This is of the man whom made community radio in Ashland, Oregon a reality. Our Beloved Brother and Radio Engineer Michael McGuire, passed from this earthly existance on Saturday Feb. 28th, 2015. Winter 2015 What Is This Community Radio, Anyway? by Connie Saldana Here’s what makes KSKQ such a unique and wonderful listening experience: • • we will miss you dearly • • KSKQ’s Carson Bench and MRG Foundation’s Executive Director Sharon Gary-Smith Don Wertheimer and Dennis Remick are joined in the studio by Marvin Woodard, Multi-Cultural Resource Center and Diversity Scholarship Coordinator at Southern Oregon University • • Over fifty programmers sharing their passion for music or spoken words; A mission to promote social, environmental and economic justice; A stage for diverse voices; Eclectic collection of thousands of songs in a wide range of genres—many not heard on other local stations; Interviews highlighting local issues, events and nonprofit organizations; Thought-provoking syndicated KSKQ operates under the auspices of the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon, a nonprofit 501(C)3 Organization • • • • programming (such as Democracy Now, Alternative News, This Way Out). Local short features such as “Climate Capsules,” “Kids Unlimited Radio,” “KSKQ News Collaborative.” In depth on-site coverage of local non-mainstream events. There is nothing else like it on the dial. Ability to support community organizations through Public Service Announcements, with recording and live broadcasts of their important events. Close partnership with other alternative print and television media for Independent Media Week in April. Ongoing sharing with Rogue Valley Community Press and Rogue Valley Messenger through KSKQ News Collaborative. • • • KSKQ is one of only three independentlyowned stations in the Rogue Valley. Independent media is indispensable to democracy. Unlike the other giant non-commercial station in our area, we receive no federal funding. KSKQ sponsors and collaborates with other non-profits to put on musical events, featuring local artists, for the enjoyment of the community and to raise funds for the station. All these are what sets KSKQ Community Radio apart from any other local listening experience-commercial and even Public Radio. Continued on Page 2 A Year in Review from your Station Manager Greeting KSKQ Family, Friends, and Supporters! Today is Thanksgiving and I cannot think of a better day to be writing you about this last year at KSKQ Community Radio. First, KSKQ is celebrating its 10th year anniversary. This incredible feat was only accomplished by the dedicated hearts that nurtured this seed of service for our community. Many among us have given 100s of hours, not only to produce a show, but also to keep the doors open, to raise funds for daily basics, to keep up and install much needed equipment, to train others, and to finally bring KSKQ up to full power. We honor all those who have come thru the “green door” here at KSKQ and I want to especially remember to big hearts that gave regularly to KSKQ over a decade who are no longer with us. Michael McGuire, Grandma Mitzi Rabin, and Lenny “Tone” Goldberg moved on to the “Big Radio Land in the Sky” this year. They gave so much to KSKQ, I cannot write it all here. We give thanks to all you gave and miss you dearly. areas in Jackson County that may be able to hear us, but haven’t realized it, yet. We had another year of important equipment upgrades. We sold off some old equipment and purchased new “Remote Broadcasting” equipment, which gave us the opportunity to live broadcast portions of the 7th Annual Beacon Hill Blues Festival! We also just recently upgrade our “Archive/ Streaming” Computer which will give us more security and better performance. Sincerely thankful, Michael Mulhall KSKQ Station-Manager On this day I would really like to thank all who keep KSKQ on the air, from the volunteers to the financial supporters. Your support for independent, listener-sponsored, non-commercial, alternate format Community Radio is helping us all build a sustainable future for all. Now that we have been broadcasting at 560 watts, we have had an increased interest in KSKQ! From new DJ’s/programmers, volunteers, our new News Collaborative, to our weekday morning and afternoon drive time shows and new local business underwriters. You might have seen our real-time broadcast entry in the Ashland 4th of July Parade, our booth at Medford Multicultural Fair, or table at a number of community events sponsored by our social justice partners. We are beginning to expand our outreach efforts to attract listeners in other KSKQ 89.5 FM - 330 East Hersey St, Suite 2 - Ashland, OR 97520 - 541-482-3999 - www.kskq.org 1 PO Box 67 Medford, OR 97501 Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon KSKQ 89.5 FM K Continued from Page 1 How does it operate? Structure: KSKQ’s license is held by the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon (MCASO)—a nonprofit focused on creating appreciation for and the diverse cultures in our area with a 20-year history in the Rogue Valley. The Board has oversight and administrative responsibility for the station and appoints Management Committee members. The Management Committee oversees day to day operations of KSKQ. Two positions, Station Manager and Program Director are volunteers who receive a small monthly stipend for their dedicated efforts. Presence: KSKQ broadcasts 24/7 every day of the year at 89.5 FM. The signal reaches from Rogue River to Weed, California, from the Applegate Valley to the mountain lakes. Those outside the broadcasting area can stream live at www.kskq.org. Many KSKQ programs archive their shows on archive.org for future listening. The studios are located at 330 E. Hersey St., #2, in Ashland. To contact KSKQ, call 541482-3999 or e-mail us at [email protected]. History: KSKQ is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2015. That is 10 years of constant growth from first a Low Power FM (LPFM) construction permit, starting with three years of only internet streaming till an antenna could be built on Old Hwy 99 South (not far below Callahan’s, where it broadcast at 100 watts for four years. In 2011, KSKQ was able to move its antenna across the valley to Table Mountain, above Hyatt Lake. The new antenna is located on an old fire lookout tower, owned by local entrepreneur, Kathy Uhtoff. From there, the transmitter broadcasts with a signal of 560 watts. KSKQ’s history is the story of the value of love and hard-headed tenacity of dedicated volunteers, who believe in the importance of independent media to democracy. Thanks, also, to Programmers who—in addition to creating their shows—also donate financially each month for the operation of the station! Memberships: KSKQ does share something in common with public radio—we count on the support of our listeners to pay the monthly bills. As an allvolunteer station, our bills are certainly much lower than our neighbors’, but, they are just as critical to our operation. The equipment necessary to run a radio station is expensive, so KSKQ operates mostly on used and donated equipment. However, our biggest need is to be able to pay our dedicated staff people a real wage. This is why we have twice-ayear pledge drives and membership mailings. This is our first (hopefully) KSKQ Annual Report. Please donate! Underwriting: KSKQ also supports its operations through underwriting—sponsorships by local businesses. If you have a business or organization whose mission is in line with KSKQ’s, and who would like to reach out an eclectic audience to get the word out, please consider purchasing underwriting. Our rates are the most reasonable in the valley. Currently a business receives at least one live read a day, plus recorded announcements during automated play hours for $250 a quarter, $1,000 a year. These rates are planned to increase next year, once we start our own KSKQ outreach strategy into Medford and beyond. We hope that you will continue to enjoy and support our unique community resource--only available in Southern Oregon, USA—KSKQ 89.5 FM! Best wishes for a peaceful holiday season, The KSKQ Management Committee 2 Our missions The mission of the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon is “To serve as a catalyst in the community, promoting understanding and appreciation between cultures, by creating cross-cultural educational opportunities where people of all backgrounds can interact in an environment of goodwill.” KSKQ's mission is “To produce community radio that empowers the residents of the Rogue Valley, builds sustainable and resilient communities through the exchange of ideas, and celebrates cultural diversity.” KSKQ Leadership: Board of the Multicultural Association of Southern Oregon: President, Don Senter; Vice President, Carson Bench; Secretary , Rob Engorn; Treasurer, Connie Saldaña; Athena Hartley, Milo Salgado, Betzabe “Mina” Turner” [The MCASO Board is currently recruiting 2 new members]. S K Q 8 9 . 5 F Oregon Community Media This statewide coalition of sister community radio stations held its first organizational meeting right here in Ashland. The group ranges from new low power fm radio stations just getting started to KBOO, Portland’s “grandmother” of community radio. Now Oregon Community Media meets twice a year, hosted around the state by different stations. You may have enjoyed the live simulcast of the entire Portland Waterfront Blues Festival Fourth of July Weekend, or one of the collaborative issue pieces with contributions from multiple stations, or live election-night coverage last November, updating listeners on numbers and issues of importance in six counties. OCM, in turn, is an active participant in a northwest region group of non-profit radio, print, television and film producers, called Cascade Media Convergence. Grassroots media are finding the value in supporting each other during times of challenging finances, changing technology and competition from commercial media outlets. M Want that unusual holiday gift? How about a “Power to the People tee shirt?” Only $15.00 White with black lettering. To order, contact Carson Bench, [email protected] About the music by Carson Bench It goes without saying that a community radio station run by volunteers is going to offer a wide array of musical styles and tastes. Many people would describe KSKQ as having a little something for everyone. There would be no KSKQ Community Radio without our dedicated programmers and volunters! Holly Lórien Adams, Gill Anderson, Regina Ayars, Martin Ball, Sabrina Baugh, Carson Bench, Ian Bezzant, Nicole “Star” Brady, Wes Brain, Rik Burns, Bob Canape, Mark “Marko” Cook, Cammy Davis, Clay Davidson, Matthew Dedrick, Alex Delgadillo, Lori Duckworth, Gary Einhorn, Brian El, Kayla Elrod, Cyrus Emerson, Rob Engorn, Richard Felker, Gabriele Fellows, Laura Fergusun, Alex Ganos, Jared Garcia, Scott Garriott, Lenny Goldberg Goldberg, Marc Gregory, Josh Gross, Jupiter Hamilton, Andrew Harrison, Athena Hartley, Genova Lilly Hartley, Ray Hessel, Jason Houk, Ellen Hufft, Shiloh Jackson, Cortland Jennings, Ariana Johnson, Ginger Johnson, Reade King, Julie Lockhart, Keith Mansur, Gregg Marchese, Jonathan Meadows, Chris Miller, Maya Moore, Taylor Moore, Michael Mulhall, David Munson, Michael Niemann, Sean Nipper, Rachel Nixon, Michael Northam, Aletha Nowitzky, Adam Pesak, Cathy Prazenica, Dennis Remick, Tom Romano, Moshe Ross, Warren RusselL, Connie Saldana, Dillon Sage, Maya Seligman, Adam Senf, Deanna Waters Senf, Suzanne Severeid, Charlie Stanton, Neil Stewart, Steven Swanson, Michael Tolver, David Tourzan, Sam Tune, Carol Voisin, Dan Wahpehpah, William Welton, Don Wertheimer, Anna Wild, Stefan Windroth. KSKQ 89.5 FM - 330 East Hersey St, Suite 2 - Ashland, OR 97520 - 541-482-3999 - www.kskq.org I have a different way of looking at it. I insist that KSKQ has a whole lot of something for the right kind of person. The fact that you are a regular listener shows that you are one of those open minded people, a musical omnivore, so to speak. Like Frank Zappa said, “The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it is open.” For the open minded individual life is a journey of constant learning and discovery. At KSKQ, it is our aim to always be adding to that life of discovery. KSKQ offers music from around the world from many different decades and cultures. The KSKQ listener gets to enjoy Jazz, Latin, Classical, World, Country, Folk, Rock, AvantGarde, Electronica, Ambient, and Reggae in all of their sub-divided labels. KSKQ receives the latest releases from modern artists before their music even hits the market for public consumption. KSKQ also digs deep into the past. How cool is it to hear something slightly familiar and then discover that the song had been sampled by modern artists? The greatest thing about music is that transcends language and culture barriers. Music moves the soul. Thanks for supporting community radio. We promise to keep working hard at providing programming that enriches. Carson Bench 3
