Alumni Couples Event
Jan. 2010
A special evening of great food, atmosphere and socializing took place on November 28, 2009, when alumni
couples gathered together in the Heritage Lobby. These couples have the unique distinction of both being alumni of
St. Joseph High School.
Much like a specific class reunion or an alumni cheerleader being asked to cheer at Homecoming, not every
one was specifically invited. Only those from that unique group were asked to participate in this event.
Fr. Charles Hofschulte led a special prayer at center court of the gymnasium named after him. He reminded
these couples of their special connection to the school and their committment to each other.
After munching on fabulous appetizers of barbequed shrimp, asparagus, linguisa and baby back ribs, the
couples were treated to steak, chicken, a gourmet salad, bread and beans and delicious chocolate cake. A HUGE
thank you to Alumni Board members - Robert Bonilla, Mike Epperly and Trish Combs for their awesome bbq
skills and help setting up and cleaning up for this event.
Throughout the evening, pictures were snapped by St. Joe alumnus John Silva ‘01 of DarkLight Photography.
Random group shots and couples shots were taken along with the below picture. Thank you John.
At the end of the evening, several couples were ready to plan another dinner and already working on a date
when more couples would be available to attend. Thanksgiving weekend was kind of tough, with many couples
out of town or they had company in town. If you were unable to attend, we’re sorry you missed out on such a nice
evening, but we hope you can make the next Alumni Couples Evening!
St. Joseph High School Alumni Couples bow their heads in
prayer at the Alumni Couples event on November 28, 2009.

SPECIAL GOODBYES
REMEMBRANCES OF FATHER CAMPION ASPINALL
Former teacher and Dean of Students at St. Joseph High School, Fr.
Campion passed away in his family home in Blackpool, England on
September 28, 2009.
Parish Secretary—Kiki Musolf Domingues ‘69 remembers him.
I’ve know Father Campion for about 45 years. I became
Father Campion’s secretary when I was a Junior in High School,
around 16 years of age. He was the Dean of Discipline at St. Joseph
High School. There are two things I remember most at that time. The
first was his calling in the boys that had misbehaved in class. He
would punish them by closing up his office with them in it and light
up a cigar. Of course I was asked to leave. The boys would come out
very, very pale after about fifteen minutes or so. The second thing
I remember about that period was, since I was his secretary, I was
somewhat privileged. On Fridays at noon he would ask me to go fill
up his car with gas so he could make a quick get-away after school to
Tijuana to the bullfights. I figured he’d never know if I took the car
to go see my boyfriend in town. I was always late to my next class on
those Fridays, but was never questioned because he was the one who
had sent me off campus.
He later married me and that boyfriend I would see in 1970.
He celebrated our 25th Anniversary Mass and we had hoped he would
be around next year to celebrate our 40th. I had joked with him that I
didn’t think John (my husband) would survive for the 50th.
He came to St. Louis de Montfort Church the same time I
did, in 1991, after my older son, John (‘90) had died. He was always
very protective of me and hovered over me those first few years.
We became fast friends (as friendly as he could get with a “bloody
woman”) and he became my confessor, my confidant, my sounding
board. He has watched my other two children Katie(‘93) and Brian
(‘97) grow up to become kind and successful adults. He would always
say to me that “Johnny was up in heaven praying for them to turn out
okay, so as to not give me anymore grief.” He was always very proud
of their accomplishments.
August of this year was the very first time that he ever
came to my house. We had dinner because his niece and nephew in
law were here from Australia. We had a great time bar-b-cueing the
fish that my husband John and his nephew Tony had caught the day
before. Everyone had a few beers and wine with dinner, however
Father Campion refused the wine. It was a good thing because that
night they had set up a DUI check point station and he was stopped.
He said it was the grace of God that he didn’t take that glass at dinner.
I loved him very much and will miss him everyday. When you spend
more time at work than you do at home, your workmates become
family….and that’s how he made us all feel; that we were family.

**A Note from Geraldine May**
By now most everyone probably knows that I have retired. After 24 years of very intense preparation for
classes I thoroughly enjoyed teaching, I feel the need to
have some time for myself and to regroup. Since a lot
of my heart and soul has gone into my job, this has been
a difficult decision for me to make. I love the students I
have taught over these many years and being in the classroom.
The administration graciously honored my wishes to
not make an announcement till after the previous school
year had ended. I wanted my classes to be “business
as usual,” and to be candid, after I made the decision I
found the thought of leaving teaching to be disconcerting. Whether my teaching days are over, I do not know
at this time, but my time at St. Joseph interacting with
the students, parents and other staff members has been
splendid.
*The Alumni Office was sworn to secrecy regarding Mrs.
May’s retirement from St. Joe’s and I didn’t receive the
okay to put it in print until shortly after the last AlumKnight went out.

SJHS STUDENT ATHLETES
In the 11 years I have worked at St Joseph High School, I have never seen so many athletes receive
scholarships to play at the next level. To date, five student athletes have signed letters of intent to play a sport
at the collegiate level. Signing - Analise Riezebos (Basketball) Cal State Chico, Erica Brannon (Swim)
Oregon State, Maddie Mastrup (Swim) Colorado State, Mariah Cochiolo (Softball) Cal Poly, SLO and
Danielle Gillaspy (Golf) Pepperdine. Additional students are expected to sign in other sports within the next
few months.
ALUMNI BASKETBALL
Participating in the annual Alumni
Boys’ Basketball game this year were
- Pat Cusack ‘82, John Wesner ‘90,
Brett Krause ‘99, Brandon Merlo,
Cody Sexton and Kevin Buchanan
‘05, Brian McConkey ‘06, Shawn
Winters and Patrick Cusack ‘07,
Vincent Brunello, Dominic Brunello,
Brannon Adlesh and Nick Sanchez
‘08 and Ryan Smalley ‘09.
Once again the Alumni dominated in
a game that pitted age and experience
vs. youth and a little less experience.
This game is always a good time, not
only for the Alumni and current Varsity team, but for the crowd cheering
in the stands. There’s always a lot of
kidding around on the court and it’s
always great to have the Alumni back
on campus.
IT’S GREAT TO BE A KNIGHT!
This past fall we’ve had some incredible team and individual
performances by our student athletes. A couple that stand out
are the Varsity Football team, the Boys’ Water Polo Team and
individual Cross Country runner, Quetta Peinado.
On the football field, the Knights team recorded a first for the
Knights. Congratulations to the Varsity Football team on their
perfect regular season record of 10-0. The Knights went to
the semi-finals, losing to the team that eventually won the CIF
title.
Boys’ Water Polo qualified for the CIF playoffs for the first
time in school history. Although the team bowed out in the
first round of CIF, this was only the second year that St. Joe’s
has had a team and the future is bright for Boys’ Water Polo.
In Girls’ Cross Country, our team advanced to the CIF Southern Section Finals with runner Quetta Peinado winning the Los
Padres League and qualifying at the CIF finals for State Finals.
The Boys’ Alumni Basketball team poses
for a picture after their victory against the
current varsity team on December 23, 2009.
The undefeated 2009 Varsity Football team and
undisputed LPAL Champions.

Knights, Wines & Roses
2009
The 2010 Knights, Wines and Roses Event is scheduled for June 19, 2010. You won’t
want to miss out on what has become one of the best wine tasting events on the Central
Coast.
Last year, Knights, Wines and Roses had over 30 combined wineries and breweries
participate in this fun event, and this year is already shaping up to be our best event ever.
If you own, manage or work at a winery or brewery and would like to showcase your
beverage at this year’s event, please contact the Alumni Office at (805) 937-2038 x156 or
[email protected] and Karen Jaeckels will be happy to answer any questions
you might have.
Or, if you just want to attend and have a great time, tickets will go on sale in the beginning
of May. June 19th is Father’s Day weekend, so why not treat Dad to a great gift of
wonderful wines, beer and delicious food! All for the great price of $35 per ticket.
The majority of proceeds earned from the event this year will go to tuition assistance for
those families currently attending St. Joe’s that are having financial difficulties.

ST. JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY AND STAFF WISH LIST
This wish list really comes about due to the fact that every faculty and staff member took a cut not only in their
department budgets, but also personally in order to help those families struggling to keep their children here at St.
Joseph High School in these tough economic times. Items that normally would have been upgraded were put off
for another year. Some of these items are listed below.
New and updated computers are always on the the list. If you have the means or access to provide newer computers, please consider donating to your alma mater. As we all know, within a few years a computer is pretty
much outdated. In order to keep up with (or be ahead of) other schools, technology needs to be at our fingertips.
Specialty items include: Sponsorship for Professional Growth Conferences, Overhead projectors (3 of these),
knitting or weaving yarn that people don’t want, a kiln for ceramics, a laminator, a Kairos Laptop, 10 Mikasa
(MIW5500) water polo balls, a Mikasa oversized water polo ball bag, new keyboards, latch strong storage containers for ASB closet, portable USB external hard drive for campus ministry lap top computer, wall maps (both
World & U.S.), digital cameras with video capture capabilities, barometers, hot plates and scales (to .01g) and one
very unique wish is for help from a computer volunteer = someone with the knowledge to train on new programs
and technical issues.
