CPR - You never know when you will need it. While shopping in Walmart recently, Katelyn Jackson, HCBS Asst. at Spring Hills Apts., chose to give CPR to a 3-year old boy who had stopped breathing. Using her CPR skills, she was able to bring him back. Congratulations Katelyn; we are all proud of you. This is a great opportunity to express our thanks and appreciation to all MSS CPR/ First Aid instructors. You do a wonderful service to our community as well as our members and staff. Diversity Corner Diversity also includes a wide variety of differences that we normally don’t think about, like work history, parental status, educational background, geographic location and much more. Did you know? Intellectual disability occurs in all races and cultures. Overall, males are more likely to be diagnosed with both mild and severe forms of intellectual disability than are females. The Importance of Exercise Submitted by on-site Mercy Nurse, Marilyn West, R.N. Becoming more active does not mean you need to go to the gym. You can be active and exercise anywhere! Exercise is good for our bodies and mind. Exercise benefits include: 1. Control weight. Exercise helps with the energy balance process, which is calories consumed verse calories expended through exercise. Basically, you burn more calories when you exercise which helps with weight loss. 2. Helps prevent and improve health conditions. Exercise can help prevent/improve heart disease, blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, and many more health conditions. 3. Improves mood and boosts energy. Exercise increases your endorphins which can help put you in a better mood and have more energy to take on your day. 4. Helps manage and reduce stress. Endorphins produced during exercise can also help you reduce stress by improving mood, self-esteem, and decrease overall tension. After exercise you tend to feel better about things and are able to cope with stress more easily. 5. Helps your sleep. Exercise can help you fall asleep faster at night and sleep better at night. However exercising too close to bedtime can cause you sleeping problems if your energy level is too high after exercise. Make sure to watch how late you exercise. 6. It is fun and great social activity. Exercise can be done anywhere no matter what the weather or where you are at. You want to do something you enjoy and makes you feel happy. Exercise is also a great way to be social with friends and/or family. Finding a workout buddy can be a great motivator. Exercise can be broken into cardio and strength training. Both are important to practice. The following are ACSM's recommendations: Cardio: ACSM recommends exercising for 150 minutes of moderate intensity every week. This can be broken down into 30 minutes 5 days a week or even into smaller segments if needed as long as you are doing at least 10 minute intervals and increasing your heartrate. If you are unable to meet these recommendations you can still benefit from exercise. Little is better than nothing. Examples of cardio include: running, walking, biking, swimming, tennis, Zumba, etc. Strength: ACSM recommends strength training a minimum of 2 days a week and should be focused on training major muscle groups. Each exercise should be performed 2-3 sets with each set being 12-15 repetitions. Make sure to rest between set for at least 30-60 seconds. When selecting weights you want the last few reps to be challenging and near muscle fatigue. It is also important to watch your posture/form. Types of strength training include: body weight exercises, free weights, resistance bands, weight machines, TRX.
