Manager’s Notes
Many of us at Hidden Hills get weekly
(lately it seems like it has been daily)
electronic transmissions from one of our
esteemed members and resident experts in
Pluviometry, Barney Poston. Uh, what’s
that you say? Well, it’s the study of
rainfall, and Barney has been recording our
local daily rainfall totals for the past two
years. Everyone knows that the Jacksonville
International airport (where the official
Jacksonville precipitation is recorded) is a
ways up the road, and further, anyone who
has lived here for a while knows that this
area of town is quite unique when it comes
to weather events. Therefore, it has been
quite enlightening to see exactly where we
stand here at Hidden Hills and I am pleased
to report that as of the end of last month
we were thirty inches , yes 3-0, ahead
of our normal pace through September.
Amazingly, we recorded 9.7 inches of rain
in one day (June 25)! It is also interesting
to note that in 2012, the airport has seen
22 inches LESS rainfall than what we have
recorded here at Hidden Hills! (46 inches
versus 68 inches).
Aside from our interrupted tennis
matches, rain-shortened beach days, soggy
rounds of golf, and a few extra weeds in our
back yards, it has been a refreshing trend
after years of drought conditions. Thanks
to all of you for your continued support of
the club through all of the interruptions
that Mother Nature has thrust upon us
and thank you, Barney, for sharing you
interesting and important data.
We have some great events at HHCC this
month and I hope you can make time for
yourself and your family to come out and
enjoy YOUR club. We’ll try to get Barney
to throw in a little sunshine!

As the weather begins
to cool, we will begin
preparing the course for
the winter season. This
is generally a good time
to apply a “winterize”
type of fertilizer, which
basically has a higher rate
of potassium and a slow
release source of nitrogen.
The potassium will
improve cold tolerance,
and aid in recovery from
cart traffic. We will be
applying this type of
fertilizer to the entire golf
course.
Last year, we made a
decision to skip the overseeding on our greens, and
the Bermuda grass this year
was the best it has been for
some time. I feel that this
is our best plan for year
round performance, and
we are planning to do the
same thing this year. We
gained several months of
good putting conditions
at the end of the season,
and again in the spring,
without the disruption
of seed germination or
transition. Our tees will
be over-seeded as usual,
in order for the divots to
regenerate themselves.
Please remember as the
temperatures change, the
turf takes longer to recover.
Cart traffic, divot repair,
and ball marks all become
a factor in turf quality.
Please remember to repair
ball marks, stay on cart
paths where provided, and
avoid areas designated with
yellow stakes. Thank you
for helping to keep our
course in shape! See you on
the course!

Lamm on Golf
It has been said that you can find out almost
everything about a person’s character by playing a
round of golf with him or her. Indeed, golf can reveal
everything from integrity to politeness to sympathy
to competitiveness and beyond.
Golf often reveals hidden demons as well. The
kindest, sweetest and gentlest among us too often
find ourselves enraged on the course. We become
club-throwing, club-slamming, club-breaking
creatures with potty mouths.
I plead guilty to all charges. I know many others
as well as but I will reveal no names to protect the
guilty.
Why does golf make so many of us act so badly?
I’m certain the science of psychology has the
answers, but I have a few of my own even though
I’ve had no training in such matters other than
having lived 67 years and having played thousands
of rounds of golf. Therefore, my answers come only
from personal experience (although I bet many of
you can relate).
The most frustrating thing about golf is that it
appears to be so simple. The ball lays motionless in
front of you. You stand still in front of it with a club
in your hand. Hit the ball!
There’s no one screaming at you. There’s no one
threatening to hit you. You do not have to perform
while running or skating. There’s no ticking clock.
Strength, quickness, speed and courage aren’t really
factors.
Why is the game so difficult? Maybe it’s because
our expectations are so high. I know it would be pure
luck if I hit a pitch thrown by Roger Clemens in his
prime. I know I would have little or no chance to
score against Michael Jordan in his prime. I know
I could never outswim Michael Phelps or throw a
football as well as Peyton Manning.
But I have hit shots as pure as Tiger Woods. I have
sunk putts as long as Phil Mickelson. I have birdied
the same holes as Tom Watson.
Perhaps it is because we all think we’re better at
golf than we really are. The sport teases us by making
us think we can play it at the highest level.
None of this excuses us for our bad behavior.
Perhaps writing about this will help us face the truth
and act more like ladies and gentlemen when we do
play.
It is too beautiful of a game to let our anger spoil it
for us and those in our foursome.

Great weather has blessed our Fall tennis season so far. The first days of lower temperatures in the mid 80’s gave us great
excitement that perfect tennis weather was on the way. All of our men and ladies began their new league season in September and we
will become super busy as people enjoy relief from the difficult hot playing conditions. We have also enjoyed the presence of many
people who do not play regularly.

Monument Road
Beautification Update
Monument Road Beautification thanks
all who have contributed to the financial
support effort. We are making progress
although contributions from previous years
are somewhat off. The city’s budget cutting
decisions for 2013 will dramatically impact
our efforts to maintain our Monument
Road Beautification efforts. The city budget
process has cut substantially Right-of –Way
& Ground Maintenance Division funding.
( This is the department that mows the
medians and roadways of the city.) With its budget being cut by $2.5
million Public Works has revised its yearly mowing schedules downward
dramatically. Monument Road will be cut ONLY 9 times in all of 2013,
down from 19 cuttings the median gets presently. We are working with
our city council members (Clay Yarborough and John Crescimbeni) with
the hope that some funding will be returned, however, but this rather
doubtful. Both of these gentlemen are supportive of the effort. Monument
Road Beautification will continue to work to support and MAINTAIN
OUR PROPERTY VALUES. We would ask that all members consider
a possible financial contribution. Every bit helps and is needed!! Checks
should be made to MONUMENT ROAD BEAUTIFICATION and sent
to David Boynton, 4221 Stratford Way. Jacksonville, Florida 32225 or to
Bernard McCarthy, 4011 Turnberry Ct. Jacksonville, Florida 32225.
