Potentate’s Message
Happy New Year to all the Nobles and
Ladies of Tangier. It is with tremendous honor
and respect for those who have served before
me, to thank the nobles of Tangier for electing
me to serve as Potentate for 2015. Since
2001, when I was raised as a Master Mason
and first joined the Shrine, I have gotten
to know some of the most incredibly
dedicated men and women within the
Masonic family. I know we will have
an exciting year.
I want to express my deepest
appreciation and congratulations to Illustrious Sir Daryl Finley
and his lady Lisa for a memorable 2014. Daryl led Tangier to
some great accomplishments. I also want to thank Illustrious
Sir Jim Parks Sr. P.P. for not only his years of service to Tangier
as Treasurer but also for his friendship and advice during my
journey through shrine masonry. Be sure to welcome the
newest members of the leadership team at Tangier, Mike
Gardner will serve as Oriental Guide, supported by his Lady
Pam. Ralph Joos will serve as Treasurer as we all keep Lady
Judy in our thoughts. Lastly, we welcome Kevin Potter to the
Board of Trustees, supported by his Lady Michelle. A big thank
you also goes out to those nobles who have accepted a position
on the staff for 2015. There are some familiar faces along with
some new.
As you read this, installation for both the Divan and the Club
and Unit heads will be complete. Thanks to each and every
noble who fills a leadership role in his club or unit. Tangier is
blessed with many clubs and units that play an active role in
the temple’s success.
We had a successful year in 2014 for membership that we
will continue to build on. Eleven of our clubs or units met or
exceeded their membership goal. Way to go and thanks for
the hard work! Ironically those clubs and units also increased
their own membership. We will continue to work hard on
membership and I believe we have the right people in the right
places to continue improving our membership numbers.
Before we know it circus will be here. Please get those last
few ads sold, return your daddy ticket money, sell your friends
tickets, and prepare a place for those yard signs. We are looking
forward to a new beginning at the Mid America Center.
When you see the Potentate’s pin for 2015, the words “From
Within Our Hearts” will be written on it. To me that says it
all. It is where a man is first ready to be made a mason and the
heart is from where all we do in our lives should originate. As
long as you go with your heart you will be fine.
Again I want to thank each and every one of you for what
you do to support the world greatest philanthropy, Shriners
Hospitals for Children. I will do my best to lead in a way
that brings honor to the finest Shrine Temple in Shriners
International.
Fraternally,
Gary S. Unger
- Potentate 2016
The Red
Cross View
By: Walt Mailand
When I wrote last month I said that we had a
goal of 25 pints of whole blood and that we had
26 registered to donate. We had 26 register but they
were an entirely different 26 than we had expected.
Thanks to walk ins and the Red Cross we were able
to reach our goal. I wonder what our total would
have been if all who registered had come in?
In the last article I said that we would start to have
Saturday drives in 2015. The Red Cross has agreed
and I have checked the dates with the Tangier Office
and we are clear on the following dates: February 7,
May 9, August 8, November 14.
On two of the dates listed a Shrine Unit or
Club will be using a facility upstairs and on the
November date a Nebraska away game is scheduled
with Rutgers. These dates do not currently conflict
with Tangier activities.
Our goal is to have at least one donor from each
club or unit. We will be checking this closer in the
future. Also those who were on the Potentate’s trip
will be eligible to donate in May. We will welcome
them. This is a Shrine function so talk it up at your
meetings.
We will have more details regarding new
members to the Gallon Club and those who have
increased their total giving. It is my understanding
that we will have “Double Red” opportunities at
each session.
“Remember, the gift of life flows through you!”

Happy New Year from Sat-ra!
Where has 2014 gone? It is remarkable
how time passes so quickly. We at Sat-ra
Temple No. 59 have been busy building and
spreading hope for our children at Shriners
Hospital for Children.
The year 2015 holds the promise of great
and wonderful things for our order and our
work for the children who grace our lives and
make our efforts worthwhile.
January is dark but we do have a BINGO
Bash planned on Saturday, January 17
starting at noon. The fare for the luncheon is
Tailgate Party. Everyone is welcome to come
and have a great time with prizes, good food,
and fellowship. Contact me or Barb Gray for
additional information or tickets.
February is a busy month for Sat-ra.
Please note: Due to Grand Lodge starting on
Thursday, February 5 we needed to change
the time and start our Stated Session on
Thursday, February 5 with brunch at 10:00 am
and session at 10:45 am. Saturday, February
14 will start off with brunch at 10:00 am
followed by a ceremonial at 10:45 am. Later
on February 14 will be a Celebration of Love
dinner, a collaboration with Tangier Shrine
Center to celebrate the love in our lives.
Come and enjoy a great dinner with friends
and family.
During the Thursday, March 5 Stated
Session we will be holding our elections for
new officers; lunch at noon and session at
1:00 pm.
May we always keep the hope in our
hearts burning for the children in the Shiners
Hospital for Children because we are an
organization of hope and love.

Last month, the Chanters
performed in their annual Christmas Tour for
retirement homes, the Omaha Home for Boys,
and other places on December 2nd, 7th, and
9th, and at the Lauritzen Garden (December
13th). Some of us sang for the Kiwanis
Club at Countryside Community Church the
morning of December 16 (Tuesday) and later
that evening participated with some members
of Eastern Star and youth groups in a Masonic
Family sing at The Durham Museum, 801
So. 10th St. We will resume practicing on
Mondays starting again in January to help
improve our performances and because we
love to sing.
The Chanters held elections, and Noble
Bruce McCoy was elected Captain. He grew
up in Tecumseh Nebraska, and graduated
from Peru State College with a degree in
education. He obtained a Masters from
UNO and a Doctorate from UNL. He has
had a successful 46 year education career
in various schools in Nebraska and western
Iowa. He retired in June 2011. He was raised
a Master Mason in Covert Lodge #11 in
1976 and joined the Scottish Rite that same
year. He became a Noble of Tangier Shrine
in 1977, but due in part to family and work
commitments, did not join the Chanters until
2011.
Noble Greg Carlson was elected
Lieutenant, Noble Jim Carlton was reelected Treasurer of the unit, and Noble Glen
Petersen re-elected Recording Secretary.
Coming up in January, the Chanters have
been requested to perform at a few Masonic
installations, including that of Potentate-elect
Gary Unger. Any man with a joy for singing
who is interested in joining us should contact
any Chanter or just stop by on Mondays
around 7:00 pm at the Shrine Center. That’s
my update for January.

I hope everyone had a happy
and safe Holiday season! Welcome to the
year 2015! I would like to start by saying
congratulations to our new officers! VPMike Gardner, Secretary- Alan Cohen,
Treasurer- Mark Westadt, and myself as your
new Prez. I’m sure no one is quite as excited
as I am for this year, because I have been
planning for two years now how to make this
a fantastic year for us all!
The first thing on the agenda for us in
2015...our Christmas party! The date will
be Friday, January 16th at 6:00 pm. B&C
will provide a main dish. We would ask that
members bring a side of some sort, and of
course, your lady! It will be a good time as
always so please try and attend (due to no
official business meeting in January, we will
go over any needed info this night).
The second thing on the agenda for 2015...
our February business meeting. It will be
Thursday, February 5th. I want to mention
this now because I will be going over a lot
of stuff at this meeting. Please mark it in
the calendar so you can attend because who
knows, you might just get a little gift for
showing up!
Finally, I just want to say how honored I
am to have the opportunity to be the leader
of this great club for 2015. People constantly
ask me why I am not in a unit and to that,
I have one simple answer: because I am
committed to this club as if it were my unit.
I have been brainstorming for two years on
what I can bring to the table to make this
great club even better. I have been working
on many different things already and you
will be seeing those as the year progresses.
I know I am the youngest president of this
club by probably about 15 years or so, but
I hope that by the end of this year, you all
will be happy and excited with all the things
we are going to do to make not just this year
great, but also help us for our future years
to come!
So heres to a great 2015!
By: Maxine Lorraine Powers
As we bid farewell to the old year, 2014, and welcome the new year, 2015, we are filled with hope. Hoping for peace throughout the world
and for continued improvement in the economy of our country.
Golden Girls will have their monthly luncheon meeting on Tuesday, January 11, 12-noon, in the lower level (Oasis room) of the Shrine
Center. Betty Bligh will be the hostess. Marilyn Fuss will present the program. The history of Omaha is the subject. Helene Campbell is our
January birthday celebrant. Happy Birthday, Helene. Wishing you many more.
At our November meeting we elected Helene Campbell as Treasurer. Ramona Atherton graciously agreed to serve as president at the
Christmas luncheon. Our long time president Helen Bauder, who served us well, can no longer perform the presidential duties. Yours truly
will continue as Secretary.
An update on two of our stalwart members. Sadly, I report Courtney Nelson is now a resident at Josie Harper Hospice House and Arlene
Andersen remains at Risen Son in Council Bluffs. They are missed.
Golden Girls ended the year on a well-done note. We donated $100 to the Transportation Fund. A good-will collection at the Christmas
party luncheon for the Shriners Hospital for Children - Twin Cities totaled $85.
Wishing you a very happy New Year. May many good things find their way to all readers during the New Year.

Happy New Year. I hope all of you had
a great and Merry Christmas with family
and friends and now, with the new year we
have new leadership, and we are off and
running with a new Potentate and Divan.
Let’s get behind them and make this a
great year for Tangier.
Last month the kids had a great time at
their Christmas Party. Watching them is
always fun with all the energy they have.
It also reminds us of why we are Shriners.
Helping the kids with their medical needs
is why we do what we do. If you haven’t
visited one of our hospitals, you need to go
see one. It will open your eyes to another
world that we normally don’t see and
makes us proud to be Shriners.
Our temple meeting is January 8th
with dinner at 6:15 pm and the meeting
at 7:30 pm. Don’t forget to call in your
reservations for the dinner if you are going
to eat.
Roast The Pote. Sounds like a fun
time. Come out January 24th to roast Ill.
Sir Daryl. Tickets are available from the
Keystone Kops or the office. If you are
old enough to remember the Dean Martin
style roast, you won’t want to miss this.
I’m sure it will be a good time.
Hamburger nights start again this month.
Come out and join your fellow Nobles and
families for a meal and fellowship. Mark
your calendars as the Directors Staff will
cook February 11th. We will need your
help and it is always a good time.
Our annual Mardi Gras party will be
February 28th. We will have our Cajun
food, auction, hurricanes, dancing and all
the usual fun stuff. We will crown the king
and queen for the best costume. Breakout
your best Mardi Gras outfit and join us for
a fun night. Tickets are available from the
Directors Staff or Tangier office.
If you are looking for a unit to join,
come and check us out. We meet the 4th
Monday of the month in the lower level of
Tangier at 7:00 pm. We are always looking
for guys with new ideas. Remember to
support you blue lodge as they need your
help also. If it wasn’t for you blue lodge
you wouldn’t be a Shiner.
Remember it’s a great day to be a
Shriner.

The Greeters had their Christmas party at
Jerico’s Restaurant and a good time was had
by all the Greeters, Greeter gals, and guests.
A special thank you goes to Randy Busse
and Tracy McCurdy for making this event
happen.
The new officers for 2015 are Don Mastny,
Director; Jeff Welch, Assistant Director; Dr.
Ken Bunnell, Secretary; and Jim Wilmot,
Treasurer. Lets give a helping hand to all of
these officers for the new year.
The Shrine Circus will be in Council Bluffs
at the Mid-America Center from February
19th (Thursday ) through the 22nd (Sunday).
This is a great Circus and the Greeters will
have one booth and there will be a sign-up
sheet for people working the booth at our
February meeting. This Circus is always
fantastic for adults and children of all ages.
Come out and support the Tangier Shrine
Circus.
On January 2nd we will need Greeters at
the Tangier door at 6:15 pm for the Divan
installation. Our next Greeters meeting will
be at Pizza Ranch on 84th street (one block
South of Tangier in the shopping center on
the West side of 84th street) on January 13th.
Don’t forget the next Tangier stated meeting
is January 15th and we never have too many
Greeters at the doors.
Keep Tangier and the Greeters strong, get
new members.

Welcome to the year 2015.
We have elected new officers for this year.
They are: Jay De Young President; Larry
Drews, 1st Vice President; Dan Waldron, 2nd
Vice President; Mike Stuhr Secretary and Gary
Bunnell Treasurer.
We look forward to this year under the
guidance of our new officers, and they are right
handsome fellows, so any pictures taking will
be classy (I was asked by one of the ladies to
say this, but I cannot tell you which one). Please
congratulate them on their new assignments for
our unit. We are in good hands.
The train is at rest this month, but our
members are at work with the preparations for
the annual 357 dinner. Our members also look
forward to attending the Divan installation on
January 2nd, and our new officers will attend
the Unit and Club Officer’s Installation on
January 3rd.
Well that’s all for now. See ya down the
tracks.

Racers
By: Jack Hill
The December meeting lacked a quorum
to hold the election that belonged at the
November meeting. Members who attended
the meeting voiced several opinions to
explain the lack of member participation in
parades and club meetings. Several members
have job commitments that take precedence;
others have health or physical limitations, and
some have turned their interests elsewhere.
Our need is for new members. One idea to
gain new memberships is to set up an area
in the Tangier parking lot for the race cars
to be available for test rides by Shriners who
might become addicted to driving in parades
once they feel the fun of driving one of the
race cars.
January resumes Hamburger Nights and
the Racers will be there to provide tasty ice
cream as one of the available desserts.
All of the Mo-Ri family is deeply saddened
by the sudden loss of our brother and Vice
President Ron Kern. He was an exceptional
member of our group and will be greatly
missed. We hope that you will keep his
wife Linda and the rest of his family in your
prayers as they deal with their loss.
Our November meeting was chaired by
Vice President Ron Kern at Farmer Browns
in Waterloo with 48 present. Jon Christensen
will have to attend the next meeting to see if
he was voted in!
We are all looking forward to Kids
Explore February 14th and 15th right before
the Shrine Circus. As a show of the Mo-Ri
“can-do” attitude the sign-up sheet was filled
before it got across the room! Way to go MoRi!
The next meeting will be December 18th
at Fernando’s in Blair. We hope to see you
there!
Tangier Band
By: Paul Mason
Has everyone survived the
Holidays? Have all the sugar
plums and the fairy sprinkles left
you bloated and just too comfortable on the
couch? Have you all made your New Year’s
resolutions, and broken them yet? I’ve got
another resolution for you that is simple. Dig
into the back of your closet or storage facility
and pull out your old band instrument. You
know you have one. Get it fixed up and try it
out. You might have to start up with “Twinkle,
Twinkle, Little Star”, to get your chops back
in shape, but keep at it through your music
books. Then, when you feel good about it,
come and join us.
At this time, I would like to recognize
two new members that joined us in 2014;
Nathan Rolofson (flute and piccolo) and John
Herbolsheimer (trombone). They have added
their skills to our band. Thanks to both of you.
The Tangier Band will continue to play
at Stated Meetings, impromptu events and
practices. In addition, members of the Band
will continue to entertain at various Homes for
seniors on an impromptu basis. The Band is
always looking for band instrumentalists, and
can always use a few more brass, woodwind,
and percussion players. Since you’ve probably
already broken your New Years’ Resolutions,
joining the Tangier Band is your opportunity
to finally sit down and play that instrument
accumulating dust in the back of your closet.
We will supply the music and stands, and
maybe find you an instrument, if needed. If
you’re interested, please contact Paul Mason
[email protected] or Jim Radosevich
496-2691 [email protected].
Please continue to support the fundraising
activities of your local clubs, units, and lodges.
Women’s
Auxiliary
By Jan Moore
Greetings everyone. What
a great time of the year. We had
our Christmas party in the “green room” on
December 19th. There were 30 of us, which
included 7 men. What a great turn out. The
food was catered and very good. Thanks
Faye for the pecan tarts.
We all took toys to be sent to the Hospital.
What a haul! There will be several boxes
going up with our Road Runners as they take
our kids to the Hospital. This is in addition
to the 6/7 boxes that went last week. Some
of the boxes did contain pop tabs. Keep ‘em
coming, they do make a difference.
A nice surprise today was the two gifts
of money that we received. One was a
generous check from the Provost and the
other was from the Golden Girls, in lieu of
a Christmas exchange. We are so grateful
that we have a Shrine Center that supports
our efforts to make life better and easier for
the kids we serve. Thanks to both groups.
We also received a check from Arbor Shrine
last month. We used it to purchase gift cards
to be sent directly to the president of the
General Auxiliary. These gift cards are for
fast food chains, I-tunes, and other stores,
which allows the kids to purchase what they
need or want. As a side note, when money
or gifts are given to the Auxiliary, they go
directly to the Hospital.
We have a request to make. The General
Auxiliary has issued a request for wash
cloths. The wash cloths are put in the
hygiene bags that each patient receives,
whether at the Hospital or at a clinic. Any
size, color, or weight of wash cloth is
acceptable. If you are able to help, just leave
your donation at the office with Sandy,
and she will make sure that we get them.
Also in the hygiene bags are tooth brushes
(individually wrapped), toothpaste, soap,
deodorant, combs, etc. Anything of that
sort if welcomed also. Remember when you
travel to keep the little individual bottles
that are in your hotel/motel rooms, as these
are put in the bags.
As we go through this wonderful time
of year, remember to count your blessings
instead of sheep and you will fall asleep,
counting your blessings.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Legion of Honor
Keystone Kops
By: Chief Dean Stockman
By Mark Dreier, PC
First off, I need to thank everyone for
electing me Chief. It will be an honor and
privilege to serve as Chief for 2015. PC Allen
Smith did an OUTSTANDING job last year,
and I know I have some “BIG” shoes to fill.
It’s the start of a new year and it looks
like your Keystone Kops will be as busy as
ever! We hit the ground running with the
Installation of Officers on 3 January, then on
17 January we’ll be having a Kop Kollege to
get all the new Kops ready to go for Circus
and Parade Season and finally on 24 January
we’ll be hosting our first annual Roast the
Pote. It’s a Dean Martin style roast. This
event is looking to be a very good time with
lots of great food and laughs. We’ll need all
hands on deck to make this a great event that
people will talk about and recommend to
friends for years to come.
Looking forward to February 19th-22nd…
the Shrine Circus will be at the MAC in
Council Bluffs, I for one am looking forward
to the new venue!
What a great year we had last year. We
had lots of firsts last year and I hope we can
keep the momentum going. We blew away
our shrine membership goal by four! And we
even brought in two new Kops in December!
If you haven’t gotten a 2015 Kop Calendar
of events let me know and I’ll get one to you.
Here are a couple of highlights for 2015.
Starting in Feb, once a quarter, we’re going
to have pre-meeting dinners again. They will
be at various locations at 6:00 pm, then we’ll
head back to the Shrine for our meetings.
On 25-26 June, we’re planning a trip to the
Shrine Hospital in Minneapolis, if you’re
interested see any of the officers.
Calling all Kops… The January Business
meeting is scheduled for 9 January, 7:30
pm at Tangier; hope to see you all there!
Remember to support your blue lodge, clubs
and units – they all need your help! Want
to see all the fun things the Keystone Kops
are doing, check out our Facebook page at
Keystone Kops Family and Friends.
Remember pies happen!

we have a new Commander of the Legion
of Honor, the one and only John Chester. 1st
Lt. Commander is Dale Nelson. All other
posts remain the same.
Commander Chester is very excited for
the upcoming year and has many great fun
ideas he wants to explore for our unit. First
he has to set his budget and get it approved
by the membership, but after that he plans
to bring to the members many ideas he
has been thinking about for the past year.
Should be interesting to say the least.
PLAN FOR THE MAN: Please mark
your calendars now for January 2, 2015,
Installation of Officers, followed by
Saturday January 3 which is Club & Unit
Officer installation. A busy and exciting two
days. January 8 is the Stated Meeting with
our new Pote and Divan. January 14th is the

Yoshi
By: Adam Reese, Treasurer
Gentlemen, 2015 has arrived! I hope
everyone had a great Holiday and new year
season! Lets start off by congratulating our
new officers! President- Mike Foreman, VPDillon Hadcock, Secretary- Rocky Pulley,
and myself as Treasurer. I know each and
everyone of us will do our best to continue to
grow this awesome club!
So with that, lets get to business! First thing
on the agenda will be our holiday party! The
date is set for Friday, January 23rd. We will
be having it in the green room at the shrine
to make things simple. Please bring a side or
dessert and your lady. Yoshi will provide the
main course. Please try and attend because it
will be a fun time without a doubt!
Second thing on the agenda is meetings.
It was voted on in the December meeting to
officially move our business meeting night
to the 4th Thursday of every month. We will
still meet at 7pm in the card room, but after
a straw poll, this new night works better
for more members. Please make the change
in your calendars. That will make our first
meeting of 2015 Thursday, January 22nd.
Please try and make that because we have
many things to go over.
Lastly, I want to give a big thanks to our
2014 President, Mr. Jeremy Myers. As well
as all our other members and their ladies.
But Jeremy just finished his 2nd term as
president in the 3 years of this clubs history.
He has been dedicated to this club since the
beginning. He has helped give this club life
and a purpose. We have gone from 3 members
to now over 30. With his efforts and all of our
great members efforts and hard work over
those years, Yoshi was able to donate $2300
to the Transportation Fund at the December
stated meeting!! I can’t tell you all how proud
I am at this clubs progression over these last
few years. This donation is just one of many
things that have helped people realize, these
young shriners are here and here to stay! I am
so excited at direction this club is going and
the people that are going to take us there! So
with that, gentlemen (and ladies!), heres to a
great 2015!

Photography Club
By: Serene Kidd
Attention ALL Members!
Along with the New Year, Tangier has a new
Photography Club, the Tangier Shrinerazzi!
Are you always the one that makes sure you
get pictures of the action? Could “Hold on, I
need a picture” be your catch phrase? Do your
family and friends suffer from chronic flash
blindness when around you? Do you like to
take pictures but wish you knew a bit more?
Then this is the club for you! You DO NOT
have to be an expert photographer or even
have a “fancy camera” to take part in the fun,
but we can help teach you how to use it more
efficiently. If you like taking photos at Shrine
events and want to share your experiences
with other Shriners, then stop by for our first
official meeting of the New Year which will
be held Tuesday, January 20, 2015. The club
will continue meeting the 4th Thursday of
every month.
Through the year we will learn different
techniques and best practices. November
was our first meeting in which we picked
our officers: President – Greg Norton, Vice
President – Steve Spears, Treasurer – Steve
Zimmerman, Secretary – Serene Kidd.
Interested in joining? Contact Greg Norton at
402-680-4055 and leave a message either text
or voicemail. You can also contact us using
email at [email protected].
Attention Clubs and Units! In 2015 our
goal is to catch the action throughout the year
at your events. We are also available for slide
presentations; please contact Greg Norton for
information.

Brooks,
The Chief expresses his deep appreciation
to each and every one of the unit’s members
and their ladies, for the hard work,
dedication, and devotion to the Unit, the
Shrine, and our mission. He is very grateful
for the successful year and is looking
forward to his retirement from the line with
anticipation and anxiety. He says that he
will not miss hauling around the PERVs any
more. The official ‘Change-of-Command’
dinner will be on 9 January. Thank you to
all, again.
The January calendar looks like this for
now: Change-of-Command dinner on the
9th, starting with cocktails at 6:00 pm,
1800 hours. The menu is Prime-Rib or
Chicken with baked potato, dinner salad,
and bread. Cost will be $30 per person; an
RSVP to Ed Thompson or Michael Brooks
would be appreciated. Please come out
and participate in the swearing in of your
new line officers and enjoy a great meal.
Planning for the Provost cctivities at the
Circus this year has begun and we are well
on our way for the Dare event. Jim Westcott
has already got several commitments for
the Dare performances. Since we will not
have as many duties for Traffic control at
the Center, the majority of our uniform
requirements will be Class A, but if you do
not wish to purchase a Class A shirt, we will
work with you. Watch for more on Circus
events in the February Hot Sands.
As always, if you know of anyone that
would make a good Shriner, Provost, or
Mason, please contact the Shrine office
or Michael Brooks for information and a
petition, or any of the line officers for the
Provost can get the information required to
get someone started.
Let’s get ready for an exciting and busy
2015. CSSA will be in Denver this year,
and our own David Robinson is the CSSA
Provost Chief for 2015, so let’s all try
and make this a very special year for him
and support his and Leesa’s efforts in this
endeavor. The Provost line officers express
their deepest appreciation for each of you,
your lady and all the effort that is put
forward to make our Unit an exciting and
vibrant part of Tangier and its mission to
help kids.

TA N G I E R “ H O T S A N D S ”
AN EXCERPT FROM GENERAL ORDER NO. 1:
FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of
this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses,
to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a
contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or
a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our
fraternity must remain above reproach.
Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and charitable bylaws:
§335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR
CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference
to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activity by a temple or Noble
without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the
Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited.
§503.11 COMMERCIAL USE OF NAME
The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the
Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is
prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has
been first obtained.
Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:
1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes:
(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or
affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity
without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having
jurisdiction thereof.
(b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the proceeds will be
for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.
(c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising,
promotion and solicitation to determine that it complies with §335.3 and
§503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws and that there is no
representation, expressed or implied, that would lead a reasonably prudent
person to believe that the proceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners
Hospitals for Children. If the potentate is in doubt, he must receive the
opinion of the Imperial Potentate who, after consultation with the Director
of Temple Accounting, shall make the final determination.
(d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for
a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and
additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws.
(e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the
Executive Vice President, Shriners International. Further, such written
material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive
Vice President, Shriners International shall be promptly mailed to him.
2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes:
(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or
affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising
activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Permission therefore
must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple
potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the
Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written permission shall
be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P.O. Box 31356,
Tampa, FL 33631-3356. No charitable fundraising activity shall be held in the
jurisdiction of another temple without the written permission of the Potentate
of that temple.
(1) A joint charitable fundraising activity with another 501(c)(3) charity may
be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are
for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of
the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis,
that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they
grant their written permission for the activity.
(2) A charitable fundraising activity conducted by a temple located outside
of the U.S.A may be authorized for other charities, provided that the
chairmen of the board of directors and trustees determine, on a case by
case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children
and they grant their written permission for the activity.
18
(b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fundraising-Approval And

Reporting provisions of the current General Order) from charitable fundraising
must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof
as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient
Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds provisions of the
current General Order. Provided, however, if the chairmen of the boards of
directors and trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land
requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they
may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for
Children, grant their written permission for such distribution.
(c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundraising activity
within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fundraising–
Approval And Reporting provision of the current General Order.
(d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the
bylaws of Shriners International.
(e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permission of the
chairmen of the boards of directors and trustees to raise moneys for Shriners
Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements
reviewed pursuant to §334.6 & §337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International,
shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or
licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners
International within 120 days of the activity.
Statement of Purpose and Disclosure:
(a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its solicitation
material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically
transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds.
Examples:
“Proceeds are for the benefit of (
Shriners) (
Shrine Club) activities.”
“Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.”
(b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit of Shriners
Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material,
tickets, programs, documents and electronically transmitted material that
“payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.”
(c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provision of any
existing general order by U.S. temples.
Compliance with Applicable Laws:
It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the
temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its
jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.
Financial Records:
(a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining to all
fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, organizations of Nobles
and affiliated and appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and
expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records.
(b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a period of seven
(7) years.
(c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Charitable Funds
and Activities provision of the current general order.
Notification to Nobility:
A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of the current general order shall be
printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no
temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later
than the last day in March of each calendar year.
Discipline:
Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is
subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.
