OUR
MISSION
There is a profound difference between living and life.
WELCOME TO THE 2012
BLACK
BALL
Living may extend time for another day.
But life is far more than sleeping and waking.
Life is more than merely existing.
And, although it would be easier, life cannot be bought in a pill.
That is why Keep a Child Alive gives more than just the pills
needed to fight HIV in Africa and India.
It provides the essential nutrition, shelter, support, and
education to help ensure those pills are taken properly and
effectively.
It gives the things we all take for granted, but that make all the
difference. A bed. A roof. A ride. A book. A smile.
Keep a Child Alive offers children, their families, and entire
communities a shoulder to lean on and a heart that beats for them.
Because Keep a Child Alive believes we can do something far bigger
and better than give the ability to live.
We can give the dignity that is life.
Keep a Child Alive.

A LETTER
FROM OUR ceo
Tonight we are honoring two extraordinary women who embody the
passion and spirit of Keep a Child Alive, and whose work exemplifies
tonight’s theme: the power of women and the promise of an AIDS-free Africa.
Oprah
Winfrey
and
Angélique
Kidjo
are
visionary
and
powerful
humanitarians. They have led the way in building the next generation
of women leaders in Africa by supporting programs that educate
hundreds of girls and empower families and communities to work
towards a healthy future.
Education and empowerment are essential to the eradication of HIV,
which with continued focus and resources, is within our grasp in
Africa, home to 23.5 million people living with HIV. Access to HIV
treatment has expanded dramatically in the past decade, and there is
clear evidence that antiretroviral therapy not only improves health,
but prevents transmission. A path to success is in view.
But we have a long way to go. Almost half of those who need HIV
treatment in Africa have no access and it is tragically worse for
children; 70% of children in need are not receiving it. We also know
that success will allude us without the strong involvement of women,
the life force of families and communities.
In honoring Oprah Winfrey and Angélique Kidjo tonight, we also
recognize girls and women throughout Africa working to build healthier
communities, and stand in solidarity with them. We also recommit to
our mission to extend life-saving HIV treatment and support services
to women and their families, and to provide these services with
respect, love, and compassion. Your generous support tonight will
make this possible.
Our heartfelt appreciation to Alicia Keys, Keep a Child Alive Co-founder
and

A LETTER
FROM ALICIA
Tonight is an extremely special night! I am
every day a dignity and desire for a better life,
celebrate the extraordinary force of two women
We witness the remarkable occur when women have
thrilled to join Peter, and all of you here, to
whose refusal to accept anything less than the
opportunity to be their best is changing the lives
of a generation of young women and girls in Africa:
this evening’s Black Ball honorees, Angélique Kidjo
and Oprah Winfrey!
We’ve come a long way since last November, when
Secretary of State Clinton, one of the strongest
voices for women and girls in the public arena,
first called upon our world leaders to make the
possibility of an AIDS-free generation a reality.
Her declaration that it was possible galvanized
our movement, and brought the issue to the forefront
of the global health agenda.
Sadly, we know women are the face of HIV in
sub-Saharan Africa. Not only are more women than
men living with HIV, but young women are as much
as eight times more likely than men to be HIV positive.
And that’s just unacceptable! Without changing
things for women and girls, we’ll blow the opportunity
to change the course of the epidemic that’s finally
within our grasp.
Tonight is about celebrating the glory of womanhood
and illuminating how we, as women, are the warriors
and the opportunity to become their best selves.
access to the HIV treatment they need to stay healthy
and well. It changes everything for them. A woman
on treatment is an undeniable force for change all
around her. She may not convince her man to get
to the clinic for treatment right away, but all
her children will be there – and her female family
members, friends, and neighbors will all follow.
They’ll overcome all odds to stay alive, keep their
children alive and their babies from being born
with HIV – and they’ll fight through anything to
build a brighter future for their kids.
I know at Keep a Child Alive, we continue to call
upon the best of ourselves everywhere we work to
provide comprehensive HIV treatment to all those
who need it for survival. We’re more than just
life-saving medicine. We address the specific
needs of the women and girls in our care, and support
orphan care programs that keep the most vulnerable
children out of harms way.
Everyone needs someone to believe in them, and
Keep a Child Alive believes -- I believe -- that
women will become the face of the END of HIV.
We are at the precipice of a new world with new
of our communities! Women are the heartbeat at
possibilities and starting here tonight, in this
by women, supporting projects run by visionary
pledge your power and dedication to our fight.
Keep a Child Alive: we’re an organization founded

Thank you for being here tonight!

EMPOWERING
WOMEN
The disparities are particularly striking in
sub-Saharan Africa, where 60% of people living
with HIV are women and where young women are
eight times more likely than men to be living
with HIV.
Behind these statistics are human faces: a mother
who prays that she will have a healthy baby; a
woman whose limited power within her family prevents
her from going to the clinic; an adolescent whose
only hope to stay in school is to put herself at
risk with an older man; a woman who faces violence
if she tries to protect herself; and a child born
and orphaned on the same day.
Keep a Child Alive believes that empowering women
to protect themselves from HIV, to reduce the
chance their babies will be HIV-infected, and to

“When you educate a woman,
you set her free.”
Oprah has long believed that education is the
door to freedom, offering a chance at a brighter

provided millions of dollars to organizations
that support the education and empowerment of
women, children, and families around the world.
Visionary support from Oprah’s Angel Network in
the early days of Keep a Child Alive provided

momentum towards our mission. On behalf of the

SOUTH AFRICA
Blue Roof Wellness Centre – Durban, South Africa
The Blue Roof Wellness Centre is the first clinic
wholly owned and operated by Keep a Child Alive.
Founded with the visionary support of Alicia Keys,
and in partnership with the Stephen Lewis Foundation,
the Blue Roof Wellness Centre provides free,
comprehensive HIV care and treatment to 1,852
children and adults in Wentworth, Durban and its
surrounding areas. In addition to free antiretroviral
treatment, the Blue Roof also provides HIV testing
and counseling, nutritional support for 200 families
each month, psychosocial support, reproductive
health services, including cervical cancer screening,
and substance abuse counseling. The Blue Roof
prepares free meals every day for clients and their
children who visit the clinic, ensuring that every
person who walks through our doors can take their
medicines with a nutritious, hot meal.
Operation Bobbi Bear – Durban, South Africa
Each day, an estimated 60 children are victims
of rape in South Africa. Operation Bobbi Bear works
on behalf of children who have been sexually
abused to minimize their risk of HIV infection
at the point of rescue, ensure their health and
well-being, and bring their perpetrators to justice.
With support from Keep a Child Alive, Operation
Bobbi Bear has expanded its work to new communities
and increased dialogue concerning the rights of
children in South African courts. Bobbi Bear’s
court-approved approach, which uses a teddy bear
for children to describe their abuse, has helped
thousands of children tell their stories. Their
ongoing community outreach and trainings help raise
awareness about child abuse and protect children.

An auction inspired by our work.
SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Access to AIDS treatment can transform the lives of people with AIDS, returning them from sickness to
health. Yet, only half of the 15 million people who desperately need treatment have access to it. Your
support of TREATMENT will allow for Keep a Child Alive to continue providing life-saving treatment
to those most in need.
As a thank you for your generous support of TREATMENT, we invite you and a guest to take an amazing trip
to South Africa where you will see your contribution first-hand and experience the country's rich
beauty and diversity. Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will have a restful night at the regal Peermont
D'oreale Grande. You will then make your way to the luxurious Singita Game Reserves for an incredible
safari adventure through Kruger National Park. Next up, you will arrive in Durban for a special
visit to Keep a Child Alive's Blue Roof Wellness Centre, where you can see the power of your support
with your own eyes. You will stay at the beautiful Oyster Box, which combines impeccable service and
charm with breathtaking seaside views. The trip will conclude with a stay at the lovely Ellerman
House, where you will have the opportunity to explore the full beauty of Cape Town.

DELIGHTFUL DINING WITH MARCUS SAMUELSSON
16.6 million children have lost their lives due to HIV and AIDS. The circumstances faced by these
children in their daily struggle to survive - to find shelter, food, and safety from the dangers
around them - demand a greater response from the entire world. Your support will allow Keep a Child
Alive to continue helping community-based organizations provide ORPHAN CARE programs that keep the
most vulnerable children out of harm’s way.
As the winning bidder of the ORPHAN CARE lot, we would like to invite you and a guest to visit a
destination of your choice wherever United Airlines flies. Once you pick your final destination, you will
receive the upmost luxury as a Premier 1k (R) Member for one full year. This VIP membership will make
flying a luxurious experience as you receive VIP status in the airport and on the plane. Fly United
Airlines and you will automatically be eligible for upgrades, bonus award miles, priority checkin and boarding, access to the lounge, no wait for baggage claim, and even the 1k 1Call dedicated
support phone line. In addition, you will receive a beautiful 3-piece Gucci luggage set so you will
be travelling in style! This timeless set includes a large 4-wheel suitcase, medium 4-wheel carry-on
suitcase, and large briefcase, all in black GG imprime with black leather trim.
While you are welcome to travel anywhere that United Airlines flies, we do suggest you visit one of
our orphan care sites in India. If you choose to fly to India, we will be happy to coordinate a site
visit so that you can experience your contribution at work.

One of the most essential, yet often overlooked components of successful HIV treatment is
nutrition. Many of those in Keep a Child Alive’s care live in extreme poverty and need
nutritional support to feed themselves and their families. Proper nutrition helps HIV and other
essential medicines be absorbed by the body, which strengthens the immune system and enhances
the life-saving impact of drugs. Your support of NUTRITION will allow for Keep a Child Alive to
continue providing food, which is essential for those in our care to be restored to health and
productivity.
As a thank you for your generous support of NUTRITION, we invite you and 9 guests to enjoy a
private dining experience prepared by tonight’s celebrity chef, Marcus Samuelsson. This delicious
dinner will draw inspiration from Ethiopia where Marcus was born, as well as his upbringing in
Sweden, and his recent years in New York City. In addition to a great meal with good company, you
will receive 10 autographed copies of Marcus’ bestselling book, Yes, Chef.
