Thankfully the boys recovered relatively quickly from that shock, fought back admirably and eventually showed great spirit and belief to come out worthy winners of what was a real action packed contest. The purists might question some of the defending on show, and rightly so, but I think most people will feel that they got decent value for their entrance fee. We had some excellent performances on the day and a special mention must go to Ross McPherson, who not only gave their defence a torrid time whilst helping himself to a brace but also put in a performance full of effort and courage. In life in general, it is sometimes easier to think about what you’ve ‘not got’ and ‘would like’ rather than appreciate what you actually have. That can be relevant when it comes to football and whilst we always strive for perfection, I am genuinely appreciative of this current squad of players and have a huge amount of respect for the effort they give to our club and I think right now that deserves to be put on record. As I have said before they are a really good bunch of guys to work with and I think in general they not only give us plenty of entertainment and commitment but also show me, my backroom team and everyone else at the club plenty of respect. Today we entertain Kilbirnie Ladeside who seem to be having a good season. Our league game in Ayrshire against them earlier this season was a tight affair and I don’t imagine this one will be any easier. If we can manage to secure the 3 points from this game, I think it would make it quite hard for them to bridge the gap on us in the league table therefore that is what we will looking to do. We know Kilbirnie will bring a decent size support with them so please get behind our lads again and give them as much vocal backing as possible. Onwards and upwards, Billy McGhie 32 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 5 Bankies at Pollok 01/03/2014 Clydebank bounced back brilliantly from the loss of two early goals to overpower poor Pollok. Bankies’ 100 per cent record at Newlandsfield looked dead and buried as the relegation-haunted home men raced 2-0 ahead inside six minutes. A healthy crowd inside the ground were still getting over the shock of the pie stall being closed when Pollok scored. Josh Horne stood over a free-kick 30 yards out and with keeper Robert Hamilton expecting a cross the player glided a shot into his top right-hand corner. Bankies’ bad start was to continue on six minutes when Graeme McLaren headed home from a corner but that was as good as it got from Pollok. The visitors finally woke up and with Vinnie Berry pulling the strings in midfield and widemen Ian Gold and Ciaran McElroy looking to run at defenders they started to take hold of the game. However, their way back into the match was given a helping hand in 19 minutes by Mark McLennan who hauled down McElroy in the box and Ross McPherson coolly sent Johnny Murdoch the wrong way from the spot. McLennan was booked for his troubles and Bankies midfielder Tommy Martin was next to be cautioned when he stopped Lok’s Jamie Watson illegally as he broke forward. McPherson’s strength had caused Lok problems and he nearly levelled after a neat turn and shot that was blocked then four minutes before the break a Berry shot from close range was saved superbly by Murdoch. There was controversy right on half-time when McLaren was short with a header back to his keeper and McPherson seemed to be clipped as he tried to cash in. It would have been a straight red for last man McLaren but the ref waved play on and Bankies coach Budgie McGhie was spoken to for his protests. www.weddellsgarage.co.uk email [email protected] The second half resumed with Bankies on top and it was no surprise when the equaliser arrived in 52 minutes. Berry was tripped just outside the box and the ref awarded a free-kick . Ross McPherson stepped up to drill the ball around the wall and low past Murdoch. Five minutes later the turnaround was complete and it was a nightmare for the Lok defence who failed to deal with a straightforward corner. Berry’s ball into the middle cleared everyone including Murdoch and skipper Austin McCann guided the ball into an unguarded net for his first Bankies goal and the easiest he’ll ever score. Hamilton raced quickly off his line to block from Watson as Pollok briefly rallied but Bankies were in control and Willie Howie and Kieran McAleenan were both booked for fouls on Berry as the home side clung on. McPherson blasted a great chance over after skinning his marker then his deflected shot was tipped to safety by Murdoch. Bankies finally got the fourth they deserved when sub Joe Andrew hooked the ball into the path of left-back Andy Paterson and he controlled on his chest before volleying a cracker high past Murdoch from just inside the box. There was just time for Kevin Bradley to make the scoreline tighter than it was when he neatly found the net after the ball broke to him in the box. Paul Jain 6 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 31 From The Boardroom Our recent back-to-back league wins have put us in a strong position to challenge for a top four finish and edge us away from the wrong end of the table. The Premier Division is a terrific league but to my mind it is far too small. You could argue that this makes it far more competitive and interesting and there is no doubt you'd have a point. But I also think that it makes many of the top Junior clubs far too vulnerable to the threat of relegation. Beith took the drop last year and this season Pollok and Arthurlie find themselves in a survival battle. I have to say it is in no-one's interests that such illustrious names in the Junior game crash out of the top flight. I favour a bigger league. Adding two more sides to the Premier Division would increase revenue and make the league a lot less cut-throat. The added revenue would be welcomed by all. At our own club, we are in the incredible position that today, March 8th, sees our first league match at home in THREE months. A quarter of a year between matches where you keep the full gate receipts. And in that time wages, bills and all sorts of other expenses have to be paid. Thankfully, events like tonight's Sportsman's Dinner generates cash to pay our way. The dinner is a sell-out, with 200 tickets sold. Staging the event is a team effort and I'm glad to say everything is set for another great night. Before then, though, we have today's opponents to entertain. Kilbirnie Ladeside are one of those great names in the Junior game and it is good to see them back in the top flight. Hopefully both sides will produce an exciting match for both sets of fans to enjoy. Please give the players your best support. However the Blasties have not conceded four in a league match all season and Clydebank have only scored four or more twice so it is a long shot and highly unlikely that this scenario will pan out this afternoon . The joint management team of Mark Crilly and Stephen Swift have had a very good start to their managerial careers in the top flight after bringing Kilbirnie Ladeside into the top division as runners-up last term. They have guided their side to hold a top four place since September, no mean feat for a newly promoted club. Currently sitting in third place in the table the Valefield Park team have had some impressive victories under their belts this season beating Cumnock 4-1 at Townhead Park and Petershill 5-1 at Petershill Park. Earlier this term the sides met at “The Vale” and shared the spoils following a scoreless draw so this afternoon has all the hallmarks of being a tough game for Budgie McGhie and his men. Clydebank have a 100% winning record over the Blasties here at Holm Park and have yet to concede a goal against them after 1-0 and 3-0 successes. 12 CLYDEBANK FC OFFICIAL MATCH PROGRAMME SEASON 2013-14 West of Scotland Sectional Central Cup League Cup League Cup 2013-14 Career Player St Sb Gl St Sb Gl St Sb Gl St Sb Gl St Sb Gl St Sb App Gl St Sb App Gl Andrew, Joe Bell, Paul Berry, Vincent Burns, Kieran 10 6 9 Campbell, Jamie Campbell, Liam Campbell, Ross Gold, Ian 8 2 7 8 Hamilton, Robert Harvie, Ross Martin, Tommy McCann, Austin 12 McCready, Craig McElroy, Ciaran McPherson, Ross Morris, Michael 1 11 10 1 5 2 3 Paterson, Andy Pearson, Reece Russell, Marc Strachan, Adam Walker, Scott 8 2 6 5 14 2 6 2 Wilson, Chris Own Goals 7 1 Goal Totals 4 4 1 2 3 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 3 4 3 1 4 1 4 2 2 3 5 5 6 3 1 1 1 3 3 1 1 17 8 14 1 13 1 17 2 1 1 1 15 10 25 6 38 16 54 11 6 17 46 11 57 1 14 1 15 4 62 1 63 1 2 3 3 6 17 23 1 13 14 1 3 8 1 1 1 1 1 2 1 1 2 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 2 2 2 1 1 1 6 5 3 7 5 2 1 1 6 2 4 7 1 2 19 5 17 2 10 30 2 14 1 141 5 20 6 49 18 10 11 19 5 32 146 11 67 12 17 79 79 1 1 1 24 4 92 13 105 23 1 23 23 1 4 1 1 22 23 2 4 2 1 1 4 20 1 18 3 5 4 6 9 4 5 9 24 7 20 6 26 8 24 12 75 36 111 41 3 5 5 1 3 1 2 1 1 1 13 6 11 7 24 3 9 3 1 16 15 14 8 24 67 6 11 24 39 3 9 3 4 1 70 15 14 28 40 3 2 2 11 4 1 3 14 2 16 3 57 2 3 60 12 2 6 1 2 2 6 2 1 2 2 2 12 1 2 9 4 3 2 2 2 2 65 9 1 156 Bankies keeper Robert Hamilton will make his 80th appearance for the club today if selected. Sadly their supporters have been labelled with a reputation for trouble but that has never been in evidence when these two sides meet. So much so that fans of both sides are firm friends and regularly play football matches against each other, well something that resembles football matches. This fixture was originally scheduled to be played last month and the mascots of both sides were helping cement this friendship with a half-time penalty shootout which will now take place this afternoon. Can Titan the Monkey outperform KT Cat? We shall see. Clydebank have been in a rich vein of scoring form in recent weeks, much to the delight of the supporters, netting eleven in their last three games with seven of these coming in the last two league outings. Over these same three matches the team have conceded five which is a little more worrying to the Bankies faithful. On a few occasions this term the defence has lost some incredibly soft goals which has caused a great deal of consternation amongst the fans. Kilbirnie Ladeside’s form in their last three games has been a little chequered. A league defeat at Auchinleck was perhaps not unexpected but reports suggest that the 3-0 scoreline flattered the Beechwood Park side. Their other two fixtures were both in the Ayrshire Cup. A fairly comfortable 4-0 first round victory at Annbank was followed by a bit of a shock when Largs Thistle knocked them out at Valefield by the odd goal in three last weekend. Clydebank ran out 3-1 winners at Largs just a few weeks ago so it is natural for supporters to feel that their favourites should prevail this afternoon. Alas, football doesn’t follow this flawed logic and it will take an almighty effort from the players if Bankies are to come away with the three points on offer today. Blasties fans have been very happy with their side this term. Rumours were rife at the beginning of the season that Kilbirnie Ladeside had some money behind them for this season. These rumours have been strenuously denied on social media websites and classed as mischief making by supporters of teams who are perhaps a little jealous of the return to the top flight of the club “everybody loves to hate”. With 27 points already banked it is safe to say that Kilbirnie Ladeside will be in this division again next term. Indeed it is also possible for them to finish comfortably in the top six if not the top three or four. This would be seen as a magnificent achievement for a side that underwent a bit of a rebuild during the close season. This is, of course, Bankies third term in the top flight and in the previous two attempts the club has finished with a top four place and the second highest position for a Central side. This term it seems that Clydebank could end the season as the top Central team and another top four finish. At the end of September these two sides fought out an entertaining 0-0 draw at Valefield. That is the only time in the previous eight meetings that neither side has found the back of the net. The other seven encounters have mustered an impressive twenty goals so if both sides have their shooting boots on today we may be in for some goalmouth entertainment. Can Clydebank continue their winning run over the Blasties here at Holm Park? Ninety minutes of football will tell.
