The World is Coming to the Center of the Universe!
The UCI Road World Championships are coming to Hanover County, and we anticipate that this will
have an impact on Ashland throughout the event. On September 23rd, the Men’s Elite Time Trials
will come to Hanover County, running from Kings Dominion down Route 301 to Richmond. While
this route will not go through the Town of Ashland, the closure of Route 301 for 3 ½ hours during
the event and traffic attending the Fan Zones at each Hanover location will likely have an impact
here in Town. We do not know exactly what this impact will be, but our major hotels are expecting
to sell out during the event, and we have been told to anticipate additional traffic and visitors for
the duration (September 18-27), with local increases likely on September 23rd.
The Ashland Police Department will be monitoring the situation, and will have staff and officers on
hand to be ready should issues arise. Businesses and residents are encouraged to be prepared to
expect increased traffic volumes on Interstate 95 and Route 1 during the course of the entire
event. Officials from VDOT are aware of the traffic projections, and will make changes as necessary
to construction schedules and traffic patterns to best accommodate increased volumes.
Tips for Businesses and Residents:
 Expect increased traffic on I-95, especially September 23rd
 Ensure that staffing and inventory levels account for some increases in volume throughout
the UCI Event, and especially on September 23rd
 Restaurants and Retailers may see an increase in foot traffic
 Town residents should consider leaving a few minutes early when traveling, in case of traffic
issues
 There will be a special Ashland Street Party on Saturday, September 19th – Come out and
join in the fun from 6:30-11 pm at 211 South Railroad Avenue, Ashland (next to the Ashland

You have probably noticed the Ashland Main Street Association’s new Bike Gardens popping up all
over town! This initiative has been an exciting way to join together in celebrating our community
and this exciting world event. In addition, the Town has taken a number of steps to make sure we
put our best foot forward, including road restriping, repaving and cleaning around major routes.
We encourage all Ashland residents, businesses and property owners to use this opportunity to
