A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR My dear brothers and sisters in our Lord Jesus, We proclaim that human life is a precious gift from God; that each person who receives this gift has responsibilities toward God, self and others; and that society, through its laws and social institutions, must protect and nurture human life at every stage of its existence. (U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities,” November 2001) For as long as most of us can remember, the first Sunday of October has been designated Respect Life Sunday. This year’s theme is “Each of Us is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation.” “Masterpiece” is a very strong and very appropriate word! Each and every human person – the unborn, those with special needs, the sick, the dying, the imprisoned, the marginalized, the good and the “not-so-good” regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic level or sexual orientation – each and every human person is a masterpiece of God’s creation! Thus, each and every person needs to be given dignity and respect. Most certainly the horror of abortion (over 4000 babies killed in our country alone each day) is at the forefront of pro-life activities – but being “pro-life” is so much more than just being “anti-abortion.” Perhaps today’s epistle might help to frame us as a pro-life people. St. Paul urges the Philippians to “…have no anxiety at all…the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” St. Paul is trying to remind us that if we trust in the Lord, if we turn to the Lord regularly, if we view the Lord as our constant companion and supporter, many of the trials we face and many of the burdens we bear will be easier. Certainly among the trials and burdens we face as humans is the temptation to judge other people for a variety of reasons. Often when giving penances during confession I invite people to look at others (and themselves!) and say “That is a child of God… that is a child of God…” Whenever there is doubt that life begins at conception, whenever the temptation is there to judge another, whenever there is cause to wonder if certain people in certain circumstances should be alive or not, we need to remember that each and every person is indeed a masterpiece of God’s creation! Then as St. Paul tells us in the final verse of today’s second reading, “the God of peace will be with you.” During this pro-life month, let us all think about how we treat each other – how are we truly and authentically pro-life in each and every relationship we have, in each and every word we speak, in each and every thought we have, and in each and every action we take. It is with great sadness that I announce that Marv Nieport, our youth and young adult minister, will be leaving our parish staff. Marv has faithfully coordinated what I am going to call a “holistic” youth and young adult ministry – attentive to catechesis, service, prayer and social events. He has consistently proclaimed and witnessed what the Catholic Church teaches. He has been a great blessing to me personally, to us as a staff and to the parish. Marv will be resuming work in the private sector as an engineer (his “first career.”) Please join me in wishing him and Tina, his bride of less than three months, all the best in their future! But this gray cloud does have a silver lining! I am also pleased to announce that Zack Hinger, a “son of our parish,” has joined our parish staff as interim coordinator of youth and young adult ministry. Zack has recently served as youth minister and director of religious education at St. Patrick Parish in Taylor Mill, Kentucky (a few miles south of I-275) and also taught part-time in the religion department at Holy Cross High School in Covington. “Welcome home,” Zack! We will be forming a search committee, headed up by Sharon Christy, our Pastoral Associate for Evangelization and Catechesis, to identify Marv’s full-time replacement. Our hope is that this person will be identified and join the staff by the beginning of 2015. Again, all remaining information packets for the celebrations of Confirmation or First Communion during the 2014-2015 school year are now in the parish office. Times for family meetings for these sacraments are now posted on SignUpGenius and all family meetings for these sacraments should be complete before Thanksgiving so that all paperwork deadlines can be easily met. That’s it for now – God bless one and all! Fr. Geoff The flowers in the sanctuary were donated by: Sue & Jerry Williston, Scott & Helen Mondi, in honor of their wedding THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 5, 2014 WORSHIP LEARNING ABOUT THE LITURGY : Q&A Q. How do we choose which one of the “Mystery of Faith” acclamations are used? A. There are three different texts which can be used as the acclamation following the Institution Narrative. The priest invites the people by announcing “The Mystery of Faith”, and the assembly responds with an acclamation directed to Christ. There are no rubrics governing which acclamation text is used – the decision is left to the pastoral ministers in the local community. The first acclamation ends with “until you come again”; it is aptly used during the seasons of Advent and Christmas, which are focused on Christ’s coming among us both at birth and at the end of time. The third acclamation directly references the cross and resurrection, which makes it appropriate for use during Lent and Easter, seasons in which we focus particularly on the Paschal Mystery. The second acclamation connects directly to the mystery of the Eucharist, in singing “When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup…” It is good for any day or season, and could be used effectively during Ordinary Time. In some cases the decision is a musical one: in a given setting of the Eucharistic acclamations, one text fits the music better. Regardless of which text is sung, the acclamation serves as an expression of the assembly’s faith in the Eucharist. Remember that almost all the prayers of Mass are directed not to Christ, but to God the Father. This acclamation is a notable exception, in honor of Christ’s sacramental presence now on the altar. Submit your questions on Mass – why we do what we do - to [email protected] and watch future bulletins for an answer. COME JOIN US It’s not too late to register your child for our Children’s Choir (3rd-8th grade) or Cherub Choir (1st-3rd grade)! Both choirs have weekly rehearsals throughout the school year, and sing for Mass every few weeks. Search the Music Ministry page on the parish website for an online registration link and schedule for the year. Of course every second of our lives....but at times, God's love is especially precious to us, times when: we lose a loved one; life becomes confusing and we do not know where to turn; or life becomes meaningless and depression sets in. At times like these, it is very important to have someone who cares. Our parish has trained 23 lay people, Stephen Ministers, who offer a ministry of confidential Christian caring. Would a Stephen Minister's care help you? Please call Deacon John at 226-3428, or Jill Back at 259-8225, or Holly at 777-4322 ext. 116, to find out how to receive this wonderful ministry. If you prefer, our confidential email is [email protected]. ST. GABRIEL CONSOLIDATED EARNS CASH FOR YOUR TRASH! Thanks to those of you who saved your BoxTops, Labels, and printer cartridges for our school! We’d like to ask all parishioners to check the things you would normally throw away – they can be very valuable to us! Please save your used printer cartridges, “Labels for Education” and “BoxTops for Education” printed on packages from General Mills, Tyson and Campbells and put them in the collection box located in the gathering space near the library! We appreciate your help! If you have any questions about what to save or where to drop them in our collection box, please call Teri Dean at 777-7936. SPIRITUAL ADOPTION OF A CHILD-HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Your spiritually adopted baby was born this month - - nine months after his/her mother conceived him/ her. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. He/she is no different now than he/she before birth except that he breathes and eats differently. He/she truly a miracle. He began as a 46-chromosome cell and has developed over the past nine months into this unique human baby. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved his/her life. Thank you on behalf of all of the little babies that you cared enough COMPANIONS ON A JOURNEY GRIEF SUPPORT RASKALS RANDOM ACTS OF SIMPLE KINDNESS AFFECTING LOCAL SENIORS West Chester Township coordinates a program each year to help senior citizens in our community with simple yard clean-up chores. If interested, fill out a volunteer form and leave with a representative at the Charitable IMPACT table. Contact: Sol Gross at 759-2131 or Peggy Hill at 889-0083. Saturday November 8, 2013 “Blessed are they who grieve and mourn for they will be comforted” ~Matthew 5:4 All members lose the same person but have different relationships. THE TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 5, 2014 EVANGELIZATION & CATECHESIS In today's Gospel, Jesus once again speaks to the priests and elders with a parable. In this parable, the landowner leases his vineyard to tenants and sends his servants to collect the portion of the harvest that the tenants owe to him. After telling the parable, Jesus questions the chief priests and elders about what the landowner will do to the wicked tenants. Family Fun In an ideal household, family members know the rules and follow them consistently. Sometimes we need to be reminded of the rules and their importance. As you gather as a family, talk about some of the most important rules of your household. How are family members reminded when rules are not being followed? What are some of God's rules that we must follow? How do we respond when we fail to follow God’s rules? God sends people to help us love and obey him. How do we respond to them? If we are like the wicked tenants in the parable, then we need to change our ways if we want to be part of the Kingdom of God. Pray together as a family that you will follow God's ways. Pray together the Act of Contrition for the times when your family has not followed God. EARLY CHILDHOOD RELIGIOUS FORMATION OF YOUTH NEWS Consistency is important for young children to learn.
