers as they seek a final wish.
This newsletter represents just a smattering of the dreams, moving acts of kindness,
and sincere expressions of gratitude we witness every day. The end stages of illness are
sometimes referred to the winter of one’s life. Regardless of the time of year, we aim to
maintain a spring-like sense of hope to our service—igniting a light of love where there
is darkness.

(ICA) Seal of Excellence. The award goes to charities that have,
upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document
and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest
standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost
effectiveness. It is estimated that fewer than five percent of charities
reviewed meet or exceed these standards.

Have So Bravely Served

She is the sister of Dream Foundation’s
Communications Manager, Kelly Sweda.
I had the honor
of being part of something that will leave an impression on my life forever. I
photographed a marvelous man’s final dream: to share
his deep sense of patriotism with his family at a memorial service marking the 10th anniversary of 9/11. He is
an honored soldier, having served multiple tours of duty
at home and abroad. He’s also living his final days, as
the effects of Lou Gehrig’s Disease overcome him. His
name is Ernest.
I’ll never forget my first glance of the sergeant. Fully uniformed, sitting tall and proud in his wheelchair, he maneuvered himself down the center aisle of the ceremony
to his place at the front of the crowd. From where I sat,
I looked up at him. I watched him like a hawk, scanning
his frame from behind my camera’s lens. I read his face
and the sporadic movements of his body. Although he
cannot speak, I felt like I knew exactly what he was saying. During the ceremony, Ernest was recognized for his
service to our country and his fearless fight for his life.
In that moment, it hit me. This man, father, husband,
brother, solider is the epitome of bravery. Brave enough
to face down war. Brave enough to accept his life’s fate.
Brave enough to show up at the event, a true patriot.
There were tears, mine included. As the sergeant and
his family cried together, the crowd of people behind
us cried, too. Then they rose to their feet and gave him
applause. And then there were smiles.

Leaving the ceremony was bittersweet.
I knew I’d helped document a moment
in this man’s life that he had wished for
above all else. But I couldn’t help but be
sad knowing I wouldn’t have another opportunity to see him, or photograph the
truth in his face, the honesty in his eyes
and the pride, honor and bravery that
poured from his heart.

Dreams Come True
Believe in Wizard Magic
Bedridden, and with a terminal prognosis of fewer than three weeks, 44-year-old father
and brain cancer patient, Paul, of California, had one final, passionate dream: to view the
last Harry Potter movie with his 13-year-old son, Davis. Throughout Davis’ childhood,
the connection he and his dad had formed around the Harry Potter books and movies
strengthened their father-son bond, especially as their lives became uprooted by cancer.
Too ill to visit the movie theater, Paul appealed to Dream Foundation to help bring the
movie to him. Thanks to Naomi Reeves in Jeff Bridges’ office; her uncle, Robert Friedman, of Summit Entertainment; and dedicated Warner Bros. executives, including Dan
Fellman and Don Tannenbaum; Paul’s dream came true with a special in-home viewing
of the film. It was an epic finale on both the adventures of Harry Potter, and for Paul and
his son.
It Must Be
(Puppy) Love
You’ve Got a Friend
91-year-old Virginia, of California, was suffering from heart disease. She lived in the hottest, windiest part of the Southern California desert, in a tiny mobile home. Her fragile
body may have been failing—with doctors saying six months tops—but her mind was
sharp and her eyes sparkled. Her dream was for companionship. Dream Foundation President and Founder, Thomas Rollerson, spent the day with Ginny, bringing such goodies as new earphones for her
television, a hand-knit blanket, a
scrumptious lobster dinner and
her favorite—coconut cream
pie. He also announced Dream
Foundation would be providing
her with weekend caregivers so
that she could stay in her home.
“I’m so grateful for everything
that everybody did for me,” she
said, reflecting on her special
day with her new friend. “What
a surprise! It’s marvvvvvelous!!!”
Jene, 19, of Washington, was battling aggressive bone cancer, and had been given
five months to live. She dreamed for the
companionship of a puppy—for the joy it
would bring her, as well as the love and delight it would impart on her family. Thanks
to Dream Foundation and the dedicated
team at Get Hitched, Give Hope (GHGH),
Jene’s dream for puppy love came true.
GHGH volunteers, Barbie Hull and Christopher Smith, delivered the tri-colored
hound mix to Jene’s home, complete with
balloons, doggy toys and hugs all around.
The smiles and laughter exchanged as
little Boomer bounded around the house
were priceless, and it was evident to everyone he would fill each room—and each
heart—with immeasurable happiness.
“Our days were filled with sightseeing
and lots of beaches—the evenings
consisted of shopping, dinners out and
renting movies. There was no discussion
of my cancer, and I’m happy to say
I was able—almost—to keep up with
the kids. I know in my heart they
will always remember this vacation.

Dreams Come True
Every Thorn
Has Its Rose
Thirty-seven-year-old Greg, of Michigan,
was healthy until he fell ill with multiple
sclerosis at 24. The disease hit hard, causing immediate paralysis. Mostly bedbound and requiring round-the-clock
care, Greg lived in a nursing home—and
aside from twice-weekly visits from his sister and brother-in-law, spent much of his
time alone. A lifelong fan of rock musician,
Bret Michaels, Greg wished for a phone
conversation with the artist—if for nothing
more than to thank him for touching his life
with music.
With the help of our friends, Dream Foundation contacted Bret, who surprised
Greg with a phone call and an invitation to
meet. It happened Bret would be playing a
concert nearby, so Greg’s family and caregivers took him there, where he met his
idol in person. Back at the nursing home,
Greg became a celebrity in his own right,
gushing when he spoke of his dream and
the imprint it left on his heart.

Cowboys Have Wishes, Too
Sylvester, 46, of Texas, was suffering the effects of metastatic lung cancer. A passionate
and lifelong Dallas Cowboys football fan, he dreamed of sitting in the stands with his
fiance and cheering on his favorite team. Dream Foundation sent the couple to Dallas for
the weekend, where they didn’t just watch the game, but enjoyed a luxury suite at the
Adolphus Hotel and explored the vibrant city. Having never set foot in a hotel before,
Sylvester was humbled, immensely grateful, and made every second count.
“Thank you so much for making my wish come true,” he wrote Dream Foundation afterwards. “I’ve always wanted to see my Cowboys, and I had the time of my life…especially
spending it with someone I truly love.”

exist that week, and they were finally
free to let loose and have fun.”

Dreams Come True
Relief from
the Heat
Cornelia, 68, of Georgia, had a prognosis
of fewer than six months in her battle with
lung disease. The heat and humidity she
endured each Atlanta summer was compounded by shortness of breath and overall fatigue. When her air conditioner broke,
Cornelia feared she’d be forced from her
home—losing her independence and the
comfort of her own surroundings. With
help from her Evercare Hospice social
worker, she contacted Dream Foundation,
relaying her need for a new unit.
A Trip to the Happiest Place
on Earth for the Holidays
Thirty-four-year-old Shawn, of Pennsylvania, was a single mother of eight-year-old twins;
she was also losing her battle with breast cancer. Wreaked by thoughts of leaving her
children motherless and desperate to bring some happiness into their lives, she dreamed
of taking her family to Orlando at Christmastime, where they could experience holiday
magic at the theme parks, and make memories they’d treasure forever. Using discounted
Disney World tickets and donated passes to Universal Studios and Sea World
Orlando, Dream Foundation sent Shawn and her family to Florida, where they experienced everything they’d wished for, and enjoyed a much-needed reprieve from illness.
“It is a blessing to have a company care and take the time to show it,” Shawn wrote the
foundation afterwards. “I will never forget the smiles that were on my children’s faces.”
“When you are told your illness is terminal it creates a cloud of sadness
around you and makes you think of all the things you thought you had more
time to do. It saddens me to realize—that with my limited income—I will
not be able to make my last wish come true...that is, without the help
of a wonderful organization like Dream Foundation.”
“I cannot in any way tell you how much I
appreciate your choice to assist me,” she
wrote after it arrived. “We continue to
have days of temperatures above 90. Most
people think ‘Life Savers’ are a circle, and
are candy or a floatation device. I feel that
mine is a square box. It’s ordinary but such
a mandatory temperature control for anyone with advanced COPD.”

Our fulfillment of a final dream is not just a
singular action. It’s a community collaboration that includes
caregivers, corporate partners, staff and volunteers.
It’s a process that ensures resources go to those who are
most in need, and that meaningful experiences are had by
the dreamers and their families.

It comes as no surprise that Genentech—our incredible Partner in Dreams—found another creative, inspiring and healthy way to support the families we serve.
Inspired by The Biggest Loser television show, team
member Chad Smith formulated a campaign to raise
funds and lose weight at the same time. With over 40
colleagues participating and soliciting sponsorships
for pounds lost, Team Genentech/Avastin raised over
$12,000 and lost a combined 400 pounds!
“Our team takes great pride in getting involved in projects that are uniquely representative of our company, and this is one of them,” Chad said. “Ultimately, the money we raised

When longtime Dream Foundation supporter and avid runner, Melissa Marsted,
was thinking of a fun way to engage her
family in philanthropy and give back
to their community, the first thing she
thought of was the Santa Barbara Marathon. She divided the 26.2-mile run into
three parts—one for herself, and one for
each of her two sons—and before she
knew it, they were off and running! Backed

The Mighty Tuks
September 2011 • India •
Raised $17,000
Jarryd Commerford, Simon Linsley, and
Kristian Faldbakken took their support of
dreams to the extreme, participating in the
Rickshaw Run, a 3,000-plus race across India in a three-wheeled tin can called a “tuk
tuk.” Calling themselves the Mighty Tuks,
the trio strove to raise $14,000 – enough
to adopt one dream per day of the twoweek raucous adventure. In the end, they
surpassed that by bringing in $17,000!
As one of four selected partners for the year, Dream Foundation received a touching public service
announcement (PSA), produced by FOX
Sports and featuring heartfelt appeals
by sportscasters, Charles Davis and Gus
Johnson, and our own, Jeff Bridges. Not
only did the PSA—and earnest on-air
mentions—help us raise funds for dreams,
the partnership generated tremendous
awareness of our mission, connecting
families in need with our services.

NEW YORK — Chaz Fudge, Jr. has come
from Philadelphia, where he now lives, to
pay his respects, he said, to the people
killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in
lower Manhattan.
He also came to say goodbye.
Fudge, 51, has stage four lung cancer.
Translated into time, doctors say he has
another six months to a year to live.
Returning to the World Trade Center site
for the first time since the attacks, he said,
would help bring some measure of closure.
“I wanted to see it, feel their spirit,” he said
of the 2,753 people killed in New York City
that clear September day. “I wanted to say
‘thank you.’ “
Fudge, an analyst with Metropolitan Telecommunications, was attending a meeting
on the 82nd floor of the north tower when
the first plane slammed into the building,
11 floors above.
He was hit on the shoulder and incapacitated by falling debris. A firewall, he said,
saved him and his colleagues from death
that day. A firefighter would carry him
down to safety.
But Fudge’s injuries stayed with him for
months. He broke several bones and was
in and out of hospitals for treatment. His
wife, a teacher at Edison High School, also
helped nurture him back to relative health.
A little more than two years after the attacks, though, she developed breast can-

cer. She died in August 2004.
Within a year, Fudge’s father and mother
also passed away and Fudge was left to
care for his three sons, including then-13year-old Chaz Fudge III, on his own.
Then, last year, doctors at Mount Sinai
Medical Center in New York diagnosed
his cancer, which they said was probably
caused by asbestos he inhaled while inside
the burning tower.
But a final reckoning would have to wait.
Fudge had vowed to help put young Chaz
through college.
Fulfilling the promise of his son’s education gives him the will to battle.
“I’m obsessed with that,” he said. “I’m not
rushing, but I’m asking God for that longevity.”
Wearing a dark turtleneck, blue blazer and
overcoat, Fudge walked to a corner of the
South Pool, accompanied by Chaz III, now
21; Joe Daniels, president of the memorial foundation; and Thomas Rollerson,
president of the California-based Dream
Foundation, which paid for and facilitated
Fudge’s trip.

10th Annual Celebration of Dreams
Last November, Dream Foundation held its 10th annual Celebration of Dreams gala at
the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, with a Donna Karan Spring 2012 runway
show presented by Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks’ president, Ron Frasch. Fashion icon,
Donna Karan, received the Founder’s Humanitarian Award, presented to her by her dear
friend, Barbra Streisand. An event unlike any other, Celebration of Dreams combines
high fashion on and off the runway, world-class entertainment, and creative cuisine, all
benefiting Dream Foundation.
The evening included donated performances by Grammy Award-winning artist, Macy
Gray; recording artist and American Idol finalist, Pia Toscano; Naya Rivera and Amber
Riley, of Glee; recording artist, Jackson Guthy; and So You Think You Can Dance dancers,
Anya Garnis, Kathryn McCormick and Robert Roldan.

the foundation.

Leave a legacy of dreams
As a friend of Dream Foundation, you’ve already been touched and moved by our mission of providing dreams to special people in need. Many of you have made generous
donations to make those dreams happen.
But what about the future? By doing something very simple now, you can help ensure
an ongoing “legacy of dreams” for future generations and your family name.
If you remember Dream Foundation in your will or revocable trust, you will leave a
legacy that will continue our important work far into the future. Bequests of every size
build our future financial strength and sustainability.
There are many reasons to include a charitable gift for Dream Foundation

“I give $20,000 to Dream Foundation” or “I give 10% of my estate

and cards handmade by local children, representing such schools and organizations as
National Charity League (NCL), Montecito Union School, Mountain View School and
Montecito YMCA.

Families; Montecito Union School fourth graders; National Charity League and
Youth Advisory Council (YAC) volunteers; Lynette Hall, Jodi Fishman, Debbie Darke;
and everyone whose efforts led to the successful delivery of 275 potted plants over the
holidays to area seniors in need of cheer!

Nearly 40 percent of our dream recipients have
young children at home. Coping with the impending loss of a parent—and the intense emotional,
physical and financial strain terminal illness has on
a family—may well be the most difficult challenge
a child can face. Dream Foundation’s Toy Program provides age-appropriate toys for
dream recipients to give their children, allowing them to share happiness and smiles
when illness has brought so much pain.
