It is an opportunity for learning, interaction and networking with colleagues and experts from across the region and beyond. THE SCHOOL’S OBJECTIVES The major objective of the School is to raise the level of knowledge, competence, professionalism, integrity, trust and confidence in delivery of financial services, among the participants by: 2 (i) bringing together employees, employers and experts within the financial services to bridge the communication gap, promote co-operation, interaction and networking, exchange ideas and seek solutions to similar challenges within our respective economic and banking sectors in the region, (ii) updating their knowledge on the principles and practice of modern banking and finance, (iii) making them aware of, and appreciate the wider issues with which they have to deal with and acquiring knowledge and skills appropriate to cope with their increased responsibilities, (iv) enhancing their confidence by participating in discussion groups, (v) helping them meet the current challenges facing banking and financial services, and (vi) contributing to the development of highly skilled, professional and competent bankers in the region. 2 THEME The Theme for this year’s Banking School is “Sustaining Relevance and Creating Value in a Competitive Financial Services Environment”. The delivery of quality financial services is critical given the growing level of competition in a highly technological and globalized environment. In order to remain relevant and maintain a competitive edge, banks and other financial services providers must be creative and adopt appropriate strategies in their service delivery. Innovative marketing strategies, product and service diversification, customer care and application of appropriate IT solutions are critical. The Theme for this year’s Banking School has been deliberately chosen to inform participants on how banks and financial institutions can remain relevant by creating value in their business operations. THE SCHOOL’S PROGRAMME CONTENT Based on the above Theme, the following sub-themes have been identified as some of the key components in “Sustaining Relevance and Creating Value” by banks and financial institutions in their business operations. 1. Human Capital Development for Financial Services. The human resource is the most important factor in organizational effectiveness. Ultimately all work, processes and systems in any organization (including automated ones) will be carried out by people. For banks and financial institutions to succeed, effective utilization of the human capital is most critical. Competent, well trained and skilled staff are key to business success and survival. This requires a sound Human Resource Strategy. Therefore, to achieve their objectives, banks and financial institutions must put in place strategies and policies that ensure their human capital is well developed and optimally utilized. This paper will discuss the importance of having a sound human resource strategy for banks and financial institutions. It will highlight the modern approach to Human Capital Management that ensures organizational effectiveness. 2. Customer Service Excellence in Financial Services Given the growing level of competition and customer sophistication, the biggest challenge facing banks and other financial services providers is not only to satisfy and retain their existing customers but also to attract new ones. Today’s bank customers are well informed and selective. They are aware of their needs and very sensitive to market trends. They can quickly and easily compare services offered by different providers and make quick decisions. This 3 3 calls for focused customer care and quality service. Customer Service Excellence therefore, has become a major focus for most banks and financial services providers. This paper will highlight the current practices of customer service excellence employed by banks and financial services providers. 3. Strategic Marketing in Financial Services Due to technological advancement and the rapid pace of change in business operations, increasing competition and emerging markets, banks and financial institutions are compelled to continuously review their marketing strategies. To create a competitive edge and remain profitable, it is necessary for banks and financial services providers to understand the market in which they operate and develop winning marketing strategies. This paper will discuss the important role strategic marketing plays in financial services. 4. Product and Service Innovation in Financial Services Banks and financial institutions must be creative in their product development and service delivery in order to satisfy the needs of today’s informed and sophisticated customers. Product and Service Innovation therefore, is increasingly becoming a major factor in the sustainability of banking business. To compete successfully, banks and other financial services providers must continuously develop new products and services. This paper will discuss current techniques employed in sound product and service innovation championed by successful banks and financial institutions. 5. Staying Ahead of the Competition Banks and Financial Institutions are operating in a highly competitive and challenging environment. Unlike a few decades ago when banks and financial institutions had a guaranteed customer base, these institutions now not only have to fight for the available customers, but also face competition from non-traditional banking institutions such as telephone companies, supermarkets, retailers, computer companies and others. The increasing pace of competition, the changing regulatory framework and improved information systems are also putting powerful pressures on banks and financial institutions to design and develop appropriate strategies for survival. The increase in competition has eliminated any borders that originally existed among the various players. This paper will examine the underlying factors in financial services competition and how banks/ financial services providers employ appropriate survival strategies to remain ahead of the competition. 4 4 6. Adding Value through Financial Inclusion Financial Inclusion is a concept associated with extending financial services to a large segment of the society that is excluded from the formal banking system. Financial services providers have realized that there is great potential in the unbanked population and are now increasingly reaching out to this segment. This paper will explore the current trends and prospects of financial inclusion in the region. It will also discuss the current strategies and innovative financial solutions being employed by successful banks and other financial services providers. 7. ICT as a Competitive Tool in Financial Services Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now an integral part of financial services delivery. Banks and other financial services providers are using ICT to attract customers in both traditional and non-traditional markets. Only those financial services providers that are able to leverage on the capabilities and opportunities presented by the changing technological environment will be well positioned to maintain a distinct competitive advantage. This paper will highlight the current trends in ICT and its impact on financial services. 8. Outreach Programme: Leadership and Team Building in Financial Services A good Human Resource (HR) Strategy must include focused leadership and building strong teams in organizations. A dynamic organization such as a bank or financial institution must be structured in specialized units or departments to maximize performance and achieve desired goals. Therefore, creating high performing teams that will deliver exceptional results is a major objective for every bank / financial institution. This will be a highly practical presentation (with role plays) by experts in team building techniques and will provide relevant insights into the behavioural processes through which teams evolve in business organizations and the specific behavioural factors required to institutionalize a “team culture” in a bank / financial institution. 5 5 PARTICIPANTS’ PROFILE The East African Banking School is a learning, interactive and networking forum, intended to provide professional exposure to as many financial services’ employees as possible.
