The splendid Ö TZTAL N ATURE PARK comprises a number of almost untouched, protected mountain
areas in the Ötztal Alps and Stubai Alps which are characterized by fascinating high Alpine
landscapes and huge glacier regions. Obergurgl‘s protected Stone Pine Forest and the unspoilt
forest areas in Sölden‘s Windachtal feature century-old stone pone populations. Gurgler Kamm
ridge is a UNESCO Biosphere Park focusing on scientific research on the inter-action and development of both man and nature. The precipitous Engelswand rock face near Umhausen, an
official Tirolean and European Natura 2000 Preserve, offers an insight into the varied fl ora and
fauna in an almost vertical habitat. Another protected area can be found at the entrance to
the Ötztal: the huge Achstürze-Piburger See region boasts an idyllic mountain lake amidst a
huge rockslide area.

Miracle Fiber
From Flax to Linen
Night Full of Life
Sweet Temptation
In the course of this wonderful guided tour
visitors get an insight into the whole manufacturing cycle, from the raw material delivered
by local sheep farmers to fine woolen products.
Additionally, the tour focuses also on the
longstanding history of flax and sheep wool
processing in the Ötztal. Questions welcome!
Natural linen and sheep wool has always been of major significance in the valley‘s history. The central
Ötztal became more and more important thanks to its
excellent flax quality. Get to know everything about
flax cultivation, processing and fine linen products
– from sheep shearing to hand-woven wool fabrics.
Admire the fine art of weaving on original looms.
At night everything is quiet in the village, it‘s sleeping time. Not at all – our streets and gardens are
full of life. With a bit of luck we watch bats, owls,
mice, insects, spiders, harvestmen, night butterflies, martens, cats, toads, salamanders, weasels,
foxes … and more! Do plants, bushes and flowers
sleep, too? Why do they look different in the dark.
From blossoms to honey ... here you will get to
know everything on the valley‘s sweetest temptation. After a short introduction our bee expert
takes you to the beehives where you admire the
bustling bee colonies at work. At the end of the
tour you sample delicious, natural mountain honey from the Ötztal.

Clacier Murder
Creeping and Crawling ...
The 7th edition of the Family Fest organized by
the ÖTZTAL NATURE PARK, focuses on „quality“
topics.
Location
Already 23 years ago Ötzi the Iceman was discovered by chance at Tisenjoch saddle in the
Ötztal Alps - but research still continues. Who
was this mysterious old man who was killed forcibly in the high Alpine areas above Ötztal some
5300 years ago? Which facts can scientists
still reveal? Surprises are the order of the day.
Our colorful hay meadows have an extremely rich animal and plant life. Already for many centuries the local
farmers feed their animals with fresh green fodder from
lush mountain meadows. Dried grass is also stored for
the winter months Come and join us on a truly outstanding acoustic and optical journey to the fascinating wildlife world in the valley‘s Alpine meadows.

will take park in the festival by providing many
different activity stations for young and old: try

past, we sample honey and take a glimpse of
Ötztal‘s rich variety of fauna and flora.
The Ötztal Balloon will take off in good weather. All active participants once again receive
the coveted Nature Park Shirt. Great live music
and entertainment by „Bluatschink“ at the end

From Grain to Bread
Night of the Bats
Rich Bird Life
Glaciers through the Ages
The historical, 300-year old Pirchhütt grain mill
is in operation only once a year. Together with
the old Mathies‘n bee house dating back to 1911,
this historical ensemble has been preserved in the
village center of Obergurgl. On this special day
both the grain mill and the baking oven will be
activated for traditional grain milling.
There are many scare stories revolving around
bats: is it true that they get stuck in your hair?
Slowly these childhood stories have become a
thing of the past. Today we rather appreciate them
as nocturnal animals on warm summer nights. It‘s
always worth to know more about their vivid way
of night-time life.
The scenic ÖTZTAL NATURE PARK is home to an incredible number of middle European bird species.
Join us on a wonderful tour of several habitats
at different elevation, ranging from cultivated
landscapes at the entrance to the Ötztal and deep
green forest areas to the highest peaks of the incredible Nature Park.
Since the Middle Ages Ötztal‘s mighty glaciers
have changed in size several times, like most
of the Alpine glacier fields. The changing size
of glaciers strongly influences the hydrologic circle in Alpine regions, proven by exact
measurements and model calculations presented to the audience.

Marvelous Hut-to-Hut Tour
Farst at 1,482 meters above sea level reminds of
a little kingdom, towering high above the mystic
Engelswand rock face. Nature fans should not miss
out on a visit to the Reichalm area located some 500
meters above Farst. Encircled by the stunning Alpine
scenery you enjoy silence plus dreamlike vistas.
Steep Alpine meadows interspersed with decayed mountain shelters give an insight into the hard working conditions of farmers in the Ötztal. The high-altitude Hemrach
pasturelands invite us to take a well-deserved rest. Enjoy uninterrupted panoramic views of the glacier-topped
Geigenkamm ridge and its numerous 3000m high peaks.
Ötztal‘s Geigenkamm ridge boasts an infinite number
of gorgeous high Alpine lakes. The dark Wettersee
next to Erlanger Hütte nestles high above Leierstal
valley – reminding of an Ice Age relict. The mountain hut is a highly awarded place as it received the

Sölden‘s Silent Part
Lake Peerlersee
Mooser Steg Water Strider
Steep mountain pastures and rustic Alpine huts
are deeply rooted in the valley‘s century-old
mountain farming history. One of the undisputed highlights of this hiking tour is marvelous Wannenkarsee mountain lake with its
unique crystal-blue to emerald green reflections.
This high-elevation hike travels above Sölden,
along incredibly green pasturelands and high Alpine cirques to unrivaled Lake Peerlersee. In immediate vicinity to the lake you can admire chamois, ibexes and whistling marmots. A real high
Alpine gem to fall in love with.
Mooser Steg is a truly outstanding „Waalweg“ water
theme trail traveling along the former irrigation ditches. The newly hiking trail takes you to a number
of surprising activity stations, offering superb vistas
of the deep ravine formed by the Windacher Ache
mountain brook. A great place to breathe deeply.

Men and Sheep
[i Ö] – My Action for Nature
Wonderful hiking tour with plenty of botanical
and historical highlights. From Vent a rising trail
leads to the ancient Stone Pine Forest and further
on to Mutsbühel area. In vicinity to Ötzi‘s finding
place you will find interesting traces of early Alpine settlements in the Ötztal valley.
The wide open cirques in the foothills of her „Majesty“ – Wildspitze peak at 3774m – are the remains of the glacier‘s past. Giant moraines and rock
walls, idyllic glacier lakes and brooks, fascinating
rock masses formed by the eternal ice will accompany you on this hiking tour back to Alpine history.
Vent, Tirol‘s undisputed mountaineering village,
nestles at 1900m above sea level. Among the
area‘s highlights rank Wildspitze summit, the
world-famous „glacier priest“ Franz Senn who
strongly influenced Vent‘s history and the yearly
held sheep drive of 4000 animals to South Tyrol.
The Team [i Ö] („me too“) is a local platform for
volunteers lending assistance for the ÖTZTAL NATURE
PARK. In summer varied theme programs are scheduled throughout the valley: pastureland grooming,
garbage collection, research, biotopes or reforestation of protective forests – guided by an expert team.
