A one man show
CITY: LIFESTYLE JO NE SING FOR G L AM O U R A one man show New wave disco dominatrix — big shoulders, dramatic eyes and in-your-face attitude — is this fall’s nightclubbing look The “Queen of Gay Discos” could only wear skirts and dresses growing up; she rebelled by going topless at Studio 54 with a flower tucked behind an ear. (Warhol loved her.) Jeremy Scott x Adidas Originals three-quarter fleece sequin pants, $249.99. Adidas Originals (389 Queen W., 416-9155536, www.adidas.ca). INSPIRATION POINT by Rea McNamara INS P IRATIO N: In 1985, Grace Jones — who challenged prejudice with boxing gloves and stilettos — performed at Larry Levan’s New York “club church” Paradise Garage. The show melded art, fashion and music: artist Keith Haring painted Masai white lines on Jones’ nude body, which was later topped by the jungle fever of a raffia skirt and a coiled-iron bra (a Josephine Baker reference). Aren’t you disappointed that Ms Jones skipped Toronto on her recent Hurricane tour? Don’t worry, you can still pull up to the bumper at DJs Andy Capp and Todd-Rod Skimmins’ monthly Bang The Party — every flyer’s a Jones homage — happening Aug. 8 with special guest David Shaw at The Boat (158 Augusta, 416-593-9218). Admission is $5. “I like hard things,” states Jones of her classic bigshouldered androgyne look. “I like soft things. I go feminine, I go masculine. I change roles in life. I am both.” Pink Cobra F/W 09 detach vest, $395. Carte Blanche (758 Queen W., 416532-0347, www. shopcarteblanche.ca). URBAN ETIQU ET T E Golf umbrellas are not for city sidewalks, where they jostle and crowd. Save your oversized canopy for the fairway. 12 E Y E W E E K LY | A U G U S T 6 , 2 0 0 9 Go soft in lined lids and pouty lips; go hard with Keith Haring body graffiti. (Both accessorize metal armour well.) Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes, $19. Sephora (131 Bloor W., 416513-1100, www.sephora. com). Vintage earrings, $39. Carte Blanche. C HE A P T HR IL L S It’s GO time by Sarah Nicole Prickett Did you know there’s a weekend GO Train to Niagara Falls? I didn’t either, until relatives in those pretty parts guilted me for never visiting. “You know, it’s really very easy,” emails my aunt in admonishing tones; right she is. It’s inexpensive, too: a return trip (departing four times daily on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays) will run you a reasonable $31.80. Bring a date and your bikes (they’re allowed on GO Transit when it isn’t rush hour) and spin around the tourist town in your own rom-com montage — sharing homemade ice cream, taking pictures of people taking pictures and catching monarch butterflies. Also cheap, and probably more thrilling: GO passengers who purchase a Niagara Falls Transit day pass can take a shuttle straight from the train station to Fallsview Casino — and they’ll reimburse you for the $6 pass. And then, who needs an overpriced, under-designed chain hotel, when you can spend all night (and all your savings) at the nickel slots? (Obviously, in the spirit of frugality, I can’t recommend you play anything higher.) Survive on liquid-cocaine shots and barbecued corn nuts until the morning, when you can buy an Egg McMuffin at the station and hop on the 8:50am train back to the T-dot. » Visit eyeweekly.com/cheapthrills for Sarah Nicole Prickett’s daily tips on getting the most bang from your budget.
