Getting Around the Yorkshire Dales
Getting Around the Yorkshire Dales
You don’t need to use a car to travel
around most parts of the Yorkshire Dales.
There are lots of alternative, greener ways
to get about including walking, cycling,
and taking the train or bus.
T his leaflet gives a brief overview of public transport
services in the Dales and how to find out more about
the many services available. Overleaf you’ll find a handy
map showing the main bus and train routes in the Dales,
which you can use to plan days out.
When it comes to discovering the special landscape of
the Yorkshire Dales, slower travel is usually the most
enjoyable and rewarding. There are better views from
the higher seats of a bus or train, and no worries about
navigating narrow country roads or finding suitable safe
parking places. On a local bus you are part of the
community, supporting transport services which are a
local lifeline, and going through villages and to places
easily bypassed in the car. You can enjoy a pint (or
two!) of locally-brewed ale at one of many excellent
inns without endangering your own life or that of
others, but above all you are reducing your carbon
footprint by travelling more sustainably.
Buses
Trains
There are a number of useful railway services in the Dales.
A day out on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway is something
not to be missed, and there’s no better way of discovering the
western Dales than by leaving the train at one of several
intermediate stations, perhaps for a station-to-station walk
through some of Britain’s most dramatic scenery.
Other scenic rail lines are equally worth discovering. The
Skipton-Lancaster line along the southern edge of the Dales,
and the restored Wensleydale Railway between Leeming Bar,
Bedale, Leyburn and Redmire, offer fine scenery and walking
opportunities, whilst the Embsay to Bolton Abbey Railway in
the south links these two stations with a weekend steam
heritage service.

Foot and Pedal Power!
The excellent DalesBus network through the Yorkshire Dales
National Park and Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty offers wonderful opportunities for sightseeing and
walking.
DalesBus gives you true freedom to plan a huge range of
linear walks - for example, along the Pennine Way or Dales
Way long distance paths, as well as many other cross-dale
walks. If you are using a car, it often makes sense to park it in
an official car park, catch the bus on the outward journey and
walk back along a choice of superb routes.
You can also explore the Dales on the many guided
walks accessible from public transport organised by
the Friends of Dales Rail, the Friends of the Settle
Carlisle Line, Dalesbus Ramblers and the Yorkshire
Dales National Park Authority. They are all led
by experienced, knowledgeable local guides.

You’ll find that there are several regular bus services running
along many dales on weekdays, with extra longer-distance
buses on summer Sundays. Bus routes link up at several hubs
in the Dales - including Settle, Grassington and Leyburn,
providing a wide range of travel opportunities.
National Park and Tourist Information Centres can tell you
about the many opportunities for walking and cycling in the
Dales, ranging from a short riverside stroll or ride to more
challenging expeditions across the moors.
