Parish of St. Timothy
September 29, 2013 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time The Roman Catholic Parish of St. Timothy Archdiocese of St. Boniface “A man was feasting everyday…” Luke 16:19 Amos 6:1, 4-7 - Rich and Poor The gap between rich and poor is uncomfortably large. If you can read, you already have advantages over many other people in the world. If you worship in a church building and have printed copies of bulletins and worship aids, you have resources far beyond those of many others. Most people are unaware of their privileges. They do not live in the squalor of poverty. They forget it is there, except in photographs and letters of appeal. They see the gap between themselves and those who are richer, but they ignore the gap between themselves and the poor. 135 John Forsyth Road Winnipeg Manitoba R2N 1R3 Pastor: Fr. Phil Daley Phone: 204-949-3760 email: [email protected] Weekend Celebrations of the Eucharist: Saturday at 5:00 pm, Sunday at 9:00 am and 11:00 am Weekday Celebrations of the Eucharist: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 9:15 am The prophet Amos had no patience with the rich. They lived a comfortable life: They lay on beds of ivory. They ate meat. They played music. They drank wine by the bowlful. They anointed themselves with the best oils and perfumes. They had it all and used it all. They showed little concern for the poor. Office Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm (closed 12 noon - 1:00 pm) Amos could envision another society, a society in which the rich shared. Those with more resources have more responsibility to help those who have less. Read the bulletin on our website: www.st-timothy.ca The rich who thought they had it all lost it all in the exile. When Jerusalem was taken into captivity, invaders took interest in the booty of the rich. The poor had nothing. They had nothing to lose. But the rich lost it all. Our possessions hold us captive to our desires, to our fears, and to ourselves. Freedom is in giving, not in possessing. Written by Paul Turner. Once they have been created, your group leader will receive a list of group members and will contact you with information about your first faith sharing session! What about my books? Where do I get those? Books will be sold for $5. Your group leader will let you know as soon as the books are available for purchase. Please make every effort to get them before the season starts so you can prepare! (Stayed tuned for when and where to get your book.) Oh no! I forgot to sign up last week! That’s ok – you have one more chance! This weekend there is a sign-up sheet on the ARISE table in the narthex for you to add your information. Otherwise your final deadline to register with the office is this Tuesday by NOON, October 1st as we need to place our order for the participant work books. Season 3 starts the week of Oct 21st! Please pray for the success of the ARISE program at St. Tim’s. If you have any further questions please contact the parish office for assistance at 204-949-3760. The weeklong 25th Anniversary Celebrations were a huge success! There was something for everyone! A fun time was had at the BBQ hotdog supper after the 5 pm mass on Saturday, September 8th. About 200 parishioners attended the Knights of Columbus hosted event. Special thanks going to Peter and Jennifer Porco, their team who grilled at the giant BBQ, and all their hotdog helpers! Thanks also to the families, especially the youth, who worked the fish pond and artistically painted the faces of the young and young-at-heart! Everyone enjoyed eating among the beautiful gardens (Thank you Garden Ministry Team!) and being entertained by Floyd the Clown. Thanks also to everyone who came out to break bread (or more appropriately “split hotdog buns!”) with their fellow parishioners, and for their donations to SSVP. A total of $398.40 was raised for SSVP to help the hungry in our city. * * * * * * * On the parish’s 25th Anniversary, September 11th, His Grace, Archbishop Albert LeGatt presided at a special Anniversary mass. Thank you to all the liturgical ministers who served at mass, and to the 9 am choir who sounded particularly heavenly that evening! After mass, we visited and shared St. Timothy memories over cake, juice and coffee. With much anticipation we opened the Millennium Time Capsule that was filled with parishioners prayers and hopes for the future of our parish. We have displayed the contents of the time capsule in the binders found on the rolling bulletin board. Don’t forget to look at the “early days” parishioner photos that have been matched to their current photo. Not too many people guessed the toddler photo of Fr. Phil correctly! See if you did! Tuesday, Oct. 1 K of C meeting in the library - 8 pm Mon., Oct. 7 & 21 SSVP - 7:30 pm & Blood Donor Clinic 3:00 - 8:00 pm Tuesday, Oct. 8 Women’s Auxiliary meeting in the library 7:00 pm During the Anniversary celebrations, we learned that there is another Time Capsule that is sealed in the wall behind the St. Timothy & St. Paul effigy. We found, by going through our most accurate and thorough archives (ie, early church bulletins!), that indeed there exists a time capsule which is expected to be opened on the 25th anniversary of the blessing of the church construction site - April 17, 2019. To all parishioners, mark this date on your electronic devices! Tues/Wed/Thurs Oct. 15/16/17 Catechism classes begin! * * * * * * * The Tribute for Seniors held on Sunday was a resounding success. Over 200 seniors and volunteers attended the luncheon to commemorate our 25th Anniversary and many of them have belonged to the Parish since it began. We also enjoyed the company of several special guests including Paul & Michelle Campeau, Fr. Phil Daley, Fr. Gerry Ward, Fr. Isaïe Blanchette & Fr. Leo Couture. This event could not have taken place without the hard work of several Women’s Auxiliary members, a number of Parishioners, Father Phil and the Parish Staff but I would like to mention a few people who made special contributions. Paul Farrell spent many hours researching the history of the church and Margaret Sulymka spend countless hours picking apples, making tart pastry and filling, and preparing the food. Carolynne Yuen, Nick Guidry, Roxanne Liivamagi, and Jocelyne Liivamagi made the entertainment happen with the help of many actors, singers and musicians. Several others, including Marilyn Hido, Paulette Spencer, Irene Paradis. Linda Teriaco, and Vicki Todd were in charge of decorating the hall, preparing displays, ushering guests and serving food. Space requirements prevent us from mentioning everyone by name but a big thank you to all. Happy Anniversary to all! Bea Vincent - Chairperson, Women’s Auxiliary * * * * * * * And a BIG thank you to Bea Vincent, chairperson of the “Tribute to Seniors” planning committee, for her hard work and enthusiasm! The proceeds of $900.00 from the event’s ticket sales went to support the good works of SSVP! We are so blessed to celebrate our parish - our past, present and future. May God continue to bless us with His richness and strength, and empower us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May we give thanks and praise to God, preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and build up the Body of Christ, today and always! We’ve posted some photos of all the anniversary events on the bulletin board by the parish hall. Be sure to take a look! Thank you to all our photographers for capturing the images and sharing the special memories of our 25th Anniversary Celebrations! These fun exercise classes are free, but we encourage you to bring a non-perishable food donation for SSVP. Questions? Please phone Ed Pelletier at 204-256-7738. A Little Church Humour En route to church to make his first confession, my nervous seven-year-old grandson asked me what he could expect. "Confession is where you tell all the bad things you’ve done to the priest," I told him. He looked relieved. "Good. I haven’t done anything bad to the priest." When I asked my friend if she was planning to attend church, she just shook her head. "I haven’t gone in a long time," she said. Besides, it’s too late for me. I’ve probably already broken all seven commandments." Father O'Malley answers the phone. "Hello, is this Father O'Malley?" "It is." "This is Revenue Canada Taxation. Can you help us?" "I can." "Do you know a Ted Hooligan?" "I do." "Is he a member of your parish? "He is." "Did he donate $10,000 to the church?" "He will."
