The second class in the SJMSPA “Life 101” series was held on Saturday, December 8 with 27 cadets in aXendance. “Mrs. Major,” Janis Stelljes, provided the class with snacks that were much appreciated -‐-‐ not a crumb remained! The class, en>tled “Consequences,” was a sobering lesson on the ramifica>ons of teens breaking the law. Sergeant Chris McFadden from the Salina Police Department set the stage for candid discussions with the boys by defining age of consent and reviewing important legal defini>ons including discussions about DUI (driving under the influence), MIP (minor in possession) and MIC (minor in consump>on). Other subjects explored were self-‐defense, drug offenses, felonies, and sex crimes such as sex>ng. Sergeant McFadden answered some very challenging ques>ons. Perhaps the greatest impact came when he showed pictures of local youth that had personally suffered the consequences of their or others’ behavior either through loss of life or incarcera>on from gun violence, gang ac>vity, and drug use. Ader the class, cadet Paul Meyer, a junior, said he learned the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony and thought the class was very effec>ve. Cadet Dakota KinneR, a sophomore, had ques>ons about self-‐defense in different situa>ons and what was lawful. The class was a huge success, and the boys led with a clear sense of the consequences of their ac>ons.
The next class, “Life aTer SJMS,” will be on Saturday, April 13. Please see page 6 for more informa>on

Cadets Learn About Jobs at Career Day
The SJMSPA sponsored Career Day for the 9th through 12th grade cadets on Friday, February 1. Adults who work in a variety of professions discussed their jobs with the cadets. Those occupa>ons were financial advisor, aXorney, architectural engineer, chiropractor, manufacturing engineer, physical therapist, physician, recrui>ng firm, U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, and veterinarian. The adults also discussed what educa>on and experience it takes to obtain a job in their field. Kansas State-‐Salina’s associate dean of students discussed what it takes to get a degree in the careers presented. Several cadets said Career Day was a good experience. It helped them think about what they want to do for a career as well as how to prepare for it.
New this year was Paul Silvio, dad of cadet William Gamble and Annual SJMSPA member, traveling from MassachuseXs with his colleague, Brandon Buscher from New York. Paul and Brandon represented Modis, Inc., an informa>on technology staffing firm. They spoke to the cadets about expecta>ons of prospec>ve employers and how the choices the cadets make now influence their future, par>cularly in the social media realm.
Other organiza>ons represented: Kansas State, Salina
Vortex Valves, Salina
Salina Physical Therapy
Smoky Valley Chiroprac>c
ComCare, Salina
Mize & Linville, Chartered (AXorney)

U.S. Navy
Thanks, Celia Booth-‐McCaffery, mom of cadet James McCaffery and Life>me SJMSPA member, for coordina>ng this event and traveling from Virginia to ensure a successful day for all. SJMS End-‐of-‐Year Finals Policy
Reminder regarding cadets and their end of year finals:
”Seniors may be exempt from finals if they score a minimum of a 21 composite score on the ACT. Cadets in grades 6 through 11 may be exempt from all finals if they score proficient or beXer on ALL of their Kansas Assessments. Should they score below proficient on one or more assessment, cadets will only be exempt from the final(s) on which they score proficient or beXer.”
If you have any ques>ons regarding this policy, please contact Ginger Wooten at [email protected].

Annual Formal Inspec]on
Annual Formal Inspec>on (AFI) will take place on Monday, April 22 on the SJMS campus. Our boys look forward to this event and prepare for it for months. AFI is the “gold medal” of events for the school and the boys. Here is what will take place:
According to Chief Anthony Edwards, Senior Army Instructor (SAI) and overall in charge of Junior Reserve Officer Train-‐ ing Corps (JROTC) and AFI, the purpose of the inspec>on is to annually evaluate the JROTC to determine if the school’s cadet corps and instructors meet and maintain JROTC program standards, and iden>fy and appropriately reward those that exceed program standards. According to Major George Stelljes, SJMS uses this ceremony as a way to recognize important events and to teach self-‐discipline and aXen>on to detail.
The overall inspector comes from the Brigade Headquarters at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. The supply inspector
will come from the ROTC Department at K-‐State in ManhaXan, Kansas. The scribes (civilians with military knowledge) usually come from the local military recruiter offices in Salina. Specific elements are scored. The elements include military curriculum knowledge, uniform appearance, life and history at SJMS, drill and ceremonies, baXalion staff briefing, and baXalion staff ranks (S-‐1, S-‐2, S-‐3, S-‐4 and S-‐5). The day’s schedule:
•
Pass-‐in-‐Review at the Tear Drop
A review consists of four stages: 1. forma>on of troops
2. presenta>on and honors
3. inspec>on
4. march in review •
Inspec]on of Open Ranks with Platoon Leaders The Platoon stands in an expanded forma>on so the inspectors can move between the squads to inspect each cadet’s uniform and ask ques>ons about the chain of command and the individual cadet’s uniform. Gigs (mistakes) are pointed out with the opportunity for correc>on. •
Further Ques]oning
Ten cadets are chosen from each company
by the baXalion staff, freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors, for further ques>oning by the scribe and inspectors regarding JROTC. •
Graded Pass-‐in-‐Review
Takes place on the Browning Parade field in front of Jack Vanier Hall. MAJ George Stelljes

BaRalion Staff Briefing
Each officer describes his responsibili>es, and his military notebooks are reviewed for accuracy. The total score, out of 1,000 possible points, is then calculated and announced. The final score determines the school’s level of success: Pass, Merit Unit (MU), Honor Unit (HU), or Honor Unit with Dis>nc>on (HUD). To earn the Honor Unit with Dis>nc>on ra>ng the school must score at least 96 percent in all categories evaluated. According to Major Stelljes, SJMS does not concern themselves with anything lower than HUD. That is SJMS’ tradi>on of excellence. They have scored 999 four consecu>ve years with Corps 113, 114, 115, and 116. Last year’s Corps of Cadets earned a 999 out of a possible 1,000 and was again awarded "Honor Unit with Dis>nc>on" .
These impressive scores have afforded SJMS to be one of the top JROTC programs in the United States and par>cipa>ng provinces, out of approximately 1,500 high schools. Our high scores are also important because many of the service academies reserve a number of nomina>ons and scholarships for graduates of HUD schools.
Some of SJMS’ appointments are:

Successful “Life 101” Class
“Life aTer SJMS,” the final class for this school year in our “Life 101” series, was held on Saturday morning, April 13. This class examined the link between educa>on and income poten>al, and taught the cadets budge>ng skills and how to make good life decisions ader leaving SJMS. In this interac>ve, task-‐oriented session, the boys learned the importance of maintaining good credit, the impact of taxes on their paycheck, and many other topics. It was entertaining to see the cadets’ astonishment as they are introduced to the reality of paying taxes!
