Spring 2016 Issue JACKSONVILLE CHILDREN’S CHORUS NEWSLETTER DID YOU KNOW? The full cost of a child’s yearlong experience as a JCC singer is not completely covered by tuition fees. The JCC fundraises the remainder of the cost and passes that savings along to our singers’ parents. 83% of every dollar the JCC raises directly funds our programs. The other 17% provides administration and funds our ability to tell our story to people like you who care about our work. Thank you to you, our supporters! Dear Friend of the Chorus, As Northeast Florida’s children prepare for the closure of the 2015-2016 school year, many are also preparing to enter college in the fall. Here at the JCC, this is a time when our high school singers reflect on what they’ve learned over the past few years during their participation in our choirs. They have learned musical notes and music theory, to carry a tune both by themselves and in harmony, and to work with their friends and fellow singers to create excellence in their artistic product. One thing all our JCC singers know for certain is that all their years of hard work yields artistic excellence – perhaps the most important lesson of all, and a lesson that they will carry with them in the future during their studies as undergraduates. Best wishes, Darren Dailey, Artistic and Executive Director Jacksonville Children’s Chorus 1 Board of Directors: Richard Hadden, Chair Chantelle Quick, Vice Chair Jevon Bartley, Secretary Monique Thompson, Treasurer Nick Courtney, Past Chair Kevin Copeland Lee Haramis Randall Onstead Daniel Popky Heather Solanka Amanda Warford Videll Artistic Staff: Darren Dailey Artistic and Executive Director Carolyn Tuttle Treble Choir Conductor Steve Chapman Young Men’s Chorus Assistant Conductor Melissa Barnes Lyric Choir Conductor Tommy Shapard Training Choir Conductor Susanne Dailey Training Choir Conductor Sachiko Frampton Accompanist for Concert and Touring Choirs Penny Sylvester Vocal Exploration Instructor Ashley Novak Choreographer Administrative Staff: Darren Dailey Artistic and Executive Director Holly Hammond Development Director Carolyn Audije Marketing and Public Relations Director Diana Wooten Program Coordinator Katherine Boling Accounting Assistant 2 Bravo! Newsletter - Spring 2016 PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE Thank You JCC When we moved to Jacksonville in 2014, we wanted to ensure that our daughters were going to be able to continue to be supported in their love of music. In looking on the internet, we discovered the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus. We were truly impressed with the JCC. As our oldest daughter Katharine’s great musical love is voice, we only hoped that she might be lucky enough to succeed with an audition. Our wishes came true, and JCC has been a wonderful gift to Katharine and to us. The musical opportunities that Katharine has had have been extraordinary, and the instruction, commitment and discipline she has learned are priceless. And, to top it all off, she has had the opportunity to perform on stage with Kristin Chenoweth, The American Boychoir, and the Hampton University Choir. The outcomes from the JCC for Katharine are much more than the performances. Character development is really the greatest outcome. Through the sense of professionalism that pervades all aspects of the chorus, Katharine has become a stronger leader, a better friend, and of course a better musician. As Katharine begins the college search process, we know that these strengths will serve her well in college and in life. We can’t thank Darren Dailey and the entire Jacksonville Children’s Chorus organization enough for the gifts they have given to Katharine. Leelee and Kevin Conklin Parents of Katharine A SINGER’S STORY Katharine Conklin, Touring Choir Performing with the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus has been an amazing experience. The Chorus has given me an opportunity to make new friends in a unique environment, and the chances to perform in various venues with all kinds of artists. In September we were asked to sing the National Anthem for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and in November we had our big concert with Kristin Chenoweth! I can proudly say that I have sung in five languages in less than an hour. Being a part of the Touring Choir and working with Mr. Dailey has taught me a lot. Rehearsals are long and the work is hard, but I have improved my sight singing, understanding of music composition, and singing technique thanks to the Chorus. JCC has been a huge influence as I begin to look at colleges because I am now certain that I want to study music seriously. WHERE DO THEY GO FROM HERE? Brandon Brandon has been singing with the JCC for five years. His JCC experience has prepared him for college by instilling a sense of accomplishment in music, and also in life. He will attend Rider University in the fall. “JCC gave me the social and musicianship skills to be successful in my art. The Chorus has also introduced me to many influential community leaders who have guided me and given me examples to live by.” Brooke Brooke has been singing with the JCC since the third grade. She will attend the University of Central Florida this fall. “The Chorus has provided opportunities I wouldn’t have had, otherwise. I have toured nationally and internationally with the JCC, to Italy, Ireland, Canada, and Greece. These experiences inspired me to pursue International Studies as my college major. I’ve met incredible artists such as Amy Grant and Kristin Chenoweth and I’ve developed friendships that will last for years. The JCC has become my family; I thank Darren Dailey and the JCC staff for helping me grow as a musician and mature into the young adult I am today.” Erin Erin - a three-year JCC member - feels prepared for college because of her time in the JCC. She’s learned to stand out in a crowd, perform with grace and confidence, and sing out loud. She will attend Florida State University this summer. “JCC taught me to be confident. I have always been a quiet person; now I’m comfortable creating new relationships. I have made so many great friends in The Chorus, and I will never forget them. JCC prepared me for college by teaching me the importance of personal accountability. I learned I must complete my own work on my own time to ensure that the group performs at its best. These experiences will stay with me throughout college and beyond. I am so honored to have been a part of such an amazing group.” Jasmin Jasmin has been singing with the JCC for five years and has become an excellent musician and an articulate young lady. She will finish her A.A. degree from St. Johns River State College this spring and will enlist in the Air Force. “The JCC taught me to be disciplined, respectful, and open-minded. These qualities have better conditioned me for college and life in general. I’ve learned never to lower my personal expectations and to lead others to do the same. As a traveling chorus, we are taught to respect other cultures and one another. I became more open-minded about the world through our songs. I’m sad to leave The Chorus; I will bring a piece of it with me wherever I go.” Jacksonville Children’s Chorus 3 2015-16 PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS April 15 & 17, 2016 - Rutter’s Mass of the Children With the Amelia Island Chamber Singers.
