History theives in our midst!
For some weeks now we have been
trying to look into several different
reports of strange activities in the
Pumpkin Hill area of this beautiful island. So far all of our attempts
to investigate have lead to closed
mouths and brick walls, but the little
we have learned has convinced us of
the necessity to pass on what we do
know and let stronger souls find the
truth.
First let us tell newer readers a little
about Pumpkin Hill. It has long been
understood that Pumpkin Hill is a
dead volcanic peak, part of the same
range that form the islands of Roatan
and Guanaja . Infact Utila gets its
name from the Mayan word (and the
islands old name) Uttla, which in
mayan means little smoke. Because
it will have bearing to the following
story we would like to point out that
Uttla when written with the mayan
equivalent of a capitol letter at the
beginning has a slightly different
meaning…Temple of smoke.
About three weeks ago we started
receiving reports of nocturnal landings and take offs from the new
runway. A few of the local guys who
ride their motorbikes down their had
reported being “ruffed up” by guys in
American military uniforms, and told
not to tell anyone what they had seen.
One of these guys was brave enough
to tell us what he saw, but made us
promise not to print his name, as he
is scared about his own safety and
that of his family. What he saw, was
what appeared to be soldiers loading
heavy wooden crates onto a Chinook
helicopter with no markings. Even
as he told us this he broke down and
asked not to print this information
but we feel it is the islanders right to
know what is going on.
ily. Interestingly enough his research
at the time pointed towards a migration of the Mayan royalty and high
priests to the bay islands of Honduras, during the Spanish invasions on
the mainland. Taking with them their
treasures and libraries. But no-one to
date knows exactly where they chose
to hide or where the final resting
place of the royal Mayan treasures.
There has been a lot of building
activity in the Pumpkin Hill area over
the last couple of years and it has
accelerated to an unprecedented level
this rainy season, but why build in
rainy season?
Okay let me return to the alternative translation of Uttla. Temple of
Smoke. What I will now tell you
will probably leave you as chilled as
it did us when we found out. In the
Mayan tradition smoke was held, by
the priests, as the form gods would
choose to manifest themselves, taking physical form from their burnt
offerings. In all of the final records
found left by the Maya, references
are found to the royal family and
Mayan histories being kept safe by
the gods from the Spanish invaders
in the Temple of the Living Gods.
According to research by our local
archeologist two other Mayan words
were used to reference the Temple of
the Living Gods, these words were
Atuttla (Temple of the Smoke Gods)
and our old namesake, Uttla.
Surely it would be easier to build
with dry roads and easy transport?
One thing about rainy season at
Pumpkin Hill, there are not so many
tourists there, not so many “prying
eyes”. We managed to take some
aerial photographs (above) and
believe they start to explain what has
been going on.
We spoke to a local archeologist,
he is an American (who married on
Roatan six years ago and now lives
here), and who has been searching
for the lost White Mayan City here
in Honduras for the last twelve years.
He told us that about three years ago
he had to stop his research on the
white city because what he describes
as “typical U.S. government agents”
had threatened himself and his fam-
When we obtained this information
we decided to take matters into our
own hands and have a look at a building that we had been told regularly
had nocturnal truck trips arriving
empty and leaving “heavily loaded
down but seeming almost empty” as
one pumpkin hill resident put it.
We went during the day and what we
found amazed us. Using the help of
a couple of local builders we entered
the “house”. At first it seemed a
normal small one bedroom cabin,
then we entered the bathroom to find
it was the entrance to a recently dug
tunnel. As we were about to enter a
truck came into the property and we
had to hide further up the hill. Four
men in military style jumpsuits carrying automatic rifles, loaded what
looked like very heavy but relatively
small objects into the back of the
truck. The weight of these objects
was obvious not only by the way the
men were struggling but also by the
way the suspension would drop each
time something was loaded. One of
the guys noticed the broken lock on
the door and then talked into their radio. We didn’t wait around as both of
our local friends said we should make
a swift exit, and to be honest I think
we were all a bit scared. We went
over the back of Pumpkin Hill to see
two small army helicopters buzzing
the area as if looking for something
and decided to leave by the beach to
the end of the new airport as there
was plenty of cover to hide from
the helicopters. To our amazement
when we arrived at the end of the
airport, the same truck we had seen in
pumpkin hill was off-loading into a
Chinook and the two smaller helicop-
ters had landed but all still had there
engines going. Within seconds the
cargo had been loaded and all three
helicopters took of and the truck
drove off at high speed. We were so
scared we waited for an hour before
walking the rest of the way round the
coast till we reached the point. Only
then feeling a little safer.
We believe that Pumpkin Hill is the
fabled Temple of the Living Gods
and certain parties have been hiding
this information because, under Honduran law, if any artifacts or treasure
were found on the island, any money
made from selling or exhibiting these
artifacts has to be split equally. These
same parties have been working with
the American military to remove
treasures and important artifacts
from this island. We understand this
will come as a surprise to almost
all of you, but we had our office
windows smashed and both our
computers stolen two days ago and
also an anonymous threat left on one
desk which simply read “don’t print
anything about Pumpkin Hill if you
want to print another paper”. We are
already in above our heads but felt if
it is the last thing we print, you still
have a right to know. Incase they do
shut us down we would like to thank
all of you who supported us, and we
hope someone can sort this mess out.

NEWSINBRIEF
Carnival Committee Meetings
On the 16th of March the organizers of Sunjam got together with the Carnival
Committee to discuss changing dates in order to leave a week between the 2
events. The dates agreed upon are:
Carnival 22-30 July and Sunjam 5th August.
The Carnival Committee met again on the 20th of March to decide how merchants and businesses will be charged over the Carnival week. Bars, restaurants,
hotels and stores will pay a set price according to their size. The businesses on
the main road will pay more than those out of town. The dive shops have always
willingly donated money and will do so again this year through UDSEC (the
dive organization).
All funds raised this year will go towards building bathrooms at Chepes beach.
For information about the rental of spaces for this year’s Carnival please see
Michelle. Her office is located above the Utila fire station.
Strike in Ceiba
On Wednesday 15th of March all bridges out of La Ceiba
heading towards the airport and dock were blocked by taxi
and bus drivers protesting the introduction of mini buses
in the city. One taxi driver told us “There are too many
permits as it is, with more there will be less work and prices would have to go up in order for us to make a living”.
By 2pm that afternoon the bridge to the airport had been
re-opened and the last flight to Utila was FULL.
Parrots Dive Center re-opens
After closing its doors about two years ago, Parrots Dive Center re-opened this
month. The dive center offers PADI courses, fundiving, whaleshark safaris and
snorkelling. It is located on the main street next to JC internet.
Westjet offers flights from Canada
Canadian airlines Westjet are running weekly charter
flights from Toronto to Roatan and Montreal to La Ceiba.
These flights will continue while the demand is there. So
all Canadians living on the Bay Islands tell your family
“it’s time to visit”!
Off to La Ceiba
Earlier this month an American tourist almost fainted before entering the water to dive. He was suffering from
Hypovolemia (lowered blood pressure due to dehydration and lack of acclimatization). He was treated at the
Clinic with IV fluids and oral rehydration but before
leaving nearly fainted again. In cases like this overnight observation is necessary so Dr. John flew with him
to Ceiba where he was treated by Dr. Mardiaga at the
D’Antoni and kept in overnight for observation. He returned to Utila the following morning. Three days later a Canadian tourist suffered the same problems but
recovered quickly after IV and oral treatment.
(see page 15 for tips on preventing dehydration)
Gun shots in redidential areas
Many people living out of town have heard gunshots from hunters near their properties. Some of them
were lucky not to get shot. Shooting in residential areas and close to houses is not allowed and carries
a 500lps fine per shot.
Utila East Wind in demand
We would like to apologise to our readers and advertiser on Roatan. Last month’s newspaper was SO
popular on Utila and in La Ceiba that there were no copies left for Roatan! Don’t forget you can read
the Utila East Wind on-line at
www.aboututila.com The paper will soon be available on-line on
www.utilaeastwind.com See next months newspaper for the launching date!
Father’s Day celebrations
The students of Utila Adventist School
put on a great show at the Adventist
church on Thursday 16th March to celebrate Fathers Day. Every grade entertained the crowd with songs, poems and
short plays. Two Fathers were picked out
and brought on stage to be tested as to their parenting skills.
The church was filled with laughter as they changed diapers on
a dolly and then were blindfolded and asked to pick their child
out of a group by touching the children’s hands. They both succeeded. All the Fathers were then brought on stage and awarded
with “Best Father” awards. The 5th grade your song was great.
The tiny students of Wisdom Paradise school celebrated Fathers
Day on Friday17th with a party held in the schoolyard. The children had made cards with photographs of themselves with Dad
and they proudly sang the songs they had learnt. There was a
piñata filled with candy and then chocolate cake for everyone.
Nice to see the Dads sitting around chatting and getting THEIR
clothes smeared with chocolate!!
Bush’s supermarket
It is the beginning of a new era of convenience for Utila. Bush’s
Supermarket, owned and operated by Denny and Sherry Bush is
expanding their operations to meet the increase in demand created by the great influx in tourism on the island. An additional
3000 square foot of shopping floor has been added with modern
check out stations. There will be a great increase in the quantities and varieties of goods including fresh meats, vegetables
and frozen goods. Bush’s Supermarket is due to open expanded
operations on April 3rd.
St. Patricks Day celebrations
There was a party at the Barracuda to celebrate St.Patricks
Day on the 17th of March. The place was packed and
wild with body painting and free green shots for people
clad in green! Irish music was played all night and there
were a few VERY sore heads the next morning!
The Champa celebrated St. Patricks Day with an awesome jam session organize by Shawn. St. Patricks Party
Champa style was a night of live music with an enjoyable jam session organized by Shawn. Dan, Mike and Rob made up the rest of the
band and were joined by Reiner and Urs who altogether played to loud applause
and cheers from the crowd. The band breaks were filled with Shane Mcgowan,
The Fury’s and as the night wore on a few Dubliners tunes had the last men
standing singing along!

EFR training for teachers
Seven teachers, 4 from the public school and kindergarten and 3 from UMCC spent 2 days in February doing an
Emergency First Response course with instructors from
UDC. Neil Ross and Yamil Ortiz de Ora Ortiz donated 2
days of their time to train the teachers in many types of
medical emergencies. The teachers all passed the course
and are now waiting for their certification cards to arrive.
Utila Dive Centre provided the teaching staff and learning tools, The Mango Inn
donated the use of their conference room and Ace International covered the certification costs. It’s great to have so many teachers medically trained and a further
weekend of training is planned for the teachers of the Adventist school.
Thank you to the teachers for attending and to Andy, Neil and Yamil for their
time and willingness in organizing the course.

MUNICIPALITY
TALKS
The new garbage truck has finally arrived on Utila. This is
the first garbage truck that has
been paid for with municipal
funds. The other trucks were
donated to Utila.
♦♦
The next project on which the
municipality will work is the
public dock on the Cayes. The
Mayor hopes that the materials
will be ready within a week. At
the moment they are working on
the quota process. Furthermore
they are waiting on Troy’s barge
to be fixed, as it will be used for
planting the posts of the new
dock. The dock will be placed
in the same spot but will have
more posts so it will be stronger.
The municipality will fund the
construction of the new dock.
♦♦
The municipality is also working on plans for a new municipal
stadium. The aim is to develop
a playing field. So far it looks
positive. It involves 7000 m2 of
property.
♦♦
Work has begun on the 20 feet
access road into Camponado.
Hopefully the new access road
into the area will be finished
before the end of this year. The
funding for this should not be
a problem. Cascajo is currently
being moved from the point to
an area next to Camponado for
the construction. More about
this project will be known
around June of 2006.
♦♦
About 37,000 Lempiras have
been spent on cleaning the garbage dump. The municipality
would like to thank Mark Williams who provided a bulldozer
at a discounted price. The garbage dump is now in really good
shape.
♦♦
The pumps in the wells on the
island have been replaced this
month and the sign at the graveyard has been redone. Furthermore, the municipality would
like to start removing weeds on
the road to the airport.
♦♦
The sanitation project is still being worked on. The Mayor is
still in talks. About 16 million
Lempiras will be spend on this
project. It probably needs 18
small pumps to go to the special
treatment area.
♦♦
The municipality has received
many complaints about the
noise coming from the bars this
month. It believes that we all
have to co-exist and that it is
selfish to play music so loud so
late into the night. The mayor
asks the bars to comply with the
laws otherwise action will be
taken.
♦♦
The municipality hopes to complete one project per month. At
the moment it is working on
the access road to Camponado
which will take longer.
Finalmente ha llegado la nueva
camioneta de basura a Utila.
Esta es la primera camioneta
de basura comprado con dinero
de la municipalidad ya que los
otros fueron donados a Utila.
♦♦
El próximo proyecto en el cual
empezaremos a trabajar es el
muelle público de los cayos. El
Alcalde espera que los materi-
ales estén listos para la próxima
semana.
momento.

Las bombas en los
Gym opening this month
For those of you who have been waiting to pump some iron the good news is that Utila’s
first fitness studio, Ocean Fitness, will be opening this month in Sandy Bay.
The machines are in place and the health bar is ready to serve you a variety of drinks including meal replacement shakes, protein shakes, fruit shakes and juices.
After a good work out on the cardio machines, treadmills, bicycles or elliptical cross trainers you can concentrate on more specific muscles and toning with free weights, the four
station multi gym or one of the other weight machines.
If, after all that you are hungry, the health bar will be able to toss you up a BIG salad.
Opening hours will be 6am-8pm, Monday to Saturday. Closed from 12 - 2pm each day.
MAYOR ALTON COOPER
♦♦
Todavía están trabajando en el
proyecto de sanidad, el Alcalde
sigue yendo a charlas. Gastaran aproximadamente unos
16 millones de Lempiras en este
proyecto. Probablemente necesitara unas 18 bombas para esta
área de tratamiento especial.
♦♦

Hendersons family retired
We spoke to Rosalita Henderson about her and Archies recent retirement from the grocery business.
“We decided that after 32 years of running Tienda Popular Hendersons that we needed a break! It was such a long time of hard work but
it was a nice time. We raised our 3 kids and now they are grown up,
want to do other things and see some of the world! We decided to only
keep the Deposit of beers and frescos, charcoal and cigarettes plus the
dive shop and hotel. We would like to thank you all for shopping with
us for so many years!”
Archie, Rosa and kids.
Archie Hendersons parents ran the store for 55 years before Rosa and
Archie which adds up to 87 years of Hendersons being run
as a family store. The store has been taken over by local man
Joe Murry Castillo who already has a busy store on the road
into Camponado.

Bee story continued
According to Juansito Valdez it’s a karma thing with bees. “Good thinking and good will are important”, and after watching him move 10,000
bees without one stinging him you have to believe that he has an attitude
that bees like. “They were Blanca de Castilla, which are the smartest.
The small swarm on the outside was the guards but on the inside they
hadn’t settled yet (that takes about a month), so it only took a couple of
hours to move them. When they are settled it is much harder. You smoke
them in the same way so they think it is on fire but then they start to eat
the honey and they can hardly fly. It’s like they’re drunk on honey. Sadly
the nest has to be destroyed to move them”.
Bees have intrigued Juansito for nearly 30 years and his mentor was
Rego Bonilla who spent about 3 months passing on his knowledge.
“The most dangerous bees on Utila are the African. They are like mutton pepper, the hardest to move, the baddest but their honey is sweet like
molasses. They have to be willing to move and you have to be willing
to move them”!
The Blanco de estrilla are the most rare. Juansito has only seen them
once in 30 year. They are about 1.14” long and their honey has a lemonish taste.
Juansito believes the bee population on Utila is declining and there are
now far fewer nests. “They are getting scarce. Running from wickedness, they look for peace and happiness”.

Ladies football team fundraising
The ladies football team have been inventive with
their fundraising events and provided much entertainment with their modeling nights at La Pirata.
The events attracted a huge crowd and many people
would have paid more than the 20lps they charged at
the door. Patrick let them use the bar for free and the
entrance fee was collected to go towards the team
funds.
With a big game planned for the 8th of April in La
Ceiba they have also been working hard with bake
sales (excellent cakes!), raffles, barbecues and doorto-door collection from businesses. They STILL
have time to practice and are on the field Tuesdays
and Thursdays from 7pm-9pm going through their
paces.
If you would like to make a donation please drop it
off at HQ TV or with Roselia Jackson (Yaya) President, Katie Munoz- Secretary or Rosa Hinds- Treasurer.

Marlin in the bay
Hal Whitefield was fixing his fishing line when he saw a splash which
“frightened the life out me” close to the dock. The splashing didn’t stop
and Hal says it was like bombs going off in the water. Then he spotted the
tail and realized that it was a fish. A very large fish. He called for others
to help, jumped in the sea and tied a rope on the tail. It turned out to be a
9’4” Marlin. The Marlin had a sucker fish in his gill and Hal believes he
got himself into the shallow and was thrusting his head into the sand to
try and knock it out. “He had himself about 5’ into the mud and it was hell
to pull him out. He was like a post in the mud”. A thrashing one at that as
Hal reckons the Marlin said to himself ‘I’m not going on land” and ended
up pulling over all five people (Hal,Lejourn,Paul, Phil and Miss Floretta)
who were trying to pull him out! When they finally got him on the scales
he weighed in at 225lbs and measured 37” around!! On the same day
Rolando Crimmins(Babe) caught an 80lb wahoo! There’s some BIG fish
out there!!
Letter to the editor
April 2006
Dear editor,
I’ve been coming to Utila for 5 years and
when I arrived this time I was very disappointed that the first thing I got to see was
the Southern Relentless (the large cargo
ship moored near the lighthouse). My first
thought was “what an ugly thing for tourists to see when arriving to Utila”!
If I had not known all the beautiful things
about Utila before seeing this boat, it
would not have instilled much faith that
there were indeed beautiful things above
and below the water! My second thought
was “why is this thing allowed to moore
in the harbour, was there not a better place
for it”! So I asked a few local Utilians and
found that the boat has been moored there
for about four or five months! I was in
shock that for an island so dependent
on the tourist business and tourist perception of the island that it would be allowed
to be moored there so long!
So I asked more questions and took a little
boat ride to get a closer look, and what I
saw was disgusting! The bilge pump was
spewing out long trails of petroleum! Now
I’m no marine biologist but I’m sure that
this can’t be good for the reef! The second
thing I was amazed to see was the boat
dragging it’s anchor across the bay, again
I’m sure this can’t be good for the reef!
So in conclusion I think that the tourists,
Utilians and the reef have had enough of

Hello Utila East Wind,
Love your paper - like most of the island
Dr John’s (August 2005 edition especially) my favorite, followed by that great
account of a whale shark/sperm whale

These are the two fish (o.k. - one’s a mammal) that l’ve always been the most interested in & fascinated by since childhood!
Best wishes to my good friend the editor,

Why we live here
well it comes down to the truth of it,
there’s a whole lotta distance
between 16 and 65. Utila sits at around
the 16 degree mark on my globe,
Winnipeg is huddling at 65.
Now I know that this time of year can be
stressful for all, but I’d like to
offer you these thoughts, so you might,
even on your lousiest day, remark..
“at least we live here...” and have something really concrete & sh***ty to
compare it to.
nothing rhymes with winter
up north in the snow
getting anywhere, any-way
is too far to go
our jaws are like pit bulls’
clamped cramped clenched tight
we run to and from warm spots
our fingers turn white
my heat waves are hot flashes
my greenery...died
there is six months worth of dog sh*t
thawing outside
no leaves on trees
no fruit, no fowl, no fair!
only starchy white faces

and “inside” games...
Should you care???
YES!
you SHOULD island people!
take a moment to care!

Just Like You
Now that I am a mother things have began
to change I walk, talk and dress differently
even my thoughts are a bit strange.
You seemed to be old fashioned by the
things you did and said, but as the months
and years came and went I realized it was

I thought that discipline was torture something you did to be mean but now with
Tamir and Alexander I want to do the

You taught me to choose friends wisely
that is why I have just a few but the ones
that are still in my life are priceless just

You showed me Christianity by living
every word that you taught and said for

You’ve been faithful for years in Sunday
School the young adults every Sunday
you taught and now I’m walking right in
your footsteps because I wasn’t sent to

When you reach Heaven one day and look

you’ll say: Net, Girl how did you make it?
and I’ll say:“I made it because I lived just

Utila’s new communication tower
The new tower on Stuart’s Hill is a communications tower built by Tropico Telephone
and Internet (TTI) of La Ceiba. The tower is 60 feet high and is constructed of galvanized
steel with a concrete base. The tower is used to provide high-speed Internet to Utila,
La Ceiba, and Roatan. The communication system that is installed uses gigahertz-range
microwave communication to create high-speed connections across the sea. The level of
power used is much less than a cell phone, and the energy emitted by the tower poses no health hazard to humans or wildlife.
The result of this new tower is that the speed of Internet to the
island will increase from 3 megabits per second (Mbps) to 8
Mbps initially. The equipment on the tower has the capability
of providing up to 80 Mbps of Internet to leave room for future
growth.
This new tower is now in partial service and is providing all Internet to the island of Utila except for that handful of residents
that have their own private satellite Internet systems. To handle
future growth, TTI is also installing fiber optic cable from the
tower into Utila town to expand the capacity of the DSL system located behind Rivera’s Commercial across the street from
Miss Iris’ house. The tower will be fully in service,
with its link to Cortes, in about two weeks’ time.
Cortes, you ask? The tower will receive its connection to the
Internet from Puerto Cortes, 111 km from Utila. Nearly all
Internet connections in Honduras pass through Puerto Cortes
because that’s where the undersea fiber from Miami arrives in
Honduras. The microwave wireless connection between Cortes
and Utila is 111 km long and is believed to be the longest wireless data link in all of Honduras.
The installation of the Utila tower and the towers in Ceiba,
Roatan, and Puerto Cortes represents an investment of about
US$200,000 and more than a year’s labor by TTI. About 1/2
of that amount was invested directly on Utila which is now the
“hub” of TTI’s network.
I am seriously excited about the improvement in TTI’s network. TTI and the people of Utila are no longer beholden to
Hondutel’s terrestrial network (which used to carry Internet
traffic to TTI in La Ceiba), and we expect reliability and speed
to increase.
Lots of folks asked me if the Internet will be faster or cheaper as a result of this improvement. The answer is a qualified yes. Initially, reliability will be the biggest area of
improvement -- fewer outages, more reliable downloads, and clearer phone calls. Also,
TTI can now offer connections faster than 256k, which was the previous limit due to
limitations in the speed of the older network. As for cheaper, TTI hopes to be able to
lower prices in the future as we realize savings on our own Internet costs. At the moment,
however, with such a large investment that must be paid off, there are no immediate plans
to lower monthly fees. In the interests of full disclosure, and in case you were not aware,
I am a TTI employee and shareholder.
(Mbps) a 8 Mbps.

USA has 12 million illegal immigrants
According to a research bureau there are about 12 million illegal immigrants in the
United States. The researchers state that Bush’s policy
to keep illegal immigrants out of the States
did not work. Most of the immigrants enter the country through Mexico. They do
believe that the borders are patrolled more
strictly but that this also has a negative effect. It makes it more difficult for the illegal
immigrants who want to leave the States to
get out of the country so they are forced to
stay.
Americans want to use sharks as spies
American military scientists are developing a technique that should make it
possible to use sharks as
spies. According to them
it should be possible to
manipulate brain signals in sharks through
special neurological implants. The Pentagon
finances the project. The scientists hope that
they will be able to use the sharks as stealth
spies that can follow enemy ships.
Sharks might also be used to track down
chemical traces or electronic movements as
sharks have strong senses and a very good
smell. It is not the first time that animals are
being used for defense purposes. During the
Cold War Americans and Russians used dolphins and whales.

In the past six year the number of deaths
through measles almost halved. More and
more children in the South of Africa get
shots against measles and therefore more of
them survive, according to the United Nations. The number of deaths dropped from
871,000 in 1999 to 454,000 in 2004. Most
of the victims in 2004 were children under
five years. The majority died from compli-

Norops utilensis.
The Anolis family, known as Polychrotidae, already represents about
330 species but new species are
constantly being discovered. Most
anoles occur in bush or tree environments. Both the Bica’s Anole
and the Utila Anole are found in
the various types of forest habitats that occur here on the island
of Utila.
Bica’s Anole can be found in the
dryer hardwood forest habitat
whereas the Utilian Anole prefers
in the mangrove swamp habitat.
Both species sit calm on branches
in their preferable habitats. Their
unique camouflage allows them
to remain unseen to most viewers and to prey on various small
insects and spiders. A special adhesive organ located in their feet,
also found in Geckos, gives these
species the ability to maneuver up
and down the branches of their forest environment. This movement
allows these cold-blooded species
to raise and lower their body temperature using the sun’s rays.

ISLAND SYTLIE FISH PIE
It is rare I miss anything from home these
days but from time to time I do crave some
good home style cooking. Just like Mum
used to make. With that in mind here is a
simple recipe for fish pie, the only difference is using fish that are more used to life
in warmer waters. It is rather moreish, so
this recipe can feed 6 but I don’t reckon
you should have more than 4 of you and
then you can indulge or put some in the
fridge for the next day.
Ingredients:
8 large potatoes
1 Tin Spinach
1 Large Onion, finely chopped
1 Carrot, finely chopped
Some Olive Oil
1 Carton of Whipping Cream
1 1/2lb packet of Sour Crème (Crema)
1/4lb cheese
Juice of 1 Lime
1 1/2lb White Fish Fillet, skinned and
boned, Wahoo or Kingfish is good
Big Handful of Chopped Parsley
4 Eggs
How to make it
Peel and cut the potatoes and put then into
salted water, bring to the boil and simmer.
Carefully put the eggs into this when it
has come to the boil and leave for 8 mins,
remove the eggs and cool in water. When
they are cold peel them and cut into quarters and set aside.
Take the chopped onions and carrots and
slowly cook them in a little olive oil until
they are soft, about 10 mins. In the mean
time, cut the fish into slices, about as wide
as your thumb, and place into an appropriately sized dish, put the quartered eggs
into this dish as well. When the onions and
carrots are soft add the cream and bring to
the boil, take off the heat and stir in most
of the cheese (save a little bit of cheese to
sprinkle on the top later on). Also stir in
the sour cream, parsley and then season
with salt and pepper to your taste. Pour the
creamy mix over the fish and eggs and then
squeeze over the lime juice. You can leave
this mix and then finish the potatoes.
The potatoes should now be cooked so drain
them and mash them, then add some olive
oil and give it a good mix. The amount of
olive oil varies but enough to make it look
all creamy. Don’t worry about a few lumps
in the mash, they give it character.
Drain the spinach and put it into the dish
with the fish and the eggs. Now its time
to put the mash on top of the fish, the best
trick with this is to start with the edges and
then do the middle, this stops all the sauce
coming up the sides. Then sprinkle on the
remaining cheese you saved earlier and
chuck it in a hot oven for around half an
hour, it depends on your oven and can take
a bit longer but its ready when the top is all
crispy and brown.
The last part is the most difficult part. Now
wait 10 minutes before you start to eat it,
this gives everything the chance to get all
nice and gooey, plus it stops you burning
your mouth. I would serve it with some
broccoli with lots of black pepper on or a
nice salad whichever you fancy. Oh and a
nice glass of cold white wine of course.
LOCAL CHICKEN SOUP
Ingredients:
One whole
chicken
Breadfruit
Pumpkin
Carrot
Young corn
String beans
Potatoes
Kasava
Cabbage
Cilantro
Tomato paste
Onion
A seasoning pepper
Sweet pepper (green pepper)
Salt
Pepper
*a hot mutton pepper is optional
How to make it
Remove skin and cut up chicken.
Cut onion and sweet pepper and fry it with
the chicken in a little oil to brown.
Boil all the vegetables with the tomato
paste and add the browned chicken, onion
and sweet pepper.
Cook until tender (about an hour)
I was luck enough to arrive for the recipe
just as the huge pot of soup was ready and
it was delicious. If you like a bit of heat
then I recommend the mutton pepper.

Lent is a 40-day period of penance in which sharing the sorrow and sufferings of Christ are important to Christians. Originally it was a period of fasting to commemorate Jesus’ last 40 days, which he spent in the desert.
Palm Sunday is the last Sunday of Lent. On this day Jesus rode into Jerusalem and was greeted by the crowd.
Holy Monday is not a major feast. It is believed that the cleansing of the temple in the Holy City of Jerusalem
took place on this Monday.
Holy Tuesday is the day on which the famous incident between Jesus and Pharisees probably took place. The
churchman tried to trap Jesus into making a blasphemous, or, anti-god remark.Spy Wednesday is the day on
which Judas Iscariot, a disciple who turned into a betrayer, agreed to show the chief priest where they could
capture Jesus.
Maundy of Holy Thursday is associated with the Last Supper, the day before crucifixion. Jesus had his supper
with his disciples.
Good Friday was the day on which Jesus was crucified outside the walls of Jerusalem on the Calvary hill. The
Christian belief says that Jesus sacrificed himself for the men’s sins, to be died crucified.
Holy Saturday is usually called Easter Eve in Anglican churches. Nowadays it is mostly a Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican observance.
Easter Sunday is the day of the feast. This is the day on which the Christ is believed to have shown up himself
and that Jesus joined his disciples on a meal.
Remember Semana Santa is a week of
celebration and worship too

It was calm evening and a local man was sitting on his motorbike at Chepes looking out to
sea, as old sailors do, when a ball rolled past him! Thinking how strange it was he turned his
bike to light the grass towards the lagoon and went to get it. “I was going to take it home for
the kids”. The ball………was no where to be found!
How could a ball roll past him with no breeze and then disappear? He searched harder and
even got help from a Spanish man on the beach. They hunted for ½ an hour and with their skin
prickling and more than a little spooked, they gave up!

The color blue
BECOME AN
INSTRUCTOR
Most of us know that colors fade when we are diving
and that blue is the last color to go but did you know
this about the color blue?
In religious symbolism, blue means truth and is associated with the creative power of God. It has been
used by priests at the grave, for it is symbolic of
heaven.

In ancient Rome, blue was worn by the public servants, thus marking the beginning of the idea for
today’s police uniforms.
The expression “true blue” for constancy and fidelity
perhaps originated with mariners, who associated the
blue sky with freedom from storms.
“Something blue” in the wedding jingle comes from
the early Israelites, to whom blue symbolized love,
fidelity, and purity.

Whaleshark documentary on Utila
A documentary on the whalesharks of Utila has started production. Each year around this
time we have a huge population of whalesharks passing by the island. Some individuals
have been catalogued and identified returning for the past 8 years. So it is an ideal time for
production to start.
Funky Fat Fish Productions, a local underwater video company, have got together an array
of people from both Utila and around the world. Headed by Johannes Leichtle, a final year
Film Production Student from Vienna, Austria, they aim to produce a 45 minute film about
whalesharks and Utila. “The film is essentially about the whalesharks and research that is
going on here on the island, but we also want to capture the beauty, feel and character of the
island. So were going to try and interview as many people as we can about their lives and
opinions on the sharks,” said Johannes.
Dan Cain, cameraman, started filming last year to catalogue as many different sharks as
possible and record their behavior. “As an underwater videographer I have always wanted
to film sharks and these guys are amazing. We are so lucky here to have such access to them
and most people lives here are connected in some way to them, even if its purely economic
from money bought to the island from tourists wanting to see them. We also have some
other things to look at like the Rough Toothed Dolphins that are being studied by The University of Southern Missisippi, and the Swamper Iguanas,” said Dan.
“Last year I went out with Steve from Deep Blue Resort everyday tracking the whalesharks
and started to see some interesting behavior patterns. We want to see which sharks are coming back to the island, try and find out where they’re coming from and where they’re going
to. Also why do they come when they do, are they mostly male or female, old or juveniles.
We collected a lot of data last year but now we want to see if it correlates again,” he con-
tinued.
The makers want to include as many people as possible from all walks of life on Utila along
with any visitors who may have experience in making films or just a lot of enthusiasm to
be involved in a project. “We have the guys from Fish Bowl productions helping us, a guy
from Germany doing Geographic research on the island, another in Costa Rica who is going
to make us some animations, a group in Austria who will be making the music, journalist,
photographers, environmentalists, Marine biologists, fishermen, its starting to get very interesting!”
If you would like to help or are just interested the please contact Johannes by email at
[email protected]
Or visit their office at the Hideout internet between Utila Dive centre and Altons Dive
Shop.
If you have any photos of whalesharks here on Utila please email them to Johannes. They
will be submitted to an international photo identification library so that we can get a better
understanding of the worlds whaleshark population, numbers and movements.

Dive Site of the month
Old house by Matt Awty
Old House is the last dive site heading west in Turtle Harbour. The dive
site earned its name from the small houses that used to belong to coconut
harvesters along the beachfront and iron shore.
As with most of the sites in Turtle Harbour the mooring sits in 25/30 feet
(8/10m) of water on a coral shelf that extends back to the shallows. The
mooring is set back from the wall a short distance but is easily visible
from the edge of the wall.
This site is great for beginner or advanced divers as it has a huge wall
to dive and a shallower shelf extending out westwards at 60feet/18m for
less experienced divers.
Swimming north from the mooring takes you across the reef top to the
wall itself and a series of steep channels leading down the wall into the
depths of turtle Harbour. Swimming east you go along the wall towards
CJ’s drop off where the sheer size of the wall will amaze even the most
seasoned diver. To truly understand the size of the wall, swim out seaward a few feet/meters and look back at it.
Diving to the west the wall changes into a slope that does eventually
drop off at depth but levels out shallower onto a shelf at 60feet/18m
covered in Gorgonians and soft corals. This area provides a great habitat
for grazing Turtles and various types of Moray eels, and is less daunting
for the novice diver.
Currents can make the dive to the west a little more challenging as there
are few, if any, formations to break up the flow, so it’s important to make
a thorough pre-dive assessment of the environmental conditions.
Being so close to the drop off and deep water this dive site will often
surprise you with manta rays in the blue and quite often nurse sharks are
seen in the shallow areas. It’s also only a short boat ride out to where
Whale Sharks are often spotted.
Balloon fish and all types of Trunkfish, Cowfish and Triggerfish are residents on this part of the reef. Colorful Indigo Hamlets are common, as
are all of Utila’s usual reef creatures. For those into macro this is one of
the best sites for Lettuce leaf sea Slugs and other Nudibranchs.
Whichever way you choose to dive stick to the rules and enjoy Utila’s
underwater world.
History of Diving Part II
By Utila East Wind
In 1823 Charles Dean developed a “smoke helmet” with a suit, which was

mospheres so the diver was still supplied from the surface. The tank was simply
there for bailout. The book 20,000 Leagues Under the sea by Jules Verne speaks
of dives of 6 to 8 hours on the aerophore, but this is pure fiction.
In 1876 Henry Fleuss developed the first oxygen rebreather that used rope
soaked in caustic potash for the absorption of carbon dioxide. This allows the
divers to re-breathe the exhaled gas. He tested the device by staying in underwater in a water tank for an hour and later by walking along a creek bed at 5.5

In 1878 Paul Bert published the results of 670 experiments done with O2-enaries. They have an extensive underground network of roots. This anchors the plant and also allows it to absorb nutrients from the sediment.
Seagrass beds often grow alongside mangrove forests and coral reefs, such as ours here in Utila. This meadow can be made up of one species (mono- riched atmospheres and the use of a hyper baric chamber.

sedimentation the roots stabilize the seabed and they are important for many different animal species, mainly due to the provision of shelter and for
their extraordinary high rate of primary production (photosynthesis). As a result, coastal zones are provided with a number of ecological goods and
ecological services.

These ecosystems also act as important nursery grounds for many of our fish and invertebrate juveniles. They move into the seagrass habitat to take

advantage of the ample food supply and the abundant shelter and, depending on the species, then move towards the reef or lagoon. However, the
main importance of seagrass beds is as a final filter for the ground and lagoon waters making its way on to the reef. The leaves slow the passage of
WHALE SHARK DIVER
the water and encourage the remaining sediment to drop to the sea bed, leaving the clean water necessary for a healthy coral reef.
Seagrasses are themselves sensitive to water quality conditions, particularly those that affect water clarity. Waters that are turbid or cloudy as the
result of high amounts of suspended solids or algae do not allow the necessary sunlight to reach bottom-growing seagrasses. As a result, seagrasses
are a good indicator of the condition of the water. In areas of good water quality with low concentrations of suspended solids or algae-producing
nutrients, seagrasses can form dense “meadows”.
TURTLE HARBOUR NORTH SIDE SNORKEL
In many coastal areas the acreage of seagrasses has declined, such as here in Utila. These losses have been primarily attributed to development in the
TRIPS
watershed and damage due to the use of anchors. This has impacted the water quality, which is directly affecting our coral reefs.

Thinking Green
Garden of the Month
Starting this month the newspaper will go round Utila and take pictures of gardens. The nicest garden will be published in the next edition of the Utila East Wind. We
might have two gardens a month, as the aim is to put together a calendar at the end of the
year for the year 2007. The owners of the gardens that have been chosen will receive a free
calendar at the end of the year. So come on everybody! Get your garden in shape and who
knows... your garden might be featured in the next edition and on the Utila East Wind Garden calendar!
This month we have chosen Naida’s garden at Trudy’s Hotel as the Garden of April.
The garden got damage by the hurricane season but seems to have recovered quite well.
Miss Naida does not really have any tips but says it is important to water them.

Tech Talk: Virusses, Spyware and Spam. Oh My!
By Chris Howard
Spam usually appears as unwanted commercial e-mail, junk e-mail advertising, or
fairly distasteful product advertising. Looking at a current list of spam, one can see
e-mail that includes computer viruses (see
below), attempts to defraud its readers (offering money or clearing bad credit), offers
to sell prescription drugs, or information on
how to enlarge or reduce body parts.
For many of us, the spam messages are
greater than the ones we really care about.
A typical session these days is either reading or pressing the delete key. Now you’re
sitting there nodding your head and saying
‘but what can we do about it?” When you
receive unsolicited commercial e-mail, reply
to it with a message that states you’re not interested. Something along the lines of:
“My private e-mail is not your advertising medium. People who use them as such
abuse my time and resources. I will not do
business with you now, nor will I consider
other requests from you in the future. Please
remove this e-mail address from your junk
mail list immediately and do not contact me
again in the future.”
For the junk e-mail, your reply may be rejected with an “invalid email address”. For
those, you’ll have to work a little harder and
locate the real spammer. Their real address
will usually be somewhere within the body
of the message. If the email refers to a web
site, you can try sending your message to
root, postmaster, webmaster, or abuse at the
website. In other words, if the website is
ISPAM.com, you could send your message
to [email protected].
Fixing pesky computer viruses has been a
regular task of anyone using a computer
in the last 20 years. That’s about the same
length of time the personal computer (IBM
PC and Apple) has been around. Viruses
tend to grab our attention for a properly
engineered virus can
have an amazing effect on not only your
PC, but on the entire
Internet. For example, experts estimate
that the Mydoom
worm infected approximately a quarter-million computers in a single day in
January 2004.
So, what are these
things? Below is a
simple, brief description of some of the more popular viruses
floating around. At worse case, you’ll be
able to hold a cocktail conversation:
A virus is a small piece of software that piggybacks on real programs. For example, a
virus might attach itself to a program such
as a spreadsheet program. Each time the
spreadsheet program runs, the virus runs,
too, and it has the chance to reproduce (by
attaching to other programs) or damage
something else.
An e-mail virus moves around in e-mail
messages, and usually replicates itself by
automatically mailing itself to dozens of
people in the victim’s e-mail address book.
A worm is a small piece of software that
uses computer networks (internet included)
and security holes to replicate itself. A copy
of the worm scans the network for another
machine that has a specific security hole. It
copies itself to the new machine using the
security hole, and then starts replicating
from there, as well.
A Trojan horse is simply a computer program. The program claims to do one thing
(it may claim to be a game) but instead does
damage when you run it (it may erase your
hard disk). Trojan horses have no way to
replicate
automatically.
Regardless of the type
of virus, they aren’t
good. The author is
intentionally trying to
damage your computer, data, or become
famous. The easiest
way to prevent getting a virus is to not
download anything.
This includes email
attachments – especially, from someone
you don’t know. Viruses have become very
small and fit in just about any file. Even picture files (jpg, bmp, gif) can now have viruses in them. Worse, they are now present
on PDA’s (future Tech Talk article) and cell
phones.
If you simply can’t resist downloading
things and/or borrowing someone else’s CD
or DVD, there are several Anti-virus software companies out there. For a fee, McAfee or Norton provide excellent solutions.
For free, Avast or AVG do a great job for
the price.
Spyware, the last of the big 3 problems, is
generally not designed to damage your computer. Spyware is broadly defined as any
program that gets into your computer without permission, hides in the background,
and makes unwanted changes to your user
experience. Like a virus, this is another
broad category:
Malware is a general term for any program
that makes changes (does malicious or “bad”
things) without your express permission
Adware programs are designed specifically
to deliver un-requested advertising
Stealware programs are specific spyware
designed to capture clicks or Web-site refer-
ral credits. Why? If you ever click on an ad
from any site (say Yahoo), most likely the
original site will get paid for it by the destination site.
A Browser hijacker is a malicious program
that becomes deeply embedded in your
browser’s (Internet Explorer, Firefox) code
and core functionality. It’s what takes you
to places you didn’t ask for.
Most spyware runs in the background as
soon as you start your computer up. Running in the background means that you may
not even know it’s running. It can generate endless pop-up ads, reset your browser’s
home page to display an ad every time you
open it, or redirect your Web searches. Besides doing these things you don’t want, it is
using your computer memory and resources
to do it - this equals slower speeds.
If you’ve read this far, it’s time to put all this
together. Since 2003, the majority of viruses
and worms created were used to send email
spam or distribute more spyware. This is
how you get a virus and/or spam from people you know. For example, I download a
new, cool game that spies on my computer
and reports back to the creator all my information, sends everyone in my address book
a message on how to get free money, and
modifies my start up to show me ads on how
to get rid of spyware.
Unfortunately, a simply click of you mouse
on an un-reputable web site can get you
spyware. Even clicking on the “cancel” or
“close” button (always close with the red
X in the upper right hand corner) of a popup ad can start the process. Getting rid of
spyware requires yet more tools. The good
news is that the best ones are free. Spybot
and ad-aware lead the pact for getting rid of
most spyware problems.

Another succesfull beach clean up
By Jessica Chan
Earlier this month, visitors to Utila
proved yet again that they care about the
island enough to lend a hand in cleaning
it up. On March 9th, 40 volunteers gathered at Coco Café. These people had been
here for a few days, maybe a few weeks,
knowing little more than that the brightly
colored fliers posted around town spoke
of a beach cleanup.
Assembled and briefed, the first load of
volunteers was ready to head out to Big
Bight Beach located on the eastern side of
the island. Utila Dive Center generously
provided a truck to ferry people to and
from the site. Armed with rice sacks, the
volunteers spread out over the beach.
The hot sun overhead caused some worry
of sunburn and heat exhaustion, but the
volunteers were unfazed and cheerfully
set about the task at hand. A handful of
volunteers were singled out to pick up
only recyclable PET bottles. After just a
couple hours under the blazing sun, 66
sacks of trash and 20 bags of recyclable
plastics were removed from Big Bight
Beach.
“When we first arrived, there was so
much trash on the beach, I wasn’t sure we
could do much to help,” said one volunteer about the dismal state of the beach.
“It wasn’t until I saw the large pile of full
rice sacks grow and grow that I knew we
were making a real difference here.”
Shoes, styrofoam, netting, fishing line,
various plastic containers which once
held water, soda, dishwashing liquid, engine oil, or shampoo were among the most
common finds. In most cases, the garbage
isn’t put there directly by visitors of the
beaches. A lot of it is washed up from the
ocean. The volunteers were happy not
only to be taking trash off this particular
beach, but to be keeping trash out of the
ocean as well. Every piece removed was
one more that wouldn’t wash back out to
sea only to turn up on another beach.
Municipal garbage collectors were on
hand that afternoon, ready and waiting,
to cart off the sacks of trash to the dump.
The recyclable plastics were delivered to
Utila Watersports where they were sent on
to La Ceiba to be recycled.
The after party, held at Coco Loco, featured several rounds of a thirst quenchingly delicious rum punch. While Dave,
hailing from New Orleans, served up
a slow-cooked Jambalaya. Volunteers
stayed around to enjoy the sunset and
had lots of positive things to say about
the cleanup. “You can’t go diving every
day. This has been a great way to spend a
day off. Having enjoyed my time on Utila
so much, it was nice to give something
back. It’s great to know that tourists care
enough about this place to organize clean
ups themselves.”
The organizers of this month’s clean up
included Shine Adams, Sarah McGovern, Andy Farmer, and Jessica Chan. This
team really put their heads together in the
on going experiment, which is trying to
make a positive difference on the island.
Keep an eye out for more clean ups to
come. These clean ups are for everyone,
tourist and local alike. Please don’t hesitate to pitch in. The island, the reefs, the
wildlife here, need your help.
The clean up was made possible by contributions from the following businesses:

Ultralight Cafe
Utila Watersports
Camilla’s Bakery
Coco Café

Health precautions for Semana Santa
15
By Utila East Wind
These days Semana Santa is celebrated on Utila much like
Spring Break is in the States. The Island becomes a magnet for young people from all over Honduras and Central
America who just want to have fun on the beach and party
all night! It would be nice this year if Dr. John and Mark
from the Utila Community Clinic had a little time to enjoy
the party themselves so we are offering a few tips to keep
you healthier and safer through the holiday week.
DANGERS OF EXCESSIVE PARTYING
Getting sick: If you are suffering from vomiting or diarrhea
stop drinking alcohol, stay out of the sun, drink water and
rehydrating drinks. If nothing helps go see a doctor.
Dehydration: Drink water. You are more susceptible to heat
illnesses when you are dehydrated. Make sure that you drink
plenty of water, especially if you are out in the hot sun.
Heat cramps: Muscular pains and spasms are often due to
exertion (dancing in the sun!) This is often the first sign that
the body is having problems with heat. If you experience
cramps, sit down for a while and watch others dance. Make
sure you get some rest.
Heat exhaustion: this typically occurs when exercising or
getting overexerted in the heat and lots of body fluids are
lost through sweating. The blood flow to the skin increases
which means that the blood flow to vital organs decreases. This could lead to mild shock and if not treated it will
worsen. If the body temperature keeps rising it can lead to
heat stroke. If you think you might be suffering from heat
exhaustion make sure to rest and get out of the sun. Try to
cool down as much as possible.
Heat stroke: Is life threatening. The victims temperature
control system, which produces sweat to cool the body,
stops working and the body temperature rises, which can
be fatal.
*Alcohol and caffeine make you feel good briefly but make
the heats effect on your body worse, ESPECIALLY beer
which dehydrates the body.
Blacking out: This is a period of amnesia during which
the person is engaged in activity (e.g. Walking, talking) but
the brain is unable to form new memories for the events
leaving the person unable to recall events once they are no
longer intoxicated. In other words “DO YOU REMEMBER
WHAT YOU DID LAST NIGHT! “ to which many of us
have cringed because we have no idea what we did last
night!
Signs of Alcohol poisoning:
- Confusion, stupor, coma, can’t rouse them
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (less than 8 breaths a minute).
- Irregular breathing
- Bluish skin color or paleness
What to do:
- Know the danger signals
- Do not wait for all the symptoms
- Call the Doctor
- Don’t assume they will sleep it off
- Turn the person on their side incase they vomit
Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary actions
such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking). A fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop these
functions. It is common for someone who drinks excessive
volumes of alcohol to vomit, as alcohol is an irritant to the
stomach. A person’s blood alcohol concentration can con-
tinue to rise after they have passed out as the alcohol in the
stomach and intestines continues to enter the bloodstream.
DON’T ASSUME THEY WILL BE FINE SLEEPING IT
OFF.
Lack of ability to reason: At this time of year many injuries come from fights so avoid drinking if you are prone to
violence.
Engaging in unprotected sex: Yes, there are STILL all
kinds of infections out there so protect yourselves!
SEMANA SANTA TIPS
Drink water: It would be unrealistic to believe that everyone is going to stop drinking in case of dehydration so
please remember to keep drinking water in between alcoholic beverages.
Use sunscreen: Not only to stop sunburn but also to protect against more permanent sun damage. Check out www.
mnpoison.org and ‘The Dangers of safe sun’ by Dr. Michael
Fitzpatrick and Brid Hehir on www.spikedhealth.com (the
latter is highly recommended reading particularly for parents).
Sun: Try and stay out of direct sunlight between 10am2pm.
Friends: Look out for each other.
Plan ahead: Know what you are going to do if you can’t
find someone in your group or if one of you becomes ill.
TRY AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR EACH OTHER.
eres propenso a violencia.
Ve a www.mnpoison.org y Dangers of safe sun por
Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick y Brid Hehir en www.spikedhealth.
com.
enfermo.
*TRATEN DE RESPONSABILISARSE POR TODOS*

Borg to sell Wimbledon trophies
Yet another famous sportsman facing financial problems is having to
look at doing the unthinkable and
parting with his trophies to see of
the creditors.
5 times Wimbledon champion,
Bjorn Borg, is to sell his 5 Wimbledon trophies and two rackets,
including the one used to beat John
MacEnroe in 1980.
Borg retired at 26 and swapped the
world of tennis for that of business. A design company he set up
folded forcing him to sell his home
and his 2 divorces further whittled
away his finances.
Andre Agassi has said he is willing
to buy the items but has also lobbied the All England Club to buy
them and give Borg the chance to
buy them back.
Estimated sales price is up to
£200,000.

spite the gap the Red Devils have
only been beaten once more so
they can only look back ruefully
at the games that slipped away
from them.
The race for second place looks
to be between the two teams in
red who are separated by a mere
point but Manchester United
have 2 games in hand over their
Merseyside rivals. The blue half
of Liverpool winced as their team
failed to take advantage of Steven
Gerrard’s 18th minute dismissal.
The match ended 3 – 1 in Liverpools favour.
At the other end, Sunderland
are doomed as they prop up the
table with a mere 10 points from
the 90 on offer thus far in the
season. They have not even managed a single home victory with
their only successes coming on
the road. They are even further
behind second from last placed
Portsmouth than the Red devils
are from the boys from SW1.
However, things are finely poised
with any team from Fulham in
14th place to Portsmouth in 19th
in danger of dropping into the
Championship, formerly the Division 1.
Cricket
The celebratory hangovers were
still in evidence as just a few days
after the glory of Mumbai days,
England crashed to a 5 run defeat
against a Rajastan President’s XI.
Despite that loss the series leveling victory in the Third test in
Mumbai remains an outstanding
achievement. England Manage
Duncan Fletcher said “It’s a huge,
huge achievement. It’s close to
that Ashes win,” The victory came
despite the loss of 5 first choice
players including captain Michael
Vaughan.
These sentiments were echoed
by Australian opening batsman
Justin Langer: “To defeat India in
a Test match at home, particularly
in Mumbai, is a colossal effort.”
He admitted that the men in
the baggy green caps had taken
“smug” satisfaction at England’s
travails in Pakistan – both Test
and One Days Series were lost to
the hosts - and the loss in Mohali
to India in the second Test.
England (400 and 191) beat India
(279 and 100) away for the first
time in 21 years by 212 runs.
India crashed from from 75 – 3 to
100 all out with 37 year old Shaun
Udal taking 4 -14. Stand in skipper and man of both the match
and the series Andrew Flintoff
took 3 – 14 and hit a brace of half
centuries.
An Andrew Strauss ton on the
first day, a solid Owais Shah score
of 88 and sterling work by the
bowlers (James Anderson 4 -40
and wicketkeeper Geraint James
(5 catches) in India’s reply gave
England the luxury a first innings
lead of 152. Sachin Tendulkar,
whose 34 in the second innings
was his highest score in the series,
could only manage a solitary
run before being removed by
Anderson.
The victory has whetted the
appetite for the forthcoming
Ashes campaign when Australia
host England Down Under this
November in a five Test Series.
Australia were stunned by England last summer when they lost
an Ashes series for the first time
in 18 years. Match tickets have
been sold out for months as Australia eagerly await the arrival of
the Barmy Army. The Aussies will
attempt to wrest the Ashes back
whilst the holders seek to prove
that the victory in England was
not a flash in the pan. The win in
Mumbai suggests that England’s
improvements are genuine and
that their second place in the ICC
rankings are merited.
