Championships are over and what a great ride it was! Many thanks go to all of our sponsors, volunteers, and competitors for making this one of the best. I particularly want to thank those volunteers that worked all day for four days of the show; Karen and Kassidy Peacock, Jennifer Jarvis, Jan Colley, Margaret Kripke, Nancy Prochaska, Mary Gray, Jennifer Burts, Carolyn Vandenberg, Evie Tumlin and Bess Reineman. If I have forgotten to include someone here, please let me know, I want to acknowledge you in the next newsletter. The silent auction was a tremendous success for the GMO’s that sent volunteers to help us with the show. $2972 was raised for the six GMO’s that contributed items to the silent auction and provided volunteers. Following is the breakdown on the distribution of the money: CTDS: $997.11, FWDC: $958.46, ADA: $413.53, MSEDA: $316.91, ADU: $285.99 The FEI Juniors and Young Riders raised slightly more than $3,500 to send the teams to Kentucky through the raffling of the East-Texas lake house, the timeshare in Florida, the Cupcake Wars and the Battle of the Barn Baskets. Southernwood Farms was the lucky recipient of the free tack stall for 2012 as their basket sold for $400. Many thanks go to Mary Nuttall and Paula Howard on their creative masterpiece. HDS is sponsoring the third annual Schooling Show Championships on December 17 and 18. The great news is that this show will be held at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center and there is an open show affiliated with the Schooling Show Championships. This is your opportunity to practice at that new level before the show season kicks off in January at the Winter Show on January 21 and 22. Joan Darnell will be judging the championship classes as well as the FEI and upper level national classes in the open show. The cost of this show is very affordable. Don’t miss out on the opportunity. The show closes on December 5. Included in this newsletter is the flyer for the awards banquet. It will be held at the Sam Houston Horse Park again. Also included in this newsletter are the eligible candidates for the recognized shows. If you think that your name has been left off of this list, please contact Kathy Jones or Sandy Venneman. I am pleased to report that Cyndi Craig has agreed to serve on the HDS Board as the Sponsorship Chair that was vacated when Jaye Dunbar was elected to the Treasurer position in September. I am sad to report that Amanda Bruce has stepped down as the Special Events Chair. Commitments to her family, ranch and job search prevent her from continuing in this capacity. If anyone is interested, please contact me to discuss the role of the Special Events Chair. Also open is the Volunteer Chair. The Volunteer Chair will have the enviable position of getting to work with the fabulous Gillian Gourlay at the CDI and Championships next year. If we are really lucky, she might even be convinced to help us at the other shows. If you are interested in volunteering at the Winter Show, please contact me. Off to the 2011 USDF Convention! 1 G. LOWELL BOOMER October 12, 1911 - November 20, 2011 G. Lowell Boomer of Lincoln, Nebraska, died Sunday, November 20, 2011. Lowell was born on October 12, 1911, in Burwell, Nebraska, to George R, and Grace Y Boomer. Lowell graduated Lincoln High School, and attended the University of Nebraska School of Music, Lincoln. While in High School, he won first place on the clarinet in a Lincoln Music contest playing “Concertino” by Weber. He then went on to win the contests at the State, Regional and National levels. He played clarinet for many years in the Lincoln Municipal Band summer concert series in Lincoln, alongside his wife, Gladys who played trumpet. Lowell studied printing while in Junior High School, and started a letter shop with a mimeograph and multigraph machine in his mother’s Teachers Employment Agency. It grew to become Boomer’s Printing Company, which Lowell would head as President for the next eighty years, at which time he sold the company to its employees. His avocation has been a lifetime love of horses, and he became internationally renowned in the equestrian world. He was the founder of The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) in Lincoln in 1973, and served for sixteen years as its Chief Executive Officer. Today, USDF is headquartered in the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, with over 30,000 members nationally. In 1989, he established The Dressage Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska “to cultivate and provide financial support for the advancement of Dressage.” The Dressage Foundation’s national headquarters is permanently anchored in Lincoln. He has won an extensive array of equestrian honors throughout his lifetime. He was the first inductee into the USDF Hall of Fame, and has received the USEF (United States Equestrian Federation) Lifetime Achievement award. The Chronicle of the Horse named Lowell as “one of the 50 most influential horsemen of the 20th century worldwide.” Lowell Boomer was an active, lifetime member of the Lincoln Downtown Sertoma Club, and was involved with Sertoma’s sponsorship of Cedars Home for Children when it was founded in 1947. Lowell is survived by son John and wife Lynn, Lincoln, NE; Son Jim, Ft Wayne, IN; three grandsons John Boomer, jr., David Boomer, Mark Boomer; two grand daughters Beth Bivins and husband Mike, and Melissa Kleber and husband Robert; Three great grandsons Adam and Benjamin Boomer, Adam Kleber. Lowell was preceded in death by his wife Gladys, his parents, three brothers and one sister, and daughter-in-law, Lois. He leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and former horsemanship students. Condolences or personal reflections may be left at www.roperandsons.com. 2 USEF and USET Foundation Set to Host Six Olympic Games Preparation Dressage Clinics Source: USEF Lexington, KY - Beginning in December, the USEF and USET Foundation will host six Olympic Games Preparation Dressage training sessions/clinics. Riders will have the unique opportunity to work with USEF Technical Advisor Anne Gribbons and U.S. Olympic, World Equestrian Games and Pan American Games medalist Steffen Peters. These clinics will focus on preparing potential team riders for the 2012 Olympic Games Selection Trials and Olympic Games. The clinics are by invitation only, based on criteria set forth by the USEF High Performance Dressage Committee and concentrating on athlete/horse combinations with international competition experience and the prospect of contributing to a Team or Individual medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. For more information please see the USEF website. Clinics will take place December 2011 - April 2012 with three being held in California and three in Florida. "The USEF/USET Foundation Elite Pre-Olympic Games training session/clinics will focus on preparing potential team riders for the 2012 Olympic trials and the Games," said Gribbons. "With that in mind, Steffen and I will focus on the performances of our Grand Prix horses, enhancing their work during training, warm-up and in while performing their dressage test. We hope to offer advice and positive criticism which will further polish the performances, increase the confidence of horses and riders and ultimately improve the scores of our elite athlete/horse combinations." These clinics have been made possible by the USET Foundation through a gift from Betsy Juliano, a member of the USET Foundation's National Advisory Committee. USDF Congratulates GMO Winners 2011 Lexington, KY (October 31, 2011) - The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to congratulate all of the winners of the 2011 GMO Awards, which will be presented during the Board of Governor's General Assembly at the 2011 Adequan/USDF National Convention and Symposium, presented by SmartPak, in San Diego, CA. These awards are given annually to recognize outstanding achievement within USDF's GMO community. Recognition is given in the following categories: GMO newsletter and website layout and design, first person experience articles, and general interest articles. USDF also recognizes outstanding volunteers at the regional level along with the recipient of the Ruth Arvanette Memorial Fund grant. Congratulations to Houston Dressage Society! This year's winners were: GMO Newsletter Awards: Layout/Design: GMOs with 175 to 499 members First Place: NEW Dressage Association, Forward, February and May 2011 Honorable Mention: Houston Dressage Society, Collective Remarks, April and June 2011 To view the list of winners, please click here. 3 Ten Medals for Equestrian Team USA at the 2011 Pan American Games Source: USEF Nov. 4, 2011 It was an epic adventure in Mexico for the United States Equestrian Federation's Dressage, Eventing and Jumping Teams. They won a record 10 medals across the three disciplines and cemented a solid foundation for the 2012 Olympic Games. Bookended by double Gold medalists Steffen Peters, who rode the Hlavacek's Weltino's Magic to record scores in the dressage ring at the Guadalajara Country Club, and Christine McCrea, who jumped five immaculate rounds on Windsor Show Stables' Romantovich Take One at the same venue 10 days later, the U.S. won at every turn. The dressage team of Peters, Heather Blitz, Marissa Festerling and Cesar Parra got the winning going - they cruised to Team Gold over Canada and Colombia - and then reinforced it with a sweep of the individual medals for Peters, Blitz and Festerling. The standard was extraordinary and with each test, a new challenge was handed over. Personal bests were the order of the day for the freestyles, Blitz and her Paragon made Olympic veteran Peters work for every point, after they wowed the crowd at their first Team Championship. Festerling commandeered a terrific Bronze medal effort out of a very energetic Big Tyme and also stood on the podium for the second time at her first championship. "What an amazing day and an amazing competition," said Peters. "I still have to think about the moment that I came out of the arena and when the scores were announced it probably took 30 seconds, but it seemed like three hours. It is a very exciting day, congratulations to my teammates. The big score that Heather pulled in - I don't think I've ever had that much pressure going into the arena knowing that there was an 86 percent in front of me." The eventing team arrived in Mexico with something to prove. Of the five riders, only one had represented the U.S. before and that rider, Buck Davidson, took his role as Team Captain to heart. It began in the dressage where they all rode into the top 10 individually, Michael Pollard rode his wife Nathalie's Schoensgreen Hanni to second, Hannah Burnett was right behind him in third on Jacqueline Mars' Harbour Pilot, followed closely by Davidson who rode Sharon Will's Absolute Liberty in the pathfinder position to fourth, right behind him was Shannon Lilley on The Lilley Group's Ballingowan Pizazz, and Lynn Symansky coaxed a masterful effort out of Donner who found the atmosphere at Club Hippica quite exciting. They all were chasing Canadian Jessica Phoenix individually - but their lead as a team was secure. Only the top three individuals from each nation could return to jump for individual medals and the U.S. added two more double-clear efforts, moving Burnett into the Individual Silver position and Davidson into Individual Bronze. Pollard had two rails down and settled for fourth. The jumping team arrived with more than just completing a Pan Am sweep on the brain - they were also seeking qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games. They never wavered in the face of that enormous pressure. They jumped eight clear rounds between them in the Nations Cup to secure Team Gold by a wide margin over Brazil and Mexico. Led throughout the first four rounds by two-time Olympic Gold medalist Beezie Madden on Coral Reef Via Volo - Christine McCrea and Romantovich Take One sat second, McLain Ward and Antares were third, the fourth American horse, RCG Farm's Uceko, ridden by Kent Farrington, had the same fate as some of his teammates in other disciplines, as only three from each nation could go forward to the Individual Final. He was in seventh going into the Individual Final. "I'm just really, really proud of us as a team," said McCrea. "We really came together. We came here with a goal and we achieved it, and I'm just really proud." Javier Fernandez set a difficult track for the fifth round of jumping - not backing off of the1.60m maximum height. Ward and Grant Road Partners, LLC' Antares F had the middle element of the triple combination down to end up fourth - Brazilian Bernardo Alves moved up to the podium on Bridgit - so it came down to a clash between two American women. McCrea set the standard jumping second to last on a super-charged Romantovich Take One. They jumped an impressive clear inside a very difficult time allowed. Madden had it all to play for - without a point in hand on Coral Reef Ranch's mare over her teammate. Less than a tenth of a second determined the fate of the medals, and Madden was 7/100ths of a second late. She added one time fault and McCrea suddenly found herself a double Gold medalist at her first Pan American Games. Madden settled for Silver in a classic and classy performance. "Thank god I have a strong team here and Chris was to take it up - I am happy it was an American (that won)," said Madden. "We were still Gold and Silver and with the Team Gold it was a fantastic week for us so no complaints." And it was never threatened. They added zero to their dressage scores in the team competition, jumping clean and fast around the cross-country course at Santa Sofia Golf Course and then jumping five double-clear rounds in the team show jumping round on Sunday. "I would like to give really special congratulations to my team," said Chef d'Equipe Mark Phillips. Over 70 ateendees were present to hear Heather talk about her Pan American Gold and Silver medals, how she trains Paragon and her strategy to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. Houston Dressage Society to Offer USDF “L” Education Program Part 2 in 2012 The “L” Program offers a comprehensive curriculum created to teach participants how to evaluate dressage performance at Training through 2nd Level. The “L” Program is also intended to qualify individuals to officiate at schooling shows, to serve as continuing education for licensed judges, and to serve as a prerequisite for entering into the USEF “r" Judges Training Program. Part 2 is comprised of four parts (D1, D2, E and Final Exam) and you may only attend the D Sessions and the Final Exam as a participant. Sessions D1, D2 and the Final Exam must be attended in order but Session E can be done throughout the program. Session D2: April 28 – 29, 2012, Maryal Barnett, Great Southwest Equestrian Center, Katy, TX Final Exam: June 9 – 10, 2012, Bill Solyntjes and Joan Humphrey, Great Southwest Equestrian Center, Katy, TX Click HERE Registration for Candidate Evaluation, Information and LYON (FRA) TO HOST FEI WORLD CUP™ JUMPING AND DRESSAGE FINALS IN 2014 Source FEI: Following the withdrawal last week of Guadalajara's (MEX) bid to host the FEI World Cup™ Final Jumping in 2014, the FEI Bureau has today allocated the FEI World Cup™ Jumping and Dressage Finals 2014 to Lyon (FRA). The French city was one of two bidders for the 2014 Finals. "We very much regret that Guadalajara was not able to comply with the FEI requirements within the timeframe and we understand that they need some more time to put on a perfect event. They are now working on a bid for the FEI World Cup™ Final in 2015 and we look forward to receiving it," said FEI Secretary General Ingmar De Vos. "We are delighted to give the 2014 FEI World Cup™ Finals in both Jumping and Dressage to Lyon and look forward to spectacular sport in France." The FEI World Cup™ Jumping and Dressage Finals 2014 will run from 16-20 April. 10 Here ye, Here ye… Come one, Come all… It’s that time of year when the winds start to howl and our horses hooves will soon be crunching on frozen ground but I know something that will help warm everyone’s heart. Their documentation was sent in through the United States Equestrian Federation for the United States to host the WEG at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida. The Expression of Interest documents are the first step towards submitting a bid to host the FEI World Equestrian Games. "We are very excited for the bid," said ESP President Michael Stone. "We believe it will be a great opportunity for the Village of Wellington, Palm Beach County, and the State of Florida. We believe that working on this bid will help bring ESP-produced events to the next level and will only help increase the quality of our shows and the exposure of equestrian sport." Was your furniture and carpeting chosen with your horses in mind? Is your mail made up primarily of horse catalogs and horse magazines? Do you get up before dawn to ride? Go to horse shows? Clinics? [but have trouble getting up for "work?"] If you do have dresses, do they all have pockets? Do those pockets often contain bits of carrot, hay, or sweet feed? When you meet a new person do you always ask them what kind of horse they have and pity them if they don't have one? Do you remember the name of their horse sooner than you remember their name? If you answered YES to one of the above, there is still hope. If you answered YES to two, you are in serious trouble. My advice to all of you with three or more YES's is to sit back and smile, turn to the smiling person next to you and know that your life will always be filled with good friends and good horses and it will never be boring.
