A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR
My dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus,
“Violence against women, inside or outside the home, is never justified. Violence in any form – physical, sexual,
psychological, or verbal is sinful; often, it is a crime as well."
(U.S Catholic Bishops, When I Call for Help, 2002)
In addition to October being Respect Life month, our bishops have also designated October as Domestic Violence
Awareness Month. The tragedy of domestic violence may be one of the most forgotten among many respect life issues. The
Catholic Bishops of the United States affirmed their stance against domestic violence and their support for victims of
domestic violence in their 2002 statement, When I Call for Help: A Pastoral Response to Domestic Violence against
Women. Whenever there is any type of domestic violence – even though it may be very, very difficult for the victim to do or
support – it should be reported. Let us all pray for victims of domestic violence that they may have the strength and support
needed to break the vicious cycle in which they find themselves.
Aren’t most of us, when we receive an invitation to a wedding, flattered and we make every effort to attend? Yet none of
those invited by the King in today’s Parable of the Wedding Feast attended. In fact, they refused twice and then actually
mistreated those who brought the invitation! Each of us has been invited to the Feast, in fact to several feasts. Mass, the
Eucharist, is indeed a Feast! Yet, sadly, we know many do not respond to the Lord’s invitation to join Him at the table
every Sunday. Even those who do respond may not always keep in mind both the importance and the love behind this Feast.
God invites us in so many ways to become close to Him! This invitation comes to us constantly through Sacred Scripture.
How many of us hear the Word, but then just go back to our lives as they were before? That is what is happening in this
week’s parable. Those invited ignore the invitation and continue with their “same old” lives. The key message is that it does
not matter if we respond to God’s invitation with anger or indifference – both are equally grave reactions.
For those who would like to prepare better for Sunday Mass each day and have all daily Mass readings emailed to them, the
USCCB now emails readings daily and is also working on daily audio and video reflections! You can subscribe to this
wonderful service at www.usccb.org clicking on “Bible” and then “Today’s Reading.”
Thanks to everyone who made some comments to me about tabernacle placement. Certainly it is a very sensitive issue! For
many generations the tabernacle was “front and center” on the altar of sacrifice, i.e., the main altar. In recent times, more
and more churches have been built with Eucharistic chapels where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. Obviously, our
church architecture does not support “bringing the tabernacle” back into church. And, with the location of our Eucharistic
chapel that allows us to secure the rest of our building while the chapel remains open 24-7, we are able to have Perpetual
Adoration here – a great blessing to our parish. However, as I shared before, unfortunately our tabernacle is moveable and
is neither central to the church nor central in its own chapel. More next week.
All remaining information packets for the celebrations of Confirmation or First Communion during the 2014-2015 school
year are now in the parish office. Times for family meetings for these sacraments are now posted on SignUpGenius and all
these meetings should be complete before Thanksgiving so that all paperwork deadlines can be easily met.

COMMUNION: A Glimpse of the Heavenly Banquet
“Because he [Christ] is one, we can only receive him in unity. If ever we were opposed to unity, we would be unable to meet with him…we
cannot have communion with the Lord if we are not in communion with each other; that when we go to meet him in the Mass, we
necessarily go to meet each other, to be at one with each other.” (Pope Benedict XVI, God is Near Us)
Take this, all of you, and eat of it…take this, all of you, and drink from it.
SINGING DURING COMMUNION: WHO, WHAT, WHY, & WHEN?
In the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (the “playbook” for how to celebrate Mass),
the Church teaches clearly that the purpose of singing during Communion is to
“express the communicants’ union in spirit by means of the unity of their voices, to
show joy of heart, and to highlight more clearly the communitarian nature of the
procession to receive Communion.” (#86) While the choir may sing alone from time
to time, it clear that the Church intends for our voices to be raised in song together
while we journey together towards the table of the Lord.
The GIRM also points out that the Communion song begins while the priest is
receiving Communion and continues “as long as the sacrament is being
administered to the faithful.” The Communion song is one of unity in every
aspect: it unites us in a common action, and accompanies the whole Communion
procession. While each of us is consuming the Body and Blood of the Lord, our
fellow Christians sing for us – we take up each other’s song. And after we have
received, we continue singing until all have done so, the Blessed Sacrament is
reposed, and we sit.
Then, “the priest and faithful spend some time praying privately.” (GIRM #87)
Rather than during the Communion song, this is the proper moment for a private,
silent prayer of thanksgiving. But even here, we make this private prayer of
thanksgiving together. The liturgy is always communal – this is where Communion gets its name!
“Union with Christ is also union with all those to whom he gives himself. I cannot possess Christ just for myself; I can belong to him only
in union with all those who have become, or who will become, his own. Communion draws me out of myself towards him, and thus also
towards unity with all Christians. We become „one body‟, completely joined in a single existence. Love of God and love of neighbor are now
truly united: God incarnate draws us all to himself.” (Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, 2006)
Communion Procession:
We walk together in solidarity, symbolizing our life’s journey together to God.
We hold our heads up, singing together
We bow our head before receiving Communion
We “make of our hands a throne” or receive on the tongue…we receive not take.
We reverently receive the chalice, and drink in the richness of God’s grace.
We return to kneel in sung prayer, but not individualized…in community with one another.

trainees in your prayers as they nurture their gifts and acquire new skills so that they can bring Christ’s
love and care to hurting people on behalf of our parish. Also pray for our Stephen Leaders who will guide

If you were invited to a neighbor's barbecue, what would you wear? If you were
planning to attend the symphony, what might you wear? If invited to an evening
wedding, what might you wear? With your family, discuss how our preparations
for an event and our choice of attire indicate the importance and value we place
on the occasion. In today's Gospel Jesus uses this metaphor to talk about the
kingdom of heaven. Read Matthew 22:1-14. Discuss why the guest was thrown
out of the wedding feast. What does Jesus expect of those who accept his
invitation of salvation? How can we show that we are worthy of God’s
invitation? Pray together as a family that you will respond wholeheartedly to God's invitation to salvation.

CHOSEN: CALLED TO BE MORE
Mark your calendars now for this Jr. High event for 6th-8th graders at Good Shepherd Parish from 5-9:30 PM on Saturday,

people better understand what it means to be called by Jesus as a disciple today. The evening will also include a
concurrent session just for parents to better equip them to be the primary educators in the faith of their children, including

for girls’ volleyball. Registration forms are
available on the Boosters’ web page and in
the gathering space. Please return registration

ST. MAX IS COLLECTING PULL TABS
St. Max is collecting pull tabs to donate to Cincinnati’s Ronald
McDonald House. We’re helping keep families together when it
matters most!! Our goal is to become a member of the Thanks a
Million Club by collecting 1,000 pounds of tabs!! I made our
third drop off of tabs – we had 22.2lbs.! That brings our total
so far to 68lbs.!! Your support of this program and the families
of critically ill children is greatly appreciated! There is a marked
container behind the desk in the gathering space to place your
tabs. Feel free to take a little tab house for collecting or stickers
to put on your own container at
home, they are available behind the
desk as well.

HOLIDAY GIFT BAZAAR
A group of parishioners with home-based
businesses will offer the 14th annual
Holiday Gift Bazaar on Sunday,
November 16, from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
We are inviting other parishioners (or
friends/family) with home-based
businesses who would like to join us in this fundraiser for
the St. Max Building Fund. This event is intended for direct
sellers, not crafters with hand-made products (direct sellers
typically are not able to participate in craft shows). Booth
