Aroostook Heritage
The Culture
of the
County
Native
American Tribes
Aroostook County is home to two federally recognized Native
American tribes, the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and Houlton Band
of Maliseets. The Micmac tribal government is located in Presque
Isle while the Maliseets are located in Houlton respectively. Both
tribes display their heritage through their crafts, museums, local farms
and regional markets. Visit maliseets.com or micmac-nsn.gov
French
Acadians
The first settlers to come to this region, the French Acadians settled
on the banks of the St. John River near today’s Madawaska. Maine
Acadians possess a strong sense of who they are. They express what it
means to be a Maine Acadian in diverse ways, depending on the situation
and whether they are acting as individuals, families, communities,
organizations, or in other groups. Contemporary Maine Acadians use at
least three terms to name their ethnicity. “French” is widely used for selfidentification and to differentiate themselves from other cultural groups.
Irish
& Scotch Irish
Beginning in the early 1700s, the Irish and Scotch Irish began
immigrating to North America establishing some of their first permanent
settlements in the State of Maine. In fact, it was these people who
first introduced the practice of farming potatoes to the state, a major
economic driver for Aroostook County for well over a century.
As settlers made their way to Aroostook County, many of them
were Irish and Scotch Irish. Coming from the settlements in
Southern Maine and the Maritime Provinces in Canada, these
hearty individuals brought their culture and flair to the region. A
great example of this is the town of Allagash, with its unique Irish/
Scotch culture imbedded in the French dominated St. John Valley.
Swedish
Colony
About 1869, Maine’s state immigration commissioner traveled to
Sweden and recruited 51 adventurous immigrants to start a new life in
the virgin forests of northern Maine. The area soon became known as
New Sweden. Thanks in large measure to shear persistence, ingenuity
and strength of these early pioneers, the colony prospered and grew into
the neighboring townships of Westmanland, Stockholm and Woodland.
This Swedish heritage remains firmly imbedded in this unique area
of Aroostook and many remnants of this early colony remain visible
today. The Swedish traditions are still upheld throughout the year
with such festivals like Saint Lucia in December and Midsommer in
June. Traditional Smorgasbords are very popular with people gathering
and sharing wonderful foods. Visit maineswedishcolony.info

Snowmobile Trails
of
Aroostook County
2,300 miles of woodsy twisters, lake crossings, high
bridges and silky smooth rail-trail ripping. That’s what
makes Aroostook County’s snowmobile trails unique.
When you combine the wide open, two-lane field
crossings with the “way out there” big woods loop
west of Allagash and add a healthy dose of the best
snow in the eastern United States, you have the perfect
recipe for a lifetime of snowmobiling memories.
Some trails in Aroostook are converted railroad beds,
while others may traverse a power line up and over large
rolling hills that capture the picturesque beauty of the
landscape. Summer roads, abandoned logging roads and
other club trails lead the snowmobiler to spectacular
sites of snow-laden spruce maple and birch forests. You
can snowmobile over the crest of a hill and look out
at the variety of terrain “The County” has to offer.
Aroostook County averages more than 115
inches of snowfall each year. Starting sometime in
December, the snow in Aroostook keeps coming
for five long months, ensuring great trail riding
well into March and sometimes even April.
More than 40 well-organized and dedicated
snowmobile clubs are firmly established in most
communities across the region and an extensive
network of trails has emerged thanks to the
cooperation of hundreds of generous landowners.
T r av e l T i p s
One factor to consider when trying to
decide on a snowmobiling destination is
density. Areas that have a limited trail
system and high user numbers tend to
have traffic-related issues. Trails in those
areas get beaten up. Aroostook County
has an incredibly diverse and extensive
system, coupled with comparatively
low usage allowing the trails to stay in
better condition longer. This means
you can ride farther with less fatigue.
That’s a winning combination.
The Northeast Snowmobile Trail (NEST). the
international Interconnecting Trail System (ITS) and
a multitude of local club trails provide snowmobilers
with a variety of scenic rides, whether it be a long loop
ride, a short picturesque jaunt or a trip through the
entire county. Club members spend countless hours
maintaining the trails system in the summer and fall
months, from building bridges to cutting brush and
updating signage. ln the winter months, committed
volunteers use the best available grooming technology
to mold the snow into the best trails around. There’s
access to additional Maine trails to the south and west as
well as Canadian trails in New Brunswick and Quebec.
There are numerous other events, regular club ride-ins
and cookouts. Aroostook has phenomenal accessibility
via snowmobile to gas, food, lodging, service and parts.
Whether you are looking for candlelight dining, oldfashioned home cooking or a night of music and dancing,
area businesses offer a variety of entertainment options
and most have direct trail access. There are also several
businesses which provide snowmobile rentals and
clothing, as well as experienced guides and completely
outfitted tours. Our people take great pride in the
snowmobiling infrastructure. For more information
about snowmobiling, go to visitaroostook.com.

Boaters of every type and anglers of every
stripe are attracted to the vast waterways of
Aroostook County. Whether your preference is
this paddler’s paradise via canoe or kayak, or a
quiet lake in a flat-bottomed fishing boat, the
opportunities to get on the water in Aroostook
are boundless. And, you may never see another
soul at all. In fact, in northern Aroostook, the
upper St. John River flows for 130 miles without
ever passing a single settlement. In the west,
floaters and boaters find the Allagash Wilderness
Waterway, stretching more than 90 miles in a
series of lakes and rivers. In the central part
of the county is the popular Aroostook River,
which flows through majestic forests and past
picturesque farmlands. In the Crown of Maine,
you’re never far from water or your next grand
outdoor adventure.

travel from around the globe to see our massive moose, listen to the melancholy cry of
loons on our lakes, view bald eagles, and catch a glimpse of black bear, whitetail deer,
fox and coyote. And birders revel in identifying more than 65 varieties of song birds,
woodpeckers, falcons and waterfowl that dot our woodlands, meadows and ponds.
Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge
The refuge offers about 6 miles of trails that wind through various habitats found on
the refuge, wetlands, spruce-fir and northern hardwood forests. The refuge maintains
inventories for nesting neotropical, breeding and grassland nesting birds, frogs and
toads, vernal pools, and dragonflies and damselflies. The best time to see moose, black
bear, mink, martin, fisher and up to twenty species of warbler is Mid-May through June
and September. For more information, the refuge is located in Limestone at the Loring
Commerce Center,call 328-4634.

Hunting in The County
24 Water Street
Caribou, Maine
T h e S t r o n g . T h e B r av e . T h e A r o o s t o o k H u n t e r .
Avid hunters head to Aroostook for massive moose, ten-point bucks and elusive black bear and
an abundance of waterfowl. Many of the region’s residents have held a tradition of hunting game
species for generations, lured by abundant wildlife, thousands of acres of agricultural land and
millions of acres of forest.
Most recently, wild turkeys have made a comeback in Maine, and wild turkeys are making their
way into Central and Northern Aroostook County. Moose are hunted in northern Maine each fall in
a split-season hunt, with licenses available on a permit lottery basis, which are drawn in the spring
of the year. Weighing as much as 1,000 pounds and often sporting racks exceeding 60 inches, moose
are hunted in deep woods and on the border between forest and farm. Recently, hunters have had a
success rate exceeding 90%, attesting to the animal’s strong population in Aroostook.
Note:
Dates vary for hunting different species. Special licences may be required. Hunter orange clothing is
ONLY required when hunting during the firearms hunting season on deer, the muzzle-loading season
on deer, or within an open moose hunting district during moose hunting season.

Fishing in The County
Warm Weather
or
Cold.
Aroostook County contains countless ponds and miles
of free flowing water that contain wild and/or native brook
trout. The warm water anglers will find smallmouth bass
plentiful in East Grand Lake as well as Mattawamkeag Lake
and Pleasant Pond and several other lakes in southern and
Central Aroostook. Cold water fishery anglers will find some
of the best salmon and trout fishing available in the Eastern
U.S. For the angler looking for a new and exciting experience,
the St. John River and Tributaries offer the only wild muskie
fishery in the Eastern U.S. Long Lake, part of the Fish River
Chain of Lakes, was voted one of the top 10 “must fish
destinations for landlocked salmon” by a national magazine
in 2007. Deboullie Pond gave up the new State Record Blue
Back Trout (Land Locked Artic Char) in 2008.
The Fish River Chain
of
Lakes
The Fish River Chain of Lakes management region located in the
“Crown of Maine” has long been famous for traditional coldwater species.
The Fish River Lakes management region is 1 1/3 the size of the state
of Connecticut. Prior planning should include maps showing all of the
updated road systems particularly in the North Maine Woods, Inc. area
west of Ashland. Summer visitors to this vast area of private woodlands
must pass through a North Maine Woods gate. Information on fee
schedules may be obtained by calling their Ashland office at:
207-435-6213. These gates do not operate in the winter fishing season.
Speaking of the winter season, one should consider the Fish River Lakes
management region for their ice fishing destination. Snow and ice comes
early and stays late in this part of the state. Numerous snowmobile trails
afford excellent opportunity to access lakes for fishing trips, or, if the fish
aren’t biting, to enjoy the beautiful scenery in northern Maine.
Anglers are encouraged to contact the regional fisheries biologists at (207) 435-3231 for additional information on the lakes in this region.

Motorcycling
in Aroostook County
Aroostook is the ideal destination to tour some of the best scenic and
uncrowded roads in Maine and to check yourself in at one of the four corners
of the United States. Located in downtown Madawaska, the Four Corners
Park was created to honor those hearty souls who saddle their motorcycles
for a grueling cross-country trek to the outermost reaches of the continental
United States. As the Southern California Motorcycle Association’s primary
challenge to long-distance bikers, the Four Corners Tour requires each
candidate to travel by motorcycle to the four corners of the U.S in 21 days
or less with Madawaska representing the most northeastern aspect (while
Blaine in Washington, San Ysidro in California and Key West in Florida
serve as the other three points--though none other with benefit of a park.)

Maine Solar System Model
Ever wanted to cruise the solar system? A visit along Route
1 in Aroostook County enables you to do just that. And
soon you will be able to venture further into the galaxy by
visiting locations in New Brunswick and Quebec to make
it the very first international model on record.
The Maine Solar System Model is maintained by the
University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Northern Maine
Museum of Science and was formally dedicated on
June 14, 2003. Built on a scale of one mile equal to
93 million miles (the distance from the Earth to the
sun, also known as an astronomical unit), each of the
planet replicas is built to scale and spaced alongside
U.S. Route 1 at appropriate distances. Most of the
model planets are mounted outdoors on poles. The
system stretches from Topsfield to Presque Isle and now
includes the sun, nine planets, seven moons and three
dwarf planets. The Sun is located inside Folsom-Pullen
Hall at UMPI with Pluto located inside the Houlton
Visitor Center.
The expansion is being done to coincide with the 2014
World Acadian Congress, with two dwarf planets or
Kuiper belt objects each in the Acadian areas of Maine,
New Brunswick and Quebec. The World Acadian
Congress will be staged in northern Maine, northwestern
New Brunswick and the Temiscouata region of Quebec
from Aug. 8 to 24, 2014.
At the time of the formal dedication of the expanded
model during the World Acadian Congress, the name
will be changed to the International Solar System Model.

Agriculture
of Aroostook County
Ten percent of Aroostook County is tillable farmland and when you consider that the County is larger
than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined, you understand how important agriculture is to the
region. The primary crop continues to be the potato, however broccoli, canola and grains are all planted
in large amounts annually, resulting in some of the most beautiful patchwork landscapes you will ever see.
If you see someone working a farm stop and say “Hi,” you won’t believe how friendly the people are.
In the fall you can see some fields being harvested by the most modern equipment available and other
fields harvested using horse drawn equipment. Can you imagine a place that the public school systems
close each fall so the children can work in the potato harvest? You don’t have to, it happens right here.

Aroostook State Park is an ideal starting point for discovering all of
Aroostook County, including the North Maine Woods, the Allagash
Wilderness Waterway and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick
and Quebec. The park’s accessible lakeside picnic area provides
tables, charcoal grills and a swimming area without lifeguards.
The boat launch area offers ample space for parking, docking and
getting close to those “big brook trout.” Canoes and paddleboats
can be rented at the control station. For more information, contact

AROOSTOOK STATE PARK
The park established in 1939 from local
citizens who donated 100 acres of land to
the State of Maine. Today the park totals
nearly 800 acres thanks to subsequent
donations and purchases. The park includes
both Quaggy Jo Mountain and Echo Lake,
which offers great opportunities to enjoy
hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, kayaking
or just some well-needed rest and relaxation
while you camp in the shadows of Quaggy
Jo Mountain. The campground offers 30
sites, shower house, kitchen shelter and
organized group camping areas. The name
Quaggy Jo is the shortened form of its
Indian name Qua Qua Jo, which translates
to “twin peaked.” The park’s lush forest,
healthy lake and unique geology provide
wonderful opportunities for the young and
young at heart to study environmental
sciences and history in a truly amazing
classroom. In the winter time, the park
offers some of Aroostook County’s finest
classical cross country skiing, snowshoeing
and winter camping. The 15 miles of skiing
trails and 5 miles of snowshoe trails make
their way through picturesque northern
Maine’s white winter wonderland.
