A
severe storm moving across North Carolina
on Friday did not hamper the 2014 Eta State
Convention. See page 15-16 for a complete report of
the meetings, workshops, music, and fellowship that 342
members enjoyed April 25-27 in Greenville, NC.
Eta State Awards Six Scholarships

T
he Eta State Scholarship Committee is pleased to
announce the winners of six scholarships awarded
in 2014 to outstanding Delta Kappa Gamma women
educators.
Kimberly Warr received the
Hunter-Moore scholarship for
doctoral study valued at $4,000.
Kim is from Charlotte and is a
member of Alpha Zeta Chapter.
She is seeking the doctorate in
Educational Leadership at
Wingate University.
Wendy Miller was awarded
the Emmons-Flintom doctoral
scholarship valued at $4,000. Wendy
is from New Bern and is a member of
Alpha Psi Chapter. She is pursuing a
doctorate in Educational Leadership
at East Carolina University.

he ad hoc committee has taken
a slow, thoughtful journey that
promises compelling opportunities
for Eta State. We have ventured
an uncharted course. The work
has been daring. We have studied
and perfected the documents
and prepared to seek a commitment from our
membership. The Eta State Executive Board gave a
unanimous endorsement, and the motion to ‘approve
the establishment of an Eta State 501 (c) (3)
Educational Foundation’ was presented and passed
by the membership at the 2014 Eta State Convention
in Greenville, on April 26. An initial Board of
Directors was appointed by President Patricia Taylor,
to be convened after July 1. Getting the Foundation
‘up and running’ will include electing officers;
appointing a treasurer; filing for an EIN number;
filing the documents with the IRS and other required
forms, if granted tax-exempt status as a 501 (C) (3)
organization.

I
have been told that as one
begins to age, time goes by
faster. It is very difficult to believe
that a year of the 2013-2015
biennium in Eta State is gone!
Reflecting on this past year, I have
seen evidence of commitment,
collaboration, and celebration in
Eta State. As a result of working together, Eta State continues to grow
stronger in fellowship and service because of our dedication and love
for the Society! At the same time, there is always room for growth in
any organization. This, too, is what makes us stronger!
One thing that I have learned this past year is that leaders do not
know everything! Great leaders come into leadership roles using every
opportunity as a time to learn (this sounds like something “Leroy the
Leadership Guy” would say). The challenges that leaders sometimes
experience are the pathways to new adventures! I have even learned
that some great leaders do not know all the words to the Delta Kappa
Gamma song! Imagine that! I have had many new adventures this year;
I can say, without a doubt that I am a stronger leader because of them.
We have helped each other along the way, and we have accepted and
celebrated each other’s failures and successes. This is what has helped
to mold confident leaders in our Society. This is what has strengthened
our “sisterhood.”
The Eta State officers are grateful for the state, chapter, and
regional leaders who have served us well in 2012-2014. They have
certainly been excellent role models for the future leaders in Eta State!
We welcome the new chapter leaders as they emerge confidently and
ready to lead in 2014-2016. As we embark upon a second year of this
2013-2015 biennium, it is my hope that we will continue to focus on
celebrating each other as well as spreading the excitement of leadership
and of this great Society! Have your “elevator speech” ready in case
someone asks about that “sorority” to which you belong. This gives
us an opportunity to share the good news of this Society (not sorority)
that encompasses 18 member countries and to invite others to come
and share the fun and adventure of service and leadership with women
educators from all over the world! Together, we will continue to grow
and become stronger in education and Eta State!

Dr. Teresa Cowan was also selected
to receive an Eta State Advanced
Studies/Projects Award of $500 to
complete a special project. She is
also a past recipient of a doctoral
scholarship in 2008. Teresa is from
Asheville and is a member of Alpha
Phi Chapter.

Melanie Sherrill, who is seeking a
Master’s Degree in Library Science
at Appalachian State University, was
the recipient of the Eta State Master’s
Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
Melanie is from Lincolnton and is a
member of Beta Epsilon Chapter.
Maria Styers also received the
Eta State Master’s Scholarship in
the amount of $1,000. Maria is
from Franklinton and is a member
of Gamma Tau Chapter. Maria is
working toward a Master’s Degree
from East Carolina University in
Family and Consumer Sciences Education.
Luanne Rose was awarded an Eta
State Advanced Studies/Projects
Award of $500 to complete a special
project. Luanne is from Newton
Grove and is a member of Delta Mu
Chapter.
Since 1955, when Eta State began awarding scholarships
to deserving women for educational pursuits, 131
scholarships have been awarded totaling $389,000. The
awarding of scholarships fulfills Purpose Five: To endow
scholarships to aid outstanding women educators in
pursuing graduate study.
The deadline to apply for a 2015 Eta State Scholarship
is February 1 for women who have been a Delta Kappa
Gamma member for a minimum of two calendar years.
In late summer, watch the state website for the first
edition of a special report by the Eta State Scholarship
Committee on the research of immediate past scholarship
winners as well as highlights of continuing legacies of
Eta State winners over the years.

It is a new beginning
and a glorious moment as we
anticipate the ability to enhance
our financial strength. We will
be able to accept grants as well
as personal donations and gifts
to support educational projects
at both the state and chapter
levels. The next step is for the
Executive Board at the 2015 Eta
State Convention to ratify the
establishment of the Foundation
by amending the Eta State Bylaws
to include the Enabling Act for
the Foundation. All members of
Eta State will become members of
the Foundation. All authority is
vested in the Foundation Board of
Directors.
We are making history and
hope each member will honor this
accomplishment. Keep abreast
of the progress being made, and
genuine thanks to all who have
expressed support in reaching this
landmark goal of establishing an
educational foundation for Eta
State.

Chapter Achievement Awards
T
he Award Committee developed a new Chapter
Achievement Award three years ago. The first year
Alpha Lambda was the only chapter to earn the highest Presidential Award for superior performance in their
chapter activities. The second year two chapters, Alpha
Lambda and Gamma Chi, won the Presidential Award .
At the 2014 Eta State Convention, the Awards Committee
proudly announced eight chapters earned the Presidential
Award.

A Very Important Announcement!
A Critical Medicare Issue
(This problem was recently covered in an NBC Evening
News segment.)
Question: What is the difference between simply being
“admitted” to a hospital and “admitted for observation”?
Answer: Possibly thousands of dollars!
“Admitted for observation” is not covered by Medicare
Part A because this is not considered a traditional hospital
admission. If, as a result of this classification, a patient
requires rehabilitation, not only is the hospital stay not
reimbursable, but any rehabilitation costs are not covered
by Medicare either. Also, medication prescribed while
in the hospital when “admitted for observation” is not
covered by Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage). Finally, if the patient “admitted for observation” is
subsequently admitted to a nursing home, the cost of the
nursing home care may not be covered or reimbursed;
because the person was not considered to have been admitted to the hospital.
If you or a loved one is admitted to a hospital, the status “admitted” or “admitted for observation”
is determined by the admitting doctor when the patient
enters the hospital. Failure to get this clarified IMMEDIATELY during the admission process can be extremely
expensive. Even if the status is changed from “admitted
for observation” to “admitted” after the patient enters the
hospital, there can be dire financial problems.

s the International DKG organization celebrates 50 years with its foundation, it is exciting to know that Eta State will form its first foundation.
