Cedarhurst will bring ART
to your classroom.
Cedarhurst’s Education Director offers in-school
programs that provide interactive learning
experiences, connecting the visual arts with all
areas of classroom curricula. All lessons carry a
$2 charge per student. A travel fee (41¢ per mile)
is charged for in-school programs presented
outside the City of Mt. Vernon.
The Cedarhurst staff instructor will bring all
necessary supplies and materials. Classes range
from 20 minutes to 45 minutes in length. Please
schedule in-school lessons one (1) month in
advance!

Elephant and Piggie! Clay Elephant
Grades PK-3
Students will listen to the silly tale, Should I Share My Ice Cream? (An Elephant and Piggie Book) then
l create an elephant plaque using clay and a variety of tools. There will be a short discussion and
demonstration of materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.
The Pout-Pout Fish: Clay Fish!
Grades K-4
Students will listen to The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen then create a wonderful fish of their own!
Students will learn some fun fishy facts and create fish of their own out of clay. There will be a short discussion and
demonstration of materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.
Miss Spider’s Tea Party!
Grades Pk-1
Students will be drawn into the colorful world of Miss. Spider’s Tea Party by David Kirk. Using model magic,
colored wire and our imagination we will create creepy crawlies of our own! There will be a short discussion
and demonstration of materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.
Picasso Flowers
Sole Pendants!
After reading a short story about the life of Pablo
Picasso, students will create a simple painting
inspired by his work titled, «Hand with Flowers».
There will be a short discussion and demonstration of
materials use prior to the activity. This class will be
adapted to appropriate grade level.
Textures are all around us and often they exist right under
our noses! In this project, students discover the beauty of textures
found in a surprising place… on the sole of their shoes! Students will create
a pendant using clay, paint and a variety of tools. There will be a short discussion
and demonstration of materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted
to appropriate grade level.

Where the Wild Things Are
Navajo Pottery
Students will listen to Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak then
create a wild monster mask of their own. This simple story entertains as it
helps its audience master common fears. There will be a short discussion and
demonstration of materials use prior to the activity.
Native Americans have a long history of making beautiful pottery.
Students will study the pottery making of the Navajo, learning about
processes used by potters, about the philosophy underlying the making
of Navajo pottery, and about the purpose for which various pots are
made. There will be a short discussion and demonstration of materials
use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.

Clay: It’s Greek to Me!
Grade 5-8
Archaeologists have discovered a great many ancient Greek pieces of pottery.
Between household vases and funeral pots, archaeologists have been able to
piece together a great deal of knowledge about daily life in ancient Greece.
Students will learn about classical Greek pottery then create a vase of their own.
There will be a short discussion and demonstration of materials use prior to the
activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.

Clay Roses
Grade K-4
This is a perfect activity prior to Valentine Day or Mother’s Day. Students will listen
to the story The old lady that swallowed a Rose by Lucille Colandro or What Not to
Get Your Mother for Mother’s day by Martha Simpson then create a beautiful rose
out of clay. There will be a short discussion and demonstration of materials use
prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.
Byzantine Medallions
Birch Tree Paintings
The wealthy Byzantine Empire had a huge influence on personal ornamentation.
Badges, pendants and medallions were widely produced to denote a person’s
office or rank. Students will use clay and colorful rhinestones to create their own
Byzantine-style medallions. There will be a short discussion and demonstration of
materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade
level.
Who doesn›t love the stark, bare beauty of birch
trees set against the quietness of snow? Learn
about birch trees and create a beautiful birch tree
painting using watercolors and paint. There will be
a short discussion and demonstration of materials
use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to
appropriate grade level.
Grades 1-8
Bubbles in Art!
Grades 1-8
Learn about the property of bubbles! What shape is the shiney part? Where is the
light source? What color are the bubbles and why do they start as a clear liquid
and then have rainbow colors? After discussion, students will use pastels to create
beautiful, vibrant bubble work of art!
Magical Monets
Grades 1-8
Learn about the artist, Claude Monet and
experiment with different painting techniques
to create your own amazing “Monet”
Painting! There will be a short discussion
and demonstration of materials use prior
to the activity. This class will be adapted to
appropriate grade level.
Grades 4-8
Clay Gargoyles!
Grades 4-8
Gargoyles were sculptures of imaginary beasts created during the Middle Ages.
They were located along the roof and downspouts on cathedral buildings.
Students will learn about these creatures and create one of their own out of clay.
There will be a short discussion and demonstration of materials use prior to the
activity. This class will be adapted to appropriate grade level.
Aztec Suns
Grades 3-8
The Aztecs worshiped the Sun god. Students will learn about the art of the
Aztecs then create an Aztec sun with unique features and expressions using the
popular Mexican Folk Art form of “tooling.” There will be a short discussion and
demonstration of materials use prior to the activity. This class will be adapted to
appropriate grade level.

American Eagle brings the classic characters of Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Tigger, and
Eeyore to life in this quaint musical that brings A.A.Milne›s to your students in their original form. These
characters re-create three of the classic Pooh tales as you read them as a child. Students will be engaged by
the words, music and dance as we pay tribute to this eloquent author.

Flamenco! Las Guitarras de Espana

(7:00pm Family Performance, call for tickets)
The rhythms of Andalusia form the basis for this ensemble’s fiery performance
of Spanish guitar, dance, and percussion. Las Guitarras is an energetic and lively
ensemble celebrating the traditional forms of music and dance as well as original compositions.
Students will have a chance to interact with performers as we travel to Spain!

Grab your passport and come on an adventure to the Land Down Under! Wildlife
Encounters will showcase live animals and talk about their survival, natural history,
geography, natural behaviors and conservation education. Wildlife Encounters
works with «Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom» and they are currently airing on
«Animal Planet» promoting awareness and enthusiasm for wildlife conservation
education, both at the grass roots community level and on a national scale. Each
presentation will feature live animal ambassadors from Australia, New Guinea and
New Zealand.
Animals in the show range from 5 - 8 animals from
the following list. The list is subject to change due to
individual state and federal laws and regulations.
Kangaroo or Wallaby ,Salt Water Crocodile,
Kookaburra, Frilled Lizard, Lesser Flying Phalanger,
Parrot, Ringtail Possum, Spiny Anteater, Australian
Bird of Prey, Emu, Australian Parrot, Dingo,
Australian Snakes, Lizards and Skinks.
Jabali is Kiswahili (Kenya›s national language) for “rock” and is unlike any
program we have ever offered. Jabali Afrika combines a fusion of traditional
African rhythms and original compositions and makes them come alive
on a wide variety of musical instruments.The group accompanies the
instrumental music with vocal harmonies that form the foundation of modern
rock, jazz, blues, and
more. Traditional and
modern dancing and
choreography, topped
off with stunning
traditional African tribal
costumes combines to
provide a multi-cultural
experience that will
leave your audience
enriched, educated, and

NBA All-Star Performer (2006, 07, 08, 09, 10), Former Phoenix Suns and Mercury Performer,
World›s Greatest Basketball Dribbler (12-time Guinness World Record Holder)
Joe «the trick-star» Odhiambo is originally from Kenya in East Africa. His humble upbringing
taught him the drive and work ethic which has allowed him to become the best in his class.
Odhiambo now communicates these tough life lessons and experiences to his audience. He
strongly believes that even though we start the race in different places, at the end of the day,
what you put in is what you will get back.
Odhiambo shows the students that all people can succeed in life through five attributes Joe
believes in:
GOODTOKNOW
Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Closed Mondays and national holidays.
•Fees -
Museum tours are free of charge. School Performing Arts programs carry a fee of $3 per student. Your group is allowed one free adult
admission for every 15 students. Fees for extended programs vary.
•Chaperones - School groups must be accompanied by one chaperone for every 15 students. Designated chaperones must be over 21 years
old and accept responsibility for monitoring their group’s behavior. Cedarhurst reserves the right to deny admission to any group that is not
adequately chaperoned.
•Access - Cedarhurst Center for the Arts is accessible to the handicapped. Please advise us if your group has any special needs.
•Lunch Accommodations -
Cedarhurst does not have
indoor lunchroom facilities for school groups. Weather permitting, groups are
welcome to bring sack lunches and use the outdoor concrete patio at Mitchell
Museum or the outdoor tables at Shrode Art Center. We can provide details on
the parks and restaurants in the area.

Invite Cedarhurst’s education staff to come to your school’s monthly staff meeting
to learn about the many opportunities that we offer to schools in southern Illinois.
Topics covered: Free tours, Teacher Resource Lending Library, Exhibitions, Beck
Family Education Center, special programming and classes for adults and children.
Resource Lending Library
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts offers a variety of materials for teachers to use in the
classroom. Videos, books, poster sets and curriculum kits about related subjects
are available for loan to teachers/ schools from the Resource Lending Library at
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts.
Tour s
Cedarhurst Center for the Arts offers FREE staff/ docent led tours that focus on
temporary and permanent exhibitions in the galleries, sculpture park and grounds.
Our docents are qualified professional volunteers, many with an art education
background. Tours are designed to include concepts and skills appropriate to students’
grade level. Hands-on activities for students are available during the school year. A
fee of $1.00 per student will be charged to cover materials. Docents will work with
educators to determine activities, concepts, and time frame of tours. One chaperone is
required for every 15 students. Tours on specific topics related to school curriculum can
also be arranged. Please schedule tours 2 weeks in advance by calling 618.242.1236,
