News from the Dugout...
Tadcaster was a very good game all round. Both
teams tried to do things in the right way and it
was a much better performance from us from our
perspective. The stuff we took from the game on
Tuesday seemed to seep in today so I think we have
made progress. It was a bonus to get a few goals as
well.
They were great conditions to play in, a beautiful pitch and a great
set up. We said to them just go out and have a bit of freedom with
your game because I think it looked like we played with a bit of fear
in previous games, especially in possession. We spoke about it after
the Tuesday game and again today. There is no pressure on the lads to
not play the right way – that’s what we wanted and on Saturday they
raised the bar and staked their claim which is what we expect of them.
Liam Henderson went to hospital with a nasty gash over his eye which
needed several stitches in the end. There was a two hour wait to get it
done and we weren’t sure he would make it back for the bus.
Darlington will be another stern test but there is still no pressure on the
lads as you don’t win anything in pre-season. We said before Tadcaster
on Saturday that the season and the serious work started that weekend.
That continues tonight and the lads are looking forward to it.
It should be a good spectacle and again it’s about getting the
preparation right and to carry on the good work from the weekend
where we scored a few goals. Frosty who started the game and scored
twice had an excellent game. You can see he has goals in him and has
a good pedigree both at this level and higher. Shane Henry was getting
slaughtered for his first free kick but he sharp shut them up with his
second.

Tadcaster Albion Match report...
Spennymoor Town came from behind to win their first pre-season
friendly at North East Counties League side Tadcaster Albion thanks
to a Shane Henry bullet of a free kick and two clinical finishes from a
trialist striker.
Moors had drawn two and lost three of their previous five friendlies
against Bolton Wanderers, Hartlepool United, North Shields,
Middlesbrough and Guisborough Town, and with the season opener
at Glossop North End two weeks away, Moors stepped up their game
with a hard fought win in Yorkshire.
The game kicked off in torrential rain but a superbly prepared pitch
made the conditions perfect with the hosts coming out on top as
they opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Moors failed to
clear their lines and the ball was played back into the area for James
Beadle to strike a shot that took a deflection and crept over the line
despite the wrong footed Dan Lowson getting a hand to the ball by
pushing it onto the post. It was no more than Albion deserved as
they went close moments earlier when Josh Greening broke away
but curled his shot inches wide of the far post.
The best chances for Moors came to Liam Henderson who twice
fired straight at the Albion keeper, before he saw another effort
well saved when a goal looked a certainty after positive build up
play. Moors were slowly getting on top and got their rewards in the
23rd minute when Anthony Peacock was fouled by Matt Heath just
outside the area and Henry lashed the free kick over the wall and into
the top corner to restore parity.
Moors were now dictating and looked a real threat going forward
and it was no surprise they went ahead five minutes later when the
trialist striker beat the offside trap to coolly dink the ball over keeper
Gary Stevens into the back of the net.
The lead was stretched moments later when again the trialist front
man got away and fired into the bottom corner for an exquisite finish.
Moors then suffered a major blow when Liam Henderson was
rushed to hospital following a clash
with Heath that left the Moors talismanic striker with a deep cut
above his eye that required stitches. Nathan Fisher came on to join
the attack.
The all action first half was completed two minutes before the break
when Albion pulled a goal back as Moors trialist full back conceded
a free kick to the right of the penalty area and a teasing free kick was
sent in for Heath to power a header into the roof of the net.
Moors also lost Andrew Stephenson with a dead leg at half time
so Robert Briggs started the second half which didn’t live up to the
tempo or action of the first forty five minutes.
Moors best chance fell to Fisher who dragged a shot wide, and a
brilliant run by Henry saw him kick fresh air inside the area before the
home side went in search for the
equaliser.
Beadle fired a thunderbolt that
struck the post and Greening fired
wide with just Lowson to beat.
Lowson had earlier come out to
smother at the feet of the Albion
striker to preserve the one goal
cushion.
The game ended with Moors narrow
winners but Tadcaster pushed them
all the way in a competitive friendly
with both sides giving their all on a
brilliant surface.
Next up for Moors is their final preseason fixture against Darlington
1883 on Friday 7th August at the
Brewery Field.

Spennymoor Town Reserves Match
Annfield Plain FC 1 – 1 Spennymoor Town
Saturday 1st August 2015
A game in which Spennymoor Town
Reserves completely dominated
possession but failed to turn their
superiority into goals despite creating a
great many chances.
Annfield Plain had one shot on goal in
the first half which they converted after
Spennymoor conceded possession too
easily and took an unlikely 1-0 lead into
the break.
The second period was similar to the first
with Spennymoor again the dominant
side but lacklustre in front of goal. Robert
Thompson brought Spennymoor level
on the hour and it was no more than they
deserved.
Annfield managed one more effort on
goal in the second period but it was well
wide of the mark.
A point away from home is always
valuable but Spennymoor must have
come away today wondering how they
had not been out of sight by half time.
A game in which Spennymoor Town
Reserves completely dominated
possession but failed to turn their
superiority into goals despite creating a
great many chances.
Reports...
Wolviston FC 0 – 2 Spennymoor Town
Wednesday 5th August 2015
Spennymoor Town Reserves made the
short trip to Wolviston with a near full
strength squad at the disposal of manager
Carl Beasley. Ryan Cummings unavailable
and Rhys Greenwood injured were the only
omissions.
Spennymoor started the game brightly and took an early lead with a Kai
Willis header on 6 minutes that beat the keeper at his far post. The game
then settled down into a battle for possession in midfield with neither
Wolviston nor Spennymoor making any clear cut goal scoring chances.
Spennymoor were better organised and kept their shape well, restricting
Wolviston to long range efforts at goal.
1-0 at the break the game continued in the same vein in the second period
with no real chances being created, and when Spennymoor worked good
positions, a similar pattern to the Annfield Plain game emerged, with no one
willing to take a chance with a shot on goal.
Playing nice football in and around the box
allowed Wolviston to get men behind the ball
and force errors or clearances.
With only one goal in the game there was
always the possibility of an equaliser but
Wolviston self-destructed when full back
Mark Ferguson chose to play a ball back
to keeper Hodgson and chased down by
Spennymoor striker Robert Thompson
lost possession and it was a simple task to tap the ball home to increase
Spennymoors lead and take the three points.
Always a difficult team to play, the three points at Wolviston gets
Spennymoors league campaign off to a good start and with 4 points after
two games everyone can be happy with the start.
Saturday sees Spennymoor visit Stockton Town who swept the board
last season to play Round 1 of the
Monkwearmouth Cup.

Newcastle United WFC 3-3 Sunderland
(Jess Round 30, Ellen Turnbull 52, 71)
Newcastle United Women’s Football Club’s final preseason game
finished in a 3-3 draw following an entertaining encounter with
Sunderland LFC’s development side. Ellen Turnbull netted twice
after a stunning strike by Jess Round, but defensive mishaps allowed
the Black Cats three goals to steal a draw from the Lady Mags.
United were by far the better side in the first half, dominating
possession and limiting Sunderland to just two tame shots on target
and a close range header that was well saved by Megan Borthwick.
Newcastle on the other hand had plenty of looks at goal and their
breakthrough moment came in the 30th minute when, following two
fine saves from the Alice Harkness in the Sunderland goal, the ball
fell to Jess Round, who rattled it in off the underside of the crossbar
from 25 yards out.
It stayed 1-0 in to half-time but things got even better for the Lady
Mags just seven minutes into the second half when Ellen Turnbull
drove a shot low and to the left of Harkness to double the lead.
Turnbull would have another good chance in the 63rd minute but
drove it straight at the ‘keeper and from there, Sunderland broke
down the other end, and after a mazy run down the left and into the
penalty area, Ashleigh Coyle gave away a penalty. Former Newcastle
United player Charlotte Potts stepped up and coolly slotted the ball
into the bottom left hand corner.
That goal reduced the deficit to one, but it was only eight minutes
before Turnbull restored the two goal advantage with her second
goal of the evening, winning the ball from a defender who was
caught unaware before driving forward and once again hitting a shot
left past Harkness and into the bottom corner.
That looked like it would be enough to secure United a valuable,
morale boosting victory over their local rivals, likely their only
meeting of the season, but a
LFC Development...
By James Keep
at Brewery Field, Spennymoor
calamitous two minute spell saw
Sunderland tie the game after a series
of fortunate bounces and deflections
involving goalkeeper Megan Borthwick
allowed Sunderland to capitalise and
cancel out Newcastle’s lead.
Borthwick was then involved in an
injury scare after going all out and
colliding with a Sunderland player as
she helped prevent the scoreline getting
completely out of hand and, while both
teams looked for a late winner, that 81st
minute incident brought the end of any
significant moments in the match.
The result, still impressive considering
the opponent, leaves United’s final
record in preseason at two wins and
two draws and, although our own
Development side have a game against
Blyth Town this Sunday, the first team
now switch their focus to the first
game of their Women’s Premier League
season, at home against Nuneaton on
Sunday, August 16th.

A View From The Terrace...
New Mills
2014/15 – 21st
Expectation: Relegation Battle
More of the same from New Mills next season, they’ve managed to go through two
managers in the summer when newly appointed Keith Briggs was offered a coaching
role at Sheffield United, Andy Fearn takes over the tedious job of keeping them up.
Northwich Victoria
Title Pretenders
2014/15 – 4th
Expectation: Play Off Contenders,
After fending off the annual winding up order Vics will return to Northwich this season
through a groundshare with Witton Albion, who’ll be hoping as they’re desperate for
the money that the tenants won’t shaft them for £12k of unpaid rent again. Departure
of last season’s top scorer Gary Burnett won’t weaken them as much as people think
in contrast to the signing of lively ex-Burscough cross winger-come-striker Jordan
Williams. Vics have signed a handful of young players who don’t come with great
résumé, just makes me think their usual “well organised” defensive comes first attitude
may not be the strength it was.
Watch Out: Them rose tinted glasses, even when you win 4-1.
Ossett Albion
2014/15 – 17th
Expectation: 14-16th
Yes, really. You thought The Unicorns surprised a few by not allowing their fate to
go down to the AGM Cup last season, they’ve captured Matt Dempsey from Farsley
who’ll be a good signing for them and that could shore up that leaky defence. Another
improvement and bragging rights for the best team in Ossett.
Watch Out: Canned Beer ALERT, Canned Beer ALERT, don’t be going into the bar too
early, the Ossett Tap Brewery is up the road and you won’t regret it.
Ossett Town
2014/15 – 18th
Expectation: Relegation Battle
Don’t see how Ossett Town are going to be any better, they’ve lost captain Stefan
Holt to big spending Shaw Lane Aquaforce and signed a player each from Yorkshire
Amateurs, Farlsey U19s, and Stalybridge Reserves. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go
down.
Watch Out: Local Sam Smiths pub The Horse & Jockey is a recommended establishment
- unless you’re going to poke a biker in the face with a pool cue.
Prescot Cables
2014/15 – 20th
Expectation: Relegation Battle
Prescot’s annual scrap for Evo-Stik status continues this season, I think there’s at least
two teams in the league worse than them on paper. That dastardly small patch of grass
called Hope Street will continue to frustrate visiting teams, they picked up 24 of their 33
points at home and if they can further condense it with that 4-5-1 formation then it’ll
give them an invaluable advantage in escaping the trap door.
Watch Out: Don’t be too adventurous and sample the Ale, it’s rigged to the septic tank.
Radcliffe Borough
2014/15 – 19th
Expectation: Nearly Top 10
We faced Radcliffe twice under new manager Danny Johnson and they didn’t look like
a team that was 19th in the table. The former Nantwich man bought in players from his
former clubs, has connections across Cheshire so with a good pre-season in his team
I am confident in a big improvement. Their away form was disastrous last time round,
they will improve on that, and it should also have a knock on effect at home. They could
be pushing for a top 10 spot – you heard it here first!
Watch Out: The pies will give you heart burn, I asked for a Mince Pie, it should contain
Mince.
Scarborough Athletic
2014/15 – 6th
Expectation: Each-way Bet?
Many tipping Scarborough a playoff challenge but I think they are capable of better.
They’ve lost a few influential players though, playmaker James Bennett to Pickering,
Players’ player of the year centre back Ben Middleton to North Ferriby, and goalscoring midfielder Jimmy Beadle to Tadcaster. Doesn’t bold well but they’ve made
some impressive signings, experienced Leigh Franks who has played with Alfreton and
Harrogate Town at centre back, along with ex- Bradford Park Avenue centre half Steve
Mallory, hard hitting midfielder Joel Dixon, and pacey winger Domenic Rowe with stints
at Bradford City, Barrow, and Harrogate Town. They’ll be a difficult team to play against.
Hardworking, determined, dogged, but have lacked that forward threat, goals could be
a problem – if they can address that then at 12/1 they are worth an each-way bet.
Watch Out: Boxing Day away so try fancy dress as Father Christmas, you may avoid the
high admission “OAP Please”.
Trafford
2014/15 – 23rd NPL Premier
Expectation: Playoff Outsiders
Last time I made the fatal comment on calling Mossley’s Joshua Granite a rock in their
defence, well he won’t be, he’s signed for Trafford. They also have former Droylsden
forward Ben Deegan, they’ll be big and physical this season and should find themselves
in the mix for the playoffs as they aim to hit straight back from relegation.
Watch Out: Allow the other half to go to the Trafford Centre whilst you enjoy the
football, then leave her there. You what? She’s got the car? S##t!
Warrington Town
2014/15 – 9th
Expectation: Title Contenders
Half celebrity and all round nice guy Shaun Reid looks to shape Warrington up for a
serious push at finally getting out the First Division North, will this be their season?
Possibly. They’ve resigned former player Ciaran Kilheeney from Droylsden, attacking
fullback Alastair Brown from Trafford, Tom Hardwich, and Matt Doughty; the last
three all have experience in promotion from this level. They’ll be the ones to watch, so
hopefully they’ll have another good Cup run to give the rest of us a head start!
Watch Out: Take a trowel and bag yourself some tatties from the playing field.
Witton Albion
2014/15 – 22nd NPL Premier
Expectation: Playoff Contenders
All change at Witton Albion in the summer as former Norton United manager Scott
Dundas overhauls their ill-fated squad. FA Cup nemesis from a few seasons back Alex
Titchiner is there as is most of Norton United’s squad last term. The only real concern
is going to be the defence but they’ll be lethal going forward.
Watch Out: There’s a DJ on before the game, don’t worry, he’s actually a proper DJ.

diary of a groundhopper...
1) 1980/81 DARLINGTON V MANSFIELD TOWN (2-2) (DIVISION 4)
This was a Division 4 match between Darlington and Mansfield Town in February 1981.
The reason I picked this programme was it was actually the first ever Sunday match
to be played in the Football League and at the time there was a lot of interest to see
how it went. It was sanctioned the week before by the Football League chairman to
be able to play Sunday football. Nowadays with cable Television it is the norm but
at the time football was only ever played on a Saturday and of course during the
week but never on a Sunday. The match ended in a 2-2 draw and at the end of the
season Darlington finished 8th whilst Mansfield Town finished 7th. The programme
consisted of 14 pages at 25p.
2) 1988/89 Darlington v Carlisle United (2-3) (Division 4)
Darlington were playing their Final Football League match as they played Carlisle
United at the Feethams. Darlo were 5 points behind 2nd last club Colchester United
on 42 points and had no hope of escaping relegation at the time into the Non League
Vauxhall Conference. They lost to Carlisle by 3-2 on this sad day.
The programme consisted of 22 glossy pages costing 60p.
3) 1989/90 Darlington v Kidderminster Harriers (3-0) Vauxhall Conference)
This was Darlington’s First Ever match as a Non League club at the end of August 1989
as they played Kidderminster Harriers. The beat Kidderminster by 3-0 and in the end
had a superb season winning the Conference and promotion back into the Football
League just holding off a brave attempt by Barnet. The programme was again 60
pence but less pages with 18 glossy pages which only took about 5 minutes to read.
4) 2002/03 Darlington v Leyton Orient (2-2) (Division 3)
Sad day for many Darlington fans in this match as it was Darlington’s last ever match
at the Feethams Ground as they played Leyton Orient on the 3rd May 2003. The
capacity crowd saw Orient go into a 2 goal lead before the Quakers fought back for
a 2-2 draw. Darlo ended the season in 14th spot whilst Orient were in 18th position.
Programme was a Large Glossy 64 page Special with plenty of reading and an
excellent publication for the farewell to Feethams. Programme cost £5.
5) 02/03 Billingham Synthonia v Shildon (2-3) (Northern League Cup Final)
The reason I picked this programme it was in fact the last ever competitive match at
the Feethams as the Synners played Shildon in this Northern League Cup Final. The
match was played 2 days after the Darlo match with Leyton Orient. The match was a
thriller with the game ending in a 2-2 draw with Shildon winning 3-2 with their third
goal being a golden goal in extra time. Programme was 50 pence for a 14 page issue.
Quite a rare programme this programme now and would probably set you back over
£10 for a copy.
6) 2003/04 Darlington v Kidderminster Harriers (2-0) (Division 3)
Reynolds Arena’s first ever match saw Kidderminster Harriers play Darlington
in August 2003. This match saw a crowd of 11600 turn up for a match which the
Quakers won by 2-0. This was not the norm in this Stadium which was built to hold
25000 and instead of huge crowds Darlington usually just played their games in front
of 1500 to 2000 spectators and now and again had crowds of around 8 to 10000 if
they played a Premier League team or Hartlepool United in the Cup or a local derby.
No special programme for this match but a nice glossy 40 pager for £2.50
7) 2011/12 Darlington v Kettering Town (3-1) (Blue Square Premier League)
This was Darlington’s last ever match under the name of Darlington after going into
administration during the season and they actually did well to last until the end of
DARLINGTON PROGRAMMES 1980/81 – 2013/14
the season with players leaving every week due to not getting paid it was a wonder
they made it until the end of the season. Darlington ended the season in 22nd place
out of 24 and were relegated into the Northern League Division 1 at the end of the
season. Kettering Town were also relegated finishing in 24th spot. Darlington won
their Final ever match in the Blue Square Premier League by 3-1. Programme is a 32
page Glossy programme for £2.50. This Programme is very rare and would probably
go for upwards of £20.
8) 2012/13 Whitby Town v Darlington 1883 (Pre – Season Friendly)
Darlington 1883’s first ever match and this was away at Evo Stik Premier League side
Whitby Town on the 14 July 2012. The Seasiders produced a 54 page programme for
the game and although many adverts in the programme a nice one for my collection
as Darlington begin their long haul to try get back into the Football League.
9) 2012/13 Richmond Town v Darlington 1883 (Pre-season Friendly)
Another Friendly for Darlington 1883 as they face Wearside League opposition in this
August 2012 clash. Richmond themselves had just been promoted from the Teesside
League into the Wearside League and this was a huge honour for them to be playing
Darlington 1883. A large crowd turned out for this friendly. The programme is just a 2
pager which Richmond Town usually produce but again quite a rare item and would
probably sell for a round £3 or £4 pounds nowadays.
10) 12/13 Bishop Auckland v Darlington 1883 (1-3) (Northern League Division 1)
This was Darlington 1883’s first ever match in the Northern League and they played
Bishop Auckland who they were to ground share with for this season and the future
until they get a ground back in Darlington. This match was all ticket and I was lucky to
get a ticket for the match. The match saw Bishop’s start the better and deserved their
1-0 lead at the interval. The second half saw Darlo take control and in the end won
by 3-1 in front of a all ticket crowd of 2004. £1 Programme was 20 pages of adverts
and a 20 page insert which is normal for Bishop Auckland. Would probably sell for
around £3.
11) 12/13 Darlington 1883 v Marske United (3-0) (Northern League Division 1)
Bishop Auckland again was my destination a couple of days later as I watched
Darlington 1883 play Marske United in their first ever home game in the Northern
Division One played at Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park. Darlo made light work in
this game and easily ran out 3-0 winners. At the end of the season Darlington were
worthy winners of the Northern Division 1 as they scored 145 goals and amassed 122
points and easily ran out League Champions. Darlington won the best programme
of the year also in the Northern League with a superb 32 page glossy issue for every
game costing £2.
12)13/14 Darlington 1883 v Warrington Town (2-0) (EvoStik League First
Division North)
Darlington 1883’s first ever match in the EvoStik League Division One North was
against Cheshire side Warrington Town in August 2013. They won the game 2-0 and
had a very successful season ending it in 2nd position sadly they lost out in the play
offs by losing 2-0 at home to Ramsbottom United 2-0 in the Semi Final at home.
Ramsbottom went on to beat Bamber Bridge 3-2 in the Final. Programme is and
excellent 48 page glossy programme for £2.20.
With Thanks to Harry Watson for this article on Darlington and their Programmes
Darlington 1883 Football
Darlington Football Club was formed in July 1883 when a number of
representatives from several teams in the town met in a local grammar
school and decided to form one club to represent the town.
Feethams became the home for the new club, and it would stay there until
2003, when the club moved across town to a new 27,000 seated arena.
Feethams was leased from local businessman John Beaumont Pease in
1866 and the first turf came from the nearby Park ground cricket pitch. Two
years after its formation the club ventured into the FA Cup for the first time
but was beaten 8-0 by Grimsby.
Darlington were one of the original founder members of the Northern
League in 1889 and went on to win the title twice in 1896 and 1900. The
club turned professional in 1908 and decided to join the newly formed
North Eastern League – although it would return to the Northern League
most unexpectedly a century later. The opening day in the North Eastern
League saw the club beaten 5-1 by Sunderland, but the club went on to
better things in that league, winning it in 1913.
The club reached the last sixteen of the FA Cup in 1910/11. They started in
the first qualifying stage and played eleven games in eight rounds beating
first division giants Sheffield United along the way before finally bowing
out against Swindon Town by 3-0 in the last 16.
The First World War had a big impact on Darlington and the club ran into
money problems. Another Darlington team, the Forge Albion, took them
over, and the new chairman, Mr J.B Haw, paid off the debts and also built

the east stand at Feethams. In 1920 the club finished runners up in the
North Eastern League and won the Durham Senior Cup against the other
professional teams in the county. The following season Quakers went one
better and won the North Eastern League, and during the summer won
election to the newly-formed Third Division North of the Football League.
Quakers performed well in the new league, and after going through the
home campaign unbeaten in their second season, they won promotion to
the Second Division in their third.
The second division campaign started with a
0-0 at home to Nottingham Forest with over
13,000 people inside the ground. They also
played against Chelsea and Wolves, who they
would encounter again in the FA Cup in the
1950s.
They finished 15th in the table, above Fulham
and Stoke City, but the following season
Quakers finished second bottom and were
relegated back to the Third Division North.
The club won the Third Division North cup in
1934, on the one and only occasion when they
have played at Old Trafford. Quakers beat
Stockport County in the final by 4-3.

The club remained in the Third Division North
until the Second World War which had a
major impact on football in the country. Only
a limited amount of football was played
however since the army was based at nearby Catterick, Darlington played
regularly in one of the wartime leagues and attracted some big name
players, one of whom was Bob Thynne who was capped for Scotland
against England in 1944.
In November 1955 the club made history. At St James Park, Newcastle,
Darlington played Carlisle United in the first ever FA Cup match to be played
under floodlights in a second round replay which Darlington won 3-1. In
1958 the team became members of the new national Fourth Division –

they had finished in the bottom half of the Third Division North the season
before - and started to encounter teams that they had never before played
at Feethams like Coventry City, Watford and Crystal Palace.
Quakers enjoyed one of their best ever FA Cup runs in 1958 when they
became one of the giantkillers of the competition. After beating Rochdale,
Boston and Norwich, they came up against First Division Chelsea. After
drawing 3-3 at Stamford Bridge, Quakers beat the Londoners 4-1 in the
replay at Feethams in front of 15,150 fans. In the next round they were drawn
away to Wolves, who included England captain Billy Wright, but lost 6-1.
The sixties saw a couple of improvements to Feethams. Flood lights were
installed in November 1960, and were opened for a game against Millwall
that Quakers won 5-2. However an electrical problem set the West stand
on fire. The stand was gutted and it was later rebuilt in the exact same
style. The town end also had a roof put on it and soon afterwards got the
nickname, the Tin Shed.
The third round of the 1960-61 League Cup saw Bolton Wanderers, with
England striker Nat Lofthouse in their team, come to Feethams. Crystal
Palace and West Ham had both suffered defeats at the hands of the
Quakers and 21,023 packed Feethams hoping to see a similar result. It was
not to be and Bolton ran out 2-1 winners.
In 1966 Darlington finished runners up to Doncaster and gained the club’s
first promotion in forty years, but the glory didn’t last long as they were
relegated back to the fourth division the following season.
Quakers had another good run in the League Cup in 1967-68. They beat
York, Southend, Portsmouth and Millwall before losing to first division
Derby County, managed by Brian Clough, at the Baseball Ground by 5-4.
After just missing out on promotion in the 1969-70 season, the club’s
fortunes nosedived.
Between the 1969/70 and the 1979/80 seasons Darlington had to apply for
re-election to the Football League no less than five times, but fortunately
every time the club was successful, probably because Darlington was easy
enough to reach on the motorway and rail network, unlike other clubs
such as Barrow and Workington. The club’s plight was also featured on a
documentary by famous broadcaster Sir David Frost.
Club’s History CONTINUED...
The eighties saw the club in a financial mess
and fans were forced to raise £50,000 in just
six weeks. The fans and people of the town
rallied round and the money was raised to
save the club. In 1985 the team won promotion
to the third division under manager Cyril
Knowles and stayed there for two years. But
then successive relegations followed, and in
the 1988/89 season the club finished bottom
of the fourth division and were relegated to
the Vauxhall Conference. Former Aston Villa
striker Brian Little became manager and
he led the club back into the league at the
first attempt with a last day win at Welling
and the season after that the progress was
maintained and the club was promoted again
as Fourth Division champions. However, after
Little left for Leicester City, the club struggled
in the Third Division and was relegated again.
Playing at Wembley had always been a
pipedream for Quakers until 1996, when
they reached the third division play-off final
against Plymouth Argyle. They finished fifth
in the regular season after suffering only
one away defeat in the league all season –
they missed out on automatic promotion on
the last day at Scunthorpe – and then they
defeated Hereford United home and away
in the play-off semi-final to reach Wembley.
However, despite the backing of 13,000
travelling fans Quakers were beaten by a
second half goal.

chairman, Mike Peden, resigned. Local businessman George Reynolds took
over, paid off the club’s debts and started construction of a new 27,000 all
seater ground elsewhere in the town.
In the 1999/00 season Darlington were in the thick of the promotion hunt,
but slipped up in the closing weeks and finished in the play-off spots, facing
their nearest rivals Hartlepool.
Again, Quakers won both legs to set up a final against Peterborough at
Wembley. Despite creating more of the chances in the game, Quakers were
beaten by another second half goal.
The following season, Quakers lost in the FA Cup, but were then reprieved
thanks to Manchester United. Darlo lost in the second round of the FA Cup
to Gillingham, but when Manchester United withdrew to participate in the
World Club championship and indirectly help England’s bid to stage the
World Cup, the FA held a draw for a lucky second round loser, and it turned
out to be Darlington. They were drawn away at Aston Villa, and only just
lost by 2-1.
At the end of the 2002/03 season the club said goodbye to its home at
Feethams and moved into the new ground at Neasham Road. In the last
game at Feethams Darlington played out a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient on
an emotional day, which also saw many former Darlington players return to
the club as guests, one of them from as far away as California. The opening
match at Darlington’s new home saw a huge crowd of 11,600 people attend
but Kidderminster Harriers won 2-0.
However, crowds slowly dwindled, and within months the club was placed
into administration. On the pitch Darlington were struggling as well and
facing relegation. However David Hodgson, who had enjoyed two previous
spells as boss, returned as manager and helped guide the club away from
the drop zone, and in the spring of 2004, the club was rescued but the
problems continued under several new owners.
The club reached the play-off semi-finals in 2008 but lost to Rochdale, and
the following year, even though the club was in the promotion positions at
the time, chairman George Houghton put the club into administration for
the second time. Consequently, the club had points deducted, promotion
was missed, and almost all of the players and management team left.
Club’s History CONTINUED...
Despite being under new ownership the following season, the club was
relegated out of the Football League into the Conference for the second
time in its history. The fans thought that there was a bright new beginning
when Quakers battled through to Wembley for the third time in the FA
Trophy – overturning a two goal deficit against Gateshead in the semi-final
along the way – and on this occasion the previous despair turned into sheer
delight when Chris Senior headed a last minute winner against Mansfield.
Unfortunately the win was not a springboard for success, and by the turn
of 2012, the club was back into administration for the third time. After
overcoming several difficult
hurdles and negotiating for many
hours, a supporters group took

Darlington Preseason Results...
The new look club, now under fan ownership, wisely decided to leave the
costly Arena and agreed a ground share with Bishop Auckland at Heritage
Park twelve miles away. Despite the relegation, the fans stood by the club,
and an average attendance record for the Northern League of over 1,300
– around three times the previous best – saw Quakers win the Northern
League title and promotion to the Evo-Stik League First Division North with
a triple hundred of points, goals and goal difference ahead of previous
champions Spennymoor Town.
In the first season in the Evo-Stik League North the Quakers finished runners
up to Curzon Ashton but were beaten in the play offs by Ramsbottom
United but they are hoping to go one better this season.
The club is now the strongest it has ever been, with volunteers taking on
many roles as it aims to climb the national system back to the Football
League. The future is the brightest it has been for many years, and it is now
playing a central role in the community.

Darlington Player Profiles 2015-16
Peter Jameson - Goalkeeper - DOB 21/4/1993
Peter was signed as goalkeeping cover for first choice Mark Bell in October
2013 from Northern League club Sunderland RCA. He was previously a junior
at Middlesbrough before being released and signing for Consett. He was the
first choice during the 2014-15, and only missed one league game, the play
off final against Bamber Bridge.
Jim Provett - Goalkeeper/goalkeeping coach - DOB 12/12/1982
Jim started his career at Hartlepool United, making his debut in 2002, and
going on to make 66 appearances for them until he signed for Bury in 2007.
He spent a year there before moving on to Harrogate Town and Gateshead. He
joined Northern League Norton in 2010, and rejoined his old club Hartlepool as
goalkeeping coach in 2013. He took up a similar role at Darlington in 2014, and
was made second choice keeper to Peter Jameson in the summer of 2015.
Chris Hunter - Defender - DOB 6/10/1987
Chris was signed during the summer of 2013 from Northern League club
Shildon, for whom he had played for two seasons. He started his career at
Northern League club Chester-le-Street before going to Yavapi College in
Arizona and in his second season there was voted Most Valuable Player.
He then moved to California and played for University of California, Santa
Barbara, and had a trial at Toronto before returning to the north east and
signing for Shildon. Chris was voted into the EvoStik First Division North team
of the 2014-15 season by the managers of the division.
Alan White - Defender - DOB 02/03/1976
Alan, who was born in Darlington, agreed to join Quakers for the third time in
September 2013. His first spell began in August 2007, and he was part of the
team that was beaten in the League Two play off semi finals by Rochdale.
He left the club in May 2009 when it entered administration and joined
Luton Town, one of his previous clubs. He returned on loan again in January
2010 when he was signed by manager Steve Staunton, and he stayed for
the rest of the season, but unfortunately he couldn’t stop the club being
relegated from the Football League. His travels then took him to Stalybridge
Celtic, Gateshead, Blyth and Harrogate, and after an initial dual registration
arrangement with Harrogate, he signed permanently again in October 2013.
He has now made over 100 appearances for the club. His previous clubs also
include Middlesbrough, Colchester, Leyton Orient, Boston and Peterborough.
Club’s PLAYER PROFILES...
Alan was named in the Evo-Stik League team of the season for the 2014-15
season. When Alan won promotion with Darlington in 2014-15, it was the first
medal he had won in his senior career.
Ian Watson - Defender - DOB 30/12/1985
Ian joined Quakers in September 2014 soon after he had played a part for
Blyth in knocking Quakers out of the FA Cup. He started his career as an
8 year old in the Newcastle Academy before going on to play for several
Northern League clubs. He joined Blyth in August 2013 and was a regular at
left back for them, although he can play in several different positions. He has
also played in the FA Sunday Cup final for Hetton Lyons on two occasions, at
Anfield and the Stadium of Light.
Kevin Burgess - Defender - DOB 08/01/88
Centre half Kevin started his second spell at Darlington during the summer
after signing from Whitby Town. He started his first spell in 2006 after joining
from Middlesbrough, and played in the youth team under current Darlington
manager Martin Gray. He made one senior appearance before being loaned
out to Whitby, who signed him on a permanent basis in 2008. He made 240
appearances for the Seasiders, scoring 12 goals.
Terry Galbraith - Defender/midfielder - DOB 03/02/1990
Terry joined Darlington in November 2012 from Dunston UTS where he
was part of their 2012 FA Vase winning side. Capable of playing left-back,
left wing and central midfield, the former Blyth Spartans player scored one
of the most important goals in Darlington’s recent history when he scored
the equaliser in the top of the table clash at Spennymoor in January 2013.
Quakers went on to win the game 3-1 and take control at the top of the table.
He has now won two promotion medals with Darlington.
Tom Portas - Midfielder - DOB 09/04/1992
Tom started his career at Middlesbrough’s youth academy, and when he
was released, spent two years at Guisborough in the Northern League. He
joined Newton Aycliffe in October 2011, but was only there a month before he
moved to Evo-Stik League Whitby Town. He scored 10 goals in 107 games for
them, and won three player of the year awards at the club in season 2012-13.
He signed for Darlington in the summer of 2014, and scored the goal of the
season against Bamber Bridge, and also won two player of the year awards.
He signed a new contract in the summer of 2015.
Leon Scott - Midfielder - DOB 05/06/1986

Leon is a product of the Middlesbrough Academy, and has played for Peterlee,
Dunston, Newcastle Blue Star, Whitby Town (twice) , Harrogate Town,
Shildon and Norton & Stockton Ancients. He is a strong powerful player
who started the 2012-13 season in central midfield and was switched to left
back midway through the season following the arrival of Terry Galbraith,
and finished the campaign there. Nevertheless, he still finished the season
with ten league goals. In the 2013-14 season he played mainly as a central
midfielder, and was injured in the opening minutes of the play off semi final
against Ramsbottom. He was a regular in the 2014-15 promotion winning
season. Leon has an interesting job outside of football - he is a male model,
and on one assignment he spent a week in Las Vegas.
Phil Turnbull - Midfielder - DOB 7/1/87
Phil started his career at Hartlepool, and had a loan spell at Gateshead in 2005.
He turned pro in July 2006, but only played one first team game for Hartlepool
before going out on loan to Blyth and then being freed in May 2007. He joined
York, but then a shoulder injury sidelined him for six months, and when he
recovered, he signed for Gateshead in March 2008. He helped Gateshead win
promotion from the EvoStik Premier to the Conference North that season,
and again the following season to the Conference Premier. Current Darlington
striker Graeme Armstrong was one of his team mates. He went on to establish
himself as a regular at the club, and went on to make 362 appearances for
them, including one in the Conference play off final at Wembley in 2014. He
was also on the losing side against Quakers in the FA Trophy semi final in 2011.
Last season he never missed a game for the Heed until a foot injury in February
forced him to sit out the rest of the season. He turned down a new contract at
Gateshead in favour of a teaching job, and he joined Darlington.
Rob Youhill - Midfielder - DOB 28/8/1986
Rob signed for Darlington soon after the end of the 2014-15 season from
Harrogate RA, where he had been a team mate of Darlington striker Nathan
Cartman. He started his career at Scunthorpe, and then moved to Harrogate
RA before moving to the USA and playing for Hofstra University, New Jersey
Express and Ocean City. He came home in 2011 to sort out his US visa, but
decided to stay in Yorkshire. He re-signed for Tadcaster Albion, one of his
previous clubs, and then after spells at Harrogate Town, North Ferriby (loan)
and Harrogate RA (loan), he decided to sign for the RA. He stayed there
for two seasons and created a very good understanding with RA striker
Nathan Cartman, and Quakers are hoping that they’ll create that lucrative
partnership.

Graeme Armstrong - Striker - DOB 28/09/1983
Graeme started his career in the Northern League at Dunston, and he moved
up the ladder to Gateshead in the summer of 2007. He scored 48 goals in
144 games for Gateshead, as they climbed from the EvoStik Premier through
the Conference North to Conference Premier. When Gateshead turned full
time in 2010, he left in order to concentrate on his teaching career, and joined
Harrogate Town in Conference North where he scored 22 goals. After a season
at Harrogate, he moved to Blyth, also in Conference North, for a season, and
then on to Evostik League Whitby for the start of the 2012-13 season. Graeme
scored 30 goals in season 2013-14, all of them in open play, which made
him the third highest scorer in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division. He left
Whitby in the summer in order to play for a club nearer to home, and so he
chose Quakers. The EvoStik NPL First Division North was therefore his fifth
different league. Graeme continued his excellent form, scoring 26 goals in
all competitions in season 2014-15, including goals in each of the play off
games. However, he suffered an injury to his pancreas in the closing minutes
of the final, and had an operation in May.
Adam Mitchell - Midfielder - DOB 18/10/1993
Adam began his career as a schoolboy at Sunderland, and steadily made his
way through the ranks until he made his debut for the first team at Tottenham
in May 2013. He was a regular in the reserves in season 2013-14, but he was
loaned out to Darlington near the end of the season, and was eventually
released. After trials at several clubs in the summer of 2014, he signed a two
year contract with Quakers. He scored the first hat trick of his career against
Mossley in March 2015.
Adam Nowakowski - Midfielder/utility - DOB 22/10/1987
After a brief spell at Leeds United, Adam joined his local club Harrogate Town
and made his debut for them in the Conference North in 2009. He appeared
originally for them in centre midfield, but on other occasions he played in
defence and in attack, even once as an emergency keeper. He was voted
Harrogate’s player of the year in season 2013-14, but at the end of the 201415 season, decided that he wanted a new challenge, and dropped down a
division in order to join Quakers.
Amar Purewal - Striker - DOB 28/10/1989
Amar joined Darlington during the summer of 2012 from Durham City, and
was one of the first signings by manager Martin Gray. He started his career
in Newcastle United’s youth team and joined Durham City from Northern

League side Bishop Auckland in 2010 and finished his first season as leading
scorer for the Citizens when they were in the Evostik League. He joined Darlo
in the summer of 2012, and finished the season as top scorer with 24 league
goals. He went on to score another 21 in season 2013-14. Amar became the
first player in the new era to reach 50 goals when he scored a hat trick against
Harrogate RA on October 1st, but was ruled out for the rest of the season
because of a cruciate injury in January.
David Dowson - Striker - DOB 12/09/1988
David has the distinction of scoring on both his Darlington debuts - against
Aldershot in the Football League in 2009, and against Bishop Auckland in
the Northern League in 2012. His move to Darlington in the summer of 2012
marked his second spell at the club having first joined Quakers on loan in
2009 from Sunderland. He was released by the Black Cats in 2010 and after
short spells with Gateshead and York City joined Durham City in October
2010. David made only a handful of appearances for York before moving
to Durham City where he became a regular goalscorer, just as he did with
Darlo, notching 18 in season 2012-13, and then in season 2013-14 he scored
17. He scored six in season 2014-15, but none more important than the winner
against Spennymoor in the play off semi final with just two minutes left.
Stephen Thompson - Striker - DOB 15/04/1989
Tommo signed for Quakers in September 2012 from Northern League club
Durham City. He started his career at Middlesbrough without making a first
team appearance, and then moved to Port Vale where he scored twice in 17
appearances. He was freed by Vale, and joined Telford United in Conference
North. He returned to the north east in the summer of 2010, and joined
Durham City, who were then in the Evostik League. He was a regular scorer at
New Ferens Park before he was transferred to Quakers for whom he scored
19 times in season 2012-13. He was outstanding in season 2013-14, scoring
several memorable goals, and he was the runaway winner of the league’s
player of the year award. He scored 27 goals in season 2013-14, and created
many more for his team mates. He wasn’t as prolific in season 2014-15, but
was still a very important member of the team.
Nathan Cartman - Striker
Quakers beat several clubs to sign Nathan in January 2015, paying Harrogate
RA an undisclosed sum for him. He started his career at Leeds United and
graduated through their Academy. When he was released by the Elland Road
club, he played for Harrogate Town, Liversedge and Brighouse before joining

Harrogate RA. He made 130 appearances for the RA, scoring 67 goals, and in
the 2014-15 season scored 36 goals in 35 games for them. He scored seven
goals for Darlington over the rest of the season, one of them the vital opener
in the 2-0 play off final win over Bamber Bridge.
Martin Gray - Manager
Martin was appointed manager of the club when Quakers had been forcibly
relegated by the FA from the Conference (Step 1) to the Northern League
(Step 5) and there was only player on the books. He successfully built a team
that went to win the Northern League with a triple hundred of points, goals
scored and goal difference, and enjoyed a 23 game unbeaten run up to the
end of the season.
He brought in several players in the summer of 2013, and finished second
in the Evo-Stik First Division North but lost controversially in the play offs
to Ramsbottom. In season 2014-15, Martin guided the club to second place
in the table and another play off. But after four unsuccessful attempts to
win play offs in the past, Quakers were finally successful, clinching a place
in the EvoStik NPL Premier Division by beating Spennymoor Town and
Bamber Bridge. Martin started his football career at Sunderland, where he
was part of the squad that reached the 1992 FA Cup final, and after making
54 appearances for the club, moved to Oxford United.
He stayed there for four years, making 121 appearances, before joining
Darlington in 1999. He retired from playing in 2001 to concentrate on
coaching, and he was made youth team coach. He moved up to assistant
manager under David Hodgson and then Dave Penney, with whom he moved
to Oldham Athletic in 2009. He left after a season at Oldham, and after
setting up his successful coaching academy, he was appointed Darlington
manager in the summer of 2012.
Assistant manager - Brian Atkinson
Former Sunderland midfielder Brian was appointed assistant manager after
winning the Northern League in the previous season with Spennymoor. Brian
was a member of the Sunderland squad that won the Second Division play
off final in 1990, and the FA Cup final against Liverpool in 1992.
He moved on to Darlington in 1996, and played in the League Two play off
final against Peterborough in 2000. He retired from playing in 2002. Brian
has also won six England Under 21 caps, and was part of the squad that won
the 1991 Toulon tournament.

LATEST NEWS...
Spennymoor Town Manager Jason Ainsley has revealed details of
a new player signing for the club. Dan Frost has signed on a 1 year
deal.
Jason told us earlier ‘Danny (Frosty) is very well thought of in
and around the Yorkshire area and did very well for Bradford Park
Avenue and Shaw Lane Aquaforce.
I spoke to several
managers about him
and they all gave
me glowing reports,
He certainly has the
pedigree to do well
for us this season
and score goals.
He did very well at
Tadcaster Albion and
grabbed a couple
of goals which will
do him the world
of good, Danny is a
chirpy lad who has
fitted straight into
the dressing room
and we wish him well
during his spell at the club.’
Dan added ‘I am very happy to have signed for Spennymoor Town
FC, I have recently moved up north due to work commitments and
as soon as I met the gaffer he sold the club, the coaching staff
and the players to me and I knew it was the place for me to play
my football.
Spennymoor Town is a very ambitious and professional club
which I’m looking forward to hopefully winning some silverware
with this season.’
We would like to welcome Dan to the Brewery Field.
