Junior Ring Ceremony Senior Showcase

Editor-In-Chief
October 8 marked a new beginning for juniors, as many of them
received their rings that symbolized them officially becoming upperclassmen. The first of many
great experiences,
the 42nd Annual
Ring Ceremony,
led by class advisor Ms. Tobin, was
a great success.
Officers, Alex
Hamel, Minji Park,
Elizabeth McKinley, Nick Reveille,
and Hannah Batio
helped
organize
and set up the
event which included streamers
in the cafeteria and
a lit up archway
the juniors would
cross to enter the
stage guided by
their senior escorts.
“The Ring Ceremony is a rite of
passage for the
juniors becoming
upperclassmen. I
would like to thank
the awesome officers for ensuring
that
everything
went smoothly. It
was a beautiful night,” said Tobin.
Mrs. Lambert kicked off the evening by giving a heartfelt speech
about how proud she was of this
class and how she looks forward
to seeing the many accomplishments this class will achieve.
Despite the small turnout,
Ring was a great night. The elegant scenery, including a grand
archway and lights all across the
stage, provided a great backdrop
for the evening. As the juniors
entered the auditorium, their faces
lit up because of the decorations.
When it was time to receive the
class rings from Mrs. Lambert,
juniors were escorted by seniors
such as Anwar Muhammad, Kara
Mussman, CJ Hughes, and Kata
Kylliainen. This was not only
special for the juniors but also
so unreal. The Ring Ceremony
was a really special night for me,
my classmates and my family. I
hope to be able to escort the juniors next year and give them as
memorable of an experience as I
had,” said junior Isabella Greir.
“It was amazing to get my ring
because it means
I’m almost out
of high school.
The best part was
walking across
stage under the
arc. I felt like I
was getting married,” commented Greg Burton.
Walking across
the stage and under the archway
was the highlight for many
juniors, including Brett Smith.
“It was pretty
cool walking on
stage in front of
the people in the
audience

my peers, and
my ring is pretty
fresh. I was glad
that I had my family there to enjoy

Auditions have long since
ended, the cast has been chosen, and the fall production of
“Madame’s been Murdered, Tea
will be Late” is well on its way
to being ready for opening night.
As the senior showcase, only
seniors will act and perform in the
play. After an hour or so of auditions, Ms.Confair, the director,
selected 13 talented seniors who
really delivered: Tiffany Jackson
as Madge, Cryus Braswell as
Epsworth, CJ Hughes as Major,
Grace Brown as Lady Fenster,
Matt Scheindlinger as Bobby, Mariah Stewart as Matilda, Lindsey
Farrell as Katie, Brody Probst as
Mark, Yelee Kim as Trisha, Bryan Howell as MacDonald, Seth
Herzog as Jagmaster and Doctor Thorndyke, Jake Zeranko as
Milo, and Alexis Corbitt as Elzbeth. With this amazing group of
seniors, this showcase will set the
bar high for the possible senior
showcases in the years to come.
Ms. Confair isn’t alone in making this play great either. With
the play being senior oriented,
she selected juniors Jeanette
Richardson and Nick Reveille
as Assistant Mangers. They help
with blocking and keeping everything in check. Then there’s
always Mr. Voelker and his
tech crew that will work hard
to make the set of Houndstooth
Manor as English as possible.
The play itself is a British
murder mystery, so expect some
creative accents on the stage. It
tells the humorous story of the
workers and visitors of Houndstooth Manor as death strikes,
and everyone begins to question exactly who is to be trusted.
The play involves a very interesting mix of characters. Between the
sass Madge gives out, the heavy
sarcasm of Epsworth the butler,
and the overall witty nature of all
the characters, this play is sure to
make the audience laugh—especially with the Americans Mark
and Trisha providing a strong
contrast between the two cultures.
And who can overlook the eversuspicious inspector Milo who
seems to be hard on everyone’s
case, especially Bobby’s. Maybe
he’s the murderer, maybe not.
Being a play and not a musical,
it’s important that the actors are
exciting and draw the audience in.
This shouldn’t be too hard for the
cast thanks to the action scenes,
sound effects, humor, and tense
atmosphere that’s always present
when a murderer is on the loose.
Come out and see the show on
November 22, 23, and 24 at 7 pm,
to find out who the murderer is.

October: The Breast Cancer Awareness Month
EMMA LORBER
Reporter
Cancer has affected every single person in some way, whether
it be a mother, father, sibling, or
friend being diagnosed. One kind
of cancer that has been the most
widespread is Breast Cancer.
The American Cancer Society,
and the Pharmaceutical Division of Imperial Chemical Industries, have partnered to make
October a month where everyone
would become more aware of
Breast Cancer. In 1985, October
was officially named National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The goald is for women to realize the importance of Mammograms because 1 in 8 women in
the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some
point in her lifetime. Mammograms, the reccomend-
ed tests to ensure health, are
simple x-rays of the breasts. They
take no longer than 15-30 minutes and can detect cancer early,
when it is most treatable. Mammograms can
show changes in breasts
up to 2 years
before a patient can feel
them. It is the
most effective weapon against
B r e a s t
Cancer.
Ms. Jacobs, a Business teacher her, was
diagnosed at age 41 with Breast
Cancer. She went for her first
Mammogram appointment at
age 40 and everything was fine;
however, at her second annual
appointment, she was diagnosed.
“Mammograms saved my life,.
If it weren’t for them, I probably
wouldn’t be here right now,” said
Ms. Jacobs, “mammograms are
so important; don’t skip them.”
She wants to emphasize that everyone at the age of 40 or older
needs one annually. There is a
common misconception that if
your family hasn’t had a history of Breast Cancer, you won’t
need to get mammograms. Ms.
Jacobs had no family history of
Breast Cancer. She was lucky
to have caught the cancer early.
Ms. Jacobs also feels the Loch
Raven community was a big factor in making the
experience pass
a little easier.
“My friends and
family were my
support,”
Ms.
Jacobs recalled;
“Ms. Palmer especially was a big
help through it all.”

influential foundations for Breast
Cancer Awareness. They impact
over 18,000 communities in the
US, and there are over 75,000 volunteer workers who strive to make
the foundation so successful.
The Loch Raven community celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness
Month in various ways. On October 12th, some of our students were
up bright and early to volunteer in
the Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer event. This event is a walk
to fight Breast Cancer, to celebrate
survivors and their friends and
family, and to remember those
who did not win their battles.
Lindsey Farrell, a senior who
attended the event, said “Being
able to contribute personally to
Making Strides was something
you can’t put a price on...the environment and the people there
are something I’ll never forget.”
Breast Cancer is a serious issue,
but with such a strong community
there will always be hope for a cure.

All dressed up for Senior Interviews

The responsibilities of senior
year are steadily creeping up on
the class of 2015. In order to be
refined college students or working adults, the
senior
class
participated
in
mock interviews.
Whether a student already has a
job or is planning
on obtaining one,
practice is what
makes perfect: it
can make the difference between
landing a job or
having to apply
somewhere else.
That is precisely
why teachers encouraged Loch Raven students
to take the interview seriously.
English teachers have provided questions that these interviewers will ask pertaining to
future goals, current academic
achievements, personality, and
much more. With these resources
available, many seniors felt prepared and ready once October
16th came around, as long as they
took the initiative to practice.
“I’m really nervous about the interview,” said senior Tayjah Hunter, “but the paper they give you to
study from seems pretty helpful. I
think I’ll be fine if I write answers
to all of the questions beforehand.”
those three years, students were
simply preparing for their senior
year. As growing adolescents,
seniors must now prepare for the
hardships and responsibilities
of adulthood. It may seem like
a frightening time for most, as
change is something
humans do not take
favorably to, but that
is why Loch Raven
administrators and
faculty have prepared this interview.
They are here to help
cater to students’
future choices and

not need to be someone they aren’t in order to get a
job, because in the end, their interviewer only hires them for who
they really are. As repetitive and
cliché as it may sound, they know
to be truthful. Being genuine is a
vital trait to have in the working
force, or life in general, especially
since it coincides with one of the
traits Loch Raven students are expected to exercise daily: honesty.
“It’s all about preparation. From your shoes to your
shirt, you have exactly six seconds to make an
impression on your interviewer. It could make the
difference between getting the position you want
and not. The practice interview allows students to
become accustomed to a real one and boosts their
confidence the more they realize the type of situation
they are placed in.”
Mr. Palmer, Guidance
The day of the interview, senior
Charles Whiteford was especially
anxious, but he managed to pull his
interview off with flying colors.
“I was pretty nervous for nothing” said Whiteford. “The interview went by smoothly, and I even
got a business card for the job I
want when I graduate college.”

Loch Raven High School prides
itself on its music department,
from all things musical to band to
chorus and triple trio. The marching band was a proud sight for
the past years, but this year there
is no marching band due to lack
of sign-ups. However the new
band teacher, Mr. Welker, took
it upon himself to start the first
ever Loch Raven Drumline, and
the results so far are astonishing.
With nearly 20 people already
in the drumline, Mr. Welker is
sure that it is the largest one in
Baltimore County. The sections
include snare, quad, and bass
drums, as well as a cymbals section. Mr. Welker hopes to have the
drumline perform at the pep rally,
two football games, a parade in
White Marsh and more. Students
have loved the practices so far;
they happen every Wednesday after school. The members already
have learned basic drum patterns
and started learning the pieces
they will perform at their events.
Mr. Welker emphasized the
fact that you didn’t have to have
played a drum beforehand if you
wanted to participate. All students
could join even if it was their first
instrumental experience in their
life. He took the time to explain
to students how to hold drums,
put them on, hold drumsticks, and
the overall basics of performing.
Already, every student in drumline is performing satisfactory
and is learning the music quickly.
Loch Raven students are
blessed to be a part of a school
that cares about its music department as much as they care
about their sports department.
Things can only go up from
here so keep your eye on drumline as it gets bigger and better.

Baseball stars, Noah Johnston,
Aaron Brown, and Reed Brown
became a determined and spirited group of students when they
joined the Its Academic! team
this year. In the beginning, the
guys weren’t too sure about how
well they would do or how far
they would go with the loss of
their teammate, Brody Probst.
They definitely were not sure
how good of a team they actually
would be either. However, the
three were ready to push through.
Throughout the year, the guys
worked really hard on becoming an unbeatable team; however, all they wanted was to
give a good show and support
the academics of Loch Raven
High School, as well as to improve their general knowledge.
On Saturday, September 27th,
the three boys and Mr. Barron,a
LRHS history teacher, went to
Channel 11 Studios on Tv Hill
to compete. Loch Raven fully be-
lieves that the members of the Its
Academic! team will have a promising year and will come out on top
when facing their next opponents.
The show airs on November
1st at 10:00 AM on WJZ-TV.
Tune in to support our boys
and be ready to be amazed!

Culture club has begun. Run by
Ms. Hart, a Spanish teacher on the
second floor, culture club allows
for anyone and everyone to come,
learn about, and experience other
cultures. About once a month a
student will present a country of
their choosing. This presentation
usually includes a PowerPoint
with lots of information, and food
that corresponds to the culture,
along with the regular snacks and
drinks. Often times, presenters
will also select video clips or musical selections to accompany the
presentation to give everyone a
greater introduction to the culture.
This year’s first presentation
was done by senior Johnathan
O’Neill who presented Barbados. He presented an interesting
PowerPoint and displayed a lot
of interest and passion with the
country and the culture. His presentation also included a type of
chicken, beans, and rice meal that
is commonly made in Barbados.
Everyone who attended the
culture club meeting had a great
time, and some students even
signed up to present other countries in the future, ensuring more
interesting presentations to come.
Ms. Hart really does a great job
of encouraging people to be a
part of culture club. She believes
that it’s important that people,
especially students, broaden
their knowledge and understanding of other cultures. There’s
so much to learn from them.
This year’s culture club will
definitely be full of interesting countries and great food.

As of October 1st, 2014, residents of Maryland will have to
pay state sales tax on all of their
Amazon purchases. This sudden
change is the result of the creation of Amazon’s distribution
center in Southeast Baltimore.
This center will hold various
items from the world’s largest online store. The distribution center
will begin operations in the spring,
reported The Baltimore Sun.
The distribution center will be
located on Broening highway
and will be the first physical
presence Amazon has had in
Maryland, according to The Baltimore Sun. Having a distribution center located in Baltimore
makes Amazon a Maryland company, justifying the sales tax.
Amazon already has 96 distribution centers worldwide, and
more are being constructed, specifically in the U.S. According to
Amazon, 23 states in the U.S. are
charged with state sales tax when
making Amazon purchases.
These states include Washington, California, Nevada, Indiana,
Florida, New York, and many
more. Amazon is working on
expanding its empire across the

decided to change the SAT scoring back to out of 1600, due to the
discussions of how the SAT does
not showcase students true talents.
There is a growing change in the
college applications process to try
to make it more beneficial to the
applicants and admissions offices.
The change in technology has been another huge
reason why Goucher has decided to give students the option of the video application.
“We know that video is an
incredibly popular and important
new form of communication.
Students may be more comfortable with this but also something
students will need to do in the
future.” President Jose Antonio
Bowen said. Goucher’s goals for
the video app are for applicants to
be comfortable and confident with
their applications. Students in this
generation rely a lot more on technology than previous generations.
The video application gives
applicants a chance to use technology in a new way, which
is to learn how to apply it in a
professional way. This will be
an essential tool for this generation, because technology will
only keep advancing from here.
The video application has a
prompt and guidelines available
on the Goucher website, to help
applicants who want to use this
option. The video should be no
longer than two minutes and must
follow the rubric. Applicants
have to introduce themselves, explain their talents, discuss possible majors they are interested in,
and how many times they think
they will change their major.

same-day service may also be
an option when the distribution
center opens, says FOX5. The
single Maryland warehouse cannot hold everything that Amazon
offers, so some goods will still be
delivered from other warehouses
in other parts of the country.
Some may argue that because
not all of the items are coming
from the Maryland warehouse,
they should not pay the tax. There
is a good chance that someone
would purchase an item from
Amazon that is shipped from another state and they would still be
required to pay Maryland tax, but
other items would still come directly from the Amazon center in
Baltimore. Some have suggested
to alter the taxes based on which
state its It would be difficult for
Amazon to change tax values depending on if the item is local or
being shipped from elsewhere.
Most Amazon users have already
accepted the new application of
state sales tax, and will continue
to use the online store. Amazon
generally has cheaper prices than
other online sites that are not affected by sales tax, and the overall price will still be lower. In the
end, this is not Amazon’s fault;
they are offering faster shipping
times to residents of Maryland and
will be providing the state with
more spending money with the
addition of the new warehouse.

This year will be Loch Raven’s 3rd year participating in
the Chinese Cultural Exchange
Program, since its start in Baltimore County in 2007. In case
you’re unaware, this is when 30
to 40 students from China come
to visit schools in America, and in
return, a few months later, American students go visit those same
students in China. Two years ago
Will Jones went to China as a
junior along with counselor Mr.
Palner and Spanish teacher Ms.
Confair. Only two students from
Loch Raven have signed up this
year, and Will Jones is the only
one to have participated in the
past. This means those two students will host a Chinese student
between February and March.
While visiting, the Chinese
students will take various cultural
trips to New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Lancaster, Gettysburg and Ocean City,
as well as a trip to Disneyland
in California at the end of their
month-long stay here. What’s
better than some historical cities
and Disneyland to really get that
All-American experience? Aside
from the cultural visits, the students will also take several different college trips, too, because
most of them will continue on to
attend college here in the U.S.
When they aren’t taking trips,
the students will be accompanying their American student host
to regular classes here at Loch
Raven. In the past, the visiting
students tended to be more inter-
ested in math and science classes, psychology, and P.E. After a
month jam packed with all the
trips and experiences in American
classrooms, the students return
home around the end of March.
Toward the end of the school
year, the American students here
in Baltimore County take a flight
to China for seven weeks. From
May to the beginning of July, the
Baltimore County students will
visit Tie Yi High School in Xi’an,
China. They are submerged in
an entirely new culture and sit
in on calligraphy, drumming and
cooking classes, along with other
traditional Chinese classes; however, that’s not all they do, the
students are taken on a variety of
trips to historical sites, like the
Great Wall of China, Tiananmen
Square and Bejing, the capital.
Also, aside from the organized
trips, the host families take their
visiting students for weekend
trips, too. Chinese culture-related classes are explored as well.
They are able to fully experience the new food, housing and
language thorugh these classes.
It may be too late for you to
apply to visit China this year,
but there’s nothing stopping you
from going next school year, even
if you’ll be a senior. While Mr.
Palmer was there, two seniors
on the trip were graduated on the
Great Wall of China. Although
unusual, that experience will last
and stand out for ages to come.
The idea of visiting a foreign
country for seven long weeks may
be intimidating, but just think of
the memories you’ll make embracing the language and culture
of China, as well as the bonds that
won’t be broken. If at all interest-

The world is over populated and
growing outrageously to unhealthy
levels. Feeding the world’s growing population will not be an easy
task. By 2100, it’s estimated that
there will be 11 billion people on
the planet, which is 3 billion more
than there are today. There are
also 870 million people worldwide are already malnourished.
The planet can definitely produce enough food for 11 billion
people, experts say, but whether
humans can do it sustainably, and
whether consumers will ultimately be able to afford that food, are
separate matters. A number of different strategies will be required,
each of which will move humans
a little bit closer to regulating the amount of food
they consume.
The
solution that scientists
have concluded to feeding the world’s growing
population is to eat less
meat. Beef in particular
is not a very sustainable food to eat, said
Jamais Cascio, an educator at the Institute for
the Future. According to
Cascio’s calculation, the
greenhouse gas emissions generated by the production of cheeseburgers in the United States
each year are about equal to the
greenhouse gas emissions from

said, obviously tobacco companies are only in it for the money.
E-cigs use a small, heated coil
to vaporize a nicotine-laced solution into an aerosol mist. By
inhaling the mist, users enjoy a
similar satisfaction to that which
they get from an ordinary cigarette, but in this way, they do
not expose themselves to tobacco, which turns into cancercausing tar when it is burned.
But the higher temperatures also
can trigger a thermal breakdown
of the solvents, producing the
carbonyls says Science News.
Carbonyls include known
cancer-causing chemicals such
as Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde.
Higher temperatures
allow users to increase an ecigarette’s voltage, to increase
more nicotine per puff, increasing the danger significantly.
In lieu of tobacco, e-cigarettes
advertise three main ingredients:
Nicotine, flavoring, and Propylene Glycol. But, these are not
the only ingredients. The primary
established danger of Nicotine is
that the stimulant is highly addictive, although emerging science also links it to an impaired
immune system (FDA.org).
Propylene Glycol has been
“generally recognized as safe”
according to the FDA. It is a
syrupy synthetic liquid added to
absorb water and help the product stay moist. Propylene Glycol
is usually eaten (in cupcakes,
soft drinks, and salad dressings) or slathered onto the body
in the form of soaps, shampoos,
and antiperspirants; however,
none of these products are safe
to breathe into the lungs. Many

times as high as the Environmental Protection Agency’s 24hour exposure limit for levels of
fine air particles. Fourty percent
of these inhaled particles would
deposit in the lungs’ smallest,
deepest airways (ScienceNews).
E-cigarettes have triggered a
fierce debate among health experts who share the same goal of
reducing disease and death caused
by tobacco. Health experts worry
that e-cigs are making smoking

Halloween side effects Feeling a little stressed?

You know that Halloween is
just around the corner when the
neighborhood houses begin looking like local haunted houses with
blow-up pumpkins and ghosts.
Huge bags of Halloween candies
are sold on sale, local farms are
bumbling with people, and trees
shed their leaves as they change
color from green to brown.
Houses smell like the Harvest
Yankee Candle, and heater bills
rise in zeros. As October rolls
in, the Halloween hype seems
to take over grocery stores and
neighborhoods—not
knowing
the side effects of Halloween.
Halloween is a holiday loved
by children because of the free
candy. On other days, dressing up
in a horrifying costume won’t get
anyone candy. But on Halloween,
it works. The amount of money
spent on preparing for Halloween
is about $6.5 billion (from Forbes.
com), as adults stock up candy
for demanding children. What
they don’t know is the amount
of effects that come along with
the huge pillowcases of candy.
Some of the side effects are well
known, such as weight gain, diabetes, and terrible oral health. But
some effects that teenagers (and
adults) might care about but may
not actually know includes the
possibliity of impaired immune
systems, acne, increased chances
of depression, overload on the
liver, high cholesterol, and the
overall effect candy has on hormones and brain (from AuthorityNutrition, FITBIE, and SFGATE).
Of course, eating one Hershey
bar won’t give you this huge list
of side effects, but, it’s important
to keep the health effects in mind
as you dig into the massive stash
of candy. Sometimes these stashes of candies include toothbrushes, floss, and pencils. You might
insult them now, but in the long
run, you’ll thank them for caring
about the trick-or-treaters’ health.
There are many misconceptions
about Halloween and safety due
to Hollywood movies blowing up
crimes like “Halloween,” “Nightmare on Elm Street,” and many
more. One that everyone seems to
believe is that crimes rates, such
as theft, vandalism, and simple
assault, increase during the day of
Halloween, according to Christian
Post, police officers say that usually crimes are scattered around
the month and that Halloween
isn’t the cause of these crimes.
There is no need for worrying
about sex offenders around the
neighborhood thanks to the Operation Safe Halloween. Operation
Safe Halloween is partnered with
Department of Correction and it
prevents sex offenders from getting in touch with children. This
program is implemented in Atlanta, New York, and other states.
Safety is something each individual should pay strict attention
to, especially when wandering
around in the dark. Fires can be
avoided when the houses aren’t
loaded with electrical cords and
lights because of excessive decorations. Not wearing masks while
walking from house to house can
also enforce safety. Everyone
is encouraged to keep in mind
usual safety rules, communicating, and staying on sidewalks
can keep everyone safe and happy during the spooky holiday.

When it comes to Trader Joes

are lower than the name- brand

there is a larger selection at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. www.

Trader Joes and Whole Foods

who are allergic to certain things.
They make sure they have food
for those who specifically need
to know where to get there foods
that are good but also help with
their needs for specific foods.
Also a new conclusion is that Whole
Foods has become more expensive, BusinessInsider.com states.
So now, people who recently
went to Whole Foods are switching to Trader Joes to get the same
thing for a cheaper price. But after
all the complaints, Whole Foods
responded by lowering their
prices. Whole Foods has been in
business longer than Trader Joes
and is more dominant when it
comes to organic markets. But,
when Trader Joes came in the
picture, it became competition.
Many people continue to debate

for people picking which store
they choose to shop at is convenience. With gas prices being so
high, people are less likely to travel farther for the same thing. It all
depends on which store you prefer.

A popular form of tanning is
also the tanning bed or booth, a

you are going to a tanning bed,
you should use a few precautions
to help keep you safe. You should

Makeup products

Our skin protects our body
in many ways, yet we often compromise our skin
for a variety of reasons.
It has been proven that a combination of chemicals in makeup
can have long-term effects on
the body. One harmful chemical
in makeup is aluminum, which
is dangerous and is the chemical that is said to be linked to
Alzheimer’s disease. Aluminum
is found in anti-perspirants and
doesn’t allow the skin to breath
because it can block sweat from
being released from the body.
Another potentially harmful
chemical in makeup are certain essential oils. Rosemary,
for instance, might irritate the
skin, and sage, another essential oil, is not recommended for pregnant woman because of side effects. The most harmful chemical
found in some makeup is called
Toluene. This is often found in
nail products and nail polish removers. Toluene is known to affect the nervous system by causing nausea, weakness, dizziness,
loss of appetite, and confusion.
In some countries, like Canada, not all ingredients are
listed on product labels. But,
if you’re concerned about this,
most products have a toll free
number that you can call and a
customer service representative
will provide you with the information about what is in the
product as well as any warnings.
Also, remember that the price
of the product is not a reliable
source that the product is natural or safe because in most cases,
products from the lowest to the
highest price have the same base
ingredients and have the same
dangers. This is especially important if you like natural and safe
makeup products for your skin.
Natural cosmetics and makeup
are generally healthier and safer
not only for your skin. Natural
cosmetics avoid the use of artificial products such as fats, waxes,
and most harmful chemicals.
Certain brands of these cosmetics can be quite costly, but if you
shop around, organic makeup is
often much cheaper than regular makeup. It is also known to
look more natural than regular
makeup. Some popular brands
are Bare Minerals, Physician’s
Formula, Eco Bella cosmetics,
and After Glow. There are more
and more organic makeup companies on the market each year.
Whatever make up you decide
to use, be aware of the ingredients and the possible long-term
effects that it could have on your
skin. Afterall, you only get one
set of skin -- take care of it!

Halloween costumes that need to die

Halloween is almost here which

what costume to wear. People

Many of these costumes are
thrown together with very
little effort and quite frankly,
they can be kind of boring.
Some girl costumes that
should probably be retired for

a witch. Girls will wear all
black or grey and add a few
store-bought accessories like
whiskers and ears and bam,
they have a costume. Unfortunately, it’s not very original and
they reuse them over and over
again which just gets tiring.
The most over done, unoriginal costume for boys is
either a football player or any
of the superheroes. The boys
probably put forth even less effort than the girls do. They just

Again unoriginal and uncreative,

Haunted houses come back across Baltimore

REPORTER
Haunted Houses are a popular
activity to engage in around Halloween time and throughout October. People do everything from
bobbing to apples, trick or treating,
going to parties, and making costumes, but nothing brings together
the Halloween feel better than a
good scare. Some haunted houses
in Maryland have recently gained
traction as being very popular.
Field of Screams is one of the
more popular haunted houses that
people, especially teenagers, go
to. It’s located in Pennsylvania.
The prices, ranged from 14 to
33 dollars, are based on whether
or not you go with a group. You
can also pay for a VIP pass or
a pass to skip through the line.
Legends of the Fog is another
popular attraction, in Aberdeen,
Maryland. This is
another teen favorite to go to; a lot of
people like to go
in large groups to
ones that are farther away. Also,
teams can go to
these as a bonding
event. They have
food on site, like
food trucks so you
don’t have to bring food or worry
about going far away afterwards.
The attractions that are on site
are the Sinister Circus, Haunted
Hayride, and Carsins Manor.
Bates Motel may sound familiar
to you as a television show, or the
featured hotel in the 1960’s film,
Psycho, but it has been around
longer than that. It does have the
main attraction which is the hotel, with different floors to travel
through. It also has
the Haunted Hayride
as well as the traditional corn maze. It
has scheduled dates
for special events
like live broadcasts
on the radio and
Military vet nights.

with many other attractions on
site. They have Field of Frights
and Zombie Apocalypse which is
new to the site. Carnival of Fear,
Lost in Jason’s woods, and Chamber of Horrors are just some of the
attractions they can offer. Jason’s
Woods is located in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania. The idea of it being
in Pennsylvania which is already
a farmland type of place and
wooded areas, adds to the scariness of being in a secluded area.
This Halloween season, no matter your schedule or interests, you
should go check out some haunted houses because you might
just have a spooky good time.

A haunting Halloween
QUR’AN HARLING
Reporter
In this article we will be
highlighting the scariest monsters Halloween has to offer,
from scariest to least scary.
Number one are zombies.
Zombies are number 1 because
they are completely mindless
monsters wandering around with
their only intent being to kill
and eat humans. The reason that
they are so scary is because they
can’t be reasoned with they have
no morality so begging won’t
work. The only thing that can
stop them is a swift chopping
their head off their body. Because they cannot feel pain, normal weapons won’t affect their
bloodlust desire for human flesh.
Number two Jack the Ripper.
In 1888 in London, England, he
killed at least 5 women. These
were typically prostitutes and
involved cutting the throat before removing vital organs.
Something that makes him so
scary is that he was never discovered, despite having his murders go down in history. Conspiracy theories scour the web,
but his identity is still a mystery.
Number three are ghosts. They
are third because it is possible
for you to appeal to their sense
of morality, often times you can
try to reason with a ghost, but if
they have a vengeance for blood,
you are out of luck. They can
walk through walls at will, and
it’s impossible to touch them,
so trying to kill them is nearly
impossible. The best thing to
do is move out of your haunted house as soon as possible.
Number four are vampires.
Vampires make fourth place because you can appeal to their
sense of morality as well as
ghosts. Although they are ruthless blood sucking monsters,
they have 3 ways to kill them;
you can use garlic, sunlight, or a
wooden stake through the heart.
Finally, number five is werewolves. Only transforming once
per month, werewolves are only
dangerous if they catch you off
guard. They have many things
that can kill them which can be
summed up into one word, silver, which can be found in many
places. However, werewolves are
beasts that are bigger and stronger then both regular wolves
and humans combined, making
them the least scary monster.
This Halloween, make sure that
you keep an eye out on all the
monsters that can be lurking in
the dark. And maybe you’ll even
see something a little scarier than
the ones listed here. Keep the salt
by your side and an extra case of
silver bullets because once a year
is when all the creepy crawly
mythical monsters come out to
play and, most importantly, to kill.

American Horror Story, other

a storyline with its own “beginning, middle, and end.” There
are three seasons already aired

The first season, American Horror Story: Murder House, received exceptionally high ratings
the first night and continued to receive high ratings every episode.
The season focuses on a family

Artistic Spotlight: Fall Photography

Mallory Diffenderfer, a junior here at Loch Raven High
School, is currently in her second
year of Photography with Ms.
Stokes. Diffenderfer explains her
love for the art and subject here.
“It’s really relaxing to edit
a photo after taking it,” Diffenderfer said. “It’s my favorite subject. Ms. Stokes is really helpful for teaching you
new techniques in Photoshop.”
The project they were assigned
was for minimalism and Diffenderfer’s response was a collection
of photographs taken from an
elementary school field which
highlighted artistic elements such
as depth, balance, and emphasis.
Photography is a popular class
among students and it’s not too
hard to see why. The class teaches
responsibility and how to manage your time properly. These are
important things for all people.
And these photos aren’t what
most digital photographers are
used to. Sometimes they use film
cameras as well in class. The
process is a lot longer, having
to develop the film themselves
and waiting for it to come out.
“If you’re not careful and don’t
follow the development process
perfectly your film could come
out as just black.”Diffenderfer
recalls, however she was lucky
to have never encountered this
problem
while
developing.
Diffenderfer plans to pursue
photography as a hobby outside
of school and into the near future.

For the past 11 years, Nike and

Popular Costumes

Halloween is the time for
having fun, hanging out, trickor-treating, and spending the
night at a haunted house. Costumes are always at the core
of every Halloween festivity.
The most popular Halloween
costumes would be the superheroes like The Incredibles, Captain
America, Batgirl, Cat Woman,
Spider girl, Wonder Woman, Robin, The Green Lantern and Flash
costumes. These are just some
examples of popular costumes
that people wear. The most popular costumes for movies are Mrs.
Incredible, Chucky, Wilma from
The Flintstones, a minion from
Despicable Me, Alice in Wonderland, Morticia from The Addams
Family, and Jack Skellington from
The Nightmare before Christmas.
But, some people like to make
their homemade costumes which
are cheap. It is much cheaper
compared to the normal Halloween costume at your nearby Walmart, Target and Halloween store.
But, Halloween is the time for
having fun and spending the night
getting free candy, going to parties and scaring people just for the
fun of it. Some people will chose
a more scary approach to their
costumes. Some people dress up
just for fun to celebrate Halloween. Halloween only comes once
a year and people want to get a
chance to celebrate it before it’s
over and wait another year for it.
No matter what costume you
chose, it’s sure to be a crowd
pleaser as long as you work hard
on it and chose something you
love. Costumes tell people a lot
about you, in a way, as well. A
funny costume can express your
humor while a scary costume can
express your love for Halloween
and horror movies. Pop culture or
movie costumes are great to show
which movie you loved during
the past year as well. No matter
what, costumes are something
that society loves as a whole and
does not seem to be going out of
style anytime soon. It’s up to you
whether you want to fit in with
the popular costumes or stand out
with your own original idea that
will sure to catch an eye or two.

Too old to trick-or-treat? PSL overrated?
Tate Stevens
Reporter
Halloween is probably one
of the most popular, most recognized, and most celebrated
holiday. Some people claim to
like Christmas better because of
free presents, but Halloween offers something special. We all
remember trick-or-treating as
little kids; the excitement, the
planning of the route, costumes,
groups of friends, and most importantly, the free candy. As
kids get older, they tend to stop
trick-or-treating and start going
to parties and other Halloween
festivities, yet some kids keep on
going. Why stop when there is
free candy in the future. Parents
of younger kids do not want their
street populated with teenagers
on Halloween night. So, when
is the right age to stop Trick-orTreating? A lot of people say 15,
but the age you should stop depends on you on you and, overall,
what kind of a person you are.
First, if you are going to go
Trick-or-Treating, think about
your costume. Costumes are an
important part of Halloween.
With no masks, capes, or props,
Halloween would just not be the
same. If you are planning on going
Trick-or-Treating but don’t want
a costume, you probably should
not be going out. How would you
feel if you were a parent and a
couple of teenagers came to you
in hoodies demanding candy? The
fact that you are in a costume is
in a way comforting; the parents
know you are Trick-or-Treating
in the spirit of Halloween. If you
are wearing a costume, make sure
it is appropriate. You can go cra-

at a party with friends, but when
you are Trick-or-Treating, you
are surrounded by kids. Not only
could you scare the kids, but you
are also influencing the kids. No
matter how ridiculous it sounds,
the young kids do look up to
you, no matter what. Now most
of these kids can handle a scary
mask, but there are some who are
too young or too scared to hold
themselves together. Once I wore
a Darth Maul mask to Trick-orTreating, and I eventually had
to take it off due to “Mommy!
Save me from the monster!”
Secondly, what are you trying
to do? Are you enjoying Halloween, are you getting free candy,
or are you finding houses to toilet
paper and egg after the Trick-orTreaters leave? The first two options are okay, but if you are there
to find the perfect people to throw
things at, you have grown up a little too much for Trick-or-Treating
and you have watched too much
TV for your own good. This is
very unlikely to happen, but then
again, one bad story about teenagers and trick-or-treating and
then the stereotypes take place.
Even if you feel like you have
grown out of Trick-or-Treating,
there are plenty of fun things to
do on Halloween like going to parties. If you are into being terrified,
check out the “Field of Screams”
or other haunted houses. Overall, I think that the superstition
of teenagers is a little crazy and
unnecessary. If you don’t want to

Today’s automobiles have become so efficient in their speed
and maneuverability that the suburban rural roads that they are
used on have become death traps
for bicyclists and pedestrians because of
the high percentage
of collisions. There
should be an effort
lead by the government to improve bicycle and pedestrian
pathways to help
improve the quality of life for people
in our communities.
Bicycle and pedestrian collisions with
cars have sky-rocketed over the last
15 years. Numerous
newspaper articles
have reported that
the problem is many
more cars are on our narrow roads
that are designed for low-volume
traffic. Cars are designed to go
faster than our local and rural
roads. There is an overwhelming
demand by families to not have to
get into their cars, but rather hike
or bike from their neighborhoods
into town, school, or any nearby
park; however, they cannot because of the dangerous conditions.
Some counties are addressing
these problems by building trails
or simply putting in bike lanes
in order to connect these places
with great success. As a result

there is a high

in
these
type
communities.
Residents who live along the
narrow roads often discourage
the building of trails because they
do not want to give up 8 to 10
feet easement for a trail to come
through. These folks think it’s an
invasion of their privacy or that
someone might ride off with their
television strapped to the back of
their bike. Politicians are aware
of the push for trails where this
kind of contention exists. A solution for such a situation would
be to get the ball rolling by
building sections of trails in
areas where there is no contention, kind of like the lowhanging fruit, once you have a
large enough section to make
a connection between places,
people will use it. Usually, the
first ones to ride the trail are
the ones who are against it,
so then maybe they will help
change the minds of others.
Local governments need
to be more proactive in their
efforts to provide pedestrian
safety on our suburban and
rural roads. As pointed out,
trail and bike lanes are the
most common solution to
address these challenges. If
political leaders had more
of a vision and more guts to
tackle the situation, they would
take the lead in convincing property owners along these dangerous roads that allowing a trail to
come through will improve their
property and the quality of life of
those in our local communities.

Nowadays millions of kids
are obese. Some reasons include
greasy food, inactive lifestyle,
and television. Heart disease is
the number one death in America.
Heart disease can be caused by
eating fatty foods and not exercising. So should people consider handing out vegetables instead
of candy on Halloween night?
The average candy bar contains 250 calories and 9.5 grams
of fat. Almost all vegetables are
less than 20 calories. Just that is
a huge difference. An average
American eats 24 pounds of candy per year. That’s a total of a lot
of calories. This is why people
are obese and dying of diabetes.
A 36 pack of 3 Musketeers’
costs $36 compared
to a bag of 36 pieces
celery being only $2.
That would save a lot
of money for all the
people
worldwide
who hand out candy
that night. The total
amount of money
spent on Halloween
candy is 2.3 million
dollars just to hand
out for free. Maybe if they charged
$0.25 for a piece of
candy kids would
reconsider
going
out on Halloween
night for candy.
If these children
would just eat their vegetables
at dinner that would give them
energy to engage in physical activity for an hour a day. Then,
going out on Halloween night
and getting some candy would
be well deserved. Also, if the
kids ate their vegetables, they
cut lose some weight instead of
gaining weight by eating candy.
With October comes all the
candy and all the vegetables disappear. A lot of people will argue
that kids should not be served candy and should be given a healthy
serving of vegetables. But when
it comes down to it, the kids don’t
want this change, nor do any kids
want to eat vegetables. Halloween
is all about candy, and if we change
this tradition, Halloween would
never be the same ever again.
People need to realize that this day
full of candy and sweets will not
harm you anymore than what you
are eating every day. You avoid a
candy bar, but you still smoke a
half a pack of cigarettes a day and
adding that sweet & low to your
coffee this morning didn’t help
either. So we are safe eating just
a little bit of candy on this day.
We focus on this change because we are scared of facing
the bigger demons in candy.
Like the calories and fats leading to diabetes and obesity. But
the fact is we are not poisoning ourselves with one day of
candy. Candy will not become
part of our everyday cuisine.
If we just eat healthy on regular basis, we won’t have to worry
about any of these health problems or what we serve on Halloween. Everyone deserves a cheat
day! And we can have a candyfilled Halloween every year!

the Raiders from being behind.
During halftime, Coach Grzbien
gave the girls a strong speech
about how the seniors need to
go out with a win in their final
home game. She got the girls
fired up for the second half,
knowing that they could pull
through and beat Eastern Tech.
The game was a hard defensive
battle for the Raiders keeping
Eastern Tech from scoring at all
in the seond half of play, while
also trying to take the lead. Just
into the second half, junior Veda
Nowowieski scored a goal to
take the lead. This gave the Raiders the edge they needed over
the Mavericks. The Raiders then
scored again with goals by sophomore Taylor Dodd and Memphis, making the score 4 to 1.
Junior Captain Alyssa Demski
stated, “This game was a huge
win for us. Six wins in a row is
something we haven’t done in
awhile. This is a great way to begin to end the season. If we keep
this up, the playoffs will be easy
for us while on such a hot streak.”

The Varsity volleyball team is
eyeing up a trip to the Regional
championship once again this
year, only this time hoping to get
past it into the state semis stage.
They had a rough start losing
their first two games vs. Towson
and Hereford. It wasn’t the way
they wanted to start the season.
They lost to Hereford in the 2A
north regional championship last
year, and were looking to get
revenge to start the season. Going home with a loss was hard,
but the team knew they would
see them again in the playoffs.
The Lady Raiders have gone on
a 10-2 streak after their 0-2 start.
Their two other losses were to
powerhouse programs in
Dulaney and Franklin.
Other than that, they’ve
cruised through their
schedule with a breeze.
They beat team after
team three sets to none.
The team has a great senior captain in Katie Costello who has stepped up
a lot this year. “Having
two years of varsity experience really helped me
going into the season. I’ve
learned from a lot of people the
last two years that have given me
the knowledge to be a successful
captain this year.” Costello said.

The MLB postseason is underway and unlike most years,
there is no clear favorite to win
the World Series. The top seed
in the American League, the Los
Angeles Angels, have already
been swept by the Kansas City
Royals. The Royals had an impressive comeback victory in
the AL Wildcard game against
the Athletics to advance to the
ALDS; however, The Royals had
to square off with the surging
Baltimore Orioles in the ALCS.
After losing Matt Wieters and
Manny Machado to injury, in addition to the suspension of Chris
Davis, the Orioles have stood
behind Skipper, Buck Showalter, who voiced his opinion about
the team’s lack of success early
in the ALCS: “You never assume anything, that something
bad is going to happen or something good is going to happen.
Just go out there and let your
curiosity be satisfied. We have
good people and I trust them.”
The Orioles won the AL East
and swept The Detroit Tigers,
yet it was in the ALCS where the
Orioles saw their season come to
an end. The Royals made runs
in an unorthodox fashion and
swept The Orioles to reach their
first World Series since 1985.
In the National League, the
top-seeded Nationals had a tough
matchup with the San Francisco
Giants. The Giants used their
playoff experience to win their
series with The Nationals in 4
games. The other National League
Division Series was between the
Los Angeles Dodgers and the
St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers pitching, which they heavily
relied on in the regular season,
failed them in the postseason.
The Giants and The Cardinals
squared off in the NLCS. After defeating The Nationals, the Giants
beat the Cardinals in 5 games and
found themselves in the World Series for the third time in five years.
The Giants are looking to win
another World Series, as the
Royals look for their first series win in the past 29 years.

Junior varisty fall sports wrapup

This year was an exciting season
for the junior varsity teams. There
were many wins and experiences
that gave all the teams more motivation throughout the season.
Junior varsity teams are where
new players and incoming freshmen have the opportunity to learn
a new sport or progress more in a
sport in order to move up to the
varsity level. Coaches and captains have prepared their teams
significantly and have made huge
impacts on their seasons thus far.
The girls’ junior varsity soccer
team had a record of 5 wins, 2
losses, and 3 ties. The highlight
of the girls’ soccer team was their
win against Dulaney. At the end of
the game, the score was tied 2-2.
In double overtime, sophomore,
Brittney Trees made a powerful
shot to the top right-hand corner
of the goal. “The girls played
extremely well and never gave
up,” stated Coach Nicole Hoeck.
The opposing teams were unable to score thanks to defenders
Jayla Ragsdale, Cristina Coppola,
Brittney Trees, Keira McNulty,
and goalie, Amethyst Stevens.
The offense has also dominated
the field in every game. Offenders
Nicole Vong, Sydney Watson, and
Caroline Ellis used their speed
to carry the ball up the field for
a goal. Coach Hoeck said, “Our
team is always hungry for goals.”
The boys’ soccer team had a
great season filled with determination and energy. Sophomore
captains Will VanLuven, Barry
Lester, Ervin Lopez, and Rory
Gibbons-O’Neil led the team
through a season of tough opponents. The team fought hard
in every game, which was especially evident in the game against
Perry Hall. Sophomore Camilo
Rodriguez scored early in the first
half, and sophomore goalie Victor
Presti saved 18 shots in the game.
The team’s effort paid off in their
game against Pikesville as well.
They beat Pikesville 4-0. The
leading scorers of the team were
Barry Lester and Ervin Lopez each
with three goals. Coach Gambler
said, “Players to watch out for
next year include midfielder Mateo Ndoci, forward Spencer Williams, forward Cole McNulty, and
defenseman Dominic Colarussu.”
Overall both soccer teams made
improvements to their skills and
used team work and sportsmanship to make them successful in
each game they played. Captains
Jayla Ragsdale, Cristina Coppola
and Sydney Watson on the girls’
team all contributed their time
and previous knowledge about
the sport during practice in order to make the team better. The
captains on the boys’ team made
significant contributions for their
team as well with their positive
criticism. Sadly, the teams are
unlikely to make an appearance
in the County Championship, but
there is always room for next year.
Junior varsity football’s record
this season was 2-4. Not many
games were played because the
season started out slowly. The
team consisted of mostly freshman because the few sophomores
are on varsity and other sophomores did not return. Coach Joe
Jenkins says, “The kids have stuck
it out and continued to improve
every week.” The inexperience
of the team was a major factor in
the overall success throughout the
season, but key captains, David
Liverpool, Andrew Wisner, and
Tariq Davis were big role models in helping the team out. Other
players such as Yohan Milele,
Corbin Press, Aaron Giggers,
Da’mon Jones, and Orion Bolden,
all set a good example by maintaining good grades and balancing practices into their schedules.
Junior varsity field hockey had
had an impressive season even
though their overall record was
3-5. Their best game of the season was against Sparrows Point
with a score of 2-0. Coach Jaclyn
Gordon said, “Every single player
on our team had her best game
of the season. We looked like a
team, moved the ball where we
wanted it to go, and played great
defense.” Throughout the season,
key scorers were Rojin Rezai with
5 goals, and Destiny Ingram with
3 goals. Captains Yoona Eom and
Kate Kwak both incorporated
their defensive skills into every
game. Another key player to highlight is Minny Kim. This was her
first year playing field hockey and
has grown incredibly in her skills.
This years’ junior varsity volleyball team had many new faces
along with a good amount of returning players. The record of
their season was 8-4. The captains consisted of sophomores
Jaslyn McCoy and Ashley Reier,
as well as freshman captain Lindsey Hamel. New players Sarah
Levy and Sarah Singer were able
to pick up the sport quickly and
make outstanding plays in various games throughout the season.
The captains made a huge impression on the team this year. Jaslyn
McCoy dominated the front row
as she constantly attacked the
ball. Reier was the team’s libero,
and she made many great defensive plays and prevented the
other teams from earning points.
Although some people might
overlook the skills of junior varsity teams, it is neccessary to realize
that the junior varsity teams make
substantial influences on the future of our varsity teams. There is
a lot for coaches and players to be
proud of this season. They continue to impress students and faculty.

surprised for the Ravens this so
far this year. After having 6 carries all of last year, Forsett leads
the league in yards per carry after 7 weeks. The backfield for
the Ravens has become a three

bulk of the work in the backfield
as Lorenzo Taliaferro brings a

Bernard Pierce had suffered a
series of injures in the season so
far, but hopes to add speed and

arguably been the most impressive player on the defensive side.

The stars of the defense include

The varsity golf season ended
with a losing record of 2-3-1, but
overall it was a hard fought season.
With 4 returning players and 4
new golfers, Coach Dursa had
to work hard to get the team on
a competitive level. Led by senior captain and number 1 golfer
AJ Hayes, the team relied on
returning players such as seniors Hayes and Nolan Kent and
sophomores Jacob Westervelt and
Colin Brown to lead the young
team. The two victories of the
season came against Franklin and
Pikesville, and the tie coming
against Owings Mills, and the 3
tough losses against Dulaney and
Sparrows Point and Patapsco.
The senior captain A.J Hayes
was overall pleased with the season, “Coming back for my second year of golf, I was ready to
have fun, with half the team returning and half new-comers, I
knew it would be a good mix. We
had fun every practice and there
was never a boring practice.”
A.J. Hayes, Ed Countrymen,
and Colin Brown were eligible to go to counties, but only
Hayes and Countryman went.
“County playoffs were very
fun. It was really cool seeing
so many people from so any
different schools coming together to play golf,” said Hayes.
Freshman golfer Spencer Kerns
said that “This season was so
much fun, even if we didn’t do so
well, it was fun meeting people
from different schools and being
able to compete against them.”
Coach Dursa had similar sentiments about this season: “It was by
far the most enjoyable team I have
worked with; even if we didn’t
win much, I personally had a lot of
fun with this group of guys. They
were always improving throughout the season and improving on
their own scores. It’s sad to lose
the 3 senior golfers, but we look
to improve more next season. We
hope next year to finish with the
winning record and hopefully get
more golfers to join the team.”
The team looks forward to
next fall. With the hard work
and dedication of the golfers and the expertise of Coach
Dursa, the team will surely be
one to look out for next season.

After week 7 in the NFL, the
Baltimore Ravens are in sole possession of first place in the AFC
North division. Behind them are
the talented Cincinnati Bengals.
Led by quarterback Andy Dalton,
the Bengals have been considered
a top 5 team by NFL analysts each
of the first 7 weeks. The Browns
and Steelers round out the division
with 3-3 records. To much surprise
in the league, notorious rookie
quarterback Johnny Manziel has
not yet won the starting job over
quartberback Brian Hoyer. Both
the Browns and Steelers have had
embarrassing losses against poor
teams in 2014; however, the Bengals look to have no signs of stopping. Baltimore has a tough road
ahead of them if they look to stay

year so far, possibly the most impressive free agent signing in the
offseason by any team. Through 7
weeks in the 2014 season, Smith

all receiving categories. Another

Madison Williams is currently
a three-sport varsity athlete. During her freshman year, she was
on junior varsity volleyball. This
year, as a sophomore, she has improved her skills and earned herself a starting spot on the varsity
team. Williams also plays varsity
basketball and varsity softball.
She plays shooting guard and
small forward for basketball and
3rd base and outfield for softball.
Williams has been involved in
basketball for 12 years, softball
for 2 years, and volleyball since
her freshman year at Loch Raven. Before she played softball,
Williams was a part of recreational baseball. She says, “As
much as I loved baseball, I love
softball more because the speed
of the game is faster and more
exciting in almost every aspect.”
Overall, softball is her favorite
sport. Last season, Williams influenced the varsity softball team
greatly considering their starting
third basemen, Meaghan Mostyn,
had graduated the year before.
She learned the position well and
helped make several key plays
throughout the season.Her hitting
also helped the team in each game.
Williams plays setter on the
volleyball team and contributed
greatly to the team’s success.
Their current record is 10-4. The
key highlights of her season so far
were the wins against Catonsville
and Mercy. She said, “My coach
is always there to help me improve my skills. Win or lose, there
will always be something that the
team can work on as a whole.”
Although Williams was on junior varsity volleyball this year
as a freshman, she was pulled
up during post season to help out
varsity. The team made it all the
way to regional finals last year
against Hereford, however they
lost. Williams is hoping to face
Hereford again and defeat them
since they lost to them already
this season. “I want to come up
against them one more time so we
can win and go to state semis.”
Williams is looking forward to basketball and softball and hopes to be successful in both seasons as well.
