Williamstown
Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Irish aristocrat,
settled on the wild island in 1798 and built a magnificent
mansion and estate. However,
he became entangled in a
mysterious military enterprise
with Aaron Burr in 1806. As
a result, President Thomas
Jefferson accused both men of
plotting treason in attempting
to establish an empire in the
Southwest.
Blennerhassett Island is a noteworthy historic location for a
variety of reasons. During the 1760s, the famous Delaware
Indian, Nemacolin, made the island his home. In addition,
renowned figures including George Rogers Clark, King
Charles X of France, Johnny Appleseed, Henry Clay and Walt
Whitman visited the island.
Noted Island Visitors
Originally located in Belpre, Ohio, this historical and
architectural landmark was completed in 1802 and called
“Maple Shade” by the Putnam family, who were close friends
of the Blennerhassett family. Today it remains one of the
Ohio Valley’s oldest and best preserved wooden homes.
Thanks to the generosity of the Shell Chemical Company,
the Putnam-Houser House was rescued from demolition
and moved to the island in December 1986. Restoration of
the structure has been accomplished largely through the
volunteerism of the Blennerhassett Historical Foundation
and was completed in July 2009. Today, the house, once
the West’s largest and most beautiful home, is open to the
public to be enjoyed by everyone who has an interest in this
significant structure.

Other Influences
The Blennerhassetts
The splendor of America’s frontier is reflected in the tranquil
beauty of timeless Blennerhassett Island; yet the placid
nature of the isle belies its turbulent past.

historic Blennerhassett Island is via a 19th century-style
sternwheeler riverboat on the beautiful Ohio River, carrying
passengers to a setting of a bygone era.
Public excursions are available from the first weekend in
May through the last weekend of October. A schedule of

Harman Blennerhassett, a wealthy Irish aristocrat,
settled on the wild island in 1798 and built a magnificent
mansion and estate. However,
he became entangled in a
mysterious military enterprise
with Aaron Burr in 1806. As
a result, President Thomas
Jefferson accused both men of
plotting treason in attempting
to establish an empire in the
Southwest.
Blennerhassett Island is a noteworthy historic location for a
variety of reasons. During the 1760s, the famous Delaware
Indian, Nemacolin, made the island his home. In addition,
renowned figures including George Rogers Clark, King
Charles X of France, Johnny Appleseed, Henry Clay and Walt
Whitman visited the island.
When to plan your visit
The only way to experience the enchantment of
historic Blennerhassett Island is via a 19th century-style

The exquisite mansion accidentally burned to the ground
in 1811, leaving no visible trace of its graceful, semicircular
lines. However, modern archaeologists rediscovered its
foundations in 1973. Through a continuing program of
careful historical and architectural research, the mansion
has been recreated for visitors. Work on the furnishing of its
interior is still in progress.
Please consult map and directions in this brochure.
Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History is located at the corner of 2nd and Juliana streets in downtown
Parkersburg, WV.
Blennerhassett fled the island,
but was captured and put into
the Virginia State Penitentiary.
Although Burr was tried and
acquitted and Blennerhassett was released from prison, the
lives of both men were ruined. Interestingly, most historians
now agree that Burr had set his sights on northern Mexico
for his dominion.
Blennerhassett Island and the Blennerhassett Mansion are
located on the Ohio River near Parkersburg, WV. Access to
Parkersburg is offered by U.S. 50 east/west and I-77 north/
south. The departure site for sternwheeler rides to the island
in 2010 is Civitan Park in Belpre, OH. Rides will resume from
Point Park, Parkersburg, WV, when riverfront construction is
completed. A completion date has not been established.
