Africa: Learn, Serve, Immerse
In this Global Family Travels tour you will be surrounded by the splendour of Africa's Game Parks, be
immersed in the amazing history and customs of South Africa, encounter the majestic lions of Africa upclose in Zimbabwe and be awed by the pristine wetlands and wildlife of the Chobe National Park in
Botswana.
The Learn, Serve, Immerse Africa components of this tour offer several incredible opportunities for you
and your family to see the natural beauty of Africa, get to know ancient tribal customs, see first-hand the
effects of apartheid on the country, and witness the power of animals in the wild and the efforts to preserve
their livelihood.
LEARN:
At Global Family Travels we believe that the most powerful way to learn is through first-hand experience.
We let the country and its people be your teachers and supplement your experiences with reading lists,
informal discussions, and a pre-trip orientation which includes information on the culture and history of
your host country, helpful words and phrases, and cultural “do’s and don’ts”.
Learning themes unique to this tour include:





The effects of Apartheid through the first-hand experiences of the people of District Six
The local lifestyle of rural communities in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe
Cape Town’s best-known open markets featuring fair trade craftspeople
A visit to Robben Island, including dinner with an ex-prison warden who guarded Nelson Mandela
A lion rehabilitation program in Zimbabwe’s Antelope Park
SERVE
Participants will have the opportunity to be positive role models by working with orphaned children in the
community. Activities include mentoring, one-on-one tutoring, and helping them to feel safe and
comfortable in their new home environment. We will also support local partners to provide services,
workshops, and after-school programs. Another highlight of this tour is working with the lion
rehabilitation program in Lion Rehabilitation Program in Zimbabwe’s Antelope Park.

up close and personal to the animals.
A note: Our philosophy at Global Family Travel’s is to let the country be your guide. We will do all we can
to offer you everything that is on the schedule. However, should an unexpected event arise, we suggest

historic buildings housing coffee shops, art museums and galleries.
Robben Island Prison
This notorious prison is located on an island seven kilometres off the coast of Cape Town in Table Bay. It is where
Africa’s political prisoners were kept during the colonial and Apartheid years of South Africa and where Nelson
Mandela, former President of South Africa, was imprisoned on Robben Island for 18 of the 27 years he was behind

Chapman's Peak
Chapman’s Peak Drive winds its way between Noordhoek and Hout Bay. Situated on the Atlantic Coast, at the southwestern tip of South Africa, it is one of the most spectacular marine drives anywhere in the world. The 9km route,
with its 114 curves, skirts the rocky coastline of Chapman's Peak. The drive offers stunning 180° views with many
areas along the route where you can stop and take in the scenery or sit down for a relaxing picnic.
Cape Point Nature Reserve
Cape Point lies at the south-western tip of Africa and offers great views, a restaurant and a funicular couple with
zebras, baboons, deserted beaches and plenty of fynbos to make this one of the Cape’s must see destinations.
Cape Point Ostrich Farm
The "Cape Point Ostrich Farm" is a productive breeding farm. A family-run business which in its existing form, was
acknowledged in 1996. The 65 ha farm is owned and supervised by Angelika and Dr. Ernst Coelle. Being a breeding
farm, everything is done to comfort and accommodate 40 Ostrich pairs. They live in 40 camps and ensure that there
are always plenty of eggs to incubate. Guided and very detailed tours are offered in German, English and French. On
the tours throughout the farm, you'll be familiarised with the life cycle of our ostriches.
Global Family Travels ~ www.globalfamilytravels.com ~ [email protected] ~ 206-890-3442
P a g e | 10
We tell you more about the life of the ostriches, all the way from the egg right up to the adult ostrich. During the
breeding season, quite often you will be able to experience the hatching of an ostrich chick. Our facilities can
accommodate up to 800 birds.
Boulders Beach
Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents and large
waves - but please always take care. It is a rare pleasure to swim with the penguins but don't touch or feed them.
They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no
qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.
Kalk Bay
Kalk Bay is renowned for its little working fisherman's harbour, quaint shops on the Main Road and its restaurants.

South Africa’s most famous wine region, Stellenbosch was earmarked as a prime area for viticulture in the late 17th
century, when the Cape’s first governor, Simon van der Stel, recognised the potential of the region’s unique terroir.
Three centuries later, in 1971, Stellenbosch was also the first area to establish a designated wine route and today, it
is still considered the country’s leading wine-producing district.
Stellenbosch Wine Route
Stellenbosch is South Africa's premiere wine producing area and is packed with cellars offering excellent wines, great
meals and breathtakingly vistas. A visit to one of the renowned Wine Farms on this route will give you the
opportunity to taste some of these wines, as well as some cheese. Younger visitors will only participate in the cheese
tasting.
Franschhoek
A quaint wine farming town with a quiet but buzzing main road which is home to 3 of the country's top 10
restaurants. Here you will enjoy a chocolate tasting, paired with wine on one of its famous wine farms.

Day 9:
Antelope Park, Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe
A nation of spectacular natural beauty, friendly people and rich culture, Zimbabwe’s status as one of Africa’s leading
safari destinations was dampened for years by its political instability. But now that the country is transcending its
strife and returning to a state of equilibrium, it is once again emerging as one of the more popular vacation
destinations of the continent. Victoria Falls – known to locals as ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ – is one of the seven
natural wonders of the world and the sheer power of this massive body of water plunging into the Zambezi Gorge is
awe-inspiring and unforgettable. Lake Kariba, with its game-rich shores and islands, is an idyllic safari spot featuring
mind-blowing sunsets; Hwange National Park is known for its huge herds of elephants; and a kayak trip down the
Zambezi through the Mana Pools National Park will appeal to the intrepid traveller, providing close encounters with
crocodiles, hippos and a host of other wildlife.
Overnight: Antelope Park
Known as one of Southern Africa’s Most Intriguing Destinations, and voted second runner up in the 2012 AZTA
Awards “Zimbabwe’s Best Safari Camp,” Antelope Park is a not-to-be-missed location on your Zimbabwe travel
itinerary!
Antelope Park is famous for Animal Planet’s popular documentary series “Roaring with Pride” and ITV’s “Lion
Country.” Home to the ALERT lion rehabilitation programme, a non-profit organization, dedicated to the facilitation
and promotion of sound conservation and management plans for the African Lion.
Set in over 3000 acres of open savannah grassland, Antelope Park is a stunning and unique game reserve. Walk with
lions, ride through the wilderness on elephant or horseback, view the abundance of awesome wildlife and canoe on
the tranquil lake - we offer an array of exclusive activities. All this coupled with accommodation to suit any budget,
delicious home-cooked meals available, and warm Zimbabwean hospitality, who wouldn't want to visit!

Tour of Breeding Program at Antelope Park
The group will get to take a tour of the project, while experiencing some of the daily routine as explained below.
Activities are weather dependent and schedules are provided on arrival day. The below will give guests an idea of
the activities at the breeding program, and they will experience elements of this during their visit.
Antelope Park is home to the ground-breaking African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild
Programme. The programme involves vital research of lion behaviour and with hands-on work with lions, preparing
them for their release into the wild.
In an attempt to offset the rapid decline of lion populations, the ALERT programme, along with partners, have
instigated a 4-stage Lion Rehabilitation Programme that aims to release cubs of captive bred lions into appropriate
national parks and reserves across Africa as self-sustaining wild animals.
Since the launch of the Hands-on Lion Conservation Volunteer Project at Antelope Park, we have made amazing
progress with the help of dedicated staff, persistent visionaries, and passionate international volunteers. We have
recently expanded the rehabilitation programme across 2 more countries, and now have a total of three lion
conservation projects working hard to raise captive-bred lion cubs as wild-born offspring.
There are a variety of activities with regards to the Lion Project including; walk lions in the wild to familiarize them
with their natural environment, cub sits, provide water for the lions, enclosure maintenance, behaviour enrichment
for the lions, boundary patrols, meat preparation, snare sweeping and bush walks.
Global Family Travels ~ www.globalfamilytravels.com ~ [email protected] ~ 206-890-3442
P a g e | 13
Lion Rehabilitation
Long-term volunteers spend time working with the lions in the wild each day to familiarize them with their natural
environment. The lions need to adapt to, learn from, understand, observe, feel and smell the wild. Since the start of
this intensive lion walking programme, we have noted a marked increase in the lion’s awareness of its natural
surroundings, as well as an improvement in hunting skills. The larger cubs are now able to take down smaller wildlife
whilst out on walks.
These abilities are being improved each day under the supervision of trained guides and handlers, as well as
volunteers. Alongside the walks you will be involved in the care of the animals which overnight in enclosures. They
need feeding, cleaning, and occasionally will need veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health.

Day 11:
Miombo Safari Camp, Hwange National Park
Hwange National Park
Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s biggest reserve, home to a profusion of wildlife, including giraffe, lion, zebra
and approximately 40,000 elephants. It provides sanctuary for all the country’s endangered species, including a
population of wild dogs thought to be among the most sizeable surviving groups on the continent. Terrain ranges
from desert dunes and savannah lands, to rocky outcrops and sparse forests, and visitors have the choice of game
drives, guided walks or horseback safaris as a means of experiencing the park and its creatures.
Overnight: Miombo Safari Camp
Miombo Safari Camp bordering Hwange National Park is ideally situated for day safaris into the national park. Set in
verdant Miombo woodland with our own waterhole providing you with the ultimate game viewing and birding
experience at your doorstep.

Painted Dog Conservation Project
Painted Dogs, also known as African Wild Dogs, are unique to Africa and they are among this continent's most
endangered species. It is estimated that a mere 3,000 - 5,000 remain. The Painted Dog population in Zimbabwe is
one of the last strongholds of the species and we are committed to their conservation. Our conservation methods
and our work with the local communities are beginning to have a positive effect on the outlook of the Painted Dog
species.
Day 12:
Lokuthula Lodges, Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls
One of the original natural wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls is a World Heritage Site and an extremely popular
tourism attraction. Known locally as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ this spectacle is accessible from both Zambia and
Zimbabwe and it is an ideal place to combine a game viewing and water sports. There is excellent fishing, a terrifying
bungee jump and arguably the best commercial white water rafting in the world.
Overnight: Lokuthula Lodges
Lokuthula means 'Place of Peace’ in the local siNdebele tongue - an apt name for these well-appointed lodges set in
tranquil, indigenous gardens where elephant roam and warthogs kneel to mow the lush lawns! This luxurious selfcatering resort consists of 37 rustic thatched lodges within the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge resort estate. Lokuthula
borders the unspoilt African bush of the Zambezi National Park and a nearby waterhole attracts a passage of wildlife,
including buffalo, elephant, hyena and a variety of plains game.

lions that prey on them.
