Welcome to the 2010 Minnesota State
Trap Shooting Championships.
Welcome to the 2010 Minnesota State Trap Shooting
Championships which will be our 100th. With the festivities
surrounding our 100th anniversary, requests for camping
spaces are coming in fast. This year’s shoot is shaping up to
be our biggest ever.
As in the past, we will make every effort to insure your experience at our 2010 shoot will be the best experience you will
ever enjoy at a state shoot. We will do everything possible
to make sure target presentation is optimal for the weather
conditions. Target adjusters will be readily available to make sure the presentation is
legal and to your liking. Events will start on time and event change over time will be
cut to a minimum. We have exciting evening events planned that will make you want
to stay at the club past dark. Tuesday night we will have a pork chop dinner free to all
shooters and families, courtesy of the MTA. Rick Eason has volunteered to cook using
his large grill. I’ve tasted his prime rib and can’t wait to try his pork! Wednesday will
be a repeat of last year’s free walleye dinner. George Pappas and crew will be on hand
to once again delight us with Minnesota’s favorite meal. On Thursday, we will down
free brats while shooting miss and out targets in front of the club house. This event is
once again sponsored by Bob Schultz of Target Shotguns with proceeds going to our
youth program. On Friday, we have our awards banquet recognizing our sub-junior
and junior state teamers and our Hall of Fame inductees, Mark Zauhar and William Van
Nieuwenhuzen. We will also hold our Friday night youth fund live auction to continue
raising funds for this worthwhile program. Once again look for some exciting items for
sale at this auction.
During the week, we will also have our silent auction with many interesting items for
sale. All proceeds from this auction go to the youth program just like the live auction
earnings. Make sure you look over the items. Bidding will close Saturday morning. Anyone with items they would like to enter into the auction are welcome to bring them to
the shoot. See me and we’ll get them entered.
Our annual membership meeting will be held Saturday morning. This year we have
changed the voting procedure, first to ensure we comply with ATA rules and second to
make voting available to more members. See the page devoted to this subject elsewhere in this program for the exact details.
I want to again thank all of our event sponsors as well as our advertisers. Their contribution helps make our program profitable. Special thanks to Remington Arms, Cabela’s
and Whiteflyer as they have been with us for most of my years as President. Please
favor them with your purchases which will help keep them with us.
Hope to see you in Alexandria
Mark Zauhar, President Minnesota Trap Association

SHOOTER’S RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
All shooters participating in any part of the program must have their current ATA
average card.
2.
Have all scores posted and averages figured on ATA Card before presenting it
to the Classification Committee.
3.
BE SURE - Once entry is made, it is final. No additions nor withdrawals will be
allowed after the event has started.
4.
Watch the boards and be ready to compete when your squad is called to the firing
line. There will be no waiting for a tardy shooter.
5.
If you do miss your squad, you may make up to 50 targets on the practice trap,
otherwise report to the office and you will be resquadded in the last squad if time
permits.
6.
No scores will be recorded if they are shot in any squad other than the one assigned
to you by the office.
7.
Check score after each post shot and be sure that they are scored correctly before
firing at a target at the next post.
8.
Only errors in addition can be corrected after a score sheet leaves the trap.
9.
Conduct yourself in accordance with ATA rules at all times.
10. Double check your entry cards. Be sure your Class, Yardage and all other
information is correct and legible. It is the responsibility of Ladies, Veterans, Sr.
Veterans, Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Novice and Ladies II to see that they are so
indicated on their entry cards and on the bulletin sheets so that they may be
included in the competition. Report omissions on the bulletin sheet to the cashier
and the score board attendants.
11. If you win or tie for a class, or win yardage, report to classification and have your
cards updated. Class move ups and earned yardage, will be posted on the score
board. Be sure to check; it is the shooter’s responsibility to be in the correct class
and to shoot at the correct yardage. Class advancements start Wednesday.
12. When a shooter’s score qualifies for more than one ATA or MTA trophy, the burden
is on the shooter to make the choice. The shooter’s failure to notify the tournament
director before shoot offs, within 15 minutes of the posting of the last event scores,
gives shoot management the right and the duty to make the determination and
choice of trophy for that shooter. When making this determination, category trophies
are considered superior to class champion trophies.
OPEN OR OUT
All guns must be unloaded with the action open at all times except on the
firing line or in the gun rack. Violators subject themselves to immediate
disqualification, without recourse, and dismissal from the grounds.
SHOOTERS
The MTA supports the continuing efforts of the National Rifle Association.
We encourage every shooter to join NRA and support their diligent work
to protect our rights as shotgun sportsmen.

HELP SAVE LABOR COSTS
Alexandria Shooting Park has done a great job controlling our
labor expense since they started holding our shoot. To help
maintain our low costs, the club and the MTA request that shooters
not wishing to save their hulls please catch them and hold them in
a bag until you are finished shooting and then discard them in a
trash bin. This will save the labor time required to clean up our
fields. Thank you for your help.

WEDNESDAY
MEANS WALLEYE
MTA Vice President, George Pappas, alias “The
Piddler” from The Minnesota Dog Squad, is cooking up
Minnesota walleye caught and donated by The MTA.
George cooks a mean fish! Helping George will be the
famous “Big Dog” himself, Dave Gilberg.
Join us in the main room of the clubhouse for dinner soon
after the day’s events, about 6:00 PM. We know for sure
it will start then because George hasn’t been in a shoot
off for a long time and still hasn’t.
Come as you are, bring a dish if you want, get an
autograph from our hero The Big Dog and enjoy a great
meal. We will have a jar for voluntary contributions to
our youth fund available for those who wish to help.
Everyone is invited.

Saturday Minnesota Trapshooting
Association Meeting Details
We will hold our association annual meeting on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. We will
review the past years financial details, discuss any new business, and hold our annual
elections. This year there are several open offices up for election so it is important all
members make every effort to attend our meeting.
This year we will be holding the voting on both Saturday and Sunday. After the close
of our meeting on Saturday, our association secretary will gather all nominations and
prepare numbered ballots. Each name entered into nomination at our Saturday meeting will be on the ballot. Each association member, who has recorded targets in at least
two different years and has a current ATA paper average card, will be able to sign for
and pickup a ballot. The ballots will be available at the classification desk after 12:00PM
noon Saturday. Each voter will then have until Sunday, at 10:00 AM to complete their
ballot and place it in the ballot box, which will be located at the classification table.
Ballots and the ballot box will only be available while a MTA board member is present
at the classification table.
Votes will be tabulated by the secretary and senior zone directors. Vote totals will be
posted at the classification table by 1:00 PM Sunday.
The MTA Board voted to adopt this new procedure to both comply with ATA rules and
to allow all members to have a greater opportunity to vote. The Board encourages all
members to exercise their voting rights.
Please support our
advertisers.
It is their generous
donations that make
this program possible.
Thank you!

NOVICE CLASS TROPHIES
As part of the MTA’s long term goal to increase our membership and
numbers of shooters at our state shoot, the MTA will pay half of any new
member’s ATA annual dues in 2010. In addition, we have a novice class
in every event so these new shooters will be competing among
themselves for a trophy. We hope these two changes will make it a more
enjoyable and accessible event for new shooters.
Your board asks each current member to encourage their club shooting
friends to attend one or more events at this year’s state shoot. Now is
really a great time to start a registered shooting career.
Please join us in patronizing the businesses listed
throughout this program, and thank them for their
support and their products.
A special Thank You
to all our sponsors and advertisers.

state team = 700 16 yd, 700 HDCP, and 500 Doubles. Senior vets and sub-juniors will
be exempt from the doubles requirement and shooters will also be required to shoot all
events in their zone shoot or the HAA events at the state shoot. In addition, shooters
must register targets at a minimum of four different Minnesota clubs during the target
year with one exception. If the zone shoot is held at Alexandria, site of our state shoot,
then the zone and the state shoot will count as two of the four club requirement.

HALL OF FAME CRITERIA
The Minnesota Trapshooting Hall of Fame honors shooters whose
accomplishments bring credit to our sport. Men and women of exceptional
diligence and sportsmanship are inducted; integrity and character are the first
requirements for consideration.
Shooting members must also meet the following criteria:
1. Ten years of registered trapshooting in Minnesota and 25,000 singles
targets.
2. 3 State Championship Titles… Singles, H.O.A., etc. or 10 years on a State
Team
Supporting members meeting the following criteria:
1. Ten years of work supporting shooting in the State… as an MTA Officer,
Delegate, Gun Club owner, operator, worker, etc. Involvement in special
programs, from youth training to press relations will be considered.
Trapshooting in Minnesota encompasses great individuality and diversity. The
Officers, therefore, may modify the letter, but not the spirit, of the above criteria
to accommodate special circumstances.
Candidates will be nominated by members of the nominating committee.
Minnesota shooters are urged to bring the names and accomplishments of
qualified candidates to the attention of the Delegates and Officers of the MTA.
To submit a candidate for either category, please send a letter and a resume to
the Minnesota ATA delegate.

Hall of Fame Contributor Awards
The Trapshooting Hall of Fame maintains a museum at the home
grounds in Vandalia, Ohio, and provides a research library for the history
of our sport. It also awards college scholarships and conducts a youth
program to promote the future of trapshooting. Half of the entry in the
award is donated to the Hall of Fame. We encourage you to participate
and support its various activities.
Winner of Hall of Fame Purse to receive trophy from Shamrock

2010 Hall of Fame
Shooting Member
Mark Zauhar
Mark is being inducted into our Hall of Fame
in both the shooting and contributor categories. Mark’s ATA record began in 1988 when
he registered 200 targets at the Minneapolis
gun club. From that first experience, the hook
was set. To date, Mark has registered over
100,000 singles, 91,000 handicap, and 75,000
doubles. Mark reached the 27 yard line in
1996 at Eau Clair, Wisconsin; he became a
AA singles shooter in 2000, earned his AA27AA pin in 2002, and became AAA
shooter in 2005. Mark also was our state handicap champion in 2005. In 2007, he
earned his Grand Slam when he broke 100 doubles at the Nebraska State shoot.
In 2008, Mark earned a spot on the men’s All American team.
Mark was first elected to the MTA Board in 2005 as Vice-President. He was
elected President in 2006 and has served in that capacity for the last five years,
the longest consecutive term in our history. During Mark’s years on the board,
our association has seen significant changes. We have a mission statement, goals
and objectives, and have aggressively pursued additional forms of funding. As
a result, our bank account has grown ten fold, our youth shooting program has
experienced an annual ten percent a year growth, and we have sponsored the first
and second annual high school state championships. We are in the process of
establishing a tax exempt non-profit organization for our youth program that will
greatly enhance our fund raising. A new membership dues program was initiated
to help increase our new member rate. We have seen our relationship with the
Alexandria Shooting Park stabilized and we have rewritten our by-laws. Mark
initiated the concept and then teamed with Representative Dave Dill to begin the
work of developing a new, metro area, all purpose shooting facility. We have twice
yearly member newsletters to improve our membership communication. Mark
also wrote regular TRAP and FIELD articles for several years to further the
communication within our association.
Besides trapshooting, Marks enjoys hunting and has harvested nineteen of the
North American twenty-eight big game animals, including all four of the mountain sheep, hunting’s “Grand Slam.” Mark’s favorite memory in trap shooting was
the year his daughter Kelsey won a shootoff against Nora Martin at the Grand
American, under the lights, and earned her twenty-seven yard pin in the process.
Second would be his perfect hundred from twenty-seven yards during the Florida
State shoot.
52
2010 Hall of Fame
Shooting Member
Bill Van Nieuwenhuyzen
William D. Van Nieuwenhuyzen (aka Van
Alphabet) started shooting ATA registered
targets in 1982. Dave Stearns, the manager of
the Luverne, MN trap club got him involved at
that time.
In his first Minnesota State Shoot, he was
awarded the “New Shooter Trophy – High
First Year Shooter on 400 Championship
Targets”. It was a pheasant print, which is still
hanging proudly in our family room. He was immediately hooked! Bill took a
very old motor home to that shoot, along with a bunch of guys from his local trap
club in Luverne. Bill didn’t bring his wife, and that was the first and only time
that happened!
Since then, Bill has won many events nationally, including the Mint Handicap in
Las Vegas in 1983 and the 200 yard class singles in Phoenix that same year. Then he
was really hooked! Bill has several trophies from the Grand American, and his most
cherished one there was the Nora Martin Doubles Champion in the early ‘90s.
His Minnesota State trophies are numerous, and Bill has been on the State Team
for most of his shooting career. Bill won our HAA in 2004 and our HOA in
1993 and 2000 along with many other place trophies.
As the years progressed, Bill’s vision correction surgeries started failing him
somewhat. Or do we call that old age?! So his winnings have tapered off a little.
Regardless, he still enjoys the shoots immensely. He hasn’t missed a Minnesota
State shoot in 28 years, and not many in that same period in Iowa, South Dakota
and the Grand American. During the late 80’s and early 90’s, his son Jeremy was
involved in shooting, and Bill was very proud to have him on the Jr. State Team.
These days, at the shoot, you will find Bill rushing from the line to get back to the
motor home so he can attend to his many cooking duties. Bill and his wife, Rose,
have fired up the grill on hundreds of occasions, sometimes their own, sometimes,
cooking for others. On one occasion, Bill missed a shoot-off because no one else
could fry the fish just the right way. He is looking forward to many more of these
events for both the pleasure of shooting and the socializing.
Anyone who will ask Bill about his favorite part of ATA participation will hear
from him that it is the many cherished friendships that he has made with a lot of
really neat people over all these years. Winning is nice, but not nearly as important to Bill as the memories and friends that he has made.

100TH MINNESOTA STATE SHOOT CELEBRATION
In 2010, we will be holding our 100th state shoot. Cindy Townsend is the
committee chair for the preparation for this special event. As part of the planning for the 100th state shoot, the board has decided to create interest and have
some fun at the same time by holding a contest to determine the design of a
commemorative logo. We are asking interested members to submit their design suggestion for a logo for our 100th shoot. In developing your designs,
keep in mind that the logo will likely be used to decorate hats, shirts, trophies,
etc. so it must be embroidable in smaller detail. People wishing to submit
their designs should do so before the end of this years state shoot. The board
will select the winner who will receive $100 cash. All submitted entries will
become the property of the MTA when submitted for consideration. Give

The Minnesota Weapons Collectors Association was established in 1954
by a group of collecting enthusiasts. The intent of the organization was
not only to provide an opportunity for collectors to gather to buy, sell and
trade, but also to provide a forum for social interaction and fellowship
between those interested on the hobby of arms collecting.
The Minnesota Collectors name was agreed upon due to its coverage of
a broad spectrum of arms collecting, including aboriginal weapons
through antique arms and edged weapons, up to modern day arms
including ammunition, accessories and accoutrements. The wide
diversity of interest is viewed as one of the strong points and benefits of
the group.
Today, the membership of the MWCA stands over 1,000 with a
significant number of charter members still actively involved. The
organization sponsors eight meetings or exhibitions per year in
Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, at the fairgrounds in Falcon Heights,
Rochester, and now Blaine and Owatonna, Minnesota. These are 300 to
600 table events limited to 100 percent arms and directly-related
accessories. Individuals from throughout the United States commonly
participate.
