The Great Catsby –
A Great Success!
On June 9th Woods Humane Society celebrated 57 years of
service with a Gala of epic proportions and 1920s flare. “The
Great Catsby… Puttin’ on
the Leash” drew nearly 400
people to the magnificent

friends, fine food and wine,
and auction winnings from
San Diego to London and
back. When it was all said and
done the dogs and cats at
Woods celebrated to the tune
of more than $90,000!

The Woods Humane Society family of staff and

Dwyne Willis. His vision, along with a team of
incredible volunteers, made this year’s event the

Dear Friends of Woods Humane Society,
It’s an honor to write to you, for the first time, as the new President of the
Board of Directors. My involvement with Woods spans more than two
decades, first as a fan and donor, later as a member of the capital campaign
committee that raised the funds for our state-of-the-art facility, and then
finally as a member of the Board of Directors. Throughout that time
my commitment and appreciation for Woods has only grown as has my
admiration for the work that is done by the Woods board members.
To that end, I’d like to recognize the work of two extraordinary board
members: Louisa Smith and Helen Meyers. This June, after six years of service,
we said goodbye to these two wonderful women, but only with a promise
of their continued involvement in other capacities. The Board would like to
thank both Louisa and Helen for their six years of service, their leadership as
past presidents, their boundless energy and passion, and for the thousands of
lives they helped to change in SLO County.
Finally, I want to share a major milestone for Woods Humane Society. Since
moving in to our new facility in 2006 we’ve worked tirelessly to reach the
goal of 1,100 adoptions in a single year. This fiscal year (July 1, 2011 – June
30, 2012) we not only hit the mark but beat it, by adopting 1,161 dogs, cats,
puppies and kittens into loving new homes! Congratulations to the talented
staff at Woods Humane Society and to every one of those wonderful animals
and their lucky new families.
And to all of you, I share my
most sincere gratitude. As a
nonprofit organization Woods
Humane Society depends on
your continued support and
generosity. Year in and year
out you make the homeless
animals of the Central Coast your
priority and in doing so change
thousands of lives – both fourlegged and two-legged. For that,

Woods Humane Society is celebrating our 20th annual
Wiggle Waggle Walk for Woods and we invite everyone in our
community to participate. The goal of Wiggle Waggle is to
provide local K9 lovers an opportunity to celebrate the human/
animal bond with their beloved four legged companion, all
while helping to generate much needed financial support for
the homeless animals that are staying with us at Woods.
The theme for this year’s event is A Festive Day in Sher-WOODS
Forest!
We are happy to have the participation of local K9 groups to
present demonstrations on canine handling and obedience. If
you think your dog has what it takes, you might be interested
in participating in some of our K9 Contests including: Best in
Theme Costume Contests, Best Costume, and Best K9 Trick!
First place K9’s from each contest are automatically entered
into our Best in Show Contest.
Wiggle Waggle events include pet related vendors, local
businesses, food, games, raffle, pet photography, and a 1-mile
K9 Pack Walk!

All of the proceeds that are generated through our annual
fundraising pledge walk go directly to the humane sheltering
and ongoing veterinary care of the animals at Woods Humane
Society. We have recently celebrated our 57th Anniversary, and

two wonderful additions to
the Woods Family.
Welcome to
the Team!
Dr. Susan Powell, DVM, PhD
Staff Veterinarian
Dr. Susan Powell believes in offering the best medical and surgical care to our
shelter dogs and cats and educating adopters so they can make the best decisions
for both their new pet and themselves. Dr. Powell graduated from the Ohio State
University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. After a yearlong medical/surgical
internship at Veterinary Medical and Surgical Group in Ventura California, Dr. Powell
moved to the Coachella Valley where she worked for a small animal clinic and later
as the shelter veterinarian for Riverside County’s Thousand Palms Animal Shelter.
Dr. Powell lives in Paso Robles with her husband, three dogs and three cats.
Serena Martinez
Director of Operations
Serena comes to Woods Humane Society
with a broad range of experience in both
the corporate and nonprofit sectors.
Serena spent four years as the COO of the
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and
Port Heuneme where she developed
a number of very successful programs
and managed 13 locations and over
100 employees. More recently Serena
served as the Marketing and Events
Director for the Ventura Chamber of
Commerce. In 2010 Serena returned home to
the Central Coast and put down roots near Paso Robles where she lives
with her husband, four dogs and one very bossy cat.

Critter Camp:
Building a
More Humane
Tomorrow
This summer we opened our doors to 160 Critter
Campers, age 9-12, who joined the animals
of Woods Humane Society for 10 weeklong
summer day camps. Critter Camp is more
than just having a good time with cats and
dogs…each day focuses on a specific humane
education topic (bite prevention, animal abuse,
overpopulation, etc.) and when campers are not
learning how to become responsible pet owners,
they are working one on one with a shelter
dog—teaching obedience and agility to their K9
counterparts.
We do not stop there! Each day is packed
with animal demonstrations ranging from the
awesome Arroyo Grande Police Department’s K9
Officers, the amazing birds of prey from Pacific
Wildlife care, the incredible GIANT insects and
reptiles from the Charles Paddock Zoo, the regal
wolves from WharWolf Rescue; The snakes,
kangaroos, and porcupines from our friends at
Zoo to You; Debbie “The Bird Lady” Schmidt’s
talkative and entertaining parrots and macaws;
and much more…
When campers are not on-site at Woods Humane
Society, they are out visiting the Equine Center at
Cal Poly or learning about our amazing local sea
life at the Avilla Beach Sea Life Center!
Critter Camp is the flagship of Wood Humane
Society’s humane education program and
we are honored to have the support of local
organizations as we strive to provide local youth
with as many opportunities as possible to learn
about the humane care of our domestic animals
while respecting animals both inside and outside
of our geographic environment.

that we will launch another day camp over

MYM Feline-ality...
Speed Dating for Cats
Imagine the heart-warming sight of a cat going home with a family that perfectly
matches his adventurous personality … a confident, loving tabby cat being handpicked by a retired couple looking for companionship … or an energetic tuxedo cat
going home with the newlywed couple who will provide a lifelong home.
Increasing the likelihood that adopted cats will be a good match with their new
families is the underlying goal of the Meet Your Match Feline-ality Adoption
Program, a program of the ASPCA®.

Woods Humane Society successfully launched the Feline-ality program on
June 1st, further increasing the potential for successful, permanent
placements for our adopted cats. The program — which includes a
Feline-ality behavior assessment of each cat and a brief survey of each
adopter — relies on a color-coded matchmaking system that brings
compatible companions together. The result is a reduction in the number
of adopted cats returned to agency because they aren’t a good fit.
The cat assessment reliably predicts, based on its Feline-ality, how an
individual cat is likely to behave in its new home. For example, a cat with a
green color-coded description would be a “Party Animal”, “MVP” or “Leader
of the Band.” Green cats are savvy, unflappable and adventurous. A cat with
an orange classification makes a great companion kitty, and would be called
a “Sidekick,” “Executive” or “Personal Assistant.” A cat with a purple classification is
one that seeks affection, is quiet and stays out of trouble. It could be called a “Secret
Admirer,” “Love Bug” or “Private Investigator.”
“The goal for every adoption is to find a loving home
for our cats,” says Steve Kragenbrink,

Programs Director. “The Feline-ality
program helps us do that. It helps
our adoption counselors match
the expectations and lifestyles of
the adopters with the behaviors
and feline-alities of the cats; and
everyone—adopters, agency staff, and
most of all, the cats—benefits from the
program.”
