Save the date for Chrysalis’ 6th Annual Gala Breakfast in Edmonton It’s 6:30 am, the alarm is going off and you’re ready to hit the snooze for another few minutes of sleep before getting up to get ready for the day. Instead of hitting the snooze to try and finish that crazy dream, what if you got up knowing you could help make a difference within your community and the lives of hundreds of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Would you be willing to spare an hour before starting your work day to spend with us over breakfast while listening to some of the most inspiring people you may ever meet? We all love to sleep in but the spirit of community is what drives so many Edmontonians. It’s what makes us feel like our city is one of the best in the world. And it’s one that has made a huge impact on those individuals whom we have served at Chrysalis over the years. The 6th Annual Chrysalis Gala Fundraising Breakfast is rapidly approaching and we want you to be part of something special. inspiring individuals whom, along with Chrysalis supports, have been able to find their calling within our community, the direction our organization is forging towards and how you can truly make a difference to so many people right in your own neighbourhood. While monetary donations are always appreciated, we have also developed numerous employment and volunteer opportunities for those we serve thanks to this event and welcomed a host of new volunteers, staff members and board members into the Chrysalis family. Ch-Ch-Changes... Change is a part of everyday life and that is no different here at Chrysalis. We are constantly evolving to ensure that our organization is able to provide new and innovative programming but to also ensure that every individual is receiving the highest quality service we can provide. That said, thanks in part to Vision 2013, our plan to re-develop the way Chrysalis delivers service to those accessing it (detailed in the Spring 2013 From the Wings newsletter), we have re-branded our program streams. Employment Services, formerly Vocational Services, and Community Endeavours, formerly Alternates to Employment Services (AES), are the new program stream names. In depth detail of how these changes affect our service delivery will be made available in new marketing materials currently being produced and new descriptions of the services will be highlighted on our website in the very near future. Page 1 Annual Art Shows Mark Your Calendars! One of our most highly regarded events held throughout the year is just around the corner. Artists participating in the Chrysalis Art Program are hard at work building their portfolio and putting the final touches on some amazingly unique artwork which will be on display available for purchase when we open our doors for our 6th Annual Art Show and Sale presented by Scotiabank. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the talented artists participating in the Chrysalis Art Program and help re-stock our supplies to ensure that the creative juices will continue to flow throughout the art studio. The 6th Annual Art Show and Sale presented by Scotiabank will be held on Friday, April 25 at Chrysalis Edmonton, located at 13325 St. Albert Trail, with doors open to the public from 6:00-9:00 p.m.. If the previous few years are any indication, and you are planning on attending this showcase we suggest you arrive early to ensure you don’t miss out on some of the pieces that will be purchased shortly after the show begins. In 2013, 88 of the 120 paintings on display were sold generating over $10,000 to be shared between the artists and the art program. At Chrysalis Calgary, our 4th Annual Art Show and Sale presented by Scotiabank will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 6:00 -9:00 p.m. at the Windsor Park Community Association, located at 5304 6th St. SW in Calgary. This will be the second straight year Calgary hosts their Art Show and Sale outside the Chrysalis facility due to large crowds and high demand for the artwork! Partnership Profile A new feature that we have started using our blog at chrysalis.ca is entitled Partnership Profiles, in which we detail one of the amazing companies, businesses, non-profit organizations or community sites which have formed relationships with Chrysalis over the years and provided opportunities for the individuals whom we serve to make a difference within their own community. Our first Partnership Profile will feature long standing employer, sponsor and Chrysalis supporter in Edmonton, Fortis Alberta! In 1992, then Trans-Alta Utilities and Chrysalis were able to come to an agreement to employ three Chrysalis individuals in their return department. Accompanied by a Chrysalis staff member, our individuals make the trip to the Acheson, AB facility each weekday to help salvage some of the return materials that crews would bring back from different sites. Our working crew, now referred to as Reconditioning Assistants, help recondition underground electrical wires, create the shipping pallets used to ship inventory and prepare materials for shipping. From day one, our individuals have been treated as part of the team at Fortis and are included in all company activities, staff functions and events. Fortis Alberta is widely Both events are open to anyone and everyone so come on out and support our artists! regarded as one of the most inclusive employers Chrysalis has ever dealt with and continue to go out of their way to ensure our individuals get the same treatment as any other employee at Fortis. After 22 years, the relationship with Fortis has enabled several new faces from Chrysalis to work within their facility and become gainfully employed. While faces have changed during that time; one of the original Chrysalis hires is still working very hard at Fortis and has no plans of making a career change! In fact, Fortis recently held an anniversary function for this long standing employee to honour her for the years of service and dedication she has provided in her over 20 years with the company. Currently, four Chrysalis individuals are working at Fortis Alberta and each one of them has stated that they are in no rush to leave! Fortis Alberta has provided an opportunity for these individuals to realize their dream of finding meaningful employment in a stable, safe and supportive environment. Thank you Fortis Alberta for believing in the abilities of our individuals and for your continued support of Chrysalis! More details for both events can be found in our blog at www.chrysalis.ca To L e a r n m o r e a b o u t F o r t i s Alberta, visit their website, www.fortisalberta.com or follow them on twitter @FortisAlberta Hard at work while on site at Fortis Alberta Page 2 Thank You For Your Support! Every year Chrysalis hosts several events at which we ask for supports from our community. Be it the Annual Gala Fundraising Breakfasts which have earned us more than $600,000 in the past five years to put towards future enhancements of our programs and services, the Annual Art Shows which have helped put our artists on the map in local art communities, or the other events or programs that need the helping hands of volunteers, our community has always been there for us. And each year we like to say thank you to those who have supported us in some way, shape or form throughout the year. February played host to our Annual Appreciation Events in both Edmonton and Calgary this year. The Appreciation Event is hosted by the Chrysalis Charitable Foundation each year to say thank you to those who have helped make a difference at Chrysalis and to those whom we serve. We opened the doors to staff, donors, volunteers, sites and board members to join in on a casual night of fun, food and entertainment. The Edmonton event took place on Friday, February 7 in the basement and Art Studio. By inviting our guests to our facility, our supporters are able to see their contributions in action. Even though programming is not going on during the event, we do offer a small sample of the difference they have helped create by offering their support. We were able to showcase our artists and our art studio in Edmonton, but also introduce the new photography program that has been running since June thanks to a volunteer who came to us after the Gala Breakfast with this idea. The three hour open house welcomed between 125-150 people who enjoyed a great selection of hot and cold appetizers, a nice array of wine and sparkling juices and live entertainment from local indie band, Two Bears North. In Calgary, the event was held at the Chrysalis facility on Friday, February 28. This was our inaugural Appreciation Event in Calgary and was a lovely, intimate evening with about 30 people in attendance. Food and beverage was set up in the boardroom and staff members toured guests throughout the facility showing off the different program areas. Guests were also treated to an amazing acoustic show from local artist, Marc Rivest, who played a number of classic tunes on his guitar. It was great to see staff, board members, volunteers, donors and their families brave less than ideal conditions on both nights to mingle amongst one another as we got to say thanks to everyone who helps to make our organization what it is today. CEO’s Address As usual, the latest edition of From The Wings is filled with news of past and future activities at Chrysalis which keep everyone not only busy but more importantly focused on emerging directions which come through key learnings from these activities and projects. Spring brings renewal in many ways and for Chrysalis it is yet another time when we actively explore more opportunities for continuous growth and improvement throughout the organization. Spring 2014 is no exception as the teams in Edmonton and Calgary work at maintaining and enhancing already well established community partnerships while exploring and building new ones, and new opportunities. It is through these partnerships and the unique opportunities they provide that the individuals whom we serve benefit from the wide range of inclusive experiences that allow them to demonstrate the skills, talents and abilities they are eager to share with society. As we are blessed with these partnerships, we are blessed also with a very special group of volunteers. Volunteer week begins April 7 and this is a time to say thank you in as many ways as possible to those who give so generously of their time and resources to help Chrysalis be all that it can be in so many different and unique ways. We are incredibly fortunate to have an outstanding group of people who work with us throughout the year on both the Chrysalis Society and Foundation Boards to ensure Chrysalis is organizationally and fiscally sound. Other excellent contributions come from those who volunteer to share their talents and expertise working with our individuals to help them develop their own talents through Art, photography, music, theatre arts, cooking, literacy, and other areas within programs and services, and there are others who assist us at events, casinos and other such activities . None of the Chrysalis accomplishments could be achieved without any one of these valued and much appreciated volunteers who deserve a huge thank you from all of us. As you can see from this newsletter, we have many upcoming events in both Edmonton and Calgary to look forward to and we hope to see you there along with our volunteers. Thanks again to all of you, Lynn Groves Hautmann President and CEO Chrysalis: An Alberta Society for Citizens with Disabilities Page 3 Chrysalis Facility Closure Notice As a means of ensuring that the individuals whom we serve are receiving the absolute best experience possible, Chrysalis is pleased to be offering a Staff Development day for our employees in Calgary on Monday May 12, 2014 and in Edmonton on Tuesday May 13, 2014. This means that both facilities will be closed to accommodate the Development Day schedule. Chrysalis Calgary will be closed Monday May 12, 2014 and Chrysalis Edmonton will be closed on Tuesday May 13, 2014. This Staff Development Day is very important and essential to maintaining quality services for our Chrysalis participants. Staff Development is a critical step in maintaining our current staff members training and knowledge in the rehabilitation field. Should you have any questions please contact the Chrysalis office. Chrysalis Musical Theatre Program As we continue to expand and enhance the arts-based programs we offer at Chrysalis, we are very excited to announce, under the guidance of lead instructor Michele Miller, the creation of the Chrysalis Musical Theatre Program to debut in Edmonton this March! The Chrysalis Musical Theatre Program will teach musical theatre techniques to adult individuals with, but not limited to, varying physical and cognitive abilities. These students will be taught singing, dancing, acting, puppetry, and stage presence. Our goal is to create a dynamic, fun-filled environment where students receive a generous dose of musical theatre techniques that contribute to building self-esteem. We believe that for students to excel as individuals, learning these skills in a supportive, harmonious classroom setting will, thus, foster new friendships and earn the respect of both their peers and the public at large. This 15-week course will run every Tuesday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Chrysalis multi-purpose room starting March 18th and conclude on n June 24th. At the end of the course, the students will perform in front of family and friends to show off their new skills! The most exciting part of this announcement is the fact that WE WANT YOU to be a part of this ground breaking program! We are looking for about 12 volunteers from the community (theatre background not required) to assist our students and learn right along side them! If you are interested in receiving more information about the Chrysalis Musical Theatre Program or would like to sign up to volunteer in the course, please contact Matt Mandrusiak at 780.482.0348 or via email at [email protected] Board of Directors Society Patty Whiting—Chair Robert Baldauf Lois Cassie Nancy Cumming Cathy Evanochko Andrew Laycock Lorree Magee Shafyn Manji Lorri D Martin Garth Norris Kristen Read Chris Yatscoff Foundation Mary Pat Barry—Chair Paul Brown Leona Colijn Allison Dennis Ray Gosselin Debra Lawrence Scott MacEachran Mavis McKay Krista Mitton Melanie Nakatsui Sandy Parravano Maureen Royer Jamie Young Contributors Lynn Groves Hautmann Matt Mandrusiak From the Wings Twitter.com/ChrysalisAB Facebook.com/ChryalisAlberta Would you prefer to receive our From the Wings newsletter by email?
