Where Business and Opportunity Meet ~ Since 1957 2 Message from the President 2 Chamber News Briefs 3 Upcoming Events 4 New Members 5 Chamber Events 6 Chamber Golf Outing MRCC OFFERS RELIEF TO MEMBERS AFFECTED BY HURRICANE SANDY Autumn has been a difficult season for many businesses still coping with Super-storm Sandy’s devastation. Even though local members had to deal with power and internet outages and long gas lines, we were fortunate compared to other areas of New Jersey and New York. Many MRCC members have been involved with relief efforts for those in need and have given their time and services effortlessly. The Chamber office was fortunate and did not lose power. Ten member businesses took advantage of the MRCC office during the aftermath of Sandy and were able to go on working. Several MRCC members also offered their premises for use by other businesses in need of power. Among them, Delaney Computer Services (Sloatsburg), and REJUVENATE Sanctuary (Westwood) opened their doors with a generous spirit. Many Chamber members also organized to help others in need. Ridgewood Moving used its trucks and facilities to assemble and move donations. The Rotarians of Rotary District 7490, which includes MRCC member Bergen Highlands/Ramsey Rotary Club and all the clubs in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties, organized donations to go to the hard-hit shorelines. Staging from a warehouse space in Paramus donated by a Rotarian, they continue to collect needed supplies for the Jersey shore. ■ Below, left: Ted Kissel, CSP, TSC, CTS, CPC, of UNITEMP Temporary Personnel, Hackensack, also appreciated use of Chamber facilities in the aftermath of Sandy. Right: District 7490 Rotarians, including Tom Grissom of the BHR Rotary Club (2nd from right) loaded seemingly endless trucks to deliver donated goods to devastated shore points. The event will feature holiday shopping, entertainment, choice of entrée and fabulous door prizes including TV’s, a round-trip air voucher for two on JetBlue Airways, NJ/NY harbor dinner cruise for two, and more. 7 The Directory Committee (above) meets under the guidance of Joe Mikulka (right). In This Issue Fall • 2012 The purpose of the Directory Committee is to oversee the annual production of our Membership Directory & Buyer’s Guide. Committee members choose a theme, design the cover, select photos to be published, and solicit advertisements. Joe expresses his sincere thanks to committee members who work closely together and devote many volunteer hours to guarantee a first-rate publication. Joe stated, “the directory has always been a source of providing all members the opportunity to promote their business year round and is a means of connecting to the community.” Doors open at 11:30 so you can do “last minute” shopping at our vendor tables. CHAMBER NEWS BRIEFS Message from the President Greetings MRCC Members, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for a wonderful 2012. Throughout the year I’ve seen most members and others from our regional backyard, and I am proud to say the backbone of economic activity – the networking among colleagues from companies large and small – is alive and well. Without you, our group would be unable to carry out its mission of “making connections” in the communities we serve. Thank you very much for your support. From our free Meet & Greets to our Business After Hours events, our Taste of the Region and our annual golf outing in Tuxedo, NY, we have had many opportunities for business people to discover each others’ talents and services, fostering growth amongst our neighbors. We’ve also expanded our presence in social media circles this year with more robust communication on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. In the future, look for a new Mahwah.com, making it even easier to get news and information about the Chamber and online connections to other members. Not even Hurricane Sandy could dampen our enthusiasm. It warmed my heart, even as the temperatures dipped, to see members of the Chamber come to our office to use equipment, get a hot cup of coffee, and help one another in a time of need. The camaraderie and spirit displayed was clear evidence as to why our region will bounce back quickly. The support and effort put forth by the MRCC Board has made this a tremendously enjoyable and successful year. I have greatly enjoyed my time at the helm of this amazing organization, and look forward to working with the new president as the MRCC moves ahead in 2013. • Mark Fairman's outstanding sales record qualifies him for special recognition at the New York Life Company's Insurance 2012 Council meeting in Vancouver, British Colombia. It was a resounding success on every level. The weather was sunny and dry, golfers tested their skills on the 18-hole course lead by forecaddies, a few would-be golfers learned the sport for the first time, and an army of volunteers made sure the day went smoothly. Evening festivities were held at the main clubhouse where David F. Bolger, President of the Bolger Foundation, was honored as MRCC’s 2012 Humanitarian of the Year. All attendees were rewarded with a fabulous day of outdoor activities followed by an unforgettable evening program, exciting prizes, awards, and dinner. You know the saying “It takes a village” well that is certainly true in this instance. A special thank you to Debbie Richin for leading our hardworking Golf Committee this year; without their hard work and commitment, this event could not have happened. A special thank you to the major sponsors who, through their generosity, helped MRCC raise a record amount of revenues: Inserra Supermarkets, Inc., Sharp Electronics Corporation, Jet Blue, The Valley Emergency Room Associates, P.A., The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Suffern, NY, The Valley Hospital Foundation, and our media sponsor Bergen Health & Life. This event is the largest fund raiser for The Chamber and a minimum of 25% of the net proceeds are donated to a Charity of the Honoree’s choosing. Mr. David F. Bolger chose The Valley Hospital Foundation as the charity to receive the charitable contribution from this event. Plans will be made soon to present the donation check to the Valley Hospital Foundation. Stay tuned for details of next year’s event to be held at The Tuxedo Club on Monday September 9, 2013. We encourage all of this year’s participants and sponsors to join us and mark their calendars busy the first Monday after Labor Day. CHAMBER GOLF OUTING HONOREE DAVID F. BOLGER Mr. David F. OUTDOOR LIGHTING: PREPARATION FOR THE WINTER MONTHS MRCC re by Tom Hartigan, Irrigation and Lighting Manager, Horizon Landscaping There are many things we should do to prepare our homes and offices for the winter, and they are all important. But one of the most overlooked winter maintenance tasks is checking your outdoor low-voltage lighting system to ensure that it will function properly throughout the winter months. Long summer days tend to make us forget about our outdoor lighting systems until we come home one night to dark pathways and driveways. Keeping your outdoor lighting system in top condition creates a balance of beauty and safety around your home, and there is no better time to have a full maintenance check-up than when the days start getting shorter. It is important that you hire a reliable contractor with experience in low-voltage landscape lighting to perform your service check-up. Be sure your check-up includes the following things as part of your maintenance: inspect the wiring for breaks, and make sure that it is buried properly to avoid damage to exposed wires from snow removal equipment; have the lighting timer reset to reflect the time change due to the end of daylight savings time so that the lights come on when darkness falls; replace all old bulbs so that your home and pathways remain well-lit, especially if you are having guests around the holidays. It is very important that your replacement bulbs are the same wattage as the old bulbs so the system functions properly. Fall is also the time to repair or replace any cracked fixtures or glass covers. Some people like to wait until the spring to do this because they are afraid of snow damage, but outdoor lighting fixtures are made to take a pounding from the elements. Remember that your outdoor lighting system provides security throughout the darkest part of the year, and it is most important to keep it in the best condition possible for the safety of your home and family. If you purchased a home where an outdoor lighting system has already been installed, you may want your licensed contractor to test the wire amperage as well as the bulbs so you can be sure the system isn’t overloaded and will continue to perform optimally. An ideal option to traditional lighting is an upgrade to LED lights, where voltage and wattage are no longer a critical issue to system performance. The bulbs will not only last a lot longer, but your electricity consumption will drop significantly. Horizon Landscape Company is an experienced low-voltage lighting contractor. Our expert lighting team is available to answer any questions you have regarding your landscape lighting needs. 8 • 230 comfortable guestrooms with 42” LCD TVs • 24 hour Business Center • Complimentary Wireless and Internet • 24 hour Fitness Center • Flagstones Restaurant and Koi Lounge • 100% Smoke-free • In-room Keurig coffeemakers • Mini Safes in each room • Priority Club Reward Points • Convenient to New York and New Jersey The Crowne Plaza is a proud Corporate Sponsor of the MRCC To book the rate, please call 845-357-4800 cpsuffernhotel.com 3 Executive Blvd. • Suffern, NY Just off Exit 14B, NY State Thruway Rates available Sunday - Thursday nights Some restrictions apply.
