IVJGMS l{ewsflyer Monthly Meetines in the 2006-2007 Season! Here is a recap of the events that took place during the 2006-2007 season: Septernber: The new season started off with guest artist, Vinny Valentino. Vinny treated the membership to his insights about performing jazz guitar- including how he treats the melody and harmony when performing guitar. www.vinny.com. February: We had composer/guitarist/mandolinist John LaBarbera visit and talk about composing music for film. He used examples from movies and talked about the challenges of making the music and film come into one art form. Examples were also performed on guitar and mandolin. wwwj ohntlabarbera. com. March: Patrick Appello treated the membership October: Classical guitarist Keith Calmes presented a classical program including a few of his own compositions. Keith talked about composing for the guitar and also featured one of his students who performed a solo and a duet with Keith. with a close look of 2 historic instruments: an 1865 Tones and a 1916 Garcia. Patrick performed on both instruments and let the membership try them out. The instruments are on loan from the Augustine Collection. www.myspace.com/patrickappello I April: Our last meeting of the season Tomas Rodriguez came from NYC to perform and demonstrate common Latin American guitar techniques and styles. www.tomasrodriguez.com post-season event will be held at Trumpets Jazz Club and Restaurant. This is our annual Guitar Night, which features up-and-coming talent from NJ. Admission is $10 for everyone. May: Our November: Joyce Balint came with a Neapolitan mandolin to discuss arranging music. She brought copies of original scores and played through the material demonstrating how the original composition can be best re-written for mandolin. December: Tom Dempsey took time from his busy schedule to share his personal approach and insights in music. He explained various musical concepts and then demonstrated them on his tunes and jazz arrangements. www.tomdempseymusic. com. January: We had Carol Hammersma visit with her bassist. Carol performed a set of jazz music (voice and guitar). We will be continuing with our Guest Artist series. In addition, we will have a specihc meeting geared to beginners (or more advanced musicians trying new material) in a song circle format. This will be a nonintimidating environment, moderated where musicians can share music and offer constructive feedback. ln our next season we are planning to continue the current format of having each meeting run as follows: 20 minutes- meet the members. l0 minutes- news, announcements, member recitals. 45 minutes- guest artist or presentation l5 minutes- meet the artist. Please support our Guitar Night program on May 8 at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair. The event features young, up-and-coming musicians performing classical and juz guitar: Nick Giordano, Brian Barone, Anand Krishnamurthy. Features Dan Lavoie on harp guitar. Trumpets has a fine menu for dinner, dessert or just a drink. Since our season ends in April, we have included membership renewal forms for the 2007-2008 season. Our new season will begin in September and we hope to bring our membership up to 100! Please help us by introducing the society to your friends and neighbors who have an interest in music. The membership tier is restructured with all fees $30- this is not an increase from least season for adult members. That's less than $4 per concerilmeeting...the best deal found anywhere! So, please don't hesitate to include a donation with your membership renewal or in our donation jar during the meetings.
