The Learn, Serve, Immerse Africa components of this tour offer several incredible opportunities for you and your family to see the natural beauty of Africa, get to know ancient tribal customs, see first-hand the effects of apartheid on the country, and witness the power of animals in the wild and the efforts to preserve their livelihood. We let the country and its people be your teachers and supplement your experiences with reading lists, informal discussions, and a pre-trip orientation which includes information on the culture and history of your host country, helpful words and phrases, and cultural “do’s and don’ts”. Learning themes unique to this tour include: The effects of Apartheid through the first-hand experiences of the people of District Six The local lifestyle of rural communities in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe Cape Town’s best-known open markets featuring fair trade craftspeople A visit to Robben Island, including dinner with an ex-prison warden who guarded Nelson Mandela A lion rehabilitation program in Zimbabwe’s Antelope Park SERVE Participants will have the opportunity to be positive role models by working with orphaned children in the community. Activities include mentoring, one-on-one tutoring, and helping them to feel safe and comfortable in their new home environment. We will also support local partners to provide services, workshops, and after-school programs. Another highlight of this tour is working with the lion rehabilitation program in Lion Rehabilitation Program in Zimbabwe’s Antelope Park. The drive offers stunning 180° views with many areas along the route where you can stop and take in the scenery or sit down for a relaxing picnic. Cape Point Nature Reserve Cape Point lies at the south-western tip of Africa and offers great views, a restaurant and a funicular couple with zebras, baboons, deserted beaches and plenty of fynbos to make this one of the Cape’s must see destinations. The 65 ha farm is owned and supervised by Angelika and Dr. Ernst Coelle. Being a breeding farm, everything is done to comfort and accommodate 40 Ostrich pairs. They live in 40 camps and ensure that there are always plenty of eggs to incubate. Guided and very detailed tours are offered in German, English and French. On the tours throughout the farm, you'll be familiarised with the life cycle of our ostriches. Global Family Travels ~ www.globalfamilytravels.com ~ [email protected] ~ 206-890-3442 P a g e | 10 We tell you more about the life of the ostriches, all the way from the egg right up to the adult ostrich. During the breeding season, quite often you will be able to experience the hatching of an ostrich chick. Our facilities can accommodate up to 800 birds. Boulders Beach Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents and large waves - but please always take care. It is a rare pleasure to swim with the penguins but don't touch or feed them. Victoria Falls – known to locals as ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ – is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and the sheer power of this massive body of water plunging into the Zambezi Gorge is awe-inspiring and unforgettable. Lake Kariba, with its game-rich shores and islands, is an idyllic safari spot featuring mind-blowing sunsets; Hwange National Park is known for its huge herds of elephants; and a kayak trip down the Zambezi through the Mana Pools National Park will appeal to the intrepid traveller, providing close encounters with crocodiles, hippos and a host of other wildlife. The below will give guests an idea of the activities at the breeding program, and they will experience elements of this during their visit. Antelope Park is home to the ground-breaking African Lion Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Programme. The programme involves vital research of lion behaviour and with hands-on work with lions, preparing them for their release into the wild. In an attempt to offset the rapid decline of lion populations, the ALERT programme, along with partners, have instigated a 4-stage Lion Rehabilitation Programme that aims to release cubs of captive bred lions into appropriate national parks and reserves across Africa as self-sustaining wild animals. Since the launch of the Hands-on Lion Conservation Volunteer Project at Antelope Park, we have made amazing progress with the help of dedicated staff, persistent visionaries, and passionate international volunteers. We have recently expanded the rehabilitation programme across 2 more countries, and now have a total of three lion conservation projects working hard to raise captive-bred lion cubs as wild-born offspring. There are a variety of activities with regards to the Lion Project including; walk lions in the wild to familiarize them with their natural environment, cub sits, provide water for the lions, enclosure maintenance, behaviour enrichment for the lions, boundary patrols, meat preparation, snare sweeping and bush walks. Global Family Travels ~ www.globalfamilytravels.com ~ [email protected] ~ 206-890-3442 P a g e | 13 Lion Rehabilitation Long-term volunteers spend time working with the lions in the wild each day to familiarize them with their natural environment. The lions need to adapt to, learn from, understand, observe, feel and smell the wild. Since the start of this intensive lion walking programme, we have noted a marked increase in the lion’s awareness of its natural surroundings, as well as an improvement in hunting skills. The larger cubs are now able to take down smaller wildlife whilst out on walks. These abilities are being improved each day under the supervision of trained guides and handlers, as well as volunteers. Alongside the walks you will be involved in the care of the animals which overnight in enclosures. They need feeding, cleaning, and occasionally will need veterinary care to ensure that they are kept in the best of health.
