Fall signals the beginning of a new school year, t practices, small
Pastor: Cheryl Somers Somers-Ingersol - [email protected] September 2016 St. Mark's United Methodist Saturday Worship 5:00 p.m. Chapel Sunday Worship 9:30 a.m. Sanctuary Sunday School 10:40 a.m. Various Fall signals the beginning of a new school year, the restart of choir/bell practices, small groups, preschool, the fall festival ((TBA) -- and, yes, all the work involved in getting ready for Charge Conference (i.e. the 2017 budget and the Lay-Personnel report, (formerly known as the 'Nominating Committee'). One of the joys of a church the size of St. Marks is the tremendous involvement of the lay people. One of the concerns of a church the size of St. Marks is that it takes everyone to have the kinds and quality of ministries we'd like to have. As the Lay Personnel Committee starts their work in September, please prayerfully consider your gifts and how you can serve. During his time in the Great Plains Conference, Bishop Scott Jones was fond of ta talking about membership/commitment as involving "Worship plus two." That is is--regular worship attendance and involvement in one ministry that nurtures you (Sunday School, a Bible study or small group, music) and one ministry where you serve (a committee, choir, oir, hospitality tasks like greeting or ushering, helping in the nursery). It really does take a village, or in this case a congregation to fulfill our mission to Welcome, Love, Grow, and Serve. In this newsletter, you will find a "Time and Talent" Surv Survey. Please prayerfully consider where God is calling you to serve, indicating a an X for ongoing commitments and a ✔ if it is a new commitment/call. We especially always need people to chair and/or serve on ministry areas. We will have these 'Time and Talent' ent' surveys available in worship also. You can fill this out and drop it in the offering plate or in the church office. We'd like to have them back from everyone by September 4th. Thank you for how you already serve and your willingness to be faithful in new ways. Youth Group 3 p.m. Youth Room INSIDE GLIMPSE September 2016 Sept. The annual conference program applies to all conference and district events, as well as all local church events and activities. By completing this certification program, individuals are authorized to work with children, youth and vulnerable adults in any church-related setting. All individuals in the Great Plains Conference renewing or completing first-time certification will complete their education and certification process online. Be sure to click on 'church or faith based ...' under the organization selection and if asked, St. Marks as the church. Once registered with the online learning system, applicants are encouraged to complete the online training process for certification in 30 days. Training may be completed anytime, anywhere, using the online system. Applicants may complete the training modules at their own pace and request reference letters electronically. Lay and clergy references are required as part of the certification process. State and national background checks are completed for each applicant. Allow 30 days for certification. Individuals can log on at any time to check on the status of their application. The cost for certification is $30 to cover state and national background checks. Applicants are responsible for making a secure online payment to cover the cost of their background check. - See more at: http://www.greatplainsumc.org/safegatherings#sthash.hPJSOaAQ.dpuf Those with expired certification or will expire in 2016 are listed below. We are very excited to tell you that our YOUTH GROUP has joined forces with Antioch Church of the Nazarene for Youth programming programming! This is a natural extension of what happens in the elementary aged Sunday School. This way we can combine our small numbers, pool resources, provide extra leadership and work together with God to continue to offer our students a quality Youth program. The ACN pastors, Pastor Don Bird and Pastor Bertha Bello (Nueva Vida), are supporting and encouraging this new arrangement along with Pastor Cheryl and Janet Carter. We are hopeful that this will be a new and worthwhile change for our Youth. All students in 6th - 12th grade, and their friends in that age-group, age are welcome, regardless of church affiliation. Please pray with me as older ACN students respond to this opportunity and new 6th grade students studen from both churches move up to the youth program. Please pray that the students will welcome each other, form new friendships and find the changes helpful. Also, please tell any teenagers you know about our program, or give Janet a name and address and we'll invite them! We have two main kinds of youth activities. Some students attend only one of these activities, and some students come to both: 1. On Sunday mornings we have YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL from about 10:45 - 11.30 am in the youth room downstairs. irs. We spend time talking together about how things are going and then we talk about God and how to follow God better. We usually share our prayer ideas and we always pray. No-one one is required to ta talk or pray - it's ok just listen! 2. On Sunday afternoons ternoons we have YOUTH GROUP from 3-5 5 pm in the youth room. Youth Group is a mixture of Bible le stuff, discussions, praying, talking, listening, service projects, games, special events, movies, meals together, snacks etc. We usually have two Sundays each month that focus on Bible study and discussion, one Sunday each month that includes some kind of service project and one Sunday that is a special event or games based program. Students receive a calendar each month telling them what is going on and Janet often texts them with reminders or special information. They can also keep in touch with their Youth Group friends and get updates about events on the cell phone app, GroupMe. Each year we plan a Youth Mission Trip that lasts about a week in June or July and we have fund-raising raising projects throughout the year to help students pay for that trip. Many thanks to adults who regularly support this important part of the youth year. All youth programs, special events and trips are optional, and the students' friends are always welcome to attend, even if they don't come to church with us. We are planning to hold a traditional tea fundraiser in May 2017 and really need as many teacup and saucer sets as we can get donated. If you have any you would like to donate, you can bring them by the church hurch at anytime and leave them in the church office. We are appreciative of any assistance you can give.
